Holiday events in Florida worth the drive By Mandy Carter It's that time of year again; holiday celebrations are taking place across Florida. While known for year-round warmth, the Sunshine State has tons of attractions to get your entire family into the winter holiday spirit. Here are my top four events that are worth the road trip.

ICE at Gaylord Palms

For the most frigid attraction in Florida, take a drive to Gaylord Palms Resort in Orlando for ICE!, the awardwinning display of millions of pounds of ice hand-carved into amazing sculptures by artisans from China. This year, the all-new theme, The Polar Express, will take your family on a journey of imagination on a magical adventure to the North Pole. The resort also offers indoor snow tubing and snowball fights plus a character meal with Elf on the Shelf! tickets.gaylordpalms.com

Disney World

Santa's Enchanted Forest

The world's largest holiday theme park is a suitable spot to experience Christmas magic and adventure. With a combination of more than 100 carnival attractions, from rollercoasters to a petting zoo, and light-decked holiday displays, including South Florida's tallest Christmas tree, your family will be immersed in seasonal cheer. santasenchantedforest.com

Surfing Santas in Cocoa Beach

Surfing Santas is an annual Cocoa Beach Christmas Eve tradition that now brings hundreds of surfers of all ages dressed up as Santa. The costumes are diverse, fun, and often tropical! It is fun to watch them ride in on the waves. If you are looking for a fun and unique way to spend your holiday beach-side, then you will love this free event that benefits local charities. Whether you surf or you're looking to join in the holiday spirit, there's no other beach having this much fun on Christmas Eve! surfingsantas.org

All Disney theme parks are magical this time of year. But on select nights at the Magic Kingdom, the Walt Disney World Resort brings extra holiday cheer with Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party. Spectacular decorations, Christmas parade with characters, and an appearance by Santa Claus himself! There's also a special Christmas fireworks show, complimentary cookies and hot chocolate, and even wintry snowfall on Main Street. disneyworld.disney.go.com/events/mickeys-very-merry-christmas-party EXTRA SPOT TO VISIT: While you are in Orlando, drive 25 miles east to a town named "Christmas." The city has an old spirit. It is worth the drive to send out a letter from its famous post office with the postmark of yes, "Christmas, Florida."

How to have a healthy holiday You probably won’t be humming “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year ” when stuck behind a line of shoppers, drivers or post-office patrons. And you might feel an extra tinge of irritability when finishing that work project before holiday vacations or going home to clean the house before the in-laws visit. You’re going to get stressed this time of year. And it’s OK. Most of us are all in the same boat, says a Healthline survey. Some common holiday stressors include overspending worries, dealing with difficult family members, lack of time to get everything done, commercialism or hype, and travel woes, according to the American Psychological Association.

Color your plate

Add nutrition and vibrant color to your holiday spread with cranberries, pomegranates, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, turnips, Swiss chard, grapes, pumpkin, citrus fruits, apples, and pears. Aim to fill half your plate. Eat the rainbow. But holiday stress goes beyond food. Here are some other quick tips to help keep you calm over the next two months:

Be real about it

Let’s face it, no Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, or other holiday celebration is perfect. An overcooked turkey, a toppled Christmas tree, a last-minute dinner cancellation; try to see these challenges as a chance to “go with the flow.” Life is not a Hallmark movie. Who knows? You might even create a cherished holiday memory.

Holiday stress causes unhealthy habits

To cope with all that stress, we often develop unhealthy habits. The most common coping mechanism is snacking. In another study, 74 percent of people said snacks get them through the holidays, with another 60 percent saying they felt guilty about it – another stressor. Then there’s all those social events and gatherings centered on food, which encourage us to eat and drink more -- and exercise less. Erika Graziani, a registered dietitian with Lee Health, says it’s no wonder many of us struggle to button our pants after the holidays. Even when we commit to controlling our eating it’s easy to stray when well-meaning friends and relatives say things like, “Come on -is that all you’re having? You’ve got plenty of room left on your plate!” So as the holiday season looms – with its infinite amount of decorative cookies and comforting carbs – here are a few things you can do to battle those food temptations:

Just say no to peer pressure

Erika says it’s understandable why we often fail to honor our dieting pledges. “So often peer pressure can lead us to ‘fall off the wagon,’” she says. “Don’t be afraid to say no. Remember, you’re entitled to do what feels good for you. It’s your health. It’s your body. Try not to feel like you need to please people.”

Avoid foods you don’t have control over

“If eating a small amount of a certain food will lead to binging and over-consumption, then leave it alone,” says Erika, who is also the Outpatient Nutrition Program coordinator with Lee Health Solutions. “Try to be mindful of not overeating foods that are fried or fatty meats and maybe stay away from skins of chicken or turkey, sugary items, foods made with butter, cream, cheese, and egg yolks and processed foods.”

Stay within your bank account

Ease the stress over spending by letting your family know ahead of time what your budget is, along with the reminder that the holidays are about time together, not costly gifts. Advocate drawing names so family members are only responsible for one gift each. Have an artistic streak? Try a handmade gift or card instead of the latest expensive gadget. That will help stress the meaning of the season.

Handle tense situations with a game plan

We’ve all endured those uncomfortable gatherings that involve family members who test our better natures. You know it’s going to happen, more than likely. Have a game plan ahead of time you can refer to. The key is to focus on making fond memories. Plan activities that foster fun and laughter such as playing a favorite family game or looking through old photo albums. And learn to walk away if things get tense.

Take time for yourself

No, you don’t have to please everyone. During a hectic holiday season, selfcare is the best thing you can do — others will benefit when you’re feeling less stressed. Go for a long walk, get a massage, listen to your favorite music, read a new book, or give yourself a holiday project that only you know about. All of us need some time to recharge. Be mindful and focus on the present rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Courtesy of Lee Health Family News

Free autism screening for young children Dec. 6 Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on Friday, Dec. 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Miromar Outlets, 10801 Road, Estero. It is estimated that one in every 68 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder,

making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. A physician referral is not required. Appointments are not necessary, but parents are encouraged to call 239-343-6838 to schedule or obtain more information.

Lee Health launches tool to help patients avoid the wait

When you’re sick, waiting to see a doctor is the last thing you want to do. At Lee Health, we understand, which is why we’re proud to announce a new tool to help patients get the care they need without the wait. “On My Way” is a new feature within My Chart on the Lee Health app that allows patients to check wait times, make an appointment and secure a place in line at certain urgent care clinics, all from the comfort of home. The feature is currently available at the Lee Convenient Care locations at 1682 NE Pine Island Road in Cape Coral and at 4771 S. Cleveland Ave., Fort Myers (near Page Field) with plans to expand to all four clinics in coming months. “On My Way is a helpful tool for patients with minor sicknesses and injuries, especially those with busy lives who might otherwise struggle to find time to wait at a doctor’s office,” said Kris Fay, Chief Administrative Officer of Lee Physician Group, Home Health and Physician Services. “This new feature is one of several programs that uses Family News

technology to help patients receive care at a time and place that conveniently fits into their schedules.” Lee Convenient Care offers quality, walk-in medical care for adults and children in a cost-effective, comfortable environment. While urgent care clinics typically function on a first-come-firstserved basis, On My Way allows patients to mark their place in line, minimizing their time in the waiting room. In addition to using technology to improve the experience while waiting at a doctor’s office, Lee Health recently launched Lee TeleHealth (LeeTeleHealth.org), which allows patients to use the camera on their phone, tablet or computer to see a physician with the push of a button. This is a great alternative for busy parents and professionals to receive a diagnosis and prescription for a variety of common ailments and injuries without leaving their home or office. Movies on the big screen Frozen 2

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Why was Elsa born with magical powers? The answer is calling her and threatening her kingdom. Together with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven, she'll set out on a dangerous but remarkable journey. In Frozen, Elsa feared her powers were too much for the world. In Frozen 2, she must hope they are enough. From the Academy Award-winning team— directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, producer Peter Del Vecho and songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez—and featuring the voices of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad.

Tom Hanks portrays Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, a timely story of kindness triumphing over cynicism, based on the true story of a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod. After a jaded magazine writer (Emmy winner Matthew Rhys) is assigned a profile of Fred Rogers, he overcomes his skepticism, learning about kindness, love and forgiveness from America’s most beloved neighbor.
