Leader Comment December 2019 It’s December already, welcome to the final Leader of 2019. Last year at this time I suggested the year seemed to have flown by in a host of Brexit bargaining (or bungling) - do you get the feeling that little has changed? That said, we don’t do politics, we are all about local business and community. And suddenly, like everyone else it seems, we are getting into Christmas mode, Merry Christmas everyone!

Here’s hoping you can enjoy the best of festive breaks, all at Leyland Leader send you greetings and wish you well for the coming year - 2020. Is it really 20 years since those Millennium celebrations? The Leyland Christmas Festival is now firmly established in the civic calendar. The town’s celebrations got underway with the official switch-on of the lights and festive trees. Our sincere thanks, once again, are due to South Ribble Borough Council and Leyland Town Team (a dedicated bunch of local business people). And haven’t they done a great job! Not quite time to get the sprouts on, but time to think about Christmas shopping. Don’t forget our local businesses, shops, cafes, bars are restaurants and more all make that extra effort over the festive period - so there’s even more reasons to ‘shop local, eat local, live local.’ Let’s support our Leyland businesses as much as we can—’use them or lose them’ isn’t that so true. High streets everywhere are under threat, let’s give ours a

much-needed boost. Once again, our December magazine is 88 glossy pages, highlighting Leyland’s best businesses, trades, services and organisations. We hope you enjoy reading through it - it’s never just advertisements, we always ensure there is a reading element, with business editorials, advice columns, local news and more. This month, there’s a new ‘Getting To Know You’ victim, long-serving town centre estate agent, the ever positive Helen Pilkington. Check out Helen’s answers on page 54. Plus, we celebrate the amazing achievement of Leyland man Mark Entistle who, last month, completed the gruelling London to Brighton Vintage Run on - his 138 year old Penny Farthing! (see page 81). Please support our advertisers, they are top local people, and they depend on us. Have a great Christmas, see you in 2020. Keith and Ruth Bradshaw

Opticians merge to create Leyland’s ‘premier independent eyecare destination’

Two independent Leyland opticians have merged their practices in an exciting move for the town’s eyecare. Eyesentials Opticians and Leyland Opticians joined forces last month and are trading from the Eyesentials site. With just three businesses separating the two practices on Hough Lane, the merger allows both practices’ patient base to continue to

The Eyesentials team

receive a high standard of care that both businesses have developed over the years. To accommodate the move, Eyesentials are further expanding their facilities, giving current and new patients access to more choice, improved technology and an extended range of frames. The merger will also mean Leyland Opticians’ patients can take advantage of Eyesentials’ hearing care offering and experienced audiologists, provided in partnership with Amplify Hearing. All records from Leyland Opticians’ patients will be accessible at the new practice. Leyland staff members, including Optical Advisor Deborah Jenkinson and Dispensing Optician Claire Hayton, are joining the team at Eyesentials with the merge. Deborah, a team member at Leyland for over nine years, is relishing the challenges ahead. She said: “This merger will introduce our

current patients to the highest level of modern equipment available, in addition to an improved level of designer brands, range of frames and contact lenses. “We’re delighted we’ll still be on the same street and we can’t wait to get started, delivering the best possible care to our loyal and valued patients.” Optometrist Colin Tonner has also given his best wishes to the future of the practice, following his retirement from Leyland Opticians. He said: “I’d like to thank the generations of patients I’ve seen over the years for their loyalty to Leyland Opticians and I have no doubt they will keep supporting the new practice in the next step of its journey. “I’m confident that the new team will continue to maintain the high level of optometry that we have prided ourselves on over the years. “I wish the new practice the best of luck for the future and I can assure patients that they are in very safe hands with Eyesentials Opticians.” Eyesentials Opticians’ founder and Dispensing Optician Adrian Halsall said: “This is an incredibly exciting time for both our team and Leyland as a whole. We see this as a fantastic opportunity to merge two practices with exceptional clinical reputations, further enhancing a comprehensive portfolio of services by combining the experience and knowledge of our highly qualified and friendly teams. “My team cannot wait to welcome Leyland’s loyal and dedicated patient base. They will receive a guaranteed warm welcome.”

Have you heard about SLEAP?

Support, Lodgings & Emergency Accommodation for Young People SLEAP is a local charity seeking to provide young people with somewhere safe to live, giving them the support they need to move on as confident and independent young adults. We place young people in local homes. They get a bedroom in a real home, with supportive, caring adults, helping them adjust, learn how to look after themselves and are around to chat. Host families are paid rent for their room and are trained and supported by the SLEAP team. SLEAP’s youth workers provide extra support helping young people get back into education or training, find jobs, sort out issues around debt, health, relationships and more. SLEAP also works with young people who are not staying with us but that may need help to sort aspects of their life that may place them at risk of becoming homeless (job applications, work experience, benefits, settling into accommodation, help to avoid family breakdown). Really special are the monthly group activities. These sessions help combat isolation, build positive relationships with peers, gain new skills and promote better physical and mental wellbeing. We visit the beach, or trampoline centre, perhaps a food & hygiene certificate or have a ‘bake off’. Recently we did some painting and gardening at Buckshaw Retirement Village. They enjoyed it so much they are doing the Dementia Friends training so they can go back and run fun sessions with residents. SLEAP is 27 years old, it started in 1992 when clergy and people from different churches in Leyland started talking about the need to help homeless young people. There were no projects around then, it wasn’t uncommon for desperate people to turn up at churches or clergy homes asking for help,

nowhere to go. The Leyland Churches Homelessness Project was born with a group of volunteers who provided emergency accommodation in homes on a ‘B&B’ basis. In 1995 this project became a registered charity, SLEAP, with trustees representing different churches across Leyland. SLEAP is a Christian organization. Our Christian faith inspires the values we choose, the service we provide and the needs we respond to. The Bible challenges us to love with actions and not just with words and to live with hope even in the face of despair. This is why we do what we do in the way that we do it. Providing a safe home with a helping hand for a confident future – This is our mission and there’s many ways in which you can get involved and help eg: food or toiletries donations (we distribute food parcels to young people we support). You can fundraise for us or send a donation. You can volunteer (helping with group work, office help, sharing skills). You could become a Trustee. If you have a spare bedroom, perhaps think being a host family? If you pray, please pray for us. Pray for our work, the young people we support and the resources we need to help more. We’re a friendly bunch at SLEAP and we’d love to hear from you. If you’d like to know more or know someone who may need our help, call 01772 623603. Our website is being updated but you can follow us on Facebook @SLEAPLancashire or on Twitter @SLEAP_lancs.

Remembrance Sunday in Leyland

For Remembrance Sunday this year the November weather was kind. Hundreds of residents turned out to line the streets, watch the civic parade, pay their respects to the fallen and watch the laying of the wreaths.

In The News

Barrica In The Park Awad winning independent wine retailer Barrica Wines is behind ‘Barrica In The Park’ a new initiative bringing together the very best in Lancashire, food, drink and artisans. Jane Cuthbertson, Barrica founder, explained: “We had the wonderful opportunity to take on part of the farmhouse buildings at Astley Park, but the space is too big for just wines, beers and spirits. So, we invited some friends to join us. Already, Jane has around 20 local producers and artisans joining the project with gin, beer, cheese, chutneys, jams, cakes, sauces, ice cream, chocolate all set to make Barrica In The Park a feats. Away from the challenges of the high street Jane sees the prestigious site as a place where established local producers can share space with smaller producers who have neither the financial or logistical clout to open independent shops. She is effectively

A Wheely Good Effort

HATS off and many congratulations to Leyland accountant Mark Entwistle who recently completed the challenging London to Brighton Vintage Run - on his 1881 Penny Farthing! Along with a fellow ‘vintage cyclist’ Mark completed the 60 miles from London’s Hyde Park to Brighton Promenade in around nine hours. His supreme effort raised a fantastic four figure sum in sponsorship which he is donating to the Alzheimer’s Society. He said: “ We set off at around 6.45am from Hyde park and arrived at about 3.45pm so we did it over a 9hr period but we were not pedalling all the time “I knew it would be tough but the weather was kind to us and I’m delighted to have finished the course. My colleague suffered cramps on occasion, so we walked a bit to ease his pain. We also had a morning brew pit stop, a lunch break and a pub stop. “I was feeling fine, my legs knew I had been working but nothing drastic. I had done a fair amount of training

creating a permanent food festival ’Barrica In The Park.’ It’s not all about food, though. “There’s a wealth of talent in our area. We have a specialist landscape and nature photographer, a lady who upcycles furniture into amazing pieces and a gifted glass engraver. “All the artisans will commit to time on site, demonstrating their goods, talking to customers and holding workshops on the mezzanine.” Barrica In The Park is set to launch in February 2020 and Jane is happy to hear from more artisans eager to share the space. “I’d love that this should be a collaboration of small, local businesses for the benefit of us all.” (100 miles a week for a couple of the training weeks) and the new saddle worked well so no problems in that department.” If you see Mark out training on his penny farthing around Leyland, give him a wave and congratulate him on his efforts. Well done Mark!

Museum up for national award

LEYLAND’S iconic British Commercial Vehicle Museum has been shortlisted as one of three finalists for a prestigious award in the inaugural Royal Automobile Club Historic Awards. The new awards are designed to recognise excellence and outstanding contributions to the UK’s historic motoring and motorsport industries. Our BCVM has been nominated in the ‘Collection’ category, recognising significant contribution to the historic motoring movement in the UK or internationally. Leyland’s BCVM is the UK’s only motor museum dedicated to preserving the nation’s rich commercial vehicle heritage. It tells the

story of Britain’s big vehicles - the engines and workhorses that powered the industrial revolution, that keep the economy motoring to this day. Museum Trustee Keith Moyes said: “It is a huge honour to be a finalist in the first ever RAC Historic Awards. “We’re absolutely delighted to be recognised as one of the best historic motor vehicle collections in the UK—it’s a tribute to the fantastic team of staff and volunteers who work so hard for the Museum every day.” The museum building is the sole surviving part of the original 1930s Leyland Motors factory . Today more than 60 vehicles are displayed, tracing the development of both public and commercial transport from times well before the advent of motorways. Winners were due to be announced on November 21, post Leyland Leader deadline

Tree-time treats!

LAST month saw the great Tree Giveaway in Worden Park. Hosted and resourced by South Ribble Borough Council, local residents turned out in force and took away hundreds of ‘free’ trees to plant at home.

Climate change is regularly in the news and trees are often mentioned as the ‘lungs’ of the world. Council staff gave out lots of varieties of trees Rowan,

Bird Cherry, Crab Apple and more, bags of hedging and whips., along with planting trays as enthusiastic tree-lovers and gardeners gathered to take advantage of the Tree Giveaway. A visitor to the Park commented: “It’s a great initiative by the Council, this, I’m really grateful for the tree I’ve collected. I’m going to plant it for the next generation to enjoy!”

In the Garden

A monthly gardening column with Debbie Noblett from The Plant Stall, Leyland Market

As we head towards Christmas, you have to wonder where 12 months have gone so quickly! The garden has gone to sleep for the winter months. Until we see snowdrops peeping through and our gardens springing into life, it’s time to concentrate on Christmas and the once a year plant that most people tend to buy, ‘The Christmas Plant’ a Poinsettia. The plant originates from Mexico and was introduced worldwide by Joel Roberts Poinsett who brought the poinsettia plant to the United States from Mexico in 1828. Poinsett was a botanist, physician and the first United States Ambassador to Mexico. In America December 12 is Poinsettia day which marks the death of Joel in 1851. The Latin name is Euphorbia Pulcherrima, and the plant has been named after him. When buying a Poinsettia look where the plant is positioned, it shouldn’t be in a cold or draughty place, they are grown at high temperatures, don’t buy one with yellowing or dropping leaves. They need a constant temperature and don’t overwater them, half a teacup once

or twice a week should be enough, if they start to wilt give them a drink. If you over water them, leaves will start to drop. Keep them out of cold draughty spots. The actual flower on a poinsettia is yellow, it’s the leaves or bracts that are red. You can keep them from year to year. They will eventually turn to green, if you want to keep them, you need to cut them back in July, give them natural daylight only, then introduce a night time break of artificial light to turn them red later on. There are several different colours to choose from but red tends to be the most popular and a very traditional Christmas colour. Enjoy the Christmas festivities and get ready for Spring, when your garden will slowly start to awake with signs of green shoots appearing. A sincere Thank You for taking the time to read this feature in the Leyland Leader, we have had some marvellous feed back, and wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas.
