Restaurant Review

The Garden Restaurant, Farington Lodge, Leyland THERE simply cannot be a more beautiful house, a more elegant setting or a more delightful place to dine in our region than Farington Lodge. Farington Lodge is a haven of peace, well-hidden from the bustle of Stanifield Lane. Settling into the sumptuous Garden Restaurant, you could be anywhere - associated with elegance and fine dining, that is!

you would expect, the Farington Lodge wine list is most impressive. Having opted for fish and lamb ‘mains,’ we compromised with a New World white, Vina Plata Chardonnay from Argentina. Described as a delicate wine with a fresh and fruity flavour, it proved an ideal accompaniment to dinner. For the main event, my wife chose the most delicate rump of lamb, with grilled Mediterranean vegetables, creamed potatoes, adorned with rocket There have been significant changes to this iconic and pesto. Leyland landmark but, more significant for our The generous and tender portions of pink meat purposes, head chef Michael Slater has introduced were perfectly complemented with the contrasting a brand new menu. flavours of the vegetables, pesto and additional There is an enticing three course Table d'hôte mint sauce. It was declared divine and delicious menu at £26, yet our first choice - to opt for the A and it soon disappeared. la Carte menu was easy. The rest, as ever, proved more difficult. Relaxed in the plush Balmoral Lounge, we enjoyed drinks and nibbles - Marinated Olives, Sunblush Tomatoes and Pickled Garlic. At the outset of a meal, they couldn’t have been any more ‘moreish’ though we passed on the garlic. With predictable difficulty we made choices. The staff were helpful and friendly, without being obtrusive, before guiding us to a prime window table in the restaurant. As lovers of the sea and its fruits, the seafood platter to share was a natural choice for. A visual I continued the fruits of the sea theme, opting for delight , it was even better to eat. A wooden block Grilled Hake Fillet with saffron tomatoes, potato dressed with Oak Smoked Salmon, Mini Cod with a shellfish broth. A fine piece of fish, Goujons, Whitebait, King Prawns in Garlic perfectly cooked and presented was succulent and Butter, with a Toasted Wholemeal Loaf and well supported by a ‘sea’ of prawns and mini Tartare Sauce. As a ‘starter for ten,’ we awarded vegetables. ‘...Leyland’s hidden gem......’ After a well-earned break, with failed attempts to spot rabbits on the lawns outside, we enjoyed desserts. Once again, the chef served up a double treat. If I had to choose my last meal - ever - it would be sticky toffee pudding for dessert, no contest! Moist, gingery and with startling contrasts of vanilla ice cream and warm toffee sauce, there’s little else to ask for - apart from a strawberry for presentation and healthy purposes. Bliss! Equally well-received was the Iced Bailey Parfait with Summer Fruits. Filling yet flavoursome. It was a double dream dessert course as far as we were concerned.

which includes a very impressive afternoon tea, is served from 11am to 9.30pm.

There is a traditional three-course Sunday lunch available at £18.95, with a children’s menu also on offer. Farington Lodge, of course, is rightly renowned for providing the perfect setting for weddings, and with their civil license can offer the complete package. Call Reception for details. Parties, for whatever occasion, special or otherwise, can be ideally catered for. The almoral and Jubilee Suites are perfect for larger parties, with private dining available in four intimate dining rooms with capacity for 4 to 24 guests - all recently refurbished reflecting the grandeur and opulence of this charming house, perfect for anniversary dinners and special occasions. The management and staff are happy to discuss ideas, options and menus. The hotel also boasts 27 superbly-appointed bedrooms and, of course, is ideally situated for anyone planning meetings, conferences or a peaceful break. It’s over a year since we last visited Farington Lodge. We are delighted to report that, since we have been away, Farington Lodge - a Grade Two A cafetiere of fresh coffee was enjoyed back in the lounge, rounding off a wonderful evening. Listed Georgian House offering 21st Century We cannot recommend the Farington Lodge luxury and service - has got even better, if that dining experience enough, it really is Leyland’s were possible. ‘hidden gem.’ Well done chef and team! Jewel in the Town Celebrating 36 years in Leyland with Atkinson Ltd Craftsman Jewellers

IT’S a story of Joinery’s loss and Jewellery’s gain as far as the people of Leyland – and beyond - are concerned. For if Barry Atkinson, Leyland’s premier jeweller, had realised his original dream, things could have worked out differently, but he’s extremely glad they didn’t! Atkinson Ltd Craftsman Jewellers is very much a family business which has traded from premises on Hough Lane, Leyland since 1977. Barry (left) explained: “At school in Carlisle, my favourite subjects were practical and creative, like metalwork, woodwork, technical drawing and art. I wanted to be a joiner, but there simply weren’t any opportunities. “In 1959, aged 15, I took up a six year apprenticeship with a jeweller and I have been ‘learning’ the trade ever since. More than 50 years later, I don’t regret any of it.”

Like father, like son – the Atkinson’s eldest boy Craig joined the business straight from school in Leyland and served an eight-year apprenticeship under Barry’s watchful eye. Craig now has 30 plus years’ experience in the jewellery trade. Keeping it all ‘in-house,’ second son Paul, who served several years in the motor trade, joined the family business and for some years now has ‘fronted’ operations in Leyland.

Paul, (left) and Craig Atkinson

And to all intents and purposes, Pam Melling, who has officially ‘retired’ is still helping out in the Leyland shops and is very much part of the ‘family business’ - after 30 years! Atkinsons are specialist stockists of Bulova watches, Purro Italian jewellery, Chamilia charms, Sekonda Seksy watches—and much more! Whether it’s creating, repairing, altering or valuing jewellery, Atkinson Ltd are at the cutting edge of the business. Through a child’s eyes with

WRIGHTS OPTICIANS of LEYLAND “SEEMS to me that even very conscientious parents, who would look to all their children’s needs as a matter of course, sometimes forget about eye tests!” Leading Leyland optician Sarah Wright, owner of Wrights Opticians on Chapel Brow, is increasingly concerned about the numbers of children who never have their eyes tested. Sarah explained: “It is frustrating, children have regular dental checks, inoculations when appropriate and other health checks but routine eye tests on a national scale - just don’t happen! “Children themselves have no criteria to determine if their eyes need treatment unless they bump into things or miss out at school. Parents, particularly if they don’t wear glasses themselves, naturally assume all is well” Eye tests for children up to the age of 16 are totally free on the NHS. “All our opticians are very experienced in testing children - our optometrist Derek Pellowe has six children of his own! We have games, toys and activities - including Ipads and stickers - to engage them, whatever age, during the testing process. “We make it fun, painless and nine times out of ten, no further treatment will be required. However, if we can detect eye problems early in life it’s better for the individual if we can correct it - with glasses, patches or in some cases, exercises.” If not detected early, children can occasionally develop a ‘lazy’ eye, which might never form properly, resulting in a squint or a lack of binocular vision. This could even affect career choices and driving

in later life. “I’d like to see a public awareness campaign highlighting the need for children’s eye Testing. Mostly, our eye test will be a formality, but there are rare optical conditions which, if not detected early enough could lead to a lack of vision in adulthood. “There is no cost involved for children and, if appropriate, we will take a retinal photograph which can tell us so much more about your eye for free. This normally costs £10. ” Wrights Opticians offer a wide range of glasses and contact lenses suitable for children of all ages. Sarah commented: “We have lots of frames, different styles, colours, funky, cool designs to choose from. Plus, we fit them accurately so they are really comfortable to wear. “We also offer a full after-care service for children, totally free. This covers frames, re-fitting, new screws, most breakages, it’s all part of the service. “Children can wear contact lenses from quite young providing they are mature and have parental back-up.

‘...the glare facts...’ IT’S summer holiday time.. Hopefully, the weather is great allowing for outdoor play, possibly long hours at the beach. The downside is increased outdoor activity and extra exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays also means an increased risk of damage to children’s eyes. The answer is simple, says Sarah Wright of Wrights Opticians. “In addition to putting the Factor 25 sun cream on, ensure your children wear sunglasses outdoors. “Because children’s eyes are not fully formed, 70% more harmful UV reaches the delicate retina than in an adult eye. Even if a child has perfect eyes, they still need the extra protection provided by sunglasses when exposed to sunlight. Sarah advises: “Most children like to wear sunglasses, they look cool, grown-up and can be very fashionable. The key is to make sure they are properly made with distortion-free lenses.

“Cheap, badly made sunglasses offer little protection and can even do more long-term damage than going without sunglasses at all. If in any doubt, call in and see us for advice. Wrights Opticians have an impressive range of sunglasses suitable for children and adults. Whatever age you might be, adult or child, we are all susceptible to damage from everpresent UV light and glare. It’s always better to be ‘safer than sorry.’

Brush both the parcels with melted butter. Put onto a lightly greased baking sheet, then cook for 20-25 minutes, until brown and crisp. Delicious served with a green salad.

Pensions Revisited Money Matters with Derbyshire Booth Financial Management Ltd

Pensions were considered by some to be a fairly dull and unimportant subject - until recently. Then came the announcements of the state pension reforms and from last October Auto enrolment, where employees are being automatically placed in company pension schemes - and suddenly many want their say about what constitutes a good pension and when they want it. With average lifespan in the UK rising, it is important that people from all walks of life plan carefully for their future if they want it to be comfortable. One of the most common mistakes we find as Independent Financial Advisers (IFA) is the lack of reviews carried out on people's retirement plans. This often leads to mistakes in the early years and a need to adjust those plans later. After all a small mistake can be costly to fix later. The key questions you need to ask is: Are you receiving impartial financial advice? Have you completed a review of your current pension and any older pensions with previous employers? Where is it invested? And most importantly what is it likely to provide at your retirement date? Therefore, it is wise to review your pension provision regularly. Equally your pension fund might be invested in something that is totally unsuitable to you and take too much or too little investment risks. Again it is important to understand where it is held. As IFA's we deal with numerous pension and investment providers from all across the UK and we review the financial strength of each company, the charges they take and where the money is invested. This is then matched against your personal objectives and any potential problems highlighted. This is to ensure that a person's pension meets their longer term goals and is delivering value for money. After all, it is no use saving for 30 years plus only to discover that you did it all wrong.

It should be remembered also that pensions are just a long term savings plan with tax advantages. It is also important to remember they are not the only way of saving for your retirement and to have some balance is a good idea. For example some people prefer to use 'buy to let' properties, others running their own businesses and even deposit accounts. Whatever your plans to fund your retirement, it is a complex area that needs expert advice and regular monitoring to ensure comfortable years ahead The value of your investments and income from them may go down. You may not get back the original amount invested. Individual advice should be sought and no investment decisions should be made primarily from the above article. Love Milk, Love Local, with Deacon’s Dairy of Leyland LOOKING for a local business with a lot of bottle? Look no further than Deacon’s Dairy, situated on Bow Lane, Leyland. For when it comes to talking local family businesses, fewer people tick more boxes than Martin Deacon. Martin, who has been at the helm since 1983, is the ‘latest’ of several Deacon generations who have been supplying our town with milk - and more for over 100 years. Martin explains: “My great-grandmother and her sister were tenants at Holt Farm on Runshaw Lane for many years. “Leyland was just a small village and they would wheel a hand cart around the cottages. It had two churns on board, one with full milk, the other with ‘blue milk’ - that’s with the top skimmed off to make cream. “Residents would turn out and collect the milk direct from the churns. In the absence of fridges ,they toured twice daily, every day of the year. It was hard work, but very necessary and much appreciated.”

A 21st century electric milk float

Years later, as Leyland’s manufacturing industries took off, Martin’s grandmother Maud took up the reins, literally, delivering

by horse and cart. “By 1961 my Dad, Henry Deacon, was in charge and the family business moved to Bow Lane—and we’re still operating from here today.”

Martin Deacon at work

Over the years, Deacon’s Dairy has employed many local people, but family members have always rallied to help when and wherever. “In 1983, I finished university and was about to take a job away from home when my Dad fell ill for a while. I came home to run the business for him and, 30 years later, I am still here!” Deacon’s Dairy is the ultimate local business, operating from their current base for over 50 years. “We have five rounds, all within Leyland and Farington, with around 1600 customers. Our milk doesn't travel far, coming from Holme Farm Dairies in Penwortham. For over 30 years we have sourced our eggs from Henry Banks at Longton. “Everything is local, our products, our workforce - everything we do and spend is ploughed back into the local economy. “Our floats are electrically powered ’green’ machines, so they are pollution-free, a plus in these days of ‘green’ climate awareness.” Deacon’s Dairy delivers about 12,500 pints of fresh milk every week, around 650,000 pints annually. Current deliveries also offer cream, eggs, fruit juices and yogurts.

‘.....a very modern milkman with traditional values...’ Martin says: “We don’t have a massive product range. It’s best to keep to what we’re good at and what we know people want.” It goes without saying that Martin has seen many changes and had to face some desperate challenges to maintain his business in recent times. “When I started full-time in 1983, Britain’s milkmen delivered around 87% of the nation’s milk in the traditional manner. These days, nationally only around 4% of the UK’s milk is ‘doorstep delivered.’ We have had to work very hard to keep our five rounds going “The impact of supermarkets, garages, shops etc is well documented. Many dairy farmers have gone out of business and much of Britain’s milk is imported from Ireland, Belgium, even Poland and beyond.” Martin is very proud of the fact that Deacon’s Dairy is ‘keeping it local.’ “Buy from us and you know unreservedly that you are buying fresh, local produce that’s travelled less than 15 miles. “In terms of health, nutrition, green transport, supporting local farmers, providing local employment, boosting the local economy, it’s common sense, surely?” Martin is a very modern milkman with traditional values. Inevitably, Deacon’s Dairy had had to adapt to meet the demands and challenges of the 21st Century. “The delivery system stays the same, and the personal touch is very much a key factor in our relationships with our customers. “Behind the scenes, though, all our administration systems are computerised.

Four tops! Fistfuls of Freshness!

We still collect payment in person, knocking on doors, but many now pay online or by direct debit. “Contact with customers is vital, though, you have to give people a reason to buy from you. I have many longstanding customers, the older ones can remember me as a boy helping my Dad on his rounds. “My eldest customer, now in her late eighties has lived in the same Leyland home since she was born and has been receiving Deacon’s milk virtually every day of her life.” Martin has two daughters who work abroad. Could he be the last in the direct Deacon Dairy line to deliver milk this way? He commented: “Who knows what will happen. Milk has always been my life. I’m forever grateful and always happy to welcome new enquiries.” Check out Martin’s new website, complete with special offers at ..... ‘Love Milk, Love Local’ - that says it all, really.”
