Picture perfect with Wrights Opticians of Leyland

If it’s a super thorough eye examination you want, look no further than Wrights opticians, who now offer digital retinal photography - also known as fundus photography - as part of their services to patients. This is state-of-theart technology, combining digital capture photography with a microscope, allowing the optician to take detailed colour photographs of the inside and outside of your eye. Sarah Wright (pictured), owner of Wrights Opticians, on Chapel Brow in Leyland, explained the benefits of retinal photography in the eye exam. “It’s a really fantastic piece of equipment which allows the optician to examine the whole of the retina (the light sensitive layer at the inside of the back of your eye). There is no need to have drops put in the eye for this, as we can take the photographs with a normal sized (undilated) pupil. We can also take a magnified image of the front of your eye if we need to as part of your ongoing care.' “The digital photo is instant and gives us a permanent record of the health of the eyes. The photos are stored on our computer which means we don’t have to rely on previous notes or written records based on the use of the traditional torch or opthalmoscope. This gives us the ability to more accurately compare and monitor any changes to the eye at each eye exam' “Retinal photography can pick up more subtle changes in an eye, than the

traditional methods can. Thus, we can monitor people more appropriately and, as much as possible, within the practice, rather than having to refer them to the Eye Unit at the hospital. This reduces the burden on the NHS and is preferable for the patient.” The examination requires the patient to simply put their chin on the chin-rest (pictured) and a photograph is taken directly through their pupil to capture a

detailed image of the inside of their eye. Sarah commented: “It is so quick and easy. Nothing touches your eye and you don't feel a thing. It takes a couple of minutes to set up, the photographs appear instantly on our screen and so the patient can see exactly what the optician can see. So the patient is more involved, which is re-assuring for them and we can better explain what is happening inside their eyes. “If there is a particular cause for concern, for example a family history of glaucoma, we can more easily track changes in the eye and monitor appropriate treatment as the pictures provide a much greater detail of information to work from. Traditional optical equipment is still used, but it works effectively in tandem with the camera.”

Wrights Opticians, Chapel Brow, Leyland

“The camera usually focuses directly through the pupil on to the back of the eye. Certain conditions however, might hinder our view - for example cataracts, - but the sophisticated camera can be set up to photograph those too. The photograph opposite shows a ’Christmas tree cataract’ (can you tell why its called that?!) which we recently photographed. Our lady patient was delighted to at last be able to see what her optician had been commenting on for years.” “It’s a fact, apart from monitoring eye health and detecting sight related problems, digital retinal photography can also highlight a range of other conditions. These might include diabetes, high blood pressure, risk of a stroke and even conditions associated with a brain tumour.” Wrights Opticians encourage patients to have their eyes photographed alongside their regular standard eye test. Sadly it

isn’t funded by the NHS (although it is in Scotland!), but Wrights charge a very nominal fee. The benefits of retinal photography are clear to see. Having had it done once, the optician then has a pictorial record, a baseline measurement from which to track the course of your optical health. It might be age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, detached retina, retinal tears, eye floaters or (hopefully) a clean bill of ocular health but whatever the outcome the camera doesn’t lie and it’s as well to keep your eyes ‘in the picture.’

Buccaneers of the Sea with Foxholes Restaurant at Runshaw College

Pirates and parrots might not be your idea of fun, but if it’s hidden treasure you’re interested in, then sneak round the back of Runshaw College and dive into Foxholes Restaurant. Welcome cocktails at the pirate reception

It’s hidden away yet the finest of treasures awaits the discerning diner who follows the well-marked trail to its doors. On this occasion it was the first 2012-13 Foxholes fabled themed evening - a ‘piraterelated’ Buccaneers of the Sea event, a feat of fine dining interlaced with fun and games designed to raise much needed funds for Marie Curie Cancer charity.

region. Our mini pirate gang of four enjoyed - and shared - Bone Soup, a rich beef consommé, Captain Hook’s Platter, that’s salmon and prawn fritters served with chilli and lime salsa, Ocean Flight, a delicious meaty woodpigeon terrine and Tropical Oasis, a mango and raspberry dip with melon and mint sorbet. Four times delicious!

Captain Blackbeard and his plucky pirate pals

As ever, the quality, the taste and the creative imagination served up by these young wizard chefs had to be experienced to O’Hanlon’s be believed. Forget about Masterchef on TV, traditional the country’s culinary future is in safe hands. pirate’s stew As for the Mains, Spanish or otherwise, we were equally impressed and delighted with our pirate choices. Two of our party opted for Ship Shape Seared Sea Bass, which was declared ‘as tasty a fish fillet as I’ve eaten anywhere.’ I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Eve- Blackbeard’s Favourite turned out to be rything about the evening was spot on! From moist, succulent ‘brown down’ chicken the smile-bound greetings at the door from breasts, served with a touch of Caribbean Captain Blackbeard and company to the final heat on braised rice and accompanied by farewells, the young pirate crew displayed buttered vegetables. My O’Hanlon’s Stew skills, service, attention, care, enthusiasm delivered exactly this - a traditional pirate’s and passion well beyond their years. Nothing Irish creamy beef and pork stew, served with was too much trouble, and we haven’t even thick cut chips and petits pois a la francaise. got to the food yet. Four star meals with five star preparation, Welcome cocktails preceded an innovative presentation and service. Not a scrap was left three course menu, conjuring up images of untouched. Full compliments to the galley pillaging pirates whilst undoubtedly provid- rang throughout the packed restaurant and ing some of the best in fine dining in our rightly so. ‘ l as good as it sounds...’ Besides running a busy bistro, Captain Blackbeard and his eager crew even found time to organise competitions between courses. These included a sea shanty singing contest, a treasure hunt, hook a fish and a charity raffle with assorted prizes, raising over £100 for the chosen charity. Whether it’s Buccaneers Night or not, Foxholes has an extensive wine list, catering for all tastes. As pseudo-pirates, we chose the aptly-named Waters Edge, a more-ish Shiraz Cabernet from Australia - the list proclaimed ‘packed with vibrant fruit, this wine has a ripe berry flavour and will complement our rich sauces.’ And, so it proved, you might also like to know that Foxholes also has a well-stocked licensed bar, a match for any similar-sized restaurant. So to our just desserts - hardly just, they were seriously impressive and made for sharing. After all ,that’s what investigative journalists, posing as pirates, have to do. We co-devoured ‘Assiettes of pink grape-

fruit, sticky toffee pudding (with sauce) and Ferrero Rocher cheesecake,’ along with ‘Crepes and pineapple flambé with rum and Malibu ice cream,’ all as good as it sounds, flaming marvellous, I reckon! Coffee and sweet sugar skulls rounded off the a triumphal evening for the youngsters. We cannot recommend Foxholes Restaurant enough, check it out and book early to avoid disappointment. Themed or otherwise, they offer a superb dining experience, great value for money and outstanding quality - every time. Right, where’s my Buccaneers?

Building up a nest egg Money Matters with Derbyshire Booth Financial Management Ltd

From this October one of the biggest changes to UK pensions in 30 years is happening. It is called auto enrolment and this means that employers will automatically have to enrol all eligible employees into a qualifying workplace pension scheme. This means that even if you are the only employee working at a corner shop or work with 500 others in a factory, then a pension has to be put in place. If an employer already provides a pension scheme, this pension will have to be assessed to see if it meets the rules laid down by the Department for Work & Pensions. If it does not, then the older scheme will have to be enhanced to meet the new rules or abandoned in place of a better one. The Government has put in place a default pension option for those employers that do not want to establish their own pension. This is called ‘nest’ (National Employee Savings Trust). However, it should be pointed out that this is a savings account designed for retirement provision. It is not a savings account that the money can be taken out of earlier than age 55. The pension funds will be ‘money purchase’ arrangements which means that it will have no underlying guarantee of the amount of pension available at retirement, but will be subject to returns from deposit accounts, gilts or stock markets. Members of the pension scheme will also have the option of which investment fund their contributions are held in. For me, as an independent financial adviser, this is the most crucial factor because if you get it wrong it can cost you dearly over the years. The good news is that that these new rules are being phased in over four years to allow both employers and employees to adjust to the new regime. Once it is fully up and running the total contribution will be 8% of a person’s salary. However, be warned this can be reviewed in the future by any government and, in my opinion, will be increased upwards. After all 8% of salary is unlikely to provide an adequate pension for most employees in retirement. This change in legislation is not entirely unexpected given the fact that we are living longer due to improved health, and medical treatments are improving in leaps and bounds whilst all the time the Government finances are under increasing strain. According to the Office for National Statistics in October 2010, 58,000 people are reaching retirement age each week for the next five years. That leaves the

current and future governments with a tricky situation. Either, they reduce the support that the state currently provides in benefits such as state pensions, they change the law to make us all retire later or they increase taxes to fund it. Neither option is popular. The arrival of these new laws will also affect anyone who is already paying into a personal pension on their own as many employees will have taken out Personal / Stakeholder Pensions in their own right in the absence of ‘employer contributions’ being available. As the legislation will make employer contributions mandatory, reviewing your current retirement planning with an IFA would seem to make sense. There are still some minor technical issues to sort out on this new legislation but it is going to happen from 2012. With only 30% of employers currently offering pension schemes according to the Office for National Statistics in 2009, and that increasing to 100% by 2016, this is a mammoth task for pension providers and employers alike. Either way employees and employers need to start preparing for these changes now. A pension is a long term investment. Your eventual income may depend on the size of the fund at retirement, future interest rates and tax legislation. The fund value may fluctuate and can go down. Tax legislation can and may change in the future .

Strictly Legal A monthly legal advice column with Birchall Blackburn solicitors

Your car has to have been hit at speed and badly damaged for you to have suffered an injury in a road traffic accident - right? WRONG! This is a common misconception that means thousands of genuinely injured people are being denied compensation for a legitimate injury caused by a road traffic accident. Developments in medical, scientific and legal research have now proved that it is perfectly possible, for someone whose car has been hit in the rear by another vehicle at a low speed, to suffer whiplash or other debilitating injuries. These types of accident are known as Low Velocity Impacts, or “LVIs”. Whilst vehicle manufacturers have spent millions of pounds in developing crumple zones, impact absorbing bumpers and other safety features, these types of accident are still occurring and causing incredible pain and suffering to those involved. Despite some insurance companies trying to argue that there is a speed below which no injury can possibly have been caused, especially if there is no obvious damage to the vehicles involved, this has been disproved. It is the change in velocity (or speed) of the vehicles involved that causes injury. This can be further affected by factors such as the relevant size of the vehicles involved, the age and location in the vehicle of the injured person and whether or not they were anticipating the collision. For the insurance companies to suggest that a Claimant is either making up or exaggerating their injury can be distressing and stressful to those who are genuinely

suffering. Birchall Blackburn Solicitors has an expert team of lawyers, who specialise in this particular field. They have years of experience in handling these type of claims and if you contact us with details of your accident they can assess your case and advise you whether they think you have a case that they can pursue all the way to a court trial if necessary. We have an enviable track record in this complicated area of law and a have high success rate for our clients. We also offer a No Win No Fee service where there are no hidden charges or up front fees and all our clients get one hundred per cent of their compensation. Joanne Dewhurst (pictured) is a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives and is one of the longest serving members of our Personal Injury team of lawyers. She will be pleased to discuss any queries that you may have in relation to any type of accident in which you have suffered injury as a result of someone else’s fault. She can be contacted on 01772 433775.

New Year—New with Diane Oakden Many of us make New Year’s resolutions but how many of us successfully stick to them? Most of us are really disappointed with ourselves and quickly go back to our old habits. Here are some tips when deciding to get more active. 1 Set realistic, achievable goals 2 Plan to do exercise you enjoy. 3 Have a training buddy to go with. 4 Don’t let cost be a barrier- walking or jogging costs nothing. 5 Don’t let time be a barrier – you don’t have to exercise for hours and hours to get fitter. (Try Fitness Fusion the complete fitness package for busy people at Buckshaw Village Community Centre Tuesdays 6pm)

About a third of adults are not doing enough physical activity, causing 5.3m deaths a year. Researchers said the problem was now so bad it should be treated as a pandemic. And they said tackling it required a new way of thinking, suggesting the public needed to be warned about the dangers of inactivity rather than just reminded of the benefits of being active.
