Sweet Home Alabama is the mantra of the many smiling folks whom golf travelers encounter in Alabama. From the bag boys and beverage cart girls on our world-class golf courses to the servers and chefs in our award-winning restaurants, visitors are made to feel right at home. And they’re made to feel safe, as the golf courses and hotels uphold the most stringent safety and cleanliness standards to ensure a stress-free visit. Plus, with 30 nine-hole courses and eight short courses, golfers just getting started or working in a quick round can all be accommodated. The incomparable Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail put Alabama on the radar of traveling golfers more than 25 years ago. The ensuing years have seen the growth of award-winning hotels, spas, and luxurious resorts; exciting

craft breweries with medal-quality beers; world-renowned bass fishing and red snapper rodeos; and a thriving culinary scene of seafood joints with the freshest catch, fine dining, pubs and a BBQ Trail. Professional golfers love visiting the state as well, giving the Southern hospitality they experience in Alabama as the main reason. In fact, the LPGA has held tournaments on the RTJ Golf Trail for over 20 years; Auburn-Opelika has hosted NCAA and PGA TOUR events; and the 2018 U.S. Women’s Open was held at Shoal Creek near Birmingham. From Coastal Alabama in the south to the Mountain Lakes region in the north, Alabama is truly a special place to visit and experience some of the most challenging and affordable golf courses in America. Come take it all in, right here in Sweet Home Alabama.

In fact, three of the locations on the RTJ Spa Trail were named in the top 20 of the 100 best spas by Spas of America. They are Marriott Grand National at number 8, Ross Bridge at number 9 and Marriott Shoals at number 17. The Marriott Shoals Hotel and Spa in Florence is located across the Tennessee River from the 36-hole RTJ Golf Trail at the Shoals. In addition to the spa, hotel amenities include the

World-class golf resorts and award-winning spas have sprung up all around Alabama. And they are doing all they can to make guests feel safe and stay healthy. Gulf Shores is home to the state’s only golf resort on the Gulf of Mexico. Kiva Dunes offers condos along the 18th fairway of the Jerry Pate-designed course and above the 6-story clubhouse. The resort also offers a restaurant, three pools, and a beach club along their private beach. South of Birmingham, Pursell Farms in Sylacauga is a multi-faceted stay and play spot offering golf cottages, an 8-room lodge, a spa, and a new Inn. The Inn, with its restaurant

fitness center, outdoor resort pool complex, full convention facilities, and two on-site restaurants, including 360º Grille, the state’s only revolving restaurant with sweeping views. Renaissance Ross Bridge Resort near Birmingham is arguably the state’s most luxurious resort, featuring fine dining, a sports bar, lobby lounge, the world-class spa, spacious fitness center, indoor and outdoor pools, meeting and banquet facilities and the 8,200-yard golf course. The Marriott at Grand National in Auburn-Opelika is one of the original hotels along the Trail, and with the addition of 95 more guest rooms and

the top-rated, three-story spa, it is one of the most-visited stay and play locations in the state. It also boasts a pub and restaurant, resort-style indoor and outdoor pools with bar service, eight tennis/pickleball courts, meeting rooms and 54 holes of onsite RTJ golf. The Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa on Mobile Bay is a member of Marriott’s Autograph Collection. Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is a visually stunning collection of masterpiece courses, carved out of the hills, valleys, and marshes of Alabama. A total of 468 holes on 26 courses provides an unforgettable experience to golfers looking for something really special on their next golf vacation. Over 100 miles of golf were built to stand the test of time. The courses were designed by Mr. Jones with two major objectives in mind: to challenge the world’s best golfers for years to come and to provide an enjoyable round for the casual or beginning player. And the Trail’s efforts to encourage economic

growth and boost tourism in the state have been a huge success. In fact, the renowned golf travel expert, Joe Passov (formerly of golf.com) named the RTJ Golf Trail among his three favorite golf destinations for a fall buddies trip. When the first course along Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail opened in 1992, the golf vacation experience was changed forever. Traveling all around Alabama, golf groups try to play as many courses in a trip as possible, and they come back year after year to fit in a few more of the eleven sites and eight hotels sprinkled around the state.

The Shoals, Muscle Shoals/Florence

Ross Bridge, Hoover/Birmingham

The Shoals offers 36 holes in northwest Alabama. The Fighting Joe course, named the best new course by GOLF® in 2005, runs along the Tennessee River and measures 8,072 yards. Length will present the biggest challenge, as the rolling fairways are pretty straightforward. The Schoolmaster course is a bit more challenging with more narrow fairways and protected greens.

Just outside Birmingham, located a few miles from Oxmoor Valley is the Trail’s only single course facility. Measuring 8,184 yards, the stadium-style course offers spectacular views and a “big-shouldered, muscular” layout. It’s not for the weak at heart. But the on-site Renaissance Ross Bridge Resort and Spa offers a nice respite from a challenging day on the links.

Hampton Cove, Huntsville

Silver Lakes, Anniston/Gadsden

This northern site on the Trail is one of the most unique. It features two completely different championship layouts and an 18-hole links-style Short Course. The Highlands features beautiful vegetation and lots of elevation changes, while the River is flat, yet scenic, as it winds its way along the Flint River. It is also the only RTJ design with no bunkers.

Located amidst the scenic splendor of the Talladega National Forest, Silver Lakes sports three of the most beautiful and challenging nines. Heartbreaker is considered the toughest nine on the Trail; Backbreaker offers breathtaking vistas; and Mindbreaker demands precision. The nine-hole Short Course features water on seven holes.

Grand National, Auburn/Opelika

Oxmoor Valley, Birmingham This site combines the spectacular views and tremendous elevational changes of the Ridge Course with the peaceful serenity of the Valley Course. The Ridge is densely wooded with rolling fairways and perfectly maintained greens. The Valley offers sparkling lakes and a challenging uphill finishing hole. There’s also and fun and challenging Short Course.

This first Trail facility to open for play was praised by Mr. Jones himself as the greatest site for a golf course he had ever seen. The facility boasts two of the most challenging courses on the Trail, Links and Lake, an exciting Short Course and an on-site AAA four-diamond Marriott hotel. Plus, the Lake Course has hosted both the PGA TOUR and NCAA Championships.

Capitol Hill, Prattville

Cambrian Ridge, Greenville

This locale, just north of Montgomery, has three 18-hole full length courses. The Senator, a links course with huge pot bunkers and soaring mounds, hosts the LPGA’s future players each fall; the Legislator features tall pines and the famous Sky Bridge; and the Judge offers one of the most spectacular first tee shots anywhere.

South of the capital, this 36-hole complex is one of the true jewels of the Trail. The Canyon nine’s changes in elevation include a 200-foot drop from tee to fairway; Sherling runs along the lake and features a double-green on nine; and Loblolly boasts stately pines and undulating fairways. The nine-hole Short Course is nestled perfectly along the lake.

Magnolia Grove, Mobile

Highland Oaks, Dothan In Alabama’s southeast corner, this site is known for its tremendous length and shimmering lakes. The Marshwood nine trumpets the longest hole on the Trail, the 701-yard par-5 sixth; Highlands is wide open but many lakes come into play; and Magnolia features the massive, signature trees and a 1,000 foot wooden bridge. The nine-hole Short Course is exciting too.

Having hosted the LPGA for sixteen years, the Crossings course is wellknown to golfing fans around the world. The hilly terrain and elevated greens are a challenge. The 18-hole Falls course features massive bunkers and exciting greens. Both were recently renovated to create more player friendly layouts. The Short Course is an exciting test of golf as well..

course to reach over 8,000 yards, yet the links-style layout is pretty straightforward. The more traditional layout found on Schoolmaster requires thoughtful strategy and precision. Situated along the banks of the Tennessee River, many of the holes, plus the clubhouse, offer spectacular panoramic views. A more picturesque site would be hard to find. Additionally, one of the eight hotels in the RTJ Golf Trail Resort Collection is located across the river in Florence - the Marriott Shoals Hotel & Spa. The Shoals is typical of Alabama’s Golf Trail – great value, consistent conditioning, challenging golf, and great customer service.

The fertile valleys, rolling hillsides, and pristine lakes of North Alabama have provided golf course architects with an amazing pallette from which to create their designs. The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail sites in the region are truly unique. In the northwest corner, the cities of Muscle Shoals, Florence, Sheffield, and Tuscumbia form the area collectively known as “the Shoals.” The Shoals is best known as the "Hit Recording Capital of the World" since many of the top songs of the 60s and 70s were recorded here. The RTJ Golf Trail at the Shoals features two championship courses. The Fighting Joe was the first Trail

The Point Mallard Golf Course is almost 7,000 yards long from the tips and offers exceptional conditioning and a fair test of golf. Most notably, it’s been called the “best value in North Alabama” by a Yelp reviewer. Hampton Cove in Huntsville is the other RTJ Golf Trail site in the most northern part of the state. Two totally different experiences await at Hampton Cove with the Highlands and the River courses. The Highlands is a Scottish-links style course where Japanese black pines, massive oaks, dogwoods and crepe myrtle abound. It’s very picturesque, even featuring an old mule barn adjacent to the 5th hole that has become quite a conversation piece over the years. And the River Course has the distinction of being the only Robert Trent Jones design without a single bunker. The course was laid out on a former soybean plantation at the edge of the Flint River flood plain. Great care was used to incorporate the wonders of Mother Nature into the

Also in the Shoals area, Cypress Lakes in Muscle Shoals is another fun test of golf. The facility features a beautiful championship course with new Mini Verde greens. And just down the road is one of the four Alabama State Park golf courses at Joe Wheeler State Park in Rogersville. It offers an 18-hole course, designed by Alabama’s own Earl Stone. One of Stone’s early efforts, it’s a fun open course that’s also got some bite from the tips. On the shores of Wheeler Lake, the state park resort features a waterfront lodge with restaurant and convention facilities, full-service marina with permanent and overnight docking slips, camping, and lakeside cottages. Farther east in Decatur, Point Mallard Park is a complete family recreational facility, offering great outdoor activities. The 750-acre park lies hidden among North Alabama's densely wooded pines and has camping, hiking trails, biking trails and an 18-hole championship golf course.

restaurant, campground, and fullservice marina. The two courses available are the Lake and the Plantation. The Lake is a George Cobb design that sports views of the water from every hole. The Plantation course is known for pristine greens, open fairways, and numerous hazards. Guntersville, just a bit south of Scottsboro, and the locale of several championship golf courses, is situated perfectly to be a home base for a golf vacation to the northeast corner of Alabama. Eighteen masterfully crafted holes covering just under 6,900 yards and offering awe-inspiring beauty, with a choice of difficulty ranging from moderate to pretty darn tough, are what you’ll find at Gunter’s Landing. The course is listed in Alabama’s top ten by Golfweek raters and plays out along peaceful valleys and rolling hills, with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain ridge. Limestone Springs is one of six accessible courses in Alabama designed by University of Alabama alumnus and U.S. Open winner, Jerry Pate. The scenic course is nestled in the rolling Appalachian foothills. It is a tree-lined layout with narrow Bermuda fairways and large undulating Bentgrass greens. The Lake House at Cherokee Ridge is the perfect spot for golf groups. Situated high on a knoll overlooking both the golf course and a sparkling 17-acre lake, it has seven large guests rooms and baths, plus full kitchen and outdoor patio The region is also home to Limestone Springs, located in the small town of Oneonta, just 45 minutes

in Alabama are partnered with unique lodging. They are Pursell Farms in Sylacauga, at number one and Renaissance Ross Bridge Resort and Spa, ranked third on the prestigious list. Additionally, both golf resorts were named in GOLF® magazine’s inaugural “best resort for buddies” list. Alabama’s largest city, Birmingham, has certainly become golf central, with so many great courses from which to choose. And the Renaissance Ross Bridge Resort and Spa leads the way. The AAA four-diamond rated resort includes the 8,191-yard golf course that’s part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. It’s the fifth longest course in

The whole golfing world had its eyes on Central Alabama when Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand defeated Hyo-Joo Kim of South Korea in a four hole playoff at the 2018 U.S. Women’s Open. This most prestigious event in women’s golf was played at Shoal Creek outside Birmingham. Although the Jack Nicklaus design is private, there are plenty of other courses to come visit. Golf locales in this region are a dichotomy of sorts, featuring both the bustling city nightlife and laid-back towns with a slower pace. Those two stay and play options couldn’t be more apparent than by the fact that two of GolfWeek’s “best courses you can play”

the world. The layout flows in a clover leaf fashion, returning to a central locale no fewer than five times. Even with its intimidating length from the back tees, elevational changes, and water holes, Ross Bridge is still a welcoming resort course at heart with wide fairways and receptive greens. It’s ranked in the top ten, according to GOLF® Magazine’s most recent “Best Public Golf Courses” rankings and Golf Digest named it an Editor’s Choice. It’s not just golf editors who speak so highly of Alabama’s most luxurious resort. Travel+Leisure ranked Ross Bridge among the top 500 hotels in the world; Conde Nast Traveler named it among the best hotel spas; and TripAdvisor awarded Ross Bridge Resort its prestigious Certificate of Excellence. Most notably, the exterior resembles a Scottish castle with soaring turrets and stonework, and at dusk, a lone bagpiper makes his way around the hotel paying tribute to the birthplace of golf.

Situated just a mile away from Ross Bridge is Oxmoor Valley, the Trail’s first Birmingham site. It offers two unique full-length courses, The Ridge and The Valley, plus an exciting 18-hole Short course. The Ridge Course has tight tree-lined fairways and huge changes in elevation, while the Valley Course is more open off the tee and more aesthetically pleasing with its gently, rolling fairways and meticulously landscaped backdrop. Located in the historic Highlands neighborhood of Birmingham sits Alabama’s oldest golf course, Highland Park. The course has been the site of many important golf tournaments including one of Bobby Jones' first victories and boasts smooth Bentgrass greens and rolling terrain. Highland Park is one of eight courses in the state managed by Alabama’s own Honours Golf Company, a division of Troon®. Just south of Birmingham in Pelham is Ballantrae Golf Club. equipped two-bedroom cabins that are open year-round. Playing 7,000 yards from the back tees, FarmLinks at Pursell Farms, located southeast of Birmingham in the small town of Sylacauga, is the world’s first "research & demonstration" golf course. The facility was built to experiment with and showcase golf course machinery, irrigation systems, and fertilizer to visiting course superintendents. In addition to its number one ranking from Golfweek, many golfers who have played the course and submitted reviews on GolfAdvisor have rated FarmLinks the best course in the state. The boutique resort offers stay and play golf packages in several four bedroom, luxurious cottages, in the eight bedroom Parker Lodge and in the brand new 40-room Inn at Pursell Farms. countryside, features a restaurant and pub, high-tech meeting space, a wellappointed spa, outdoor pool, fitness facilities and first-rate fly-fishing, hunting, lessons, and sporting clays at its Orvis® Shooting Grounds. Just west of Greater Birmingham, Tuscaloosa is home to an awardwinning golf course. Ol’ Colony is another Jerry Pate design. It features rolling hills, tall pines and live oaks, plus large fairway bunkers and water throughout. It’s been named by Golf Digest and GolfWeek as a “Best Municipal Course”. Also, in Tuscaloosa is NorthRiver Yacht Club which is

available for overnight guests of the Yellowhammer Inn. The 18 hole layout was originally designed by Gary Player but Bob Cupp renovated it in 2015. About an hour northeast of Birmingham, between Anniston and Gadsden, lies the RTJ Golf Trail at Silver Lakes. The site, which is made up of three really tough 9-hole courses, suitably named Mindbreaker, Backbreaker and Heartbreaker, just underwent several enhancements, such as new Champion ultra dwarf putting surfaces. The 9-hole Short Course offers magnificent views of the surrounding landscape. CONTINUED ON PAGE 31.

this par 4 must carry the corner of the lake, while the approach must reach a pedestal green protected by boulders. Twelve holes on the Lake Course hug the shoreline and its 230-yard, island green 15th has been called “the single prettiest hole on the Trail.” Both courses are included in Golf Digest’s and Golfweek’s rankings of the top courses in the state, Grand National’s Short Course is among the best and most affordable par-3 courses in the U.S. according to GOLF® Magazine. And the Marriott Resort at Grand National was listed among Golf Digest’s Editor’s Choice resorts and maintains AAA Four Diamond status.

Central and southeastern Alabama come together to form the South Region of the state. where you can experience the state’s unique history, culture, waterways and four RTJ Trail facilities. Golf Digest once named Auburn-Opelika the “Most Golfer-Friendly” city in America. This was due in large part to Grand National, the first complex to open along the RTJ Golf Trail. Located about 90 miles southwest of the Atlanta airport, the 54 holes at Grand National were thought to be the favorite site of Robert Trent Jones himself. Capitol Hill in Prattville is just 10 minutes north of the state’s capital, Montgomery. The three full length courses are aptly called The Judge, The Senator, and The Legislator. GOLF® Magazine once named the Judge one of 10 public courses worthy of hosting a U.S. Open and it’s the highest ranked public course on Golf Digest’s most recent “best golf courses in Alabama” list. The course offers a stunning view on the first tee, 200 feet above the fairway overlooking the Alabama River. The Legislator is hilly and more traditional. The Senator is a Scottish links-style course with 160 pot bunkers and mounds reaching up to 40 feet. Overlooking the 17th fairway of the Senator Course, the Prattville Marriott Hotel & Conference Center at Capitol Hill was the first lodging built directly on the RTJ Golf Trail. It features 74 guest rooms, two eight-bedroom villas, a Presidential Cottage, meeting facilities, plus a restaurant and lounge serving Southern fare.

Located in Greenville, 40 miles south of Montgomery, the RTJ Golf Trail at Cambrian Ridge is set along the scenic southernmost edge of the Appalachian foothills. The changes in elevation are extraordinary and the three championship 9-hole courses offer an unforgettable experience. In fact, the Sherling/Canyon combination is ranked sixth in Golfweek’s “best golf courses you can play” in Alabama. Situated in the southeast corner of the state, the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Highland Oaks is comprised of three championship nines and a ninehole Short Course. One of the regulation length courses, Marshwood, is home to a monstrous par-5 boasting 701 yards; and another, Magnolia, features the longest bridge on the Trail - over 1,000 feet spanning the marshes and wetlands so prevalent in the area. The South Region’s history and culinary treasures, plus four Trail sites, make it the perfect home base for an Alabama golf vacation.

Gulf Region

RTJ Golf Trail at Magnolia Grove, Mobile Photo by Jonathan Hoomes, Gray Television

In the Gulf Region of Alabama, experience the history and nightlife of Mobile or the sugar-white sands and clear, blue waters of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Mobile’s premier golfing facility is the 54-hole RTJ Golf Trail at Magnolia Grove. The Crossings Course is very hilly, featuring numerous pulpit bunkers, huge cloverleaf bunkers, and undulating greens that demand extreme caution. It’s a shotmakers course that demands accuracy both from the tee and at approach. Additionally, the course played host to the LPGA for many years. The Falls Course features one of the most talked-about holes on the

entire Trail - the par-five, 570-yard 10th, featuring a waterfall that cascades just below the contoured green. It isn’t as hilly as the Crossings, but it plays a bit longer from the tips. The 18-hole Short Course at Magnolia Grove is considered one of the most challenging on the entire RTJ Golf Trail. On the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay are two of legendary Alabama architect Earl Stone’s most challenging, yet rewarding layouts. At Rock Creek in Fairhope you’ll be amazed at the incredible changes in elevation for this part of the state. But as challenging as the layout can be, this course treats the high handicapper with great respect.

For more information, call 334-242-4169 or visit our website at www.GolfAlabama.org

38

The other Earl Stone course is TimberCreek, located in Daphne, just off Interstate 10. This 27-hole layout offers wide, rolling fairways, carved from a dense forest of magnolias, pines and dogwoods. Also on Mobile’s Eastern Shore, is the Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa, an RTJ Golf Trail resort division property. It was named sixth on Southern Living’s list of “the South’s Best Resorts 2020.” The resort offers the legendary Lakewood Golf Club to visitors to the Eastern Shore. The two upgraded courses at Lakewood, Azalea and Dogwood, meander around spring-fed lakes and are framed by stately magnolia, oaks and dogwoods which have been around for quite some time. Perhaps the signature hole at Lakewood is the 14th on the Azalea course, a par-five with a muchphotographed island green. Steeped in history and located on over 500 secluded acres along Mobile Bay, The Grand Hotel offers superb dining and

many ways to be pampered. The resort has upheld this grand tradition of Southern hospitality, charm and elegance since 1847 and it’s known as the “Grand Dame” of Southern resorts. Coastal Alabama’s sister towns of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach continue to gain popularity with golfers. The area boasts 171 holes of golf within a 15 mile radius, all of which have re-opened after Hurricane Sally paid a visit last fall. Lodging options include beachfront condos and houses, on-site golf condos, as well as traditional hotels. Located on an extraordinary piece of property directly along the Gulf of Mexico, Kiva Dunes is a masterpiece. Based on its rankings and many accolades, Kiva Dunes is arguably the Gulf Coast’s most spectacular layout. It’s the third best course in Alabama, according to Golf Advisor reviewers and it’s in both GOLF® Magazine’s and Golfweek’s top ten lists, as chosen by their professional raters.

TimberCreek Golf Club, Daphne

This Jerry Pate design boasts large, fast greens, huge bunkers are plentiful and the wind and blustery conditions that prevail along the Gulf of Mexico can make for a tough test. Kiva Dunes underwent a major renovation recently to improve the playability of the course for the average golfer, while retaining the challenges enjoyed by more experienced golfers. With 36 holes of Arnold Palmer signature golf, Craft Farms certainly

shaped the golfing landscape in Gulf Shores. The first Palmer design in the area, Cotton Creek, offers a very unique setting. Featuring gently rolling fairways and large undulating greens, it’s very playable from the forward tees and a true test from the tips. It plays over 7,000 yards from the back. The newer of the two Arnold Palmer designs in Gulf Shores is Cypress Bend at Craft Farms. The layout features sprawling bunkers, top-notch greens and year-round lush, green conditions. Earl Stone’s unique design at Peninsula is a 27-hole masterpiece. This course offers generous, elevated Bermuda greens with subtle undulations and some of the finest white-sand bunkers and waste areas. The splendid beauty weaves its way through and among stately live oaks, natural cypress vegetation and more than 30 sparkling lakes. It is arguably CONTINUED ON PAGE 46.
