We love wool At Leeds Industrial Museum we love British wool. We want to celebrate this fantastic fabric, but we need your help. We’re looking for local schools and groups to help us make 2012 a fleece-tastic year. Join our Flock: We want a museum full of sheep! But don’t worry, pompom sheep not real ones. Can you help? We’d like schools and groups to get involved and make pompoms which we’ll turn into lifesized sheep to be displayed at Armley Mills Museum. Become West Yorkshire’s next fashion icon: Could you design, make and then model your own outfit? We’re looking for local secondary schools to rise to this fashion challenge using British wool. A fashion show to display your creations will be held during the summer term. It’s free to take part in both these wonderful wool projects, but places and resources are limited; please contact us soon if you’d like to take part.

New Bodyline membership packages offer great savings With more people taking a long-term approach to their health and fitness, we’ve revised our Bodyline membership packages; from January 2012 we’re introducing a new 12-month contract. This means you now have even more choice when it comes to paying for your Bodyline membership. A 12-month contract offers excellent value – save up to £3 a month on individual memberships and up to £6 a month on joint ones. Over a year these savings mean you’ll get 12 months for the price of 11 compared to paying monthly without a contract. Bodyline membership packages are designed to offer you as much flexibility as possible. As well as the new 12-month contract, we still offer month-by-month or annual payment options which cost the same as they did last year.

A major makeover due for Middleton
It’s an exciting time at Middleton leisure centre; a major refurbishment is about to get underway. In April 2012 the centre will temporarily close while we improve facilities for the local community. Work includes: • replacing the current outdoor pitch with a brandnew 3G all-weather pitch; • building a multi-use games area which will be free to use; • making the current bar area into a community club room; • building two referees’ changing rooms; • refurbishing eight internal changing rooms; • creating a Changing Places standard disabled changing room; • upgrading six outdoor pitches; • creating a new access route to the playing fields via the rugby club; • resurfacing the car park and creating disabled bays; and • creating a new entrance and reception area (subject to funding from Sport England). The centre is due to reopen in autumn 2012. Until then you can make the most of the facilities at other near-by leisure centres; John Charles Centre for Sport, Morley and Rothwell. LeedsCard offer: Don’t forget, your LeedsCard offers you fantastic savings on a huge variety of sports at council leisure centres.

Seems like Olympic team spirit
With the London 2012 Paralympic Games later this year, the profile of disability sport is set to rise. We caught up with wheelchair basketball player and Leeds City Council coach, Nick Smith, to find out about life as a disabled athlete and coach in Leeds…
If you’re someone who’s always organising matches, leagues and tournaments why not sign up to become a Sport Maker and help build the Olympic legacy? As a Sport Maker you’ll encourage friends, family and work colleagues to try out new sports, lend a hand at a local club and support charity sports events. Sign up to a Sport Maker workshop near you and get a free Addidas sports bag and tee-shirt. You’ll also get useful tips on how to create your own events, and find out how you can meet sporting personalities and local Olympic hopefuls by volunteering.
On the Sport Maker website you’ll find information about workshops and other Sport Maker projects in your area. To get involved, learn more and sign up visit www.sportmakers.co.uk Alternatively, contact Grant Soames, email firstname.lastname@example.org
Disability Sport in Leeds Having started playing wheelchair basketball aged six, and inspired by his idol Michael Jordan, Nick has gone on to play for the successful Leeds Spiders team. He was highly commended at the 2009 Leeds Sport Awards. Nick’s success hasn’t come about by accident, his week is jam-packed with sporting activity, “I play basketball twice a week at Morley. Then there’s tennis at John Charles Centre for Sport on Fridays, wheelchair racing on Thursday evenings, then gym and swim training at Pudsey” he tells us. He now also coaches young people and adults in sport, something he finds incredibly rewarding “I like helping people progress and passing on my knowledge, especially to disabled athletes as I can identify with them.” “There’s a huge programme of sporting activities for disabled people in Leeds” he tells us, “I encourage anyone who’s disabled to check out the programme at www.leeds.gov.uk/disabilitysport and have a go at an activity”. Nick also looks after the disability sport Facebook page – you can keep up with the latest news and chat to him at www.facebook.com/leedsdisabilitysport
LeedsCard offer Many activities in the disability sports programme offer a discount to LeedsCard holders – just look out for the LeedsCard icon.

It’s time to dig out your swimming costume as we join forces with British Swimming and the BBC to bring the Big Splash to Leeds. Billed as the world’s largest celebration of swimming, the Big Splash aims to get more people to take the plunge and get in the pool. In Leeds, we’re giving all our family swim sessions a Big Splash makeover.
All our pools have a new range of exciting equipment, including water polo games and floating islands, to make sure the focus is firmly on having fun. Just in case you need more motivation to head to your local pool with the family, we’ve also introduced the Big Splash family reward card. Use it to get every fifth family swim for free. The more you visit, the more free sessions you’ll enjoy.
Just ask for a Big Splash family reward card at reception next time you visit your local pool. Get your card stamped each time you attend a family swim session and on your fifth visit your swim will be absolutely free.
Find out more For details of all Big Splash swim sessions across Leeds visit: www.leeds.gov.uk/bigsplash
A fighting chance Leeds-born Nicola hopes for Olympic glory Nicola Adams is Britain’s most successful female boxer. She’s a strong medal hope for London 2012 in the flyweight class as her sport makes its Olympic debut. Nicola started boxing after enjoying boxercise classes with her mum at a Leeds gym. She won her first bout aged just 13 and hasn’t looked back! Now 29 she’s one of the world's most impressive boxing talents. She even makes use of switch-hitting, shifting from fighting in orthodox stance to southpaw – a technique only the best can master. A world silver medalist in 2008 and 2010; Nicola won her first major tournament in June 2011, securing gold at the European Union championships in Poland. Then in October 2011 she took gold at the European championships, putting her in pole position for next year’s Olympic qualifier. Let’s hope the former Burmantofts ABC star continues her golden streak at London 2012.

Leeds parks volunteers meet twice a month on Tuesdays to do valuable gardening and site management work at Leeds parks. Work is varied and includes planting, weeding, pruning and more at community and city parks across Leeds. All tools and training are provided.
Leeds museums and galleries offer many new and exciting volunteer projects across nine attractions. Volunteers work alongside staff to help care for our collections. They clean, photograph, repackage and catalogue items, and carry out research.
Leeds wildlife volunteers meet twice a month on Wednesdays and on the third Sunday of each month. They do a wide variety of nature conservation work across the city, ranging from dry stone walling to wildflower planting. If you’d like to get some exercise and improve local wildlife habitats, this is the opportunity for you. For more information or to get involved with Leeds park volunteers or Leeds wildlife volunteers, or volunteering in any capacity for the parks and countryside service, contact the rangers, call 0113 237 5320, email: email@example.com or go to www.leeds.gov.uk/rangers
Active life volunteers Could you be a role model to older people and help them get more out of life? We need enthusiastic volunteers over 45 to engage older people in a range of enjoyable sports and physical activities in community settings. No previous experience is needed as training and support is given, and volunteers have the chance to gain nationally recognised qualifications. Sessions take place during the day and each one lasts an hour or less. Your commitment can be flexible so you can volunteer at a time to suit you. We arrange an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau disclosure check (CRB) for all volunteers.
