Trafford. Brian McClennan’s side made history by winning the trophy for a third
successive year with an 18-10 scoreline. Tries from Matt Diskin and Lee Smith combined with goals from man of the match Kevin Sinfield aided the victory, not to mention Rob Burrow’s drop goal late on that put the match beyond the opposition. Find the full match report inside…
...While Met Rugby Union 2nd’s Stumble Against Strong Uni 1st’s A gallant Leeds Met second team succumbed to a stronger and more disciplined Leeds University squad in the Leeds Varsity headline event. The opening pace of the game was frenetic, and Leeds Met seemed over-anxious to get their names on the score sheet. By contrast, Leeds University were content to play a waiting
game and develop their possession. The result was a great expenditure of effort from a Leeds Met side which looked increasingly desperate as the first half progressed. In the second half Leeds Met recovered their poise and began to play more coherent and rational rugby. But the initiative remained with Leeds University,
and as so often happens in sport, the fairytale ending failed to materialise in what was a entertaining climax to a great Leeds Varsity. A crowd of over 7,000 made this match one to remember with constant banter and chanting, making for a great atmosphere. Final score: Leeds Met 7, Leeds University 26.
