Why I

Kgn…

“Kingston for me is simply the darling of Jamaica. From the sheer beauty of the picturesque mountains to the shore of the Palisadoes this city is breathtaking. One cannot help but fall in love with the vibe and rhythm of the people, the hustle and bustle of the busy streets or the tranquility of a Hollywell get-away. While there is so much to see, do, taste and experience, one of my most enjoyable moments can be found shopping at coronation market early on a Saturday morning; the sights, the food, the language and the resourcefulness of the people is truly a microcosm of who we all are. One people! ”

Liberty Hall – sharing Garvey’s vision

…a National Monument… a Hero’s Vision for his people How often do you remember Jamaica’s first national hero Marcus Mosiah Garvey or how often do you stop to think of his journey and share the memories with others? Marcus Garvey’s life is still being celebrated at Liberty Hall in Kingston Jamaica each day. The heritage site is a historical ground where Garvey’s memory is kept alive and cherished; one visit there will expose individuals to the hero’s life and provide answers for burning questions about his past. On a recent visit, researcher and passionate Garveyite, Asheda Dyer shared the history and purpose of the grounds to help visitors understand where they were and why the site is important. Liberty Hall is a legacy of Marcus Garvey

and it was founded in 1923 as one of the Universal Negro Improvement Association’s (UNIA) headquarters. It was utilized for meetings, employment practices, entertainment and educational purposes or just a place where black people could gather and practice self building. When Marcus Garvey died in 1940 the building was lost, however it was purchased by the Jamaican government and was restored. Today Liberty Hall is a National monument and is still being used for entertainment, meetings and educational purposes. In addition, the heritage site consists of a Marcus Garvey Museum to share with visitors a piece of history and remind Jamaicans about their

first national hero and his work. Liberty Hall also has a Garvey Research and Reference library to provide deep research about the UNIA and the Garvey movement. Be sure to visit Liberty Hall. Vivacious and knowledgeable Asheda will give you a tour of the property and share Marcus Garvey’s documentary of his journey in establishing the UNIA across the world. It’s well worth it

!ingston" a different winter Chairman’s Corner by J AMES S AMUELS

!inter in Jamaica is very special. It conjures exotic and romantic living, in beautiful accommodations usually found on our north coast. But there is another winter, somewhat removed from the tranquility of the typical vacation. Kingston, the heartbeat of Jamaica. The entire landscape seems to change and it is not about better or worse. Simply different and beautiful. The temperature turns down to as low as the fifties, in the hills, which is now a large part of Kingston, and so a heavy shawl or a jacket is not out of place. You might need a car, assuming you are going to find some time to drive through the mountains. Better still, if you are a nature lover, take a long walk through one of our national parks. This is a

spectacular time for the mountain. Fauna and winter blooms; colours that pop. One must stop at The Gap. A view from Hollywell Park, Blue Mountain

It is certainly a different temperature in the city. There is an urgency in the air; a sense that everything is moving, from people to cars, to animals but not without purpose. The business of Christmas with its intoxicating humour, challenges us to divorce our minds from serious thought. Kingston is alive like no other time. It seems that the playwright leaves his best for this time so the theatres are in their

glory. There is always a season of dance, albeit a mini one. This means that getting your tickets early avoids a lot of disappointment. The National Gallery always mounts a great show.

Continued…A Different Winter Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Thai, Greek, Lebanese, Mexican and there is of course classical French. Some of us will argue that Jamaica cuisine has come of age. No better place than Kingston reflects this. Don’t be afraid to let your fingers do the talking: whether online or telephone. We talk about our culture and as a city, Kingston is rightly very proud of its cultural depth and diverse reflections. These holidays, take a look on the ‘in-side’. There are art galleries; The National Gallery has an excellent show on. There is the Institute of Jamaica and Garvey, but the gallery takes at least two hours.

An image of the renovated entrance to Hope Zoo

Hope Gardens. It is still worth the trip in order to have that moment of quiet reflection. I was very surprised to see that we have a Zoo again.

Of course we can’t say Kingston without nightlife. Night Clubs are a plenty with outstanding settings. Red Bones, Kgn8, Triple Century, Puls8, Tracks and Records, The Deck, Countryside are some of the popular places. Jamaica’s music is also going through yet another transition with new sounds of reggae. Listen to the new bandsRed Bones, Pulse8. Christmas is special I think, simply because it reminds us of the most precious aspects of our lives, family. With love and peace to all. A merry Christmas.

Editor’s Note –

Let’s get our houses in order The start of the winter tourist season is indeed an exciting time. Tourism entities would have by now done their refresh or are just putting on the final touches. In the same way that we “brush up” our physical environment let us polish our professionalism and our enhanced customer service skills so that we continue to sparkle as a destination. Let’s get our houses in order. TPDCo’s Product Quality department monitors standards within the tourism sector and here in the Kingston Metropolitan area, as we do all across our resorts, we

stand ready to assist in guiding our partners to the highest standards and best practices of the industry. In this edition meet Earl Richards CEO of the Airports Authority, get a peek into Triple Century located on Knutsford Boulevard, take a historical journey to Liberty Hall downtown Kingston and check out the upcoming happenings around town. The Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment (MTE) is taking steps to quantify the value of reggae in a real way and have turned up the heat on Reggae Month which will be celebrated in February a fitting time,

given the fact that the King of Reggae, Bob Marley was born in that month and that we need to increase the number of visitors to the Kingston Metropolitan Resort Area at that time. Share in all the other goodies tucked away in the pages of this ezine and remember to give us your feedback at kingstoncalling@tpdco.org I take this opportunity to wish all our readers a boonoonoonoos festive season. May your hearts and homes be filled with the love of Christ this Christmas.

February – Roots, Rocking, Reggae month & Kingston “tun up” Kingston is the birthplace of Reggae music and also one of Jamaica’s resorts. During February the city suffers traditionally from low occupancy levels, (30 – 40%). It is against that background that the Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment (MTE) has endorsed and will celebrate February as, “Reggae Month.” It is expected that over time this will increase the occupancy levels significantly.

Historically, February is celebrated as reggae month and the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JARIA) must be commended for their work over the past five years. According to Tafari Burns, Director of Entertainment in the MTE “the Ministry through JTB sponsors several events on the calendar but to extract maximum value it decided to speak to new and existing promoters and organizers in order to put together a calendar of activities that will attract international, regional and local patrons and to sell Kingston as the cultural centre and birthplace of reggae music”

Senior Director of Entertainment in the

MTE Gillian Wilkinson McDaniel believes that raising occupancy levels is also contingent on the availability of rooms. “With the Wyndham out, that is approximately 400 rooms there will be challenges with space in the coming year. We would like however to see more community based tourism. It is an opportunity for the MTE to develop the whole idea of the bread and breakfast stay. In the next three years we would like to see the same occupancy levels as on the north coast, that is around 8090%, we need the accommodation to support it.

It is also great that transportation from places

like Ocho Rios is not a problem and that will be made easier with the new highway.”

Mrs Wilkinson McDaniel underscored the benefits to be derived from the Reggae Music industry. She told Kingston Calling that “in 2012 the police issued some 22,165 permits for events across the island.

From a sample of only five large music

events an approximate value was put at Five Hundred and Sixty-Three Million Dollars ($563,000,000.00). Between January 1 and November 30 2013, 230 extensions were granted for small events in eight parishes, with a reported $156m direct spending in the communities hiring over 5000 persons temporarily. This is just a fraction of events held in 2012. In addition the copyright business is worth almost 4.5 – 5% of the GDP. These numbers tell us that there is great value in the industry.”

Over 60 weekly and special events are

planned for Kingston for February 2014. Be sure to tell your friends about it.
