Telstra Velocity™ Home Wiring An essential guide for new home owners

Telstra Velocity™ Why is home wiring important to your home? When you use Telstra Velocity™ you won’t need any antennas, modems or satellite dishes. Instead, all of your telecommunication and entertainment services will be delivered to your home via a single optical fibre, instead of the traditional copper cable. Because we fit so much into one wire, it needs to include some very important features that vary from standard copper wiring. Your builder will be able to provide you with a quote to wire your home for Telstra Velocity™.

Home wiring must include: 1. General Purpose Outlet: This is a standard electrical power point that should be located close to the cable’s entrance to your house.

What you need to do: 1. Select the Velocity Cabling Design Option that best suits your lifestyle, communication and entertainment needs.

2. F ixed telephone: All fixed line telephone points must be connected to the Optical Network Terminator (ONT).

2. Spend some time thinking about what your communication and entertainment needs are in each room of your home. Write these down.

3. F ree to air TV and pay TV: Any free to air (FTA) and pay TV location points must be connected to the Optical Network Terminator.

3. Discuss these requirements with your builder.

Important: Discuss your home wiring needs with your builder before building your home.

4. B  roadband internet: All internet location points must be connected to the Optical Network Terminator with separate wiring. You do not need a modem to connect to Broadband with Telstra Velocity™; you only need an Ethernet cable running directly from your computer to the wall outlet.

5. Make sure your builder follows the detailed wiring specifications.

Please note: you cannot run your broadband services and your fixed home telephone over the same wires in your home – you need separate wiring. You need to consider your home wiring before you commence building your home.

4. Make sure your builder provides for all of your telecommunication and entertainment needs, as well as the wiring option you choose.

Remember: • Making sure the correct wiring is installed when your home is being built may save money later and will give you the opportunity to enjoy greater flexibility with your services. • Telstra will not be able to provide you access to all services if your home wiring is installed incorrectly.


Cabling Design Option 1

Velocity Basic Essentials This option is designed for a minimal requirement and provides a basic layout of the cabling requirements; ideally this is suited to 1 and 2 bedroom homes/units with a single living area. Flexibility to alter and change services is limited with this option. Typically this configuration would allow for: • 1 data point (for the internet) ∑ • 2 telephone points • 2 TV points.

Prior to connection of the services You will need to:

Telstra will:

• provide a trench for the lead-in cable (commonly shared with the power and water services) • provide a General Purpose Electrical Outlet (GPO) adjacent to the Power Supply Unit (PSU) • ensure sockets/wall plates are fitted off and tested • ensure a cat 5 or 6 cable is run back to the location of the ONT (for internet services) • ensure a cable is run back to the location of the ONT (for phone services) • ensure a coaxial cable (RG6 quad shield) is run from each TV point back to the location of the ONT (for FTA and pay TV services) • provide an RF Splitter on the coaxial cable • purchase a battery if you require battery back up in the PSU.

• install the ONT and the PSU on the wall of your premises • provide the optical fibre lead-in cable • connect the home wiring to the ONT.

Extra equipment You will need to:

• connect the Telstra supplied wireless router to the data socket and plug it into a GPO (for broadband connection) • purchase a digital FTA set-top box (STB) (for free to air TV and only if you don’t have an integrated digital tuner built into your TV) • have Foxtel install a digital STB (for Foxtel services).

Cabling Design Option 2

Velocity Optimiser Essentials This is a basic home networking and entertainment solution. This design provides for a small degree of flexibility and provides a basic cable layout. This option sends all cabling back to a central point (Home Distributor) which allows for the home owner to change the configuration around. This is ideally suited to 2 and 3 bedroom homes/units with several living areas. Typically this configuration would allow for: • 2 data points (for the internet) • 3-4 telephone points • 2 TV points • 1 pay TV point.

Prior to connection of the services You will need to:

Telstra will:

• p∑ rovide a trench for the lead-in cable (commonly shared with the power and water services) • provide a GPO adjacent to the PSU • e∑ nsure sockets/wall plates are fitted off and tested • ensure a cat 5 or 6 cable is run back to the location of the Home Distributor (HD) (for internet services) • e∑ nsure a cable is run back to the location of the HD (for home services) • e∑ nsure a coaxial cable (RG6 quad shield) is run from each TV point back to the location of the HD (for FTA and pay TV) • r∑ un a separate (RG6 quad shield) cable for both FTA and pay TV services • p∑ rovide and install a HD • p∑ urchase a battery if you require battery back up in the PSU • c∑ ross connect the home wiring at the HD • p∑ rovide and run 2 x cat 5/6, 1 x RG6 cable and 1 draw string from the location of the HD to the ONT.
