ART concept~ “Breath of Life / Dresden & Columbus” is a dualcity artwork, bridging the Atlantic, and celebrating sister-city relationship between Dresden, Germany and Columbus, Ohio, USA. The facade of an historic building in each city is temporarily transformed with light… making it appear to be “slowly breathing,” as though it’s in a relaxed state of Zen-like meditation. Waves of light rise and fall at the pace of human breath, creating the visual impression of respiration. The Columbus installation was installed in February 2012, and the Dresden installation is in planning for 2013. Given Dresden’s nearly total destruction in February 1945, I think the vision of one of its great historic buildings appearing to be breathing will be extremely moving. All lighting is computer-controlled, energy-efficient LED technology. The Katholische Hofkirche, built in 1738, and one of Dresden’s foremost landmarks, is the project site. Its prominent location on the River Elbe makes it a key component of Dresden’s historic silhouette. A light installation here, becomes an artwork on the scale of the cityscape, with gracefully moving waves of light reflecting in the river. As an artist, I see this project as a way of linking the two cities in a shared public art experience. And in Dresden, I believe it takes on an especially powerful symbolism, as a way of honoring the survival and renewal of one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. – Stuart Williams, Artist / New York City

• Waves of light repeatedly rise and fall on the facade, suggesting that the building is “slowly breathing.” The pace of the rising and falling light is controlled by a computerized “visual score,” which is programed by the artist. A master control unit and timer allow remote on & off each evening at any desired time. • A professional crew of three lighting technicians installs the LED lamp fixtures, and connects them to electrical power. NOTE: A more detailed step-by-step description of the installation and removal procedure can be supplied once the project moves into full production planning.

A section of aluminum unistrut is strapped to the base of 10 columns, with a steel cable. The cable is tightened with a turnbuckle. An LED lamp fixture (1.8 kg.) is securely bolted to the unistrut. Nothing penetrates or damages the building. 10 lamp locations completely encircle the tower at 2 levels.
