Letter From Katie

December 2018 Vol. 22 Issue 12

Savoring the Simple Joys Of Christmas

W

e didn’t have very elaborate Christmas traditions in my house growing up, but December 25 holds some of my favorite childhood memories. My dad is a physician and was often on call during the holidays. His beeper might interrupt any celebration, so we kept things low-key. On Christmas morning our presents from Santa were laid out, unwrapped and already assembled. We could dive right into playing without waiting. My mom would make cinnamon rolls straight from the tube and we would stay in pajamas most of the day. If my dad wasn’t on call, we might go to a movie. It was lazy bliss. No frantic hustle of traveling, no dressing up for fancy meals. When my first daughter was born, my husband and I decided we would embody that same Christmas laziness. The day would be spent at home, in

our pajamas, no obligations. We would play with new toys, read new books and watch Christmas movies on cable. Technology has somewhat interrupted this tradition in a way that simply didn’t exist when I was a child. Now grandparents can be included by Skype or Facetime, our kids receive electronic toys that don’t require us to play with them, and Netflix means we can watch pretty much anything, not just whatever Christmas classic is on TV. Not all of these tech advances are negative. It’s great to be able to see relatives without the expense and headache of travel. And Netflix has a decent selection of Christmas movies. But I am tempted to cut the cord on Christmas and let our minds take a break from being plugged in all the time. Because my favorite Christmas memories will always be the ones spent at home with just my family and storebought cinnamon rolls. Y

Is Your Child Ready To Stay Home Alone?

Y

ou need a gallon of milk. When is your child old enough to stay home alone while you run a quick errand? Go out for dinner? Staying home alone is an important milestone for every child, and for every parent.

When your child is able to feel safe and confident alone, that can be empowering for both of you! States vary about the age at which children can legally be left alone, ranging from 8 years to 14 years. Some states, like Kentucky, don’t have a minimum age and depend on parents to use their best judgement. Developmentally, most children are not ready before the age of 10. Most importantly, you need to be able to trust your child to handle the responsibility and to follow house rules even when you are absent. It is a good idea to start small and to involve your child in planning. Before you go to get that gallon of milk or make a dinner date, what should you do? t Assess your child’s level of confidence and talk with him about it. t Teach her: w When and how to call 911 w What to do if someone comes to the door w What to say or do if you have a phone call. t Provide him a list of friends or neighbors and their phone numbers. t Create an agreement about: 6 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

w Having friends over w Using the Internet, television or electronics w Using the kitchen w Playing outside w Checking in with you. t Make your house safe by w Putting parental controls in place on electronics w Checking smoke alarms w Keeping doors locked w Locking up guns, medications and alcohol w Being sure there is a charged, working phone available Start with short periods of time (30 minutes or so) and gradually increase. If there are younger children, you must consider their age and maturity as well. When in doubt, hire a sitter. Build trust between you and your child. Verify when necessary. Call when you say you will and come home on time. You are helping your children take steps toward their own independence, and that’s something for all of you to be proud of. Showtimes on the LCT Main Stage are Saturday, Dec. 15 at 11 a.m. (sensory friendly show), 2 p.m. & 7 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. & 4:30 p.m. School matinees will be performed Dec. 11-14 at 10 & 11:45 a.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children. Student ACT Scores Are on the Rise By: Emmanuel Caulk

Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent

N

ational officials with the ACT college entrance exam sounded an alarm last month about declining scores in the United States, saying Class of 2018 graduates’ average ACT math score dropped to the lowest level in more than 20 years, at 20.5. Bucking that national trend, math scores for the Fayette County Public Schools Class of 2018 hit a five-year high of 20.9. Reading achievement also hit a five-year high, while science and English scores were the best in three years. In fact, Fayette County’s seniors outpaced the nation in all areas – significantly besting national and state averages in English, math, reading and science. Overall, the composite ACT scores for the class of 2018 in FCPS was 21.2, well above the U.S. average (20.8) or state average (20.2). Those results are particularly impressive given the fact that Kentucky is one of only 17 states across the nation where all students take the ACT. In most states, only students who are planning to go to college take the ACT.

The graduating class of 2018 in Fayette County had higher composite ACT scores than their peers in all 17 states where 100% of students are assessed, including neighboring Ohio and Tennessee. In addition, greater percentages of FCPS graduates hit college readiness benchmarks in every subject than their counterparts across the state or nation. For example, 33% of Kentucky’s seniors and 40% of America’s seniors reached benchmarks showing they were prepared for college algebra, while 41% of FCPS seniors demonstrated readiness. In science, 38% of FCPS seniors reached college benchmarks compared with 32% of Kentucky seniors and 36% of U.S. seniors. Across the nation, less than 0.2% of Class of 2018 test takers earned a “perfect” composite score of 36 on the ACT – 3,741 out of 1,914,817. In Fayette County, 16 students earned perfect scores – three times the national rate. Members of the Class of 2018 were admitted to 309 colleges and universities, including all 10 of the nation’s best colleges as rated by U.S. News and World Report and all eight Ivy League schools.

FCPS graduates will attend college in 43 states, Washington, D.C., and five countries . Collectively, the Class of 2018 earned more than $103.7 million in scholarship offers, up from roughly $90 million in 2017. Our 2018 graduates also included 70 Governor’s Scholars, 40 Governor’s School for the Arts participants, and nine Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs participants. The Class of 2018 also included 25 graduates who earned the International Spanish Academy diploma, 29 graduates who earned the International Baccalaureate Medallion and 87 students who earned the Seal of Biliteracy. Stellar academic achievement is a tradition for the Fayette County Public Schools and as your servant superintendent, I am committed to building on past accomplishments. Consider this – the amazing Class of 2018 had 36 National Merit Semi-Finalists. The Jefferson County Public Schools, which have more than two times the number of students we do here in Lexington, has 36 National Merit Semi-Finalists this year. Here in FCPS, our Class of 2019 has 51 – the best is yet to come! Y

Is This True? Duct Tape Treats Warts (This column is one in an occasional series that will discuss health tips that you may have heard, read about or seen on the internet.) Does elderberry syrup help prevent (or at least treat) the flu? Although there is no scientific evidence that I could find that elderberry syrup can help prevent influenza, a study 15 years ago through the University of Oslo in Norway showed that a specific elderberry extract called Sambucol was effective in treating the flu. In a group of 60 patients with influenza (90% type A, 10% type B), half were given Sambucol and half were given a placebo. The patients in the Sambucol group had less intense flu symptoms and were cured in 2-3 days. The placebo group took at least 6 days to be cured. Sambucol may have worked in the study because it contains antioxidants called flavonoids that stimulate the immune system.

It also contains anthocyanins, which are anti-inflammatory. Does cold weather make you sick? Colds and influenza peak in the winter, which may be one of the reasons that cold weather gets blamed for illness. Cold and colds are correlated, but one does not cause the other. We know that viruses and bacteria are what make us sick, but there are reasons why there is more illness when the weather is cold. Some viruses, especially influenza A, do not spread as far and as fast when the air is humid. During the winter, the outside air is colder and usually less humid. Inside, central heating makes the air warmer but also less humid. Rhinoviruses, which cause colds, replicate better when the air is colder. Is swallowing gum dangerous? Gum consists mostly

of synthetic or natural gum resin. While we cannot digest it, the gum usually goes right through our gastrointestinal tract and comes out in our bowel movements. Only if gum is swallowed in large amounts or with more substantial undigestible items (such as coins) does it tend to cause obstructions. Should you treat warts with duct tape? This is one of those ideas that seems so bizarre that there is no way that it could be true- but it is. There may be something in the adhesive that triggers a patient’s immune system to attack the wart, but nobody is completely sure how it works. Y

A specialist in Vision Therapy, which is a kind of physical therapy for the eyes, brain and body, Dr. Graebe burns with a passion to help patients. The idea that people who need his services couldn’t receive them is anathema to him. “We’ve grown over the years and we’re as busy as we can be,” he said. “It would be sad and heartbreaking if we had to put people on a waiting list. That’s what this expansion is all about.” Construction began in November on an addition to Dr. Graebe’s offices in Versailles. The expansion will add 1,500 square feet of space to the 4,300 squarefoot building that has been home to his practice since 2000. Franklin’s Fred Farrier Is a Fast Starter

ince football is so dependent on size, it’s unusual for underclassmen to make an impact on their high school teams. But exceptions to the rule manage to break through. Meet one such exception – Fred Farrier, a blazing fast wide receiver and defensive back for Franklin County High. Fred not only made the varsity as a freshman last year, he played a key role for the Flyers, catching 26 passes for 222 yards, and picking off a team-high four passes, including a 41-yard interception return for a touchdown. He rushed for 104 yards and scored another touchdown, which added up to a significant debut season. This year, Fred has blossomed into a star for the Flyers, who won 10 of their first 12 games, including two playoff victories in the playoffs. Through the first seven games, Fred averaged a TD catch per game and totaled 38 receptions for 504 yards, including 62-yard and 71-yard scoring plays. A two-way player, the 6-foot, 155-pound sophomore rarely comes off the field. Fred is proud that he started as a freshman and one of his biggest thrills came this season against rival Anderson County when he had nine catches for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Bolstered by a strong freshman foot-

ball season, Fred went out for track for the first time. Guess what? He was an instant sensation. He won the Frankfort city meet in the long jump and triple jump, and placed second in the Region in the triple jump. Not bad for a newcomer. “I am so proud of him,” his mother Danita said. “He’s experienced a lot of success at an early age, and through it all he remains humble. “He gets the crowd excited with a phenomenal play and just hands the ball to the ref and moves on. “He never boasts or brags. He’s very even keel. He’s a shining example of true sportsmanship.” Fred always puts the team first. “I enjoy how it takes the whole team to make things work. “The linemen tell you, ‘I got you. We’re gonna get you into the end zone.’ It takes everybody to make it happen.” Fred, 16, is no slouch in the classroom either. He was a straight-A student as a freshman and Academic All State. Last year, he had a 3.75 GPA. His goal is to earn an offer at a Division I college where he can play football and earn a degree. More immediately, he wants to lead Franklin County to a State title and keep scoring touchdowns. “I’m never satisfied,” he said. “I score a TD and I want another one right away.” Y
