About Varaždin Varaždin is a small city located in the northern region of Croatia, about 81 kilometres north of Zagreb. Its surroundings are symbolised by exceptional natural and cultural diversity and rich experiences. Head through the hills of Varaždin, explore the castles, the wine roads and have the taste of the traditional Croatian food. (, 2018) Varaždin is often referred to as the “little Vienna” for its unique baroque architecture (MacGregor, 2013). It is a city of rich history and culture with numerous festivals and events occurring throughout the year; the most famous festivals being Špancirfest, which is the Street Festival held for two weeks in late August, and Varaždin Baroque Evenings, which are held in late September and celebrates classical music and the barque inheritance (, 2018). Varaždin also inherited the name “The City of Angels” for being the home of numerous angel sculptures created by the sculptor Željko Prstec. Angels can be found all across the city, the oldest one being on Varazdin's coat of arms dating back to the 15th century, located on the City Hall. There is also a Museum of Angels in the city. (Krešo, 2012) From children to elderly, Varaždin is the perfect destination for all age groups. There are fun activities and events for children to enjoy and participate in during summer festivals, the nightlife in Varaždin is suitable for young people, as there are many bars and clubs all around the town, and it is active throughout the whole year. The elderly, or anyone interested in mere culture and arts, may simply visit the city to enjoy its beauty and solitude, or escape the busy every-day life by visiting the city's five cultural institutes; The Croatian National Theatre (HNK), the City Museum, Varaždin Concert Hall, the City Library and the Art Gallery (, 2018).

DAY 1 After breakfast, the day will be yours to spend the way you want to. If you choose to go around the town, we’ve put together the things you can do in the city. The unique architecture will take you on a trip through time and offer you an insight of both the baroque and medieval building style all in one. You will be staying in Varaždin during a famous street festival “Špancirfest“ which is rich with events and the streets decorated with colourful stands which all offer unique handmade creations, from toys to souvenirs which you can buy for your


friends and family at home. If you choose to come with kids, the festival offers plenty of different activities for children, including concerts, games and plays. (Špancirfest, 2018)

The river Drava After breakfast, you are free to stay in the city centre, or visit the beautiful, untouched river Drava. It is one of the last truly preserved lowland rivers in Europe, with breath-taking backwaters, springs and overall scenery. (Marbis Tours, 2012) Located only 30 minutes from the city centre on foot, this oasis of peace is the perfect place for you to spend a day away from the stressful every -day life. You can bring food and drinks, some pillows and a blanket, and have a picnic or BBQ by the river.

In the summer, the river is clear and warm, so swimming is also available. There is a water park “Aqua City” a little further from the city centre where you can sunbathe and swim in the lake. Should you get hungry, there is a restaurant located in the water park.

If you are up for some more adventurous activities, you can go rafting on the river Drava for a fee. Make sure to bring a swimsuit, sandals or any shoes that you don’t mind getting wet, sun protection, and food and drinks. You will be given videos and pictures from the activity, so make sure you take your USB stick! There is a cycling path along the river. You can (Marbis Tours, 2012) rent a bike at Hotel Varaždin for a cheap price, or simply take your own bike or choose to go jogging along the riverside. 5


Hiking up the Ivanšćica mountain

At 10:30 after breakfast, you will be meeting the tour guide at the hotel reception, which will take you to Ivanscica by bus. Ivanšćica is the highest mountain of the Zagorje region, with its highest peak of 1060 metres. It has its own special vegetation and is home to the ancient ruins of Belecgrad. With rich views, shade of dense forests, and the highest peak of northern Croatia, Ivanšćica is mountain climbers’ paradise. From the mountaintop, you will be able to see the whole city, including parts of Slovenia and Hungary (Uherkovich, 2013).

Make sure to: ✓ bring food and drinks; you can buy these for cheap at the local grocery stores and bakeries ✓ wear comfortable shoes suitable for hiking ✓ bring a light jacket, as the temperatures can get colder closer to the top of the mountain 6


TRAKOŠĆAN Trakošćan castle with its park is a protected historical estate consisting of the castle, the gardens, and a wooded park with a lake. A museum was established in the castle in 1953 to showcase the aristocratic life through the history of the Drašković family and Trakošćan. The castle features architectural elements of the Gothic era in the 14th century, the Renaissance and Baroque of the 16th— 18th centuries and the Neo-Gothic from the middle of the 19th century (, 2018). At 10:30 after breakfast, you will be meeting with the tour guide and head to the castle together by bus. The trip from Varaždin city centre to Trakošćan is approximately 40 minutes long. There is a restaurant in the area where you can go for a lunch. Your bus will leave back to your hotel in Varaždin at 16:00, so make sure you are there on time!
