Goal: Your assignment is to redesign the Google interface. Currently, when you go to Google’s main screen and all of its consecutive screens, you are confronted with a clean, stripped-down, verbal-based screen; your challenge is to create one that is more graphical in nature, and reflects the actions in which the user is engaged. Pay particular attention to the section in the NY Times, article that discusses “special commands,” such as AND OR and NOT. Try to come up with a visual system that allows users to evoke these commands though elements that can be recognized at a glance. Think about ways in which you and those you know use the Google search engine. Is there a particular feature that you feel could be more user friendly? Is there a target audience for which you would like to design? If so, then please define the audience in your initial sketches.

OVERVIEW

Initial Home Screen: My idea for the Google redesign was intended for use by students. As you can see in the first sketch of the Home Screen, it is the logo surrounded by a circle of 12 links: Search, Gmail, Picasa, YouTube, News, Translate, Earth, Scholar, Voice, Maps, Documents, and Images. Underneath the logo is a search box. The icons will be black and white, but when you hover over them they will become their normal color.

Initial Search Screen: I wanted to utilize tags or keywords for my searches. Thus, I came up with the tag cloud concept. I have a tag cloud that is generated below the search bar, displaying popular tags that are also associated with the user input. These tags can be dragged and dropped between the tag cloud, Include, and Exclude boxes in order to filter results. The Include and Exclude boxes will extend as more tags are filled in. The results filter instantly whenever something is done. You can further filter by Images, YouTube, Maps, or Scholar located on the top.

Sketches

Home Screen: A few changes occurred during this process, as expected. I felt like having twelve icons was a little overwhelming. Thus, I removed two: Voice and Earth. I realized that Voice is normally use in conjunction with Gmail, and not many people seem to use Earth. The icons also became more spread out to make it easier on the eyes. Additionally, I added a “more... link beneath the logo to take to user to a list of all applications, which can normally be found on the top bar of the current Google page.

Search Screen: I had also been debating about being able to hide the Tag Cloud (and Include and Exclude boxes). Since the goal of the assignment was to incorporate AND, OR, and NOT, I felt that leaving it visible would be fine. I made it more discernable by adding a background behind the tag cloud area. Initially, on the top toolbar, I had intended it to be merely Images, Youtube, Maps, and and Scholar. However, if one clicks on say, Images, to filter, he or she would not have been able to return to the initial search results. Thus, I added in the Search icon at the front in order to be able to return. The Google logo itself will take the user back to the home page (or Home Screen). The toolbar filters also became black and white, but colored when activated, similar to the Home Screen.
