Live-work complex with House of Creativity in Brno-Udolni street when: February 2017 - May 2018 location: Brno-center, Udolni street, CZ type: diploma project supervisor: Ing. arch. Boháč Ivo

The diploma project that led to the design of a live-work complex with a “House of Creativity” started with a question: how to design a quality place? Studying various approaches of Gion Caminada, Kalkbreite and Spreefeld cooperative made me see socio-economic connections of built forms and that human interactions are far harder to visualize than solid structures. The main connecting space is an existing park under Spilberk castle turned into garden. The designed garden extends already refurbished Boromej gardens that are managed by Open Garden Association. They organize various events and workshops for citizens of Brno and tend to the garden. So the newly designed garden naturally connects at the existing one and offers more opportunities for citizen’s gardening tastes. Common spaces for citizens connect to the garden - common kitchen, common workshop and common living room. These spaces are meant for public use - every citizen can become a member and use these spaces. They offer sheltered spaces for citizens initiatives, thus strengthening individuals and communities. Common kitchen provides space for individuals that want to start their own food business, but don’t have the means of a kitchen that applies to industry standars. Common workshop is meant for like-minded peoply, only in the spectrum of electronics, woodworking, metalworking, 3d printing and such. Finally, common living room is the heart of the public spaces. It connects right to the garden and terrace, providing shelter and backrooms for the people working on the garden, is the meating place of the ensemble and garden and shows the work of people creating in the ensemble. The use of this space is free of charge and is open to all citizens. In the west end of the garden, kids have their own area with kindergarten building. Right next to it is a family center that provides spaces for mums and fathers to connect to other parents and to work while their kids play in the playroom visible to parents. The time has come that we need to turn from an employee to an entrepreneur - and House of Creativity caters to those needs. It hosts the common workshop on the first level. On higher levels there are offices for small and start-up companies, coworking space for freelancers, various conference rooms and neighbourhood spaces - incorporating a collaborative space, storage and meeting room. Plus on both ends of the building, there are rentable public rooms for citizen initiatives. Big multifunctional hall flows to the new square. In between the public garden and the Udolni street, three courtyards with semi-public access and 2 private courtyards extends. Around these courtyards are located appartments and cohousing clusters. Cohousing incorporates two shared courtyards. Finally the row of buildings on the Udolni street connects and closes the block, destroyed in the II. World War. There’s only one opening newly created square that extends Obilny square and connects through a pathway to the Spilberk castle. On the ground level there are spaces for stores, offices and gastronomy offered, creating a livable street floor.

Residential Complex in Brno-Komín when: February - May 2015 location: Brno-Komín, CZ type: bachelor project supervisor: Ing. arch. Boháč Ivo The topic for bachelor project 2015 was to create a residential complex in one of Brno’s neighbourhouds. The assignment didn’t estabilish any specific limitations to comply which could end up being tricky. The original function of the parcel was private gardens surrounded by attached and single family houses. The only access to the parcel was from east using narrow road. The main theme of this project is cohousing - trying to create a livable place in today’s fast paced economy where people can work, study, live, talk and know people living around them. Project proposes single family houses with special multifunctional room to be used as a workplace for small businesses, other house-unit for multigeneration families or studio and extra space. Every house has its own private garden. The heart of the project lies on common spaces and shared exterior areas for the neighbourhood - you can find common house in the entering area, semi-private courtyard in the middle of the parcel between houses and on top of the parcel - landmark of the area - elliptic picnic building with exterior fireplace. The area of the picnic building is meant to be used not only by the neighbourhood but by visitors as well for the parcel lies at an edge of city’s recreation area.

Entrace Object to Kunstat Castle when: September - December 2013 location: Kunštát Castle, CZ type: semestral design project, contemporary architecture in castle areas supervisor: doc. Ing. arch. Hrabec Josef, CSc. The goal was to create a new entrance with facilities to Kunštát Castle that lies on top of a hill. An original assigned site, that the castle’s managers proposed, wasn’t good enough for the new object to fit in so a new place at the head of the hill was chosen instead. It is placed on a mirror line of the castle, as the castle is symmetrical. That way it doesn’t mess up the facade of the building and the majestic vibe that the castle gives off is preserved. One of the hard “musts” was to create a representative object in such a way so that it wouldn’t influence badly the exterior of the old castle and create a harmonious athmosphere. New facilities with tourist lobby, café and outside terrace is placed under the terrain on the top of the hill. The access is through the new staircase on the hill and the original entering pathway. The castle with the entrance objects creates a great landmark that is able to be seen from afar.

Water Pathway when: February - May 2013 location: Karlovice, CZ type: semestral design project, working in a team, urban & building planning teamed with: Lukáš Ildža, Jitka Zelenková supervisor: Ing. arch. Foretník Jan, Ph.D. renderings: Lukáš Ildža

Little city Karlovice lies in the Jeseniky mountains near the border with Poland. The project is trying to create a new city center, which the city lacks, in a village-like way. The main concept is based on water features - using a city creek that runs right under a modest hill where a church is placed on top. This is the place of the new center where new terrace-like pathway goes up the hill and connects the church. Near this new center there is an old devastated mill that the project suggests to renovate and places there a new tourist center, gallery and artist atelier. The final project was a team work, each of us contributed with designing a part of the project, while all of us cooperated on the main concept. My task was to design a renovation and new functions for the old mill. Then I modeled the mill up in Archicad and 3dsMax. The final renderings were Lukas Ildza’s job.

Vítkovice Gasholder when: February - May 2012 location: Ostrava, CZ type: semestral design project, residential reconversion of abandoned buildings supervisor: Prof. Ing. arch. Helena Zemánková, CSc. As my home city where I grew up is Ostrava, I needed to design a building there. The aim of this project was refurbishment and finding new functions for abandoned places. Ostrava is a city with long industrial history. Industry played a primary role in city’s life. Mines, blast furnaces, coking plants and other technological facilities of metallurgical and heavy machinery basis industry and energetics. Blast furnaces creates Ostrava’s typical skyline and together with the Hlubina mine and an original area of a coking plant have been established National Cultural Monumet and inscribed on the European Cultural Heritage List. The area is slowly changing its function to new university, research, development and cultural facility. As it’s close to the city downtown, it is planned for it to be connected to the downtown and act as a stretched city downtown. I picked up one of the objects - original gasholder and designed new apartments and offices for its new function. Since in a place with great potential, apartments have a high standard and even smaller apartments have large floorplan areas. Offices and apartments are raised above ground level, where a cafe restaurant is placed. The first levels are occupied by the offices, as the original envelope of the gasholder is preserved there and has a solid form. Between the original envelope and new inscribed circular construction, there is a yard that provides offices with natural light. In the higher levels, there are various forms of apartments. These days the gasholder has been reconverted into a concert hall by architect Pleskot and the area is a new busy cultural space of the city.

From 3D Designing to Physical Modeling when: February - May 2013 type: design project supervisor: Ing. arch. Jan Kratochvíl, MgA. Jan Šebánek

In the project, we were faced with this issue - create an organic-like structure, which means blob-like, ribbon-like or liquid-like. The aim of the lectures was to adopt the ability of finding new inspiration without any constraints and then how to apply this process to architecture. Each student had to design three different organic-like shapes - buildings. We had to bring it into life in a 3D computer program. The best of the three proposals was chosen to be actually build as a model - or better - as an actual sculpture. We were reminded that the sculpture has to be intriguing from every viewing direction. Then we were faced with the physical world of building such a sculpture. My final model uses thin metal plates forming a dancing-like or whirl-like shape.

Chapel Interior when: spring 2015 location: Tisová, CZ type: private project, study of the interior of a chapel for the village Tisová

This project involves interior study of the chapel in village Tisová. The main initiative was reconstruction of chapel benches. The study proposes color design for reconstructed benches as well as color proposal of the pipe organ and the banister in chapel’s choir loft. Outputs for this project were visualisations of interior and close-ups of benches. It was then used for the reconstruction of the benches. A reconstruction of choir loft may come in the future. I was the only one working on the project.
