Dear Fellow Members; As many of you have witnessed, construction has begun at the Holland Family Building. This is the third major construction project to take place at that building over the last ten years. The first large construction project saw the transformation of our gym into a state-of-the-art fitness center, our parking lot enlarged, new locker rooms and a modernized lobby. Five years ago we transformed 7,500 square feet of space on our second floor into quickly-filled rooms for our outstanding Early Childhood program, doubling our capacity. We expanded the men’s locker room to accommodate a rapidly growing membership and did some refurbishment of the space used for our popular Kids’ Place after-school rooms. New windows in half of the building accompanied new HVAC systems and boilers. The new Yoga/Pilates room was created from unused kitchen and storage rooms and bathrooms were modernized. The project upon which we have embarked this year will enclose our rear patio to create a unique indoor playground for young children. We don’t know of any other similar space within the city limits. All of the space with the
exception of the fitness center on the first floor will be transformed into an expanded and new lobby, four additional rooms for infants and toddlers and new space for our after-school program. Our lower level will become familyfriendly lounge and recreation space that will include a fully-accessible basketball and other game space, new rooms for Yoga, Pilates, group fitness, cycling, massage and stretching. New windows will make the environment bright and cheery and new HVAC will improve the air quality dramatically. Exercise-friendly lighting and floors will be installed, insuring the best and safest space for fitness possible. Completion of the project will coincide with our 70th anniversary and will bring the building farther into the 21st century. Consistent with our mission, more people, from more communities will be served in better ways at our center of communities. Our intent is to continue all of our programs throughout the year of construction. Phasing and assigning some evening and weekend hours to certain aspects of the project are expected to lessen the disruption that could arise. Construction projects are not new to us; this will have been our fifth one over the last ten years. We know from experience that our outstanding staff can be flexible and creative when it comes to keeping members happy. Our members, especially at the Holland Family Building, are cooperative and patient, taking
a longer-term view. When work is finished we will have a premier facility, in an excellent location, filled with top-quality programming and services, used by a great group of members for many decades to come. Funding for this project, which will total more than $3 million, will be provided by a matching grant for 50% of the total cost from the Benderson Family, Variety Club of Buffalo, private donors, institutions and other local foundations. We’re hoping that our members step up to the plate in a big way for this one, confirming our belief that the JCC is an integral and cherished institution in the City of Buffalo. Gifts of all sizes are welcome from all of our members and can be made online at www.jccbuffalo.org, directly to me or through the Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies. Many naming and dedication opportunities are available. For further information please call me at 204-2071 or email me at rzakalik@ jccbuffalo.org. Sincerely,
in the News! Photos from Our Annual Meeting
HOLLAND FAMILY BUILDING Renewal Project Richard Zakalik, Executive Director of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Buffalo announced a construction start date of July 5th, 2017 for the Holland Family Building at 787 Delaware Ave. The project was originally announced more than a year ago. Plans have been reviewed by the Linwood Association and have been approved by the City of Buffalo Preservation Board. Construction will include the enclosure of an 1800 square feet patio facing Linwood Avenue at the back of the building. An indoor playground for young children will be constructed for member families and participants in the JCC’s Early Childhood program. That program has grown from fewer than 60 children ten years ago to more than 200 children when the project is complete. JCC president Susan Freed-Oestreicher noted that: “The growth of our program, due in part by the rapid growth of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, has given us the confidence to expand our facilities and provide state-of-the-art space
for our children and members.” Additional work will reconfigure and modernize space for 40 additional infants and 20 additional after-school participants. Relocation into extensively renovated space will happen for group fitness classes, cycling, Yoga and adult discussion groups. New windows, HVAC systems, lobbies and entrances will complete the multi-million dollar project. Work is expected to be completed in time for the beginning of the 2018 school year and the 70th anniversary of the construction of the international style building. K1 Architecture is the architect and BRD Construction is the project manager. Major funding for the project will come from a matching grant provided by the Nathan Benderson Family, longtime supporters of the JCC and many other Western New York, not-for-profit agencies that benefit families and underserved populations. Variety Club of Buffalo is providing funds for a fully-accessible basketball and play space to be created from
an under-used racquetball court. Additional funding will be sought over the next few years from government sources, foundations, corporations and private individuals. Naming opportunities are available for many of the tobe-created spaces. The JCC of Greater Buffalo is a non-profit agency with a mission to improve the lives of the Jewish and general communities of Western New York. Support is received from the Jewish Federation of Greater Buffalo and the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County. Services provided include health, fitness, recreation, education, cultural arts and camping to its more than 9,000 members and the general public. Membership is open to all without regard to race, religion, economic status or sexual orientation. A second location is in Getzville at 2640 North Forest Road. Access Control System
Your JCC of Greater Buffalo card is used to gain access to the JCC and specific areas within it. Our doors are monitored and secured by our Member Services staff through the access control system. Based on the card holder’s access status (e.g. Gym Only Membership, Full Membership) access is granted or denied to areas within each building. If you don’t have a card, and are visiting our buildings, you will be prompted to speak to a Member Services associate who will direct you to enter the building and obtain a guest pass.
A Stronger JCC
The JCC educates youth, provides services for seniors, provides a home for growing families and creates an environment that embraces all members of the Buffalo community regardless of background. Surprisingly, membership fees cover only 30% of the revenue it takes to keep our JCC running. We need your financial support so that we may enrich our community. You can make a donation in honor of, or in memory of someone, or as a get well wish, or to celebrate an anniversary, new baby, or life event in any denomination. A card will be sent to the recipient with your name on it and also acknowledged in a future program guide. To make a donation, come in to either JCC and pick up a donation form. Planned giving opportunities which can provide income during your lifetime can be arranged through the Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies. The Jewish Community Center gratefully acknowledges and thanks the following for their contributions of $10 or more. We regret any omissions or errors. Rosh Hashanah is the first day of a 10-day holiday period called the “Ten Days of Repentance” which ends with Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement ends the “Ten Days of Repentance” and is the most solemn day of the Jewish year. Yom Kippur is a very serious day, which includes fasting for adults, praying in the synagogue and holding memorial services.
Sukkot, is a festival of thanksgiving for the harvest. A custom associated with this holiday is the building of a booth called a “sukkah”. We commemorate the building of booths by farmers in the fields of Palestine so they would not have to return to their homes in the village during the harvest. The sukkah is made of green branches, which are decorated with flowers and fruit.
Shemini Atzeret This holiday occurs on the eighth day of Sukkot and is considered a holiday in itself. It is a solemn day with special prayers for rain (geshem). This is the beginning of the season which determines the fertility of land in the year to come.
Simchat Torah This holiday is observed on the second day of Shemini Atzeret and emphasizes the continuity of Jewish learning. Throughout the year, passages of the Torah are read aloud in the synagogue. On Simchat Torah, the reading is completed, then immediately begun again. This symbolizes that study of the Torah has no beginning or end. Decorated flags are carried around the synagogue.
