Celebrating women’s participation in sport through photography.
The early nineteenth century saw the first women participation in the Olympic games. Since then we have seen an increasing number of women participating in sporting activities as its previously been viewed as a male dominated social practice. It’s been a slow progression, we have only just in the past few years seen women’s boxing introduced and women’s football and rugby is only now starting to become acknowledged. I have made this photo book as a representation of this and to promote awareness to hopefully encourage more young women to take up a new sport. I have included sports such as rugby and football that are usually associated with being male orientated sports. I have included tennis as it is still evident today that women’s tennis is not as well promoted as men’s in competitions such as Wimbledon. I want to show women in action to break down existing gender stereotypes that women care about how they act or look and the expectations society has put in place of women. I want to celebrate women taking sport seriously and how it should be seen as equal to men.
