Origins of The Market Hall The market hall was orginally built on a roman bath site. During its consturction, and later excavations, roman coins were found in large numbers.

A covered market hall was provided by the corporation in 1854 but this was completely rebuilt on a more extenisive site 1889. Traders were reluctant to move indoors but further incentive was given by the low extension along west tower street for the poultry market.

“

The standers of today have changed, people no longer need the market. Instead we have all these fancy supermarkets and the market is now dying as a result.
