Step 1

Make up the end panels

First make the two end frames, using the 32 mm x 32 mm x 380 mm long pieces of batten as the vertical sides, and the 32 mm x 32 mm x 236 mm pieces as the horizontal sides. The horizontal sides fit inside the vertical ones. Secure each corner with wood glue and two chipboard screws. Then affix six 8 mm x 44 mm x 300 mm slats to the outside of each frame, spacing them out evenly and ensuring that the lowest gap will admit a 38 mm x 38 mm batten. Secure them with wood glue and 25 mm wire nails.

Step 2 Screw in the base supports Use the three 32 mm x 32 mm x 780 mm battens to create a strong base. Space them out evenly and then screw the end of the battens into the lowest gap in the end frames, remembering to strengthen the bond with wood glue.
