10 Stylish Years with Sandra Roberts Hair Salon HAIR today - and more tomorrow! And so it has been for the last ten years at the busy Sandra Roberts Hair Salon on Hough Lane, Leyland.

Sandra Hindley took over an existing hairdressing business in August 2004, re-named the salon and has successfully grown it ever since.

Fellow stylist Debbie Hemmings was with the previous management and, ten years later, continues to be a key team member. In recent times, Lauren Wilkinson has joined, generally charged with looking out for the younger clientele.

With tenth anniversary celebrations in full swing, Sandra has been reflecting on the past decade.

She said: “I originally had a salon in Skelmersdale, my home town, but sold it when I started a family and moved to Eccleston.

“I went back part-time but was never really happy with the arrangement and jumped at the opportunity to launch my own salon here in Leyland.

“For ten years I’ve not regretted a minute, I love my job, the clients are great and my

staff team are a delight to work with.

“Customers soon become friends and it’s great to share time with them.

Much of our job is making people feel good about themselves. Being with people, helping people, that’s the best thing about the hairdressing business.”

The industry is very much fashion-led and subject to constant change. Sandra and team keep up to speed but never lose sight of their ‘mission.’

She says: “Our aim is for you to enjoy a relaxed, friendly personal touch, along with a classic and contemporary hairdressing service. We welcome all age groups and offer a free colour consultation.”

Ten years on, Sandra’s sharpening her scissors and excited about the future.

“Mirror, mirror on the wall…”

Discovered hanging on the wall in the bedroom of an old house this walnut mirror appears fairly ordinary. However, it is a rare survivor from the reign of Queen Anne around 1705 and is called a 'cushion' mirror because of the shape of the moulded frame.

Entered into one of our recent Fine Art and Antiques auctions it generated interest from furniture collectors and interior decorators from around the country and sold after spirited bidding for £880.

Important information for all parents With Wrights Opticians of Leyland

Has your child got an undiagnosed vision problem?

Thankfully most parent’s make their children’s health care a priority, but sadly many forget that having an eye examination is an essential part of that health care.

Children with bad vision usually accept it as normal and don't realise they have a sight problem until it is flagged up at school. Your child won’t tell you they can’t see as they don’t know any different.

Worryingly, national statistics show that only 20% of children have their eyes tested regularly, whereas 92% of children go to the dentist every year.

What is more worrying is that 1 in five children starting their reception year have been found to have an undiagnosed vision problem.

Due in part to NHS cut backs, 70% of primary schools in England offer no eye testing at all. Even if your child has had some form of ‘vision check’ at school, this would not have included an examination of the health of the eye, which is equally important.

Studies show that undetected eye conditions can have a direct link to a child’s educational performance.

80% of children with learning difficulties have an underlying visual problem. In other words, if a child is having difficulties seeing what is on the white board or computer screen, they’re far more likely than other children to become frustrated with the whole learning process and consequently underperform.

Therefore it’s vital you take your child to see a qualified optometrist before they reach school age - good news is that it will cost you nothing! In the UK, all children are eligible for a FREE NHS EYE EXAMINATION up to the age of 18 (as long as they are in full time education).

The earlier a problem is diagnosed, the higher the chance your child will have of developing normal adult vision.

So, the best way to ensure that your child has no underlying visual problems is to take them for an eye examination, which can be performed from as young as two and half years of age at Wrights Opticians on Chapel Brow in Leyland.

We use a wide selection of tests specifically designed for children, so your child does not need to be able to speak, recognise letters and/or be able to read for our optometrist Derek Pellowe to make a competent assessment.

However, an eye examination is not just about seeing clearly. During the eye examination, Derek will also check the health of the eye, determine if there is any sign of a lazy eye/squint eye, check your child’s colour vision, and more.

Therefore, at Wrights Opticians we recommend that children be taken for an eye examination by the age of three and at least every two years after this.

So, what if my child needs glasses?

The popularity of children’s frames has increased so much over the past couple of years (thanks to Harry Potter!) that your child will be spoilt for choice at Wrights Opticians.

Restaurant Review - Isolabella, Hough Lane, Leyland

ISOLABELLA Restaurant at the heart of Leyland is like an old friend - it was ‘born’ in the Spring of 2005, the same time as Leyland Leader. In many ways, ‘we’ have grown together.

Indeed, we congratulate Gianni and his team on their recent multi-thousand pound investment which has seen the popular venue refreshed, refurbished and re-vitalised.

It is bright, open-plan, yet intimate and stylish and, as ever, warm and welcoming, its ambience and atmosphere as nearly reminiscent of Southern Italy as you are going to get in Leyland on a wet Saturday in July.

Isolabella Italian Masterchef Gianni Equally great news - the food, drink and service are as good as they ever were.

A 20-strong party was in full swing as we arrived in anticipation, with Gianni in full vision and, thankfully, in full control at his spanking new workstation.

A cold Italian beer and a glass of dry white wine always enlivens the taste buds and helps with the difficult task of choosing.

Much-needed, too, as the choices are as wide, tempting and authentic as you would expect from any self-respecting Italian establishment. And that’s without the Daily Specials - always exciting to me!

Forsaking my perennial Isolabella favourite, the Calamari Fritti, I opted to start with Spicey Funghi. It was hot, hot, hot, in every sense - but delightful with it. A volcanic hot dish packed with cheesey mushrooms laced with chillies and cooked in velvety olive oil just hit the spot. Delicious!

Across the table, the starter of choice came from the Saturday Specials board.

Tempura Prawns half a dozen more-ish stars of the sea, cased with the lightest of batters and adorned with lemon, dressed salad and a sweet chilli dipping sauce. Not a scrap was left - on either plate testimony to our host’s culinary skills.

Eccellente, as the say in Sardinia, Gianni’s homeland.

Despite our love of Italian ‘reds, ’it was with fish and chicken in mind that we opted for a Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie to accompany the meal. ‘A fine choice’ was the verdict of our personable, attentive waitress - new to us but masterly directing proceedings with consummate ease.

The wine - a classic Pinot Grigio showing intense bouquet with a pleasant complexity reminiscent of ripe fruit. Smooth and rich in flavour, well-structured, harmonious and velvety - suppose it must have been, we were more than willing to polish it off, as you do.

It proved to be the ideal accompaniment for our mains. Isolabella does have an extensive wine list, and very reasonable, surely catering for all tastes.

If you’re thinking Mediterranean and that’s hard to avoid at Isolabella, then think no further than fresh fish. From the Specials list, I chose the Sea Bass with Pesto, at op choice even though I say it myself.

I know from experience that chef Gianni is a whizz with fish and so it proved, once again.

Arriving on a bed of crunchy greens, two hearty fillets, dressed with the aforementioned vibrant green sauce, delivered one of the best fish dishes I have ever enjoyed.

‘...substantial, yet light and delicious...’

The pesto sauce looked powerful, threatening even, it was anything but, enhancing rather than masking the delicate flavours of the firm white flesh beneath.

Having tasted seafood earlier, Mrs Leyland Leader took the carnivore route with the Italianesque Chicken Arrabiata.

Succulent chicken breast dressed with a toothsome, if fiery tomato, chilli and pepper sauce - a true ‘Italian Job’ if ever there was one -was declared ‘wonderful.’

A dish of piping hot seasonal vegetables, including Jersey Royals (the taste of Summer) accompanied our mains, A superb combination of quality, creativity, tastes and textures on two plates, soon to be despatched and demolished with delight. Well done, Gianni - and all delivered single-handedly by one chef (in full view of the restaurant) whilst catering for the collective needs of the 20-strong birthday party across the room.

Regular review readers will realise that at this point we are ready to down cutlery and listen to our straining bodies - but you also know it’s in the interests of investigative journalism to consider desserts.

And so, after a reasonable rest period we duly devoured, as a double act, Blackcurrant cheesecake with ice cream and a princely portion of profiteroles smothered in chocolate sauce (with more ice cream on the side). Absolutely replete (stuffed) but happy.

The ‘new’ Isolabella was bustling, but throughout the staff found time to ensure everyone was catered for with admirable skill, care, patience and best of all, humour.

The open plan might not be the biggest public dining area in town, but it’s more than adequate to cater for celebration parties (20-strong or much more), family outings or even that intimate, romantic, candlelit dinner for two.

There are special pizza and pasta offers through the week, representing terrific value.

Plus, there’s ‘al fresco’ (outside) dining if the weather permits, takeaways and lunchtime specials.

We had a great night out at Isolabella, an ‘old friend,’ even with a brand new look, never lets you down!

Balancing Act Money Matters with Derbyshire Booth Financial Management Ltd

If you can’t remember the last time you reviewed your pension and saving, now might be a good time to give your hard-earned savings a revamp.

Why rebalance?

Over time a pension or investment portfolio, which uses a collection of funds, will generate different returns from each asset class, causing your asset allocation, and risk exposure, to change. Because of this, the portfolio will usually require ongoing evaluations to manage your exposure to risk and subsequent taxes.

A practical rebalancing plan could be to reduce your exposure to certain asset classes - typically of those that have performed relatively well in comparison to some of your other assets – to asset classes that haven’t performed as well or have fallen in value. asset will ideally rise over time and the expected return will increase; and vice versa if an asset has risen in value.

Often the easiest way to rebalance your portfolio is to invest cash into any of your assets that may need toppingup. However, another technique is to release cash from overweight assets within your portfolio and reinvest this in the underweight assets.

Unfortunately, too many investors only realise they have poor asset allocation when it is too late, which is why prevention is better than cure.

SERVES 4; Preparation time 35 mins ; Cooking time 15 mins Ingredients 4 tbsp olive oil 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped or crushed 2 tbsp anchovy paste or finely chopped anchovies 4 tbsp tomato puree ½ tsp chilli flakes 2 tomatoes, roughly chopped Few basil leaves, plus extra to serve 4 whole mackerel, gutted, heads removed Method 1 Pour 3 tbsp oil into a medium frying pan and heat gently, then add the garlic—if it sizzles, the oil is too hot. Cook for about 3 mins until the garlic is just beginning to brown. Stir in the anchovy paste for 2 mins, then the tomato puree for 2 mins more - you should have a lovely aromatic paste.

2 Add 250ml of water and the chilli flakes

Stir in the chopped tomatoes and basil and keep warm.

3 Heat barbecue. When the flames have died and coals are glowing, season the fish, brush with remaining oil. Lay on the grills, or on a piece of foil to prevent sticking. Cook for 5-6 mins on each side until the fish is charred and just cooked through. You can also do this indoors on a griddle pan.

4 Lift each fish onto a plate, spoon over some of the sauce, scatter with fresh basil, serve with choice of boiled new potatoes, wedges, chips, rocket salad etc.

Who Cares Wins! with Right at Home (Chorley)

WHEN it comes to delivering home care services, a local provider is leading the way in a pioneering partnership with St Catherine’s Hospice.

Right At Home (Chorley) have been designated the domiciliary carers of choice by the Hospice for Chorley, South Ribble and beyond.

The Chorley-based company, in tandem with St Catherines, are rolling out an initiative aimed at helping patients, many with life-shortening illnesses, to enjoy more independence and stay at home longer.

The service is available to the general public and you don’t need to be a patient of St Catherine’s to use it. Those who are eligible can claim statutory funding.

Mary Saward, Registered Care Manager of Right at Home, explained: “All our specialist training is done through St Catherine’s. I believe they saw and approved of the quality of palliative provision we are able to offer.

Our experience enables us to provide a flexible, sensitive, effective bespoke package of support not just for each individual, but also for their families which is vital at this stage.

“I suppose, unlike the main specialised care provided by the Hospice which is delivered free, price was also a factor. The Homecare Partnership – many of our St Catherines eferrals have never actually stayed in the hospice itself – is a domiciliary paid-for service and keeping prices reasonable is important.”

With specialist carers on the books, Right at Home staff are able to respond very quickly to individual needs.

Mary says; “It’s crucial that we react immediately with a planned programme of support that is appropriate. As preferred providers working with St Catherines, we work very hard to quickly build relationships. I know from personal experience how important it is to get

“It’s an exceptional team effort. Not only do we support the patients and their families referred to us by the hospice, but also our own staff. That said, we are dedicated, all our managers are ‘hands-on’ and helping people like this can be extremely rewarding.”

Right at Home owner Mark Booker, added: “We are delighted to be the preferred domiciliary care provider for St Catherine’s Hospice. We are available for care 24/7 and we offer a ‘four hours free trial’ scheme to enable potential clients to sample the quality of service.”

Leading the way in South Ribble A LEYLAND family business has been recognised for making a business out of looking out for other people’s business.

Keith and Ruth Bradshaw, who own the successful business magazine Leyland Leader and organise the popular BB4B (Breakfast Before Business), a monthly networking group, have been awarded the South Ribble Business In the Community Award 2014.

The couple received the award at the recent South Ribble ‘Big Do’ the borough’s annual networking event which brings together business, community, voluntary and public sector organisations.

Councillor Margaret Smith, Leader of the Council, who hosted the presentation of five community awards, explained: “The Business in the Community Award recognises a socially responsible business which actively supports the local community through positive action.”

The Community awards were presented by the Mayor of South Ribble, Councillor Graham Walton.

Keith Bradshaw commented: “We set up our local monthly business magazine in

2005 and through 110 issues we have sought to help other businesses raise their profile in the community. The networking group is nearly three years old and regularly attracts over 40 guests, working hard to increase business throughout South Ribble and beyond.

“It is always encouraging to be recognised in a positive way like this.

The award is down to a real team effort, the BB4B group covers the widest range of local businesses, trades and services. They are great friends, mutually supportive and a delight to work with.”

The Big Do, incorporating the awards ceremony, was staged at the Samlesbury Hotel and hosted by The South Ribble Partnership which seeks to deliver better services in the borough.
