Pretty in Pink
Pantone named a bright pink, living coral, as 2019’s color of the year, and it’s easy to incorporate this hot color into your landscaping. Look for roses, petunias, zinnias and hibiscus to add this color to your garden. Experts also anticipate light blush tones to become the new neutral for hardscape and stone selections.
Today’s pergolas are more than just
an outdoor structure. They come with some luxurious features like roll down shades, space heaters, lighting and sound systems and even outdoor beds. Made of wood or easy-care composite, you can make a pergola a real outdoor centerpiece.
Functional Design Elements
Think of an edible vertical garden on a trellis that’s also a privacy fence, a retaining wall with built-in seating. The more clever the design, the better. Edible gardening is a great way to accomplish this, as is thinking up rather than out in your design.

programmable irrigation systems make lawn maintenance easier than ever. Also look out for programmable, customizable lighting systems that can make your home truly unique.

With sustainability trends comes composting. Composting is a natural process of recycling organic materials, like kitchen scraps, into a rich soil additive. Home composting depends on how much area you have available and other factors, but it can be an easy and rewarding process in that you generate less trash and get lush gardens. Ask your local garden center to set you up with the right tools to get you started.

n energy audit is a professional assessment of the energy efficiency of a home or building. It can help you find out where you’re losing energy and what you can do to save money. The U.S. Department of Energy says you can save 5-30 percent on your energy bill by getting an audit and taking appropriate action.

Finding an Auditor
If your local government has an energy or weatherization office, it may be able to identify an audit professional. So can your utility company. As with any home service professional, the Department of Energy says to get several estimates and make sure to contact references and the Better Business Bureau.
Before the Visit
| Friday, July 19, 2019 | Lee Central Coast Newspapers
Compile the last year of energy bills and make note of problems like condensation or drafty rooms. Think about the following lifestyle questions: Is anyone home during working hours? What is the average thermostat setting in each season? Is every room in use?
During the Visit
The auditor uses a variety of specialty tools to determine your energy uses. Infrared cameras: These cameras help determine air leakage. Combustion analyzer: Samples flue gases in vented appliances and measures gas flue gas temperatures, leaks and carbon monoxide. Blower door: A large fan that depressurizes the house and allows the auditor to find air leaks. Manometer: Measures differences in air pressure to help an auditor find leaks and test exhaust devices.
Garage Doors and Energy The topic of insulating your garage door is not as straightforward as it might seem. According to EnergyStar.gov, you might not need to insulate it at all. According to EnergyStar.gov: “If you keep a car, paints, chemicals, or a lawn mower in the garage the fumes from these items could leak into your house if the garage is part of the ‘conditioned space.’ In this case, it would be better to insulate the wall between the house and garage to seal out any garage fumes.”
What the Auditor Looks For
The auditor will check for air leaks around outlets, windows, doors and fixtures. They will also inspect the fireplace, if there is one. They will also check your thermostat and carbon
monoxide and smoke detectors. Windows and doors will be checked for condensation, and they’ll also look at your air registers and insulation and framing.
They may also check for lead paint and any other indoor air quality problems. They should also perform a blower door test, which helps them check
for air leaks. The average home, the Department of Energy says, has enough air leaks to equal a medium-sized window being open all day.
While a professional audit may be the most thorough way to find out where your money is going, there are a few things you can do yourself. Check for obvious leaks around baseboards, doors, windows and outlets. Seal the leaks with the appropriate material, like caulk or weatherstripping. You can also check your insulation, especially if you have an older home.

Keep Cool, Save Money T
Use You Windows
Natural ventilation is one of the most of effective ways to stay cool and save on energy at night. Turn off your AC at night and open the windows while you sleep. Shut them and lower the blinds during the day to keep cool air inside. Window coverings can also prevent heat gain and improve energy efficiency.
High-Efficiency Heating & Cooling The living space in Energy Star-certified homes and apartments are served by ventilation systems that continuously exchange indoor air with outdoor air to reduce the indoor air pollutants in your home. Systems are also installed in bathrooms and kitchens to more rapidly remove moisture and cooking contaminants that can be harmful to occupant health and to the durability of your home. home any faster and may result in unnecessary expense.
Fans help circulate air and can keep you cooler at a higher thermostat setting. Remember to turn them off when you leave; fans cool people, not rooms. Bathroom fans can remove heat and humidity when you shower or bathe. Laundry rooms and kitchens also benefit from ventilation to the outside.
Keep Your Cooling System Running Efficiently
A cooling system checkup as summer begins can help keep your equipment running in top shape. Avoid placing lamps or electronics near thermostats. Thermostats sense heat from appliances that keeps them running longer than necessary. Also, make sure furniture and other objects are not blocking airflow through your registers.
More Energy-Efficient Cooling Tips
Avoid using the oven on hot days. Cook on the stove, use a microwave or
an outdoor grill. Install efficient lighting. Incandescent lights produce more heat than light. Take advantage of daylight instead of artificial lighting, but avoid direct sunlight. Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes. Consider air drying both dishes and clothing. Take short showers instead of baths. Minimize activities that generate a lot of heat, such as running a computer, burning open flames, running a dishwasher, and using hot devices such as curling irons or hair dryers. Seal cracks and openings to prevent warm air from leaking into your home. Add caulk or weatherstripping to seal air leaks around leaky doors and windows. Turn down the temperature of your water heater to the warm setting (120°F). You’ll not only save energy, you’ll avoid scalding your hands.
Set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible when you’re home to lower your cooling bill. When you’re away, keep your house warmer than normal and lower the setting when you return for maximum saving. Remember: A colder setting than normal when you turn on the air will not cool your

he heat of summer means increased energy bills. But if you follow these simple, inexpensive tips from the Department of Energy, you’ll ensure you stay cool and save money throughout the season.
A Pivotal Season for
The summer season brings as many opportunities as challenges for homeowners, with lawn care and maintenance among them.
t’s both a time to enjoy the outdoors and take pride in the overall look of your home. But it also requires extra work to keep your grass green through the heat and dryness. It’s also the time of year that will help keep your lawn healthy all year long. While some are well-versed in lawn care, others are experiencing the challenge for the first time. But each can benefit from these basic tips and procedures provided by the lawnmaintenance experts on the website LawnCare.org.
One common misconception about mowing is the instinct to keep grass as short as possible. It’s a quick and time-saving maneuver, but you actually want to keep your grass taller while maintaining a neat appearance. Taller blades absorb more light and allow your lawn to provide more nutrients to the soil and retain moisture under their shade.

It’s a mistake to treat grass clippings as waste. Instead, remove the bagging feature from your lawnmower if you have one and let the shredded grass freely distribute into the grass. The cuttings will supply added nutrients and extra shade that will enhance the health of your lawn.
Fertilizing your lawn at the beginning and end of summer is crucial to year-long lawn health. In spring, fertilizers fill grass with nutrients that inhibit growth; at the onset of fall, winterizing fertilizers capture nutrients to protect grass from the harsh weather to come.
Seeding and Weeding
Most lawns have patches that don’t grow properly or uniformly, so seeding

Environmentally Friendly Pest Control Pests come in a variety of forms: weeds, insects, animals, molds, and fungi to name a few. The need to control outdoor pests varies. Having some weeds in your garden or some grubs in your lawn may be tolerable. However, certain pests present serious threats in some years. Some pests can damage human and animal health, such as mosquitoes that carry diseases. Pesticides provide relief from many pests, but they are not the only solution to pest problems, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Learn more about environmentally friendly pest control at the EPA’s website at https://bit.ly/2n4HElW.
is necessary to prompt growth. To avoid overworking the grass, seed just once and water on a routine schedule to encourage patient growth. Removing the nuisance of weeds also requires patience and vigilance.
Frequent inspection and weeding helps eliminate the ability of weeds to form roots and become even more harmful.
Watering, of course, is key to a
healthy lawn. But over- or underwatering your lawn is a mistake. The experts recommend hydrating the expanse of your lawn with an inch of water on a weekly basis, whether that comes from rain or through sprinklers or a hose. Water in the early morning to ensure absorption into the soil before the drying effects of the sun. Take care to water with care — over-saturation can cause soil to become infertile.
Clean and Green
Keeping your lawn free of debris is necessary year-round, but especially at the end of summer. With the coming of fall, leaves and debris left on the ground can damage soil, creating an inviting environment for bugs and unsafe conditions that can delay growth in the spring.
