It wouldn’t be a ballgame without the Bear’s PEP Band. Conway High School sports supporters will enjoy a new music line-up this year by the PEP Band. Under the direction of Aaron Parales, the High School band will entertain and add enthusiasm to Conway sporting events.


With the end of the basketball season for boys and girls upon us it's time to talk about the pep band. With having a new band director, Aaron Parrales, he has decided to mix things up by adding songs to the bands list like “25 or 6 to 4,” “I Feel Good,” and “Hips Dont Lie.”

M r. P a r r a l e s s a i d , “One of the new songs, ‘Hips Dont Lie’, is my personal favorite that we played! It brings out the Latin playing style for the kids. The band really likes the songs ‘Crazy Train’ and ‘Paint it Black’ but they also slightly seem to like ‘Firework’ by Katy Perry.” Mr.Parrales has really tried to make the pep

band a lot more than it used to be by trying to have at least 10 or more songs for this season and hopefully more songs for the next season. M r. P a r r a l e s s a i d , “Our first performance went okay. We did not have many songs to perform at that time, so we repeated a lot of our music. Most of the band absolutely loves

pep band, but I'm sure a few of the students w e re n e r v o u s a b o u t playing new songs for the first time.” Wi t h M r. P a r r a l e s adding a few new things to the band this year, including he and Mrs. Peterson actually playing along with the band at the games, the pep band made a huge impact on home games. “Mrs. Peterson and

The Bear fans are looking forward to the new and exciting entertainment the band prepares for next year.

Every year Conway High School takes part in a contest put on by the brand Vans. The contest is called the Custom Culture; in this contest 500 schools compete to create a shoe design for the company. Designs that are entered go through a judging process to determine the winner. According to the Vans Custom Culture page, the contest was created to inspire and empower high school students to embrace their creativity through art and design and to bring attention to diminishing arts education budgets. Vans believes everyone should be empow-

ered to express themselves creatively and should be given the tools to do so. Any student who attends Conway High School in grades 9-12 has the opportunity to create a design for the shoe contest. This year the themes are “Off the Wall” and “Local Flavor.” The first theme is supposed to represent some of the philosophy of Vans, but mostly be thinking out of the box. The second theme about “Local Flavor” is supposed to represent our locality and showcasing our school pride. Students who would like to enter the contest can get the forms from Mr. Hopkins, Mr. Schoelles, or online at All

entries must be turned into Mr. Hopkins or Mr. Schoelles. Out of all the entries that get turned in to them, they will select two students out of those designs. The two students will then receive plain white Vans shoes to make their design come to life. On March 30th, the shoe’s image will be uploaded and sent to the Vans design page. From there, Vans will select their top 50 designs from all of the 500 schools and uploaded them online for the public to vote on. The public voting will be open from April 23rd to May 4th. Mr. Hopkins said, “This is a great opportunity for the students to get real world marketing experience and also experience designing

wearable artwork. It is also nice to be able to have our students compete with students from 499 different schools. Just being able to participate in this contest is a win for our district.” The grand prize this year is $75,000 toward the art program and an on-site lunch-time party. Four runners up will receive $10,000 toward their art program.

Mr. Taylor Hopkins is a teacher at Conway High School. He teaches both junior high and high school. Students in junior high graphic design are in a unit on video production and planning. They are at the stage of script writing and planning the scenes and framing of their own video. They will be hand drawing or creating their vision on Photoshop. Mr. Hopkins said students like to jump into video production with little planning. This unit allows students to problem solve and plan for success in their video production. It also allows their actors and actresses to know the scripting and where the camera will be during the filming. This is the main purpose of the project. Hopkins said as an art teacher, the most important part of showing understanding and problem solving is in the process. Students who are producing content for online platforms should have more depth and meaning and this project allows students to understand that. “I feel like students learn about video production, editing and working with title screens and end credits. They also create relevant content that incorporates humor and drama skills,” said, Mr. Hopkins. Mr. Hopkins feels the best part of the projects are

the creativity and planning students see come to fruition. They tend to film the scenes multiple times to get the best content which furthers their problem solving when it comes to editing. According to Mr. Hopkins, the hardest part for students is sticking to the plan and the script. “They like to change their minds or fly by the seat of their pants.” After the students are finished filming their content and editing it on the school computers, they will be able to present their project for critiques and then make improvements based on their peers’ feedback. They will then have a viewing party with popcorn. Hopkins said his classes will definitely continue doing projects like this. “We have two major productions each year to produce; the Veteran’s Day video and the Joel E. Barber Recruitment video.” Briana Jemes is in graphic design. She is one of the students working on the project. Briana said, “My favorite part of the project is the amount of freedom we get and the hardest part is sticking to one idea.” Brandi Sloan is also a student in graphic design. Brandi said, “My favorite part of the project is we get to work in groups, and we get to pick what we want to do. The hardest part of the project is editing the video.”
