Careers-In-Transition Programs

LES is developing new programs and enhancing existing ones to support members who are at critical points in their professional lives. Two of these programs are “Network Enabled Teams (NETS)” and “Career Development Webinars.” Read more about both of these programs below and on Page 3.

Network Enabled Teams (NETs)

B

ecause networking is one of the most effective ways to learn about job opportunities, LES has initiated the NETs program to help members extend their networks. The concept of Louise Levien, LES Board Member, NETs virtually gather a small number (10) of participants for a 120-minute kick-off meeting, led by a distinguished LES member. Each session thereafter is focused on careers in a particular interest group, such as High Tech or Consumer Products. All participants agree to share their contact information with other group members and to help each other grow their networks. The kick-off sessions include member introductions and discussion on topics of interest to the group. In advance of the session, the group is invited to submit questions for discussion. At the end of the session, the leader encourages the group to establish a plan to continue the group’s interactions beyond the LES led kick-off meeting. As of August 19, two LES sectors–Life Sciences and High Tech–have launched NETs programs. The first Life Sciences Sector (LSS) virtual meeting was held on June 19, 2020 and led by Louise Levien; Pam Demain, LES Past President; and Frank Barnes, Mentoring award recipient. A second High Tech Sector (HTS) session held on August 11, 2020, was Louise Levien led by Michael Fluhler, Chair of the LES High Tech Sector and the Michigan Chapter. Fluhler is Partner, - Intellectual Property, Litigation and Transactional attorney at Hertz Schram PC. Pam Demain described the successful Life Sciences Sector launch: “Our group consists of ten members at various points in their careers. Most participants have jobs; some are looking to transition, Pam Demain and others want to grow in their job. Some are very experienced, and some are just starting their careers. We meet on Zoom once a month, and we are pleased to have transitioned from a leader-facilitated meeting to a group-led meeting.” Interested in starting a new group in your sector? What You Need To Know Now

“L

ES is all about content, networking and conviviality,” said David Powsner, Meeting Co-chair, explaining what’s in store at the LES 2020 Annual Meeting. Read Powsner’s summary below, and we think you’ll agree that this event will provide all three.

• “On the content side, we’ll take advantage of the online format to provide more than the usual number of panel discussions. We know attendees won’t be able to consume every panel discussion during the six, half-days that make up the meeting, but we will keep this content online for a few months, so attendees can engage with it when they have time.

• As to networking, we will host the Annual Meeting on a platform that supports one-on-one meetings, as well as ad hoc group sessions. While it’s hard to simulate those chance encounters (e.g., at the coffee bar) that happen at a live meeting, we will do our best to take advantage of our online platform’s capabilities so attendees can -- at least virtually -- rub shoulders and bump elbows with past, current and future clients, business partners, mentors and colleagues. • And last, but certainly not least, conviviality: We are planning a number of evening sessions for the annual meeting. These run the gamut from games to wine tastings. Evening sessions are still a work in progress, but I’m sure there will be something for everyone to enjoy. Expect to talk and laugh with both old and new friends in the LES community.” Register now and don’t miss Meeting Co-chair Karthika Perumal’s welcome video here: https://lesmeetings.org/am20/.

The Annual Meeting Committee 2020 gathered in Phoenix last October to organize for Philadelphia. Little did they know COVID-19 would disrupt everything!
