The township itself has a number of accommodation options , the best being The Top 10 Holiday Park (see opposite) -it’s awesome for families! There’s a daily bus service between Tauranga and Waihi Beach. The main street includes cafes and takeaways. From the northern end of Waihi Beach you can access the beautiful Orokawa Walkway. This 8 km walkway offers fantastic views and winds along the coastline to Orokawa Bay and further up to Homunga Bay, which are both secluded beaches that are great spots for a picnic.

Katikati is known as ‘mural town’. It is a small settlement unlike any other. It gets its name from the 47 murals and sculptures that you can see along the main street, turning this quiet little town into a permanent open air art gallery! Visit KatiKati Bird Gardens (see above) for a fun, relaxing day out that the whole family will love. Enjoy lunch on the café terrace while the children hand-feed the friendly ducks and peacocks.

Waihi is a quiet town with a fascinating past (and industrious present!) steeped in gold and silver mining (see below). Amongst the gold-mining relics and open-pit mining operations you will find it the perfect base for all the outdoor activities - be it bushwalking, mountain-biking or beach going. Karangahake Gorge is a key drawcard to Waihi: a fascinating and enjoyable combination of local history and natural features. Follow one of the many walking tracks to experience old mining tunnels, swing bridges, and the beautiful scenery.

Waihi - New Zealand’s Heart of Gold has a fascinating gold mining past and present. Get the ‘inside story’... Our ‘inside the fence’ tour is a must do if you want to get up close and personal to huge trucks, diggers and other powerful machines in a modern-day working gold mine.
