The Conway Volunteer Fire Department recently put their part of the half-cent County Development Tax money to good use. The fire department gets $5,000 per year. They have been saving their part of the CDT since 2012 so they could make a major purchase of equipment. They were able to purchase five new sets of bunker coats and pants. This was to replace worn out gear and to have sets for new members. They also bought eight mobile radios for the fire trucks and six portable radios for personnel. These are digital capable radios, so that they can talk to all their mutual aid partners. The department was also able to purchase 14 self contained breathing apparatus or SCBAs from Lebanon Rural Fire Department. They were able to update the emergency lighting on all the trucks to newer LED which is more visible and draws less electricity. The department also needed to repaint their 1989 ladder truck but did not think they would be able to because of the cost. It is also very difficult to find a place able to paint such a large vehicle. They then looked into the process of wrapping a vehicle with vinyl instead of painting. It would cost about a third of the price to wrap it over the cost of painting. With the CDT money left over after the equipment purchase, they were able to get the vehicle wrapped at SoundEnvision in Marshfield. This will increase the life of the truck, and there was the added benefit of making it match the other trucks. In the past, the Conway Volunteer Fire Department has saved up several years of CDT money for other projects like renovating the stations and buying fire trucks. “We want to thank the county and the citizens,” said Captain Savage. “Being able to use the CDT money to purchase equipment helps our department greatly.”
