SECTION 3

Build simple jigs to hold the work at the needed angle to make a cut. This spline miter jig uses only a piece of MDF with a support block screwed to it at 45 degrees.

Make a tall tenoning jig so you can attach a support block high up on it. Then you can also use a clamp on the work.

Make up a thin push stick to move thin stock past the sawblade.

Use a push stick in situations when your fingers might get too close to the exit spot of a blade.

Use push sticks whenever the fence gets too close to the blade. A fist’s width is my rule of thumb: Smaller than a fist, I use a push stick. Use push sticks for any cut that might put your fingers close to the exit point of the blade. For extra-thin stock use an extra-thin push stick. A featherboard and push stick used together will allow you to cut safely.

Use a featherboard with a push stick to safely move narrow stock past the sawblade when making a rabbet or groove cut.
