PETER BREMERS:

REFLECTIONS OF THE WEST

Characterized by their rich, earth-hued angular structures and intricately cut channels, the recent works in Dutch artist Peter Bremers’ exhibition, Reflections from the West: Canyons & Deserts, evoke the austere and awe-inspiring landscape formations of the American Southwest. He uses gestures of the hand to approximate the visual effects of erosion and stratification in his kiln-cast glass, and proposes a dynamic contrast between human and geologic time.

reflected in the environment.” His vision is to stand inside a small crevice, a slot in the earth, surrounded by the sculptures created over hundreds of thousands of years by wind and water, reflecting light on hard and soft lines in glowing colors, and re-create that space in its essence as a composition of colors, structures, lines and volumes. Peter Bremers was born in 1957 in Maastricht, The Netherlands, where he studied sculpture at the University of Fine Arts from 1976 to 1980 and threedimensional design at the Jan van Eyck Academie from 1986 to 1988. Recognized as one of the world’s leading glass artists, his work is included in the permanent collections of such significant public institutions as the Kunstgewerbe Museum, Berlin; the Boymans van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam; the Museo de Arte Vidrio Mava, Madrid; and the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, among numerous others.

Much of Bremers’ inspiration is born out of his numerous travels across Asia, New Zealand, Africa, America, and Antarctica. These voyages extend into the personal realm of a near mystical encounter with place. In his Canyons & Deserts series, he shapes glass into canyons to create an experience rather than a literal reproduction – an expression of the encounter between man and nature. As he puts it, “it’s about finding yourself
