João de Arade, a fortress going back to the 15th century, used as a watchtower to defend the population against pirates and corsairs. During the 17th / 18th century it was extended as part of the line of fortresses protecting the estuary. It is now private property. Ferragudo has a wide choice of shops, pubs and quaint traditional village shops. The restaurants are second to none with fresh fish delivered daily into the small fishing dock, ready to be placed directly on the charcoal grill.
