Ramadan The holy month of Ramadan is a month of fasting for Muslims worldwide in commemoration of the revelation of their Holy Book, the Qu’ran, to the Prophet Muhammad. During this time, fasting Muslims won’t eat or drink between dawn and sunset.

The traditional greeting in Ramadan is ‘Ramadan Kareem’ or ‘Ramadan Mubarak,’ and this can often be heard during the holy month.

Opening Hours Most malls & shops are open at their usual times and will have later closing times than usual. Many restaurants are closed until sunset. Some will have dark sheets covering their windows and will only permit dining inside during the day to non-fasters.

Iftar Iftar is the evening meal, taken after the evening Maghrib prayer to mark the end of a day of fasting. Iftar is a joyous occasion as friends and family gather to enjoy a meal together. It is also common for locals to generously invite non-Muslims to witness the festivities.

Public Behaviour One of the main cultural considerations during Ramadan is eating, drinking, smoking, and chewing gum in public. Refrain from doing the aforementioned practices during the holy month as they are prohibited and punishable by law.

Working Hours Working days are shorter for Muslim colleagues during Ramadan. According to UAE labour law, normal working hours should be reduced by two hours during Ramadan, making the average working day around six hours long.

Eid al-Fitr Eid ul-Fitr, also called the ‘Festival of Breaking the Fast,’ is a celebration that marks the end of Ramadan. A lavish affair, it is a national holiday and lasts for three days. For Muslims, Eid is an opportunity for families to dress in their finest clothes and visit friends, family and neighbours bearing gifts and food.

Joint Ventures EKFC and Crop One co-invested US$40 million to build the world’s largest vertical farming facility near Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central. The project is a joint venture with U.S.-based Crop One Holdings, the world’s leading vertical farm operator. When complete, the vertical farm facility will cover 130,000 square feet, but have a production output equivalent to 900 acres of farmland. At full production, the facility will harvest three US tons (2,700 kg) of high-quality, herbicide-free and pesticide-free leafy greens daily, using 99% less water than outdoor fields. The proximity of the farm to the point of consumption will a ensure the quick delivery of the fresh products, reaching customers within hours of harvest, maintaining high nutritional value.

EKFC and Washington DC-based Cuisine Solutions (CSI) have co-invested in a joint venture to become the UAE’s sole distributor of sous vide products, under the name of Emirates Cuisine Solutions. Phase two of the joint venture will see the establishment of the world’s largest halal sous vide manufacturing facility in Dubai. In September 2019, the joint venture started distributing its quality sous vide products to customers, including airlines, restaurateurs and hospitality providers, in the UAE this September. The food manufacturing facility is expected to be operational in 2022.

EKFC signed a joint venture with CCL Holdings founded by Ross Kriel, entering a partnership for a dedicated production facility for kosher food at EKFC’s premises in the UAE. The new partnership is called Kosher Arabia, and production began in January 2021. Our experienced culinary team handle all food production, while CCL Holdings provide certification and production supervision including support for menu development and foodstuff procurement.
