Editor’s Desk For the last 8 years Canada is trying to diversify its trade which today is mostly US dependent. US is not the only Canada’s closest neighbour but it is the Canada’s biggest business partner as well. Perhaps both know that they cannot live and enjoy without each other.

Most Canadian companies, politicians and economists believe that even the old NAFTA was more favourable to United States and Mexico than Canada. Canadian Companies and Canadian government were sued many times under NAFTA. Most recently, U.S. has proposed a 219% duty on

Since President Donald Trump took office, the first good news came for Canada was a go ahead signal for Keystone XL pipeline. It gave a rebirth to Alberta’s oil sands and boosted province’s ailing economy. Jobs restarted surfacing and new businesses as usual.

Bombardier after it was targeted by Boeing blaming Canadian/Quebec government providing subsidies to Bombardier that helped Bombardier to sell its 125 CSeries jets at a lower price than Boeing to Delta Air. Bombardier had to handover 50.01% stake of its crown jewel Cseries to Airbus for free.

NAFTA talks are underway, 5 rounds of talks are completed with no light in the tunnel. Canadian team feels that US side is putting unacceptable demands and feel that the US team is acting like bullies twisting arms instead of behaving like next door negotiators.

With the above scenario in mind Canadian companies have no hope that the outcome would be favourable to Canadian exporters.

Bitcoin is not a coin as it sounds, but a code or a virtual token that can be freely transferred from one user to another through a secured network. Bitcoin is the most popular cryptocurrency. On November 29, 2017, Globally, the cryptocurrency surged to US $11,235.96 (C$ 14253.04) a record high. Bitcoin's rapid ascent has prompted warnings from a stream of prominent investors that it had reached bubble territory.

Rumors are that US government is thinking to launch a US Federal Reserves’ own coin called FedCoin. If that happens, it would be revolutionary because the other governments would follow US. At present all the governments are trying to end or heavily regulate the Cryptocurrency since it is helping money laundering.

A cryptocurrency is a digital or virtual currency that uses cryptography for security. A cryptocurrency is difficult to counterfeit because of this security feature. A defining feature of a cryptocurrency, and arguably its most endearing allure, is its organic nature; it is not issued by any central authority, rendering it theoretically immune to government interference or manipulation. Virtual currency can be converted for cash through online exchanges who act as brokers. Exchanges such as Coinbase and Bitstamp enable users to exchange their Bitcoins for their local currency. The Bitcoin holder makes a sell order like s/he would if making a trade with a securities broker. The sell order includes the number of Bitcoins and price per coin. The user’s account is credited in the

7

local currency when his/her order is matched to a corresponding buy order.

Convertible virtual currencies

can also be exchanged for real currency using Bitcoin ATMs which are only available in select countries. While the online exchanges may take a couple of days for the euro or dollar to be transferred to a user’s account, Bitcoin ATMs take only seconds to complete the transaction. A Bitcoin exchange was launched in June of 2011. Trade Hill Exchange offers Bitcoin trade support for a number of currencies including the Australian and Canadian dollars, the euro, Chilean peso and Indian rupee. The exchange allows for both limit and market orders, and charges commission fees for all trades placed through the exchange. Crypto-currency can be used as a substitute for

real and legally recognized currency. Convertible Virtual Currency usually has a measurable value in real money, but what makes it convertible lies in its ability to be exchangeable. Not all virtual currency can be exchanged for legal tender though, therefore, not all virtual currency is convertible.

Coinjoin keeps it secret. The investors fear that the information they are leaving when doing a transaction that someone on the other end knows the trail of transaction that could be dangerous. Coinjoin is an anonymization strategy that protects the privacy of Bitcoin users when they conduct transactions with each other. Coinjoin requires multiple parties to jointly sign on an agreement to mix their coins when engaging in separate Bitcoin transactions. The final word, Bitcoin is a fragile form of investment but when a share jumps over 1000% investors keep an eye on that. Bitcoin did go 40% down few months ago but again climbed to record high. “This week is no different,” says David Yermack, professor of finance and business at New York University. “Bitcoin has always been very volatileAnybody who invests should have a large amount of risk tolerance.”

US

MOVES EMBASSY TO

JERUSALEM BY ISSAC SHIFF

10

DECEMBER 06, 2017 would be recognized as a historic day because US President Donald Trump orders to move US embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv. Basically he has done so to fulfil one of his campaign promises and to prove that he is the closest friend of the people of Israel. Sources revealed that the whole thing was a brainchild of President’s son in law, Jared Kushner, who is handling the Middle East portfolio. Experts on the region are questioning how this act could bring peace in the Middle East.

POLITICIAN LE POLITICIEN Dec 17

US citizens have mixed reaction however, abroad; it gave a boost to Prime Minister Netanyahu’s troubled government in Israel. In strong words President Trump announced “It is time to officially recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel”. Soon after the president’s announcement, the US state department issued a press release saying, “President Trump‘s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital aligns U.S. presence with the reality that Jerusalem is home to Israel’s legislature, Supreme Court, President’s office, and Prime Minister‘s office.” Thomas Friedman, three time Pulitzer Prize winner reacted, “In nearly 30 years of covering United States foreign policy, I’ve never seen a president who gave so much to so many for so little.” He added, “Trump gave away one of the crown jewels of American foreign policy”. Israeli Settlements in the West Bank that exceeded 350,000 so far had been a key issue between

US and Israeli governments. US loves ‘two state solution’ that needs some settlements evacuated or given to Palestinians in order to properly problem-free divide. President calls his move to bring peace and stability in the Middle East but all Arab partners including Saudi Arabia did not react in favour. “The reality of all those years of construction, to which Netanyahu is now adding his significant share, has created a sense of urgency and of panic,” said Aaron David Miller, who advised six American secretaries of state on the Middle East. Answering some press questions on the reaction the State Department said, “We have consulted with many friends, partners, and allies in advance of the President making his decision. We firmly believe there is an opportunity for a lasting peace. As the President said in his remarks today, “Peace is never beyond the grasp of those willing to reach it.”

11

POLITICIAN LE POLITICIEN Dec 17

"We believe it's unhelpful," British Prime Minister Theresa May said after the announcement, adding that Trump has an obligation to "now bring forward detailed proposals for an Israel-Palestinian settlement." Democratic Sen. Diane Feinstein wrote in a letter to the President that the move would "spark violence, further alienate the United States and

undermine the prospects of a two-state solution." Majority in Israel are interested in peace and like to live with Palestinians side by side but politicians in Israel are making it difficult. At home Americans want peace they don’t want their tax dollars spent to solve problems of others instead they want a better economy, better jobs and better housing conditions. In an United Nation Security Council’s emergency meeting in New York. The ambassadors of France, Germany, Italy, Sweden and the U.K. issued a joint statement after the meeting reiterating their opposition to Trump’s move. “We disagree with

12

the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,” they said in the statement. “The status of Jerusalem must be determined through negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians leading to a final status agreement,” Statement said. Canada will not follow U.S. President Donald Trump's move to recognize Jerusalem as the

capital of Israel, nor will it be moving its embassy. Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said. ‘‘Canada is a steadfast ally and friend of Israel and friend to the Palestinian people”. “Canada’s longstanding position is that the status of Jerusalem can be resolved only as part of a general settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli dispute,” she added.

CHINA HEADING TOWARDS ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY ERA By Amir S. Ali

21

POLITICIAN LE POLITICIEN Dec 17

N

ot so long ago, hardly there was a day when China was not criticized by one country or another by one group or another on Chinese human rights violation record, quality of worker’s life record, currency devaluation issue or environmental issues. But now good news and comments surface about China frequently especially on Climate Change and Human Rights reforms. Is it because everyone wants to do business with China or the change in China is real? Most experts on China believe the change is ‘real’ In the beginning of this year China has cancelled plans to build 103 coal-fired power plants, 120 gigawatts of future coal-fired capacity and moving the country away from one of the dirtiest forms of electricity generation. The move was internationally admired that China is seriously trying to control its own smog problems and respecting the global cause to save environment. These plants were supposed to be erected in 13 provinces, mostly in China’s coal-rich north and west, on which construction had already begun. By doing this China will meet its goal of limiting its total coal-fired power generation capacity to 1,100 gigawatts by 2020. This month, December, Catherine McKenna, Canadian Minister of Environment and Climate Change visited China and met Chinese counterpart and said, “Canadian companies have expertise and solutions to offer. For example, hundreds of millions of Chinese citizens are served by Canadian ultraviolet water- and wastewatertreatment technology. Engaging with China on clean technology continues to be a priority, and the Government of Canada is supporting Canadian companies to make further inroads into the Chinese market.”

22

Catherine McKenna, Canadian Minister of Environment and Climate Change

McKenna took few companies with her namely, A.U.G. Signals, Biorem, Biothermica, Cypher Environmental, David Bromley Engineering, Echologics, GHGSat, Hi-Velocity Systems, NELSON Environmental Remediation, Pure Technologies, Quadrogen Power Systems, Saltworks, Shell Cansolv Technologies, Solstice Canada Corp. Terragon Environmental Technologies Inc. Xebec Adsorption Inc. Everyone of these companies sign contracts with local Chinese companies making both countries partners to develop or use fresh environmental technologies. On human rights issue, an EU delegation visited China and commented, “On 10 December the international community marks the anniversary of the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This Declaration, which all UN members including China have agreed to uphold, states that each and every one of us has the right to freedom of thought, freedom of religion and belief,

POLITICIAN LE POLITICIEN Dec 17

commitment by the Chinese authorities to ensure legal representation for greater numbers of criminal defendants, and we hope that the new system that will replace the Shuanggui System to ensure basic rights for all civil servants, including the right to legal representation. In the coming year, a core part of our engagement will include working with China to promote human rights under the Universal Declaration.” China has emerged as a unique super power that has positively connected the world to Beijing through business engagements,

freedom of expression and freedom of peaceful assembly and association.” The delegation further stated, “Here in Beijing, each of us continues to witness first-hand China’s success in improving the lives of its citizens. We witness, for example, the significant improvements in the Chinese people’s standard of living and in access to social services such as health and education. We also witness improvements in the sphere of some civil rights, such as a continuing effort to combat and prevent domestic violence. We welcome the

partnerships and road networks and has reached to the Arabian Sea through Pakistan what Russia could only dream and fought war in Afghanistan for. That has come through Chinese robust calculations, hard work and predicting future.

imbabwe’s 93 years old President Robert Mugabe resigned on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 as a result of military coup. He ended his 37 years of clinging on to the power act which

Dictators try to remain in power fearing death if their power is over. Many of them are super corrupt and the only way to hide their sins/money is to remain in power. Many commit suicide and many are removed by their own people in horrible

he began as a hero of the struggle against white’s rule and ended as the man blamed for reducing Zimbabwe to despotism and economic misery. After his resignation, British prime minister said Robert Mugabe's resignation on Tuesday gave Zimbabwe "an opportunity to forge a new path free of the oppression that characterised his rule". She added in a statement: "In recent days we have seen the desire of the Zimbabwean people for free and fair elections and the opportunity to rebuild the country's economy under a legitimate government. "As Zimbabwe's oldest friend we will do all we can to support this, working with our international and regional partners to help the country achieve a brighter future it so deserves."

28

examples like Muammar Gaddafi, murdered by his own people. Syrian example is the most recent and ongoing. Bashar Al-Asad took power as soon as his father died in 2000. From the day 1 he is facing an uprising of pro-democracy movements. He is trying to curb them or eliminate them to remain in power. So far, the brutal crackdown by his security forces could not stop the protests but eventually triggered an armed conflict that left more than 250,000 people dead and over 11 million displaced and turned refugees. It has been 17 years he is clinging at power and again he knows that as soon as he

POLITICIAN LE POLITICIEN Dec 17

steps down, his own people would assassinate him. Turkey is one step closer to dictatorship. Turkey’s parliament has signed off on a contentious constitutional reform package that would concentrate even more powers in the office of the president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and potentially extend his mandate till 2029. The reforms will come into effect if approved in a national referendum. Some dictators have complex that they are one of the chosen people, for example, one of the researchers on Adolf Hitler files said that it was, Hitler’s “growing paranoia”. By this, MacCurdy, the researcher meant the Nazi leader’s “Messiah complex”, in which he believed he was leading a chosen people on a crusade against an Evil incarnate in the Jews. He felt that this was starting to become a dominant tendency in Hitler’s mind. CIA studied many dictators including Russian leader, Nikita Khrushchev before his meeting with President J. F. Kennedy in Vienna in 1961. The CIA portrayed Khrushchev as “a crude peasant who liked to be unpredictable and two-faced.” By the way President Trump claims that he is unpredictable too. However, American democracy is so powerful that will not allow anyone to rule more than two terms at max. No one can gain power in US with the final exception of elections.

By nature, people like innovation and change. The Queen of England survived because she has given power to the people and kept monarchy as a symbol of continuity. British Royal family has changed a lot, for example, kissing in public was never allowed bin royals but the world witnessed Prince William kissed his bride Kate Napleton in public. Democratic values allow any deserving candidate to serve public in any capacity. Dictators and corrupt politicians don’t get it. They try to keep clinging to the power as long as they can or till they are forcefully removed, naturally die or killed.

CONCURRENT

DISORDERS (CD)

Addictions and Mental Health Programs in NS by Charmaine Gaudet

31

POLITICIAN LE POLITICIEN Dec 17

C

oncurrent disorders (CD) are complex conditions where a person has a mental health disorder in addition to a substance use disorder. In Nova Scotia, ‘Concurrent Disorders Core Competencies Toolkit’, program was launched in September, designed to provide addictions and mental health clinical staff a better understanding of CD. The staff was encouraged to get started on the training as soon as possible. “It’s free and painless,” says Kim Hiscock, one of the clinical nurse educators who provide education and support to staff working across addictions and mental health. “There’s no charge, staff can just log on and they don’t have to leave their unit to do it. It’s easy to use, the time required is minimal, and they can do it when it’s convenient for them. In addition to the modules, there’s a lot of information people can access just by clicking on the links.” Sandra Beumer another educator describes the toolkit as nine learning modules based on current best practices in mental health and addictions. Each module contains links that direct the learner to valuable tools and resources. “It’s one stop shopping for busy clinicians in need of accurate and timely information. With the toolkit, information is in one place, readily available and at their fingertips.” Despite the high prevalence of concurrent disorders, the approach to treatment has been inconsistent across the province, says Hiscock. “Historically, individuals wanting to access a mental health program have been told they need to have their substance abuse problem addressed first and vice versa. We know this is not best practice. The CD training modules are a really good starting point for providing staff with basic information on how to support people across our programs. It’s the type of resource clinicians have been asking for.” Staff can access the modules by

32

POLITICIAN LE POLITICIEN Dec 17

logging onto LMS where they can complete the content at their own pace. Training time per module ranges depending on the content. The modules can also be taken in any order.

“THE MODULES SUPPORT A VARIETY OF PERSONAL LEARNING STYLES,” SAYS BEUMER. “THE AUDITORY COMPONENT WILL APPEAL TO AUDITORY LEARNERS AND THE VISUAL COMPONENT TO VISUAL LEARNERS. 33

POLITICIAN LE POLITICIEN Dec 17

In addition, the modules are self-directed giving adult learners autonomy in their learning experience.” Both Hiscock and Beumer have taken the training modules themselves. “I was impressed by the depth of information contained in each module,” says Beumer. “The modules are a winwin; they enable learners to acquire new knowledge in a relatively short period with minimal disruption. They are a comprehensive resource for clinicians working in mental health and addictions,” she says, adding, “I wish this educational pportunity existed when I began my career in mental health over 20 years ago.” Beumer credits Derek Leduc for his work in developing the CD Toolkit and getting the project up and running. “It is evident as you complete each module that Derek has invested a tremendous amount of time and energy into this project. It’s an invaluable resource that will enhance staff knowledge and ultimately improve patient care.” Hiscock is confident that the CD Toolkit will make a positive difference for clinical staff and for clients. “I truly believe the toolkit will lead to improved care for individuals living with

34

concurrent disorders. The end result will be an increased understanding of how to best meet the needs of those with CD.” Derek Leduc (centre), health services manager (Concurrent Disorders) at Capital Health Addictions and Mental Health Program (CHAMHP), notes that this training is intended to be comprehensive, convenient and meaningful to all staff. “I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such talented colleagues across the province in the development of this training,” he says. Leduc is currently working with a provincial working group to develop advanced competencies for concurrent disorders and a training plan. He states “all of this work is part of our efforts to achieve the System Level Standards for Concurrent Disorders, which include a focus on improving organization and staff competencies across Nova Scotia.”

SHARAPOVA

NAMED IN A FRAUDULENT CASE IN INDIA. Maria Sharapova, a tennis superstar, a Canadian sweet heart and a personality who would never indulge in a case like she is facing today in India. Her clients had been nothing but top brands. Her own brand is respected around the word. But, in last November a bad news surfaced when she was named in a fraudulent case in India.

37

POLITICIAN LE POLITICIEN Dec 17

It

is a fact that tennis is wonderful game but it is a lonely game. In its purest form, it's a single person pitted against another. There are no teammates and few breaks. It's a mental and physical grind. For Sharapova, whose father worked odd jobs those first few years while she trained as a child, the solitude was compounded by having few peers around. Today she has a reputation among fellow players for being aloof. Perhaps that comes from always knowing what she wanted.

In an HBO "Real Sports" clip from around 2001 an interviewer asked young Sharapova: "If you had a choice between winning Wimbledon or making $20 million in endorsements, what would you choose?" She said, "I would want to win Wimbledon, because then the millions will come."

Sharapova has been seeing opportunities since she was the young teen who said she'd choose Wimbledon over riches. "The mindset that I carried as such a young girl has carried through my whole life," she says. "Not just tennis." A star with that kind of strong character would never commit a fraud and surely her name was used to make millions. In India, 6 feet 2 inch tall five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova is under investigation for cheating and criminal conspiracy after the failure of a luxury housing project that she endorsed, Indian police said.

38

POLITICIAN LE POLITICIEN Dec 17

The firm behind the development is alleged to have taken millions of dollars from homebuyers before the project folded. Investors are blaming her instead of the real culprits. "Any celebrity who endorses any product technically becomes an agent for that company. No one would have invested in the project if Sharapova's name was not there," said Piyush Singh, a lawyer representing the complainant. Sharapova, a former world No 1, made almost $30 million in 2015, according to Forbes magazine, with $23 million of that coming from endorsements. A star of that calibre and reputation

who could make millions with legitimate projects would never involve (knowingly) in such a deal like she is named in today. The developer is to blame. Poor Sharapova must have believed them that they would deliver what they are committing. Why on earth she knowingly would indulge in a fraud. She was surely been framed. It is an eye opener for other celebrities not to evolve in deals such as this one to save money as well as reputation.
