Take the time now to get your home ready for the winter season by following these tips: 1. Have your heating system checked by a professional annually. This will ensure that your system is working safely and efficiently which, in turn, will save you money. If you heat by wood, clean your fireplace or stove. Have your chimney flue checked for any buildup of creosote and then cleaned to lessen the risk of fire. 2. Make sure your home is properly insulated. If necessary, insulate walls and attic. This will help you to conserve energy and reduce your homes power demands for heat. 3. Caulk and weather-

strip doors and windowsills to keep cold air out. 4. Install storm windows or cover windows with plastic from the inside. This will provide an extra layer of insulation, keeping more cold air out. 5. Inspect and flush your water heater. 6. Clean gutters. Leaves and other debris will hamper drainage. 7. Replace batteries of smoke, heat and carbon monoxide detectors. If you did not do it when you set the clocks back, do it now. Protecting water pipes To prevent the mess and aggravation of frozen water pipes, protect your home, apartment or business by following the sim-

ple steps below. Before cold weather 1. Locate and insulate pipes most susceptible to freezing, typically those near outer walls, in crawl spaces or in the attic. 2. Wrap pipes with heat tape (UL approved). 3. Seal any leaks that allow cold air inside where pipes are located. 4. Disconnect garden hoses and shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets. This reduces the chance of freezing in the short span of pipe just inside the house. When it’s cold 1. Let hot and cold water trickle at night from a faucet on an outside wall. 2. Open cabinet doors to allow more heat to get to un-insulated pipes under a sink or appliance near an outer wall. 3. Make sure heat is left on and set no lower than 55 degrees. 4. If you plan to be away: (1) Have someone check your house daily to make sure the heat is still on to prevent freezing, or (2) drain and shut off the water system (except indoor sprinkler systems). If pipes freeze 1. Make sure you and your family knows how to shut off the water, in case pipes burst. Stopping the water flow minimize the damage to your home. Call a plumber and contact your insurance agent. 2. Never try to thaw a pipe with an open flame or torch. 3. Always be careful of the potential for electric shock in and around standing water. November 28, 2012 It’s nearly 5:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Our governing bodies seem to spend most of their time, or is it our time, as we are paying for it? – passing new laws. How about a new law that says, “Five o’clock in the morning is too early to get up.” Naturally this new law, like all others, would have to learn to bend a little. It should not apply when we’re going hunting, fishing, motorcycling, golfing, or any of the other constitutional guaranteed bendable rights, or if your wife wants to get up before 5:00 to do the laundry. On the other hand our village seems to have an unusual number of youngsters. The senior-grand folks claim it’s due to a train that comes through just before 5:00 in the morning. Honking its horn, it’s too early to get up and too late to go back to sleep.

I have been sitting here wearing my best writer’s cardigan, trying to conjure up some funny material and all I could come up with is This morning I put on a pair of pants. When I the true revelation about Santa. put on my shirt, would it have been proper to say a pair of shirts? Well until next time, put another log on the fire. Call someone that you owe money to and I found a ballpoint pen with a “Crosby Group” hope he’s not home. Leave a message, “The logo. Our son is a lawyer and CEO of “The check is in the mail.” Your phone message will Crosby Group.” Every time I use the pen to be as Bull-larney free as this chatter about add 2 + 2, the sum comes up to 5 and our old friend Santa. sometimes to 3. Then I realized it must be the one his office uses while billing their clients. I’m sure you, your family and friends will have When Chuck was asked, “How could the sum of a bountiful Christmas loaded with gifts. Our 2 + 2 ever come to 5?” as a good lawyer he country’s leaders have taught us how to answered, “It can be whatever you want it to make this bounty happen. If you don’t have enough money to cover your bills – borrow be.” from China with interest and pay it back with more borrowed funds. Minutes worth of history: The Indian Castle Church was built by Sir William Johnson in I located the word Thanksgiving in a Webster’s 1769 and at his own expense. With a Fort New World Dictionary. Webster is an accepted Plain address, a few miles west of Fort Plain authority on words – on spelling, meaning, and it was built on land used as a stronghold by usage. Webster on the word Thanksgiving: “A the Indians as early as 1642. formal public expression of thanks to God.” For the past two years you have been subjected to some of my Irish blarney. I must confess that I only resort to blarney when the truth doesn’t suit or when the truth needs a helping hand by a friend.

Election is over and this year is nearly over. Over 27 million citizens did not have a reason to get up early – they did not have a job to go to. Maybe in the next four years we can increase that changer benefit to cover 50 million. If minimum wage continues to Now listen carefully, I have a tale to spin. I increase, several more will be able to stay in admit I have on occasion attempted to baffle bed mornings. you with blarney, but true Irish blarney could never do justice to this chatter. Possibly a Will Rogers, the world famous American mixture of good old Yankee bull with a dash of humorist, said he did not have to make up blarney. Lets call it Bull-larney. With this jokes about politicians. All he had to do was short notice it will have to suffice. read the daily newspapers and quote the already published truths. I was told by a truly unreliable source that he knows absolutely, with certain positivity, that Writing can be a time-consuming chore. I’ve he has found out what Jolly Old Santa does learned that if you steal from one author it’s during the spring, summer, and fall to earn plagiarism but if you steal from many it’s enough money to pay his elves for all of those research. toys and feed for his reindeer. This “Hello Again” is the sort of writing that gives failures a bad name. If you copy and publish this line, it will be plagiarism. While chatting with a lawyer friend about the national election, I said, “All of the socialists hate me.” He replied, “That’s ridiculous. Every socialist hasn’t met you yet.”

Then I looked up the word “God”. Webster said, “The creator and ruler of the universe,” which includes everything, including you and me. Then I continued with the word universe which Webster states, “The totality of all things,” which again includes you and me. Next I read John 3:16 in the Holy Bible and it said, “For God so loved the world, he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life,” which includes you and me. God says in his word – the bible – he loves us. If we trust Webster to tell the truth, shouldn’t we trust God even more?

Treat today as the first day of the remainder of your life. Make a new friend and stay acquainted with your heavenly father and his son. Always Don’t spread this around – especially to the wave hello to your farmers – it might end up hurting Santa’s neighbors. business. Dollars and sense by David Uffington Stay alert for holiday scams and thefts The last thing you want at this time of the year is to fall victim to a scam, one that either takes your hard-earned shopping money or destroys your credit through identify theft. This year is going to be even worse for holiday

scams and thefts. Here are some tips to avoid becoming a victim: • Watch how you dress if you’re shopping in crowds. The bumping and chaos is a perfect scenario for a thief to take your wallet or purse. Wear pants and put your wallet and car keys in a front pocket, the deeper the better. Or leave your

wallet locked in the car trunk and only carry the credit or debit cards you’ll use. • If you use a credit card, don’t let it out of your sight when you give it to a clerk to swipe. If someone near you is using a cell phone, they could take a picture of your credit card. Be alert. They could be long gone

and make online purchases with your card number before you even get home. • If carrying cash, choose which pocket the money will go in. Put all same-denomination bills in your front left pocket, such as $10s or $20s. When you get change, put it all in the right front pocket. That way you

only have to pull out one bill at a time from your left pocket and will know exactly what it is without showing all your money in a crowd. If you need to re-sort your money, use the privacy of a restroom stall so no one sees the cash you’re carrying. • At home, don’t put presents under the tree too early in the season. When you go out, leave a light and television on to make it look like someone’s home. • Collect the mail out of your box as quickly as you can after it’s delivered. Thieves want your information. • Don’t order online unless it’s from a site you’ve successfully dealt with in the past. New sites are highly suspect. They

might be just data collection points for your name and credit-card number. Before shopping online, go to http://blogs.mcafee.com and put “12 Scams of Christmas” in the search box. Read about the highly creative ways the thieves hope to relieve you of your cash. • An unfortunate caveat this year: Beware online greetings e-cards. Check carefully before you download the card. Local bookstore bucks the big-box trend: Holland Patent resident opens independent bookshop featuring automotive books and automobilia HOLLAND PATENT, NY — Award-winning automotive historian and writer Mark Theobald’s lifelong passion for cars has led him to establish Adirondack Motorbooks & Collectibles, an independent bookstore and hobby shop focusing on automotive history and die-cast motor vehicles in Holland Patent, NY. Good car books and die-cast replicas are

harder to find in recent years, according to Theobald. “I fill the gap the big-box stores left. A decade ago, Borders and Barnes & Noble had respectable automotive book sections and KayBee Toys and Toys ‘R’ Us had aisle upon aisle of die-cast models. Today the two national book retailers rarely stock more than a single shelf of automotive titles while the

remaining toystore chain offers an embarrassingly small selection of die-cast trucks and automobiles.” Although the big box stores’ automotive inventory has all but vanished, the nation’s car lovers remain as numerous as ever. According to Theobald, “The car lovers didn’t go away; the stores just replaced the automobiles with video games and related books

and merchandise.” Despite that fact, he notes, both young and old continue to crave cars. Pixar’s movie Cars introduced a new generation to the appeal of vintage motorcars and the excitement of racing. Adirondack Motorbooks offers all the classic Cars characters, and beyond: “When your car curiosity wakes up, you always want to know more. Kids and adults can find it here.” Located on State Route 365, the 2000-sq.ft store stocks 4,000 new, used and rare books, 5,000 back-date magazines and 6000 die-cast replicas in various scales and prices. While the emphasis is on trucks and automobiles, he also carries books and replicas of construction equipment, military vehicles, farm machinery and motorcycles. Motorsports enthusiast will discover an entire room filled with diecast replicas of the region’s most popular DIRT modifieds, World of Outlaws sprint cars and NASCAR stock cars. Diehard fans will be amazed at the store’s selection of Winston and Sprint Cup books, caps, T -shirts and jackets. Included is a spacious coffee bar where people who enjoy and appreciate automobiles can sit and enjoy a complimentary cup of coffee with fellow

auto aficionados. Firsttime visitors will also receive a FREE automotive magazine valued at $3-$6. Plans for the coming year include regular weekend cruise-ins and auto club events. Theobald invites local clubs to call 315-8655503 to reserve a spot for the upcoming summer series, which will be featured on carshownews.com. The store, located in the center of Holland Patent, was formerly Jweid’s Market. Five years ago, Theobald purchased the building, fully stocked with dry goods and decades-old shelves and coolers. He donated the contents to local charities, and gave the refrigerators, scales and store fixtures to anyone who would take them away. He spent three years gutting and rebuilding the structure after which he constructed the store’s specialized bookcases, spending almost a year organizing the store’s merchandise for the Dec. 1 opening. “People around here were ready for me to open years before I was ready,” he remarked. The bookshop in Holland Patent is not Theobald’s first. Before moving to the Mohawk Valley he operated a similar operation, Motor Library, in Vermont’s Green Mountains. During his career in the wholesale automobile business Theobald developed a string of auto-

related websites devoted to such diverse subjects as automotive safety (crashtest.com), auto shows (carshownews.com) and a u t o - b u y i n g (safecarguide.com). He is proudest of coachbuilt.com, an online encyclopedia detailing the history of America’s automotive body builders, some located in the Mohawk Valley. At this year’s Antique Automobile Club of America’s Fall Meet in Hershey, PA, Theobald’s website was awarded the Society of Automotive Historians’ E.P. Ingersoll Award, which honors the year’s best presentation of automotive history using media other than print. “I established the Holland Patent bookshop in order to provide local residents a place where they can inspect prospective purchases in person, unlike my competition who sell and display their merchandise exclusively through the internet. I hope local auto enthusiasts take advantage of the hands-on buying experience that Adirondack Motorbooks & Collectibles offers and trust they’ll get the same enjoyment from the automotive hobby as I do,” said Theobald. Starting Wednesday Dec. 1, Adirondack Motorbooks will be open daily between noon and 6 p.m. The automotive book store, toy and hobby shop is located at 9554 Main St, State Route 365, Holland Patent, NY, directly across the street from Grande’s Pizzeria and the Holland Patent Pharmacy. The store is wheelchair accessible and parking for 20 cars is available in front of and behind the building.

Give yourself a bonus gift of energy savings with these holiday savings tips from NSYERDA Whether you’re hosting holiday gatherings, decking the halls with festive lighting or running countless holiday errands, the holiday season doesn’t have to run up your energy bills. To reduce energy use during the holidays, follow these tips from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). Give the gift of savings • Give your family the gift of energy savings with ENERGY STAR® qualified

electronics such as computers, printers, televisions, battery chargers, Blu-Ray™players, DVD players and cordless phones. These products use less energy than products without the ENERGY STAR label. • Include rechargeable batteries for additional savings. Although these batteries have a higher initial cost, they can be recharged and used many times, and therefore have lower environmental impact than dis-

posable batteries. • Don’t forget advanced power strips. These strips eliminate standby or “phantom” power from electronics that still continue to draw power after they are turned off. Decorate with ENERGY STAR lighting • Decorating your home for the holidays can be costly, but many energyefficient options are available that can help save money. When purchasing lights, look for the ENERGY STAR label, and always remember to use an automatic timer to turn your decorative lights on and off. • Consider ENERGY STAR qualified decorative light strings featuring light-emitting diodes or LED technology. These decorative light strings consume 70 percent less energy than conventional incandescent light strands, can last up to 10

times longer, are cool to the touch, reduce the risk of fire in your home, and if a single bulb burns out, the rest of the LED string will stay lit. Combine trips • Plan your shopping trips carefully. Several short trips can use twice as much fuel as a longer one that covers the same distance. Stop by the store on your way home from work to conserve. • Be sure to drive sensibly and defensively as traffic increases around the holidays. Aggressive driving wastes gas and can lower your mileage by as much as 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent around town. No peeking • Whether preparing holiday feasts or simply doing some baking, don’t be tempted to open the oven door. Every time you do, the temperature goes down 25 degrees, forcing

your oven to work harder and use more energy. • Heat multiple items in the oven together when preparing holiday meals and treats. Turn the oven off 10 to15 minutes early to let residual heat finish the job. For a real energy-saving present this season, give yourself the gift of a comprehensive home en-

ergy assessment, which can help you decrease energy use in your home, cut energy costs and increase comfort in 2012 and beyond. To find out how you can qualify for a free or reduced-cost whole-house energy assessment in New York State, go to http://nyserda.ny.gov/residential.

What should I do in a storm? • Dress in several layers of lightweight clothing, wear mittens and a hat (preferably one that

covers your ears). • Wear waterproof, insulated boots to keep your feet warm and dry and to maintain your footing in ice and snow. • Minimize travel. If travel is necessary, keep a disaster supplies kit in your vehicle. • Listen to a NOAA

Weather Radio or to other local news channels for critical information from the National Weather Service (NWS). • Winterize your vehicle and keep the gas tank full. A full tank will keep the fuel line from freezing. • Insulate your home

by installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic from the inside to keep cold air out. • Maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected every year. • Bring pets/companion animals inside during winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas with nonfrozen drinking water. • Running water, even at a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing. • All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside and kept clear. You may also want to carry a set of tire chains in your vehicle for heavy snow conditions. 3. Keep a windshield scraper and small broom for ice and snow removal and maintain at least a half tank of gas throughout the winter season. 4. Finally, plan long trips carefully. son, every driver could learn a lesson from our school bus drivers. It is elementary, but we have to keep our vehicles clear of ice and snow. Good vision is a key to good driving. 2. Plan your stops and keep more distance between cars. Be extra alert. Remember, snowdrifts can hide smaller children. Moreover, always match your speed to the road and weather conditions. Trapped in a car What would you do if a blizzard trapped you on the road? Here are some tips to follow: 1. Stay in your car and wait for help to find you. 2. Run your engine for short periods of time to stay warm. Keep your down-wind window open and make sure your exhaust pipe is clear of snow. 3. Turn on the dome light at night when you are running the engine to signal rescuers. 4. Hang a brightly colored piece of cloth or piece of clothing from your car. 5. Exercise from time to time by vigorously moving arms, legs, fingers and toes to keep blood circulating and to keep warm. S o u r c e : www.dhses.ny.gov

Warning lights send messages you can’t ignore (NAPSA) — Safety on the road is no accident. For example, when a warning light illuminates on a car’s dashboard, it is alerting you to a situation that requires your attention. While not all warning lights are a sign that disaster is imminent, no warning indicator should ever be ignored. To help, the experts from AAA offer the following tips: Oil Pressure Light The oil pressure light is

usually an oilcan symbol or the word “OIL.” It comes on when there is a drop in engine oil pressure. Of all the warning lights, the oil pressure light indicates the greatest potential for serious mechanical damage. If the oil pressure warning light comes on and stays on, pull off the road at the earliest safe opportunity, shut off the engine and call for assistance. Engine Temperature

Light The engine temperature light is usually a thermometer symbol or the word “TEMP.” It comes on when the engine temperature is unsafe for your vehicle. Unless the engine temperature is quickly brought under control, major damage may occur. If there are any signs of a cooling system leak, pull off the road at the earliest safe opportunity, shut off the engine and call for assistance. Be careful when opening the hood in the presence of steam, and never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Charging System Light The charging system light is usually a battery symbol or the word “ALT” or “GEN.” It comes on when the vehicle electrical system is no longer being supplied power by the alternator. If this light comes on, shut down all unnecessary electrical loads such as the radio, heater or air-conditioning, then drive the vehicle to a repair facility immediately for further inspection. Check Engine Light The check engine light comes on when there is a problem affecting the vehicle’s exhaust emissions. If the light comes on and stays on, make an appointment with an auto repair shop to have the problem checked in the near future. However, if the check engine light begins flashing repeatedly, the catalytic converter is over-heating. Should this occur, drive the vehicle to a repair shop immediately for further diagnosis. To learn more, visit www.AAA.com or call 800-AAA-HELP. To locate an AAA Approved Auto Repair shop, visit www.AAA.com/repair.

Millions of people can buy and sell cars with more confidence, because they know the facts about curbstoners.

Did you know? Airbags were invented in the early 1950s by John W. Hetrick, an industrial engineer and member of the U.S. Navy. It wasn’t until roughly 20 years later that airbags began being used in mass-produced autos. Nowadays, air-bags have become an instrumental part of a vehicle’s safety system, offering extra protection in crashes. Each year, thousands of lives are saved thanks in part to airbags. However, airbags are not without some measure of

Avoiding curbstoners (NAPSA) — To help protect yourself when buying a used car, watch out for curbstoners. What are curbstoners? These are people who sell cars that don’t belong to them, many from scrap yards or towing impounds. They pose as private sellers but are actually unlicensed dealers. This practice is illegal in most states and goes around many of the safeguards that are in place to protect used-car buyers. By some estimates, as many as one in 10 car advertisements on popular websites may be by

curbstoners. So be careful, because often, such cars come with hidden problems. What you can do To be able to buy with more confidence, it helps to: • Take a test-drive-listen for weird noises, check the acceleration and braking. • Have a mechanic inspect the vehicle. • Get a Carfax Vehicle History Report. So you can know more about the car before buying. You can get a Carfax Report and learn more at www.carfax.com.
