ACTIVATION

LVA has been a place of recreation and entertainment since its inception and so it should be today. Partly LVA buildings are used for various cultural events - concerts (Lednice), educational programs (Pohansko), exhibitions (Valtice). The most frequent use is for tours of the interior but only seasonally. In order to meet the site’s potential, it would be appropriate to use all the buildings in one joint program to support current events and complement them with other functions.

MILL ART CENTER

Based on analyzes I propose to use the chateau complex in Breclav as a cultural and recreational center with an overlap to LVA. Breclav would thus complete a triangle with other centers in Lednice and Valtice. The cultural center in Breclav could therefore finally fulfill its potential as the gateway to the LVA. The chateau complex would serve as a recreational and cultural center for local residents as well as visitors who are passing through Breclav. It is also appropriate to promote the region’s traditions and values, such as agricultural production and folklore. At the same time, the site should meet the demands of local people. Breclav is a city with a very favorable geographic location and has the potential to develop further, if people will want to live here.

CONCEPT

The perception of an interior space is very individual; everything is in our mind and it influenced by a variety of stimulations. However the inner space made from timber is easily definable. One of the most important requirements is roofing of the space. Not roofing as a saddle roof, but something what surrounds us and what gives us the feeling of shelter. A typical example is forest. If you enter the forest, you perceive roofing in terms of branches and crowns of trees, it is a space that absorbs us, and therefore we perceive it as an interior space. Wood associates tree and tree associates forest. Forest and trees could be seen as something alive what is constantly evolving. However timber in the form of a construction element, whether battens, rafters, or just felled tree trunks, cannot be seen as a living organism. We have to treat it as something inanimate, what ever since the felled of the tree, spontaneously perishable.

Nature of wood can be first traced at wooden shelters, abodes and later on the use of wood in construction. At first it began to appear in dwellings constructed of wooden chunk, propped against a tree. This is how a tepee had been evolved. This development is still based on the principle of interlocking timbers together in the shape of the letter A, which later had been converted to the form of the roof, as we know it today. Timber wants to be a roof that can create a shelter for anything or anyone.

KONCEPT

The bridge of this project is considered to be a destination. People are the main aspect of this project. The bridge should make people stay on the bridge, not just cross it. The main idea is that the bridge acts as an intervention in its surroundings. The design’s intention is to redirect people’s attention. It should make people stop on the bridge and watch the artisans, watch the flow of the river Seine, watch Paris. The form comes out of the basic triangle shape that extends towards the island, towards people. On the opposite side it is narrowing towards to the traffic. The tunnel is the same from all three sides; there is a concrete deck in the middle. The deck is curved to evoke the old arch bridge and to avoid the edge - where the triangle is rotated upside down. The beams are all straight and in regular distances. However with the rotation they assume different lengths and different angles. They form gaps between the grid on each side, there being three gaps, two of them covered. The beams widen and provide covered heated spaces – exhibition area and workshops. There are two materials used in contrast with the connection to the site. The structure is from steel, painted white; also the wider beams have the same surface, so the passage from exterior into interior is fluent. “Satisfying our eyes through geometry, our minds through mathematics.” Le Corbusier
