“The gusting wind blew restlessly, strong in one direction, then in another. We were dying in the Mediterranean Sea. It was not easy to drown. The first time my head bobbed beneath the waves I wasn’t worried. I was a swimmer. After only thirty seconds I was sinking again. My legs were tired and struggling to bring me back toward the sun speckled surface. I could hear desperation, all around me. My hair rose like seaweed upwards, rippling in the currents. Darkness engulfed me. The sea became our grave on the 26th of May, 2016… Amid the Mediterranean Sea lies a network of floating pods, containing the reminiscences of the refugees who did not make their trip across the ocean. The pods drift along the ocean currents. Upon arriving near shore, they are tethered and would pause for a few days allowing to be visited by people. The visitors arrive and enter this drifting cemetery on boats. As they proceed, they diverge to find their own connections of both collective and intimate memories of the loss. Large memorial capsules contain suspended empty pods with the identification number of the deceased, commemorating the lost and the missing from shipwrecks. The intimate memory is composed of individual capsules containing the found bodies of the deceased. The tenth island creates a linkage of memory between the living and the dead.

A narrative map that documents the deadly journey of immigrants across the Mediterranean Sea into Italy. This layered drawing combines maps of refuge routes in the sea with fragments of personal narratives, showing the difficulty, complexity and dangers of this passage. Titled the Storm, or ‘La Tempesta’ in Italian, this drawing reflects that idea that an environmental storm could be seen as a natural but also social phenomenon.


More than 4000 people have died or gone missing at sea trying to reach Europe over the past 15 months, and the number continues to increase. With unstable transit conditions and uncertain identity, it is often difficult for these passing refugees to be buried and commemorated with [dignity].


Drifting Cemetery

The island addresses this by finding refuge capsules for the corpses amid the ocean, within proximity of where these incidents would have taken place. On the other hand, these secured pods also pays respect to the refugees’ Muslim tradition by directly burying their bodies with soil “from their homeland.” The “island” is tethered temporarily. From time to time, the capsules drift across the ocean as a group, visiting countries where the refugees originated.

[architecture] An observatory is designed on the Chain of Rocks Bridge in St. Louis. Constructed in 1929 and currently carrying pedestrian traffic, the bridge has an intriguing view of the Mississippi River, which has a tranquil ambience. Inspired by sensory contact of hands in water and underwater flickering light, the observatory is designed to capture the amorphous rhythm of water, transforming it to multi-sensory interaction with visitors.


INITIAL STUDY

The drawings illustrate the poetics of the sensational feelings when a hand interacts with water, emphasizing the viscosity and tactile quality of water.

The project is sited on the Chain of Rocks Bridge, which spans the Mississippi River on the north edge of St. Louis, Missouri. The architectural intervention is an observatory for environmental effects. It challenges the human behaviors of dwelling in an architectural space.

The model simulates surface tension. The hand can ‘feel water’ in different ways shown by the processes. In this first model, the system constructed with strings and beads introduces a way of visualizing water as strata, allowing the disruption be analyzed.

The model explores a possibility that the strata be uneven and subject to change. Adding this component focuses less on analyzing the interaction. The final model is a matrix constructed with four planar strata while conceptually the strata is infinite. The grid quality creates a metric system for the deflection caused by interaction to be analyzed.

THE SUBMERGED Observatory for Environmental Effects Seeking to achieve an underwater effect, vertical apertures are created on each level, connecting floor to floor. Bigger ones connects two floors and smaller ones connect from top floor to bottom floor so that more intimate spaces are emphasized through long and narrow apertures. These void spaces allow light to come through as well as encourage sensory interactions by visitors.

AMBIENCE OF TRANQUILIT Y Sensational Experience Ultimately, the observatory is designed to be a space where sensation of water becomes the primary. The tranquil ambience of the space invites people to walk into the portals between stories and to experience virtually being submerged in water.

[architecture] This studio focuses on light through a series of sequential projects revolving around the design of a chapel for the nearby DeMun neighborhood in the suburban community of Clayton, Missouri. The project rests on the combination of spatial and symbolic qualities of light. By engaging concepts of spirituality within this program, I study and investigate light as texture, material, and spatial construct; scale, relative to the human body, site as a generative ground for intervention, and enclosure, through an articulation of structural and material thicknesses and thresholds that mediate interiority and exteriority, lightness and darkness, public and private space.

The focus of the site study is on the voids created by space in between the trees. A site mapping is drawn by a series of sectional cuts with line segments making the location and dimension of trees on site.

The final design of the urban chapel consists of an entrance from under the ground, an ascending transitional procession that leads to the open congregational space, and a path to the functional space on the lower level.

In the final design, the concept of the void performs as a guiding force throughout the building. Visitors: / approach the chapel with descending terrain, / enter the building through the ascending void in a ‘floating space,’ and / arrive the main congregational area with seatings carved out from the ceiling as if they are afloat. With the studio sited at the Elephant Rocks State Park, a geological site with Precambrian rocks that has been exploited by quarries the landscape ghosts - over the past hundred years, students are asked to initially explore the intertwined relationships between these elements spanning over a million years - geological, industrial, social, and ecological - through group research, site analysis and speculative proposal. The architectural proposal includes a site-specific intervention that responds to the themes identified and unpacked through the initial research & analysis phase, especially echoing the theme of space & time. In this case, a residence for a single astronomer.

The relief map/model explores viewing relationships on the site through folding, layering and drafting. This exploration projects programing proposals such as an astronautic observatory and residences for astronomers.


A STRONOMER’S RESIDENCE


C O M P R E S S I O N O F S PA C E / T I M E This study model investigates the concept of multiplicity. By constructing mirrors reflecting respective views, the viewer experience the compression of space and time to a point. The action of looking through a threshold/portal also resonates with the practice of an astronomer.

P R OJ E C T E D S PAC E The final proposal comes to a series of vertical partition walls along with propped-up reflective surfaces that project specific site conditions. This space blurs the boundary of interior and exterior space by responding to the effects collected from the site and bring them inside the residence.

[landscape] Ecological urbanism is a productive approach to city development that emphasizes environmental systems both as structuring mechanisms for urban forms, and as environmental, social and economic resources. This project explores an environmental design practice that focuses on the expansion of social and environmental justice through the development of interventions in the North Saint Louis Harlem watershed. Stormwater management in urban landscapes is critical in today’s design realm. Impervious surfaces that prevent the infiltration of surface water continue to have significant negative effects on people’s lives and the environment. Nowhere is this more evident than in the North Saint Louis Harlem watershed where an inadequate combined stormwater and sewage system has been flooding roads and basements with polluted water since the 1920s. This, coupled with the destructive power of deindustrialization, shifts in demographics, economic hardship and longterm underinvestment, has brought distress to this once thriving neighborhood. Through rigorous analysis and engagement with the local community, a site specific, environmentally just proposal provides the opportunity to redefine the social qualities of the neighborhood. By strategic planting on the site, stormwater runoff is managed to alleviate pressure from the sewer system while providing much-needed green space and accommodating social gathering. Furthermore, the collaboration exemplifies student and professional relations for similar projects to follow. Finally, by addressing the urban stormwater issue in a predominantly African American community, we as designers, are providing the benefits of designed landscapes to an underserved population.

LONG TERM DEVELOPMENT AND COLLABORATION

The project initially engages the community through the funeral service program. The upper portion of the site is able to be used as outdoor funeral ceremonial space. The vacant house is converted to a pavilion for shelter. The planting on this portion of the site is programed with the funeral service – the trees by families to memorialize the deceased, the butterfly plants by seeds embedded in confetti. The parking lot scoring and planting allow members of all age in the neighborhood to participate. Over time, the poplar tree stakes thrive and provide shading for the cars. As the site draws more attention form the community, the use is subject to change. Community events take place here spontaneously. As the asphalt parking lot breaks up over the years, it gradually becomes a lively, safe, open space for community to hang out. The project is simple yet powerful, and could be harnessed at many similar sites within and beyond the boundaries of the watershed, potentially forming a green corridor that serves to manage urban storm water runoff and connect habitat patches.
