Lexington is at the crossroads of several highways. Highway 30 and Interstate 80 are the main east-west by-ways across Nebraska, while Highways 283 and 21 connect locations from South Dakota to Kansas. Travelers in the past also made their way through Dawson County using one or more of five trails. Oregon Trail: Possibly the most well known trail made its way through Dawson County, the Oregon Trail. The route was the most widely used of all the trails, with more than half a million people using the route for over 25 years. Many of the area’s early communities can trace their roots to the trail. Pony Express Route: A symbol of the growth westward during the 1800s, the Pony Express was the first link to early settlers. The service was short-lived, operating from 1860-61, delivering between St. Joseph, Mo., and Sacramento, Calif., until the advent of the telegraph. Mormon Trail: Nearly 100,000 early adventurers crossed near the future site of Lexington by following the Mormon Trail. The trail loose-

ly followed the north bank of the Platte River, which later proved to be a viable footprint for the Lincoln Highway and Interstate 80. Lincoln Highway: The nation’s first transcontinental auto route ran along the Platte River. U.S. Highway 30, recognized as the Lincoln Highway, still serves as an east-west route across Nebraska. Union Pacific Railroad: The Iron Road was the name given to the first transcontinental railroad. In 1865, Union Pacific began laying rails along the Great Platte River Road, and promoted settlement by selling land in the fertile Platte River Valley.

Dawson County is located on what was the first transcontinental highway--the overland route to the west. The county was formed in 1871 - just four years after the state joined the Union on March 1, 1867. It has played a major part in the development of Central Nebraska and even in the country because so much of the nation’s early history was shaped by the people who passed through here on the Oregon, Overland and Mormon Trails as well as the Union Pacific Railroad and later on, the Lincoln Highway and U.S. Highway 30. The discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill, near what is now Sacramento, California, on Jan. 24, 1848, touched off the greatest migration of history. Then and now, the plains continue to be the preferred route to and from the west. Interstate 80 and Highway 30 now flank the Union Pacific Railroad, while the big airliners fly overhead on the route. The early immigrants had the glitter of gold in their eyes, and failed to see the gold lying beneath the soil of the Platte Valley--the gold of agriculture and the water to make it pay.

During the fall of 1866 the Union Pacific Railroad was built through Dawson County and settlement of the area began. In April of 1872, the first major group of settlers, known as the “Philadelphia Colony” arrived from the East. By 1874, enough people had come to Plum Creek that the community was incorporated.

Settlement of Plum Creek drew people from a wide variety of backgrounds and even today the residents of Lexington reflect a melting pot of cultures. With the arrival in 1989 of IBP, Inc., now a member of the Tyson Fresh Foods family – the community’s ethnic mix now includes over 20 different ethnic groups. Lexington was named an “All America City” by the National Civic League in 1973, with Dawson County receiving the “All America City” award in 1993. It is the only county in Nebraska to be so honored.

LEXINGTON Lexington began as a frontier trading post called Plum Creek in 1860 when the Daniel Freeman family settled along the Oregon Trail south of the Platte River. The trading post was prosperous, but as an outpost was vulnerable to the dangers of the trail. The Plum Creek Massacre took place on Aug. 7, 1864, near the Freeman’s business and the family was forced to flee to Ft. Kearny and the trading post was destroyed. During the summer and fall of 1864, Indians frequently attacked settlers and freighting wagons taking goods across the Plains. On the morning of the Plum Creek Massacre, nearly 100 Cheyenne Indians attacked trains near the Plum Creek Station killing 11 and taking the wife of the freighter hostage, along with a young boy, who was the son of one of the other wagon drivers. Nancy Jane Morton survived the attack and six months later was ransomed by a trader. She returned to her native Iowa, remarried and wrote her memoirs, which were the basis for the book, “Captive of the Cheyenne,” published by the Dawson County Historical Museum.

10

One of the more colorful incidents in the Plum Creek area in late 1878 involved the Olives. I.P. “Print” Olive and others were accused of hanging two Custer County men in retribution for killing their brother, Bob Olive Stephens. After the bodies were hung they later were burned, but the burning was never attributed to the Olives. The real culprits will never be known, but postcards showing the grisly scene were circulated nationwide at the time.

Lexington is undergoing a transformation. New awnings, façade restorations and renovations have all been occurring since the Lexington Main Street program began in October of 2001. The community has installed historic lighting to complement its historic brick streets and two historic buildings – the former First National Bank at the corner of Sixth and Washington and the Dawson County Courthouse – both of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

SURROUNDING AREAS Following this and other events, the town forefathers decided Plum Creek needed an image makeover. In 1889, the town’s name was changed by a write-in vote to Lexington in an effort by the community to distance themselves from their less-than-stellar reputation. With construction of a bridge over the Platte River south of Lexington and designation of Lexington as the county seat, the community soon became a trading hub.

To the west of Lexington sits Cozad, a landmark in westward development. In the 1860s, railroads were racing to the 100th Meridian, since the first to reach that point would win the right to build on toward California. The Union Pacific won that race and in the early 1870s, Ohio businessman John J. Cozad was traveling west on the Union Pacific when he saw the 100th Meridian sign near what is present-day Cozad. He returned to his home in Ohio and organized a company of people to help him

develop the town, which later was named after him.

recently by members of the Overton Boy Scouts.

Further west is the town of Gothenburg, whose history is intertwined with the various trails that passed through the area, including the Mormon and Oregon Trails and the Pony Express mail route. Known as the “Pony Express Capital of Nebraska,” Gothenburg boasts two Pony Express stations. One is still located on its original site on the Lower 96 Ranch, four miles south of Gothenburg. Protected by a second roof, it retains its original form and became part of the ranch, which was built in 1897.

Slightly northeast of Lexington is Sumner, which first appeared on the map when the post office was established there on Aug. 6, 1889. Named for Sen. Charles Sumner of Massachusetts, an advocate of the abolition of slavery, Sumner was surveyed in June and platted in July of 1890.

The second station was located on the Upper 96 Ranch, 24 miles west of the Lower 96 Ranch. In 1931, Mrs. C.A. Williams, whose family owned the ranch, donated the building to the Gothenburg American Legion. Members dismantled it and rebuilt it in Gothenburg’s Ehmen Park. The building was dedicated in memory of the Pony Express riders and pioneers of the Old West and is still in the park, open to the public. Overton, just east of Lexington, was settled in

Union Pacific’s steam locomotive known as The Challenger is the largest operating steam locomotive in the world. It was built in 1943 and can occasionally be seen, as shown here in Lexington.

1873 by the James M. Potter family and the post office was established on June 3, 1873. The community was named in honor of a government official who was in charge of men guarding construction workers on the Union Pacific Railroad. It continued to be part of the nation’s crosscountry transportation system as first the Lincoln Highway, and later U.S. Highway 30 passed through the community. A historic Lincoln Highway bridge is located just east of the village and was refurbished

Lexington Public Library

Also northeast of Lexington is Eddyville, which was originally named Congdon. This tiny Dawson County community traces its beginnings to a post office established May 23, 1881, three miles southwest of the present village. Officials of the Kearney and Black Hills Railroad, whose line opened through the Wood River Valley that fall changed the name to Eddyville on Nov. 12, 1890. The village was named for a Miss Eddy, an acquaintance of John H. Hamilton, president of both the railroad and the Wood River Improvement Co., which bought and platted the community in the summer of 1890.

Lexington’s home in Dawson County makes it part of one of the larger counties in the state of Nebraska. With so much space, it is not surprising there are plenty of recreational activities, unique attractions and oneof-a-kind events that are scattered throughout the community, some steeped in tradition and some hidden treasures. In and around Lexington, one of the most popular and quickest growing attractions is the winery industry. Lexington is home to Mac’s Creek Vineyards, a family operated winery. Locals enjoy Nebraska grown and produced wine at facilities overlooking vineyards and the beauty of Nebraska’s nature. One can also enjoy the stock car races during the summer months at the Dawson County Fairgrounds in Lexington where three classes race: the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stockcars and IMCA Hobby Stocks. Each year, one of the country’s most rare birds, the bald eagle,

travels to areas along the Platte River from as far away as Canada, Alaska and the Great Lakes states. Nearly 200 of these patriotic symbols find a wintering area with an abundant food supply along the river, reservoirs and the supply canal below Central Nebraska Public Power & Irrigation District (CNPPID) J-2 hydro plants south of Lexington. Area Chambers of Commerce along with CNPPID make the bald eagle viewing possible during the winter months. The Platte River is also an ideal spot to watch the Sandhill Crane Migration. Bird watchers can get even more shots at the viewing site at Lexington’s Heartland Museum. This pond east of the museum is a natural habitat for Canadian Geese.

Six museums encompass the complex and intriguing, history of the county. They showcase some of the most treasured vehicles in the armed services; highlight the complex past of Cozad’s founder and follow the trails of the once, groundbreaking Pony Express Ride. Find more history while traveling the Platte River Historic Trails, a winding tour through the county that combines the Mormon, Oregon and Pony Express trails. If fishing and hunting is an interest, Lexington and the surrounding area provides a lot of water and a lot of game. There is fishing at Gallagher State Recreation Area, Midway Lake, Platte River, TriCounty Canal, Elwood Reservoir, Gallagher Canyon, Plum Creek Canyon, Johnson Lake and any of the smaller lakes, canals and reservoirs scattered throughout the county. Johnson Lake is best known for white bass and walleye fishing, yielding hundreds of “Master Angler” fish over the years. Other species found in Dawson County are crappie, wipers, channel and flathead catfish, striped and largemouth bass, northern pike and perch.

The Lexington Chamber of Commerce can offer help with directions and suggestions on contacting landowners for permission to hunt. Enjoy swimming, biking or the outdoors at Lexington’s Family Aquatic Center, which caters to all ages with its zero-depth pool, water slide, lap pool, diving pool, snack bar, sand volleyball and sand play area. Hiking/biking trails are also a popular recreational activity with sever-

Each year, local and visiting hunters can hunt prime land for deer, quail, pheasant, turkey, ducks, geese, rabbit and grouse. At Lexington’s Plum Creek Medical Center, residents find top-notch medical attention. The facility offers medical offices, imaging and emergency care units, family planning information, geriatrics, etc. The Tri-County Hospital, bordering the Plum Creek Medical Center, employs more than 200 people in its 25-bed facility. Laboratories, emergency care, delivery and newborn care, in- and outpatient surgery and consultative services are provided at the hospital. Patient service departments such as the emergency room and laboratories were updated in 2009 when the hospital underwent a major remodel. The hospital formed specialty clinics in 1992 out of need for cardiac rehabilitation. Since then, the rehab clinics have grown into areas of general surgery, nephrology, neurology, orthopedics, OBGYN, pulmonary and podiatry. The advances, particularly in cardiac rehab, are top-notch. Patients dealing with heart procedures such as bypass, stents and heart attacks are seen there. The clinic performs EKGs, nuclear stress tests (20 percent more accurate than treadmills), sleep apnea screenings, ECHOs and holter monitors. The clinic sees 5,400 patients a year and about 459 a month. The Plum Creek Care Center is a skilled nursing facility with speech, physical therapy and occupational therapy services. PCCC is licensed for 66 beds, of which 10 are located in a unit for patients undergoing rehabilitation. Two of the units are set up for respite care, one on the nursing side and one on the assisted living side. The facility provides a continuum of care, including 29 units in the assisted living addition, which also provides both long- and short-term options. PCCC underwent renovation in 2006, completing a new main entrance

Located in the heart of American agriculture, Orthman Mfg,. Inc. Lexington, Nebraska serves a world wide agricultural marketplace. Founder, Henry Orthman first capitalized on the advancement of tractor design in 1965 by developing innovative attachments to improve major brand name cultivator versatility. Today Orthman’s innovative products, born as a result of long-term relationships with America’s agricultural producers, provide working solutions for the agricultural industry. Orthman Mfg., Inc. continues to foster the strong producermanufacturer relationship the company was founded on over 40 years ago. Orthman’s broad North American OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) clientele utilize Orthman toolbars and guidance components on major manufacturer planters and harvesting equipment. Orthman tillage, grain handling, guidance, and earth moving equipment can be found throughout the world ranging from the cotton fields of Australia, the sugar cane fields of Columbia, the road construction in Denmark, and of course, all major agricultural markets throughout the United States. Orthman products are designed and manufactured to the pinnacle of structural integrity for which the company is well recognized. Orthman is known for the financial benefit provided to the end users through the use of Orthman equipment. “We will forever continue the ideals, traditions, and commitment to our customers which the Orthman family established decades ago. Orthman continues today as a closely held family owned enterprise with an enduring challenge that has been, and always will be, to keep the industry that feeds us, efficient.” President John McCoy. Orthman would like to thank all area producers for their past and present support of Orthman Manufacturing. Images (from top): 1. A spring rainbow falls upon the farm. 2. A calm fall evening allows the dust to hover over a gravel country road. 3. Harvest is in full swing. 4. An American flag proudly sways atop a local grain pile. 5. An Orthman implement is used for spring planting preparation. 6. Area farmers visit the Orthman Research farm located just north of Lexington. 7. A row of antique John Deere tractors are set for the auction as locals size up the machines. 8.
