nother year, another summer... Where do those weeks of summer go? The Fresh team had a wonderful season of Black Hills wine in the sunny Okanagan, tea and behind-the-scenes photos with the cast of The Young & The Restless, events in and around our amazing city, plus time with family in the summertime sun. As we put away our sundresses and gear up for another school year (yay!), we look forward to what’s to come: more inspirational Vancouver women on our covers, more skincare tips, expert information, and helpful advice to keep us feeling vibrant and beautiful from the inside out. We enjoyed an incredible photo shoot and conversation with this issue’s cover story, Glowbal Group’s Shannon Bosa-Yacoub. In the next few issues we look forward to featuring more amazing women, including travel connoisseur Claire Newell and eTalk Daily correspondent and fashionista Susie Wall. When we first started publishing Fresh Vancouver Magazine, we knew we wanted to help women look and feel their absolute best at any age, appreciate their unique beauty, and love themselves and their lives. We continue to take immense pleasure in doing so. But little did we realize, in those early days, the great significance of our remarkable cover stories. It is these women who breathe life into each and every issue of Fresh. he term “Baby Botox” is one that is freely bandied about the internet these days, especially in reference to Hollywood actors and actresses. And no – it doesn’t mean giving Botox injections to babies! The term was developed in response to Hollywood film directors’ objections to the “frozen face syndrome” created by heavy-handed Botox treatments. Martin Scorsese famously complained that his actresses’ perfectly smooth foreheads allowed no wiggle room for dramatic expression. He was upset that so many female actresses, in their quest for youth, no longer had the ability to look angry. Paul de Freitas, a resident committee member of the British Casting Directors Guild who has worked with Elizabeth Hurley and Catherine Zeta-Jones, says, “Being an actor is about expressing feelings, and if you can’t move your face or feel your lips, it makes that difficult.” Whether you’re a Hollywood starlet or, like most of us, merely the star of your own show (mine is most definitely a sit-com!), you want to look your best while retaining the ability to show emotion. Since the inception of widespread Botox treatments, doctors and clinicians

have continually refined their technique. The sky-high eyebrows and expressionless visages of Botox past are no longer acceptable. Nowadays, people seek out the needle to look fresh, young... and natural. Enter “Baby Botox.” The pop-culture term is used to describe subtle Botox treatments, or “micro-Botox.” The treatment involves tiny doses of Botox injections to the usual areas – crow’s feet, forehead lines, nasolabial folds. The

It takes a skilled practitioner to maintain subtlety while administering Botox, and still obtain the desired results. Ask your doctor or aesthetic professional about low-dose Botox treatments, and decide for yourself if they have the skill and knowledge you are looking for.

More frequent, smaller doses just might be more effective than higher, longer-lasting ones. low-dose treatment allows for movement and a more natural-looking result. It also lasts much less time than a regular dose treatment. Where a typical Botox treatment might last six months, Baby Botox will last only about two. The procedure requires a different understanding of Botox: more frequent, smaller doses just might be more effective than higher, longer-lasting ones. Antioxidants for Skin, Body and Brain By Dr. Cynthia Kwong, ND, MSc


O

ur busy, modern lifestyle, coupled with the common desire to look good, feel great, and live well into our senior years, has created a food culture of nutritional deficiencies and quick By Dr. Cynthia Kwong, ND, MSc fixes. Our diet alone is not sufficient to deal with the increase in free radicals our lifestyles have created. The toll that free radical damage takes on our skin, body and brain makes the role of antioxidants increasingly important.

Focus on Free Radicals

For the past two decades, scientists have focused their efforts on free radicals as a culprit in age-related effects on our skin, body and brain. Free radicals are unstable atoms or molecules that arise from normal metabolism, inflammation, as well as environmental factors such as sunlight, stress, intense exercise, x-rays, smoking and alcohol. Free radicals scavenge damaged cells, proteins and DNA. The same process also causes oils to go rancid and peeled apples to turn brown. Cumulative damage from free radicals is linked to the degenerative changes of aging and age-related disease.

Enter Antioxidants

Antioxidants are nutrients that neutralize free radicals. There are thousands of observational studies (in which investigators look for associations without giving participants supplements to take) that have linked consumption of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables to a lower risk for diseases like cancer, cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Long-term randomized placebo-controlled trials so far have shown mixed results. While research findings are inconclusive, there is no debate that antioxidants play a critical role in the body – scientists simply haven’t figured out exactly how the different antioxidant systems work, because food is complex and so is the way our bodies process it. However, understanding the basics of antioxidants can help guide you to optimize the health of your skin, body and brain. There are several different types of antioxidants, including antioxidant nutrients such as vitamin A, C and E, pigments such as carotenoids and anthocyanins, and minerals such as selenium, all of which can be obtained in our diet. Another type of antioxidant is enzymes, such as glutathione, SOD (Super Oxide Dismutase) and catalase. These are the body’s natural antioxidant defenses in destroying free radicals. Other important antioxidants are CoQ10, which is important for providing energy for our bodily functions, and plant antioxidants.

Antioxidants and Your Diet

When choosing dietary sources of antioxidants,

we all know that unrefined or “whole” foods are the best source of antioxidants. But there are several more factors you can consider. First, use the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) scale. Scientists have rated foods in terms of their antioxidant levels on a scale, so you can tailor your diet to fight free radicals. Some of the highest ORAC foods include dried oregano, extra virgin olive oil, acai fruit, raw ginger root, boiled artichokes, pecans and walnuts, red and white wine, and brewed green tea. With that said, it’s important to consume a variety of healthy foods, not only for their antioxidant content, but for their other nutritional properties as well. It is also important to select fruits and vegetables that reduce your pesticide exposure as much as possible. If the goal is to attain health benefits from consuming a diet high in antioxidants, it makes sense to select foods that are least contaminated with pesticides. The Environmental Worker’s Group - Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce™ lists which fruits and vegetables have the most pesticide residues and are the most important to buy organic. You can lower your pesticide intake substantially by avoiding or going organic with the 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables, which include apples, celery, sweet bell peppers, peaches, strawberries, nectarines, grapes, spinach, lettuce, cucumbers, blueberries and potatoes. Focus on eating the least contaminated produce, such as onions, sweet corn, pineapples, avocado, cabbage, sweet peas, asparagus, mangoes, eggplant, kiwi, cantaloupe, sweet potatoes, grapefruit, watermelon and mushrooms. Mixing colours is an excellent way to maximize your antioxidant consumption from fruits and vegetables. Follow the Canada Food Guide recommendation of seven to eight servings of fruits and vegetables daily. If you aren’t getting the daily recommended fruit and vegetable servings, consider supplementing your diet with a high-quality multivitaminmineral, preferably an organic whole food -based supplement, to ensure you get enough antioxidants. Dietary intake of antioxidants from fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing cognitive impairment. It’s been theorized that free radical formation plays a major role in the deterioration of the brain with age. Antioxidants for healthy memory and cognitive clarity include a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, supplemented with the antioxidant N-acetyl-cysteine, in combination with phosphatidylserine to maintain the integrity of brain cell membranes.

Antioxidants and Your Skin

When it comes to your skin, antioxidants play a significant role in protective and repair processes. They guard your skin cells against the damaging effects of UV radiation that lead to premature aging, hyperpigmentation (sunspots), enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles. Though antioxidants are naturally produced within the skin itself, we can benefit from consumption and topical application of certain antioxidants. These include vitamin A and its

“retinoid” derivatives often found in over-thecounter and prescription anti-wrinkle creams, including retinyl palmitate, retinol and retinoic acid. Other anti-aging topical antioxidants include vitamin C, CoQ10, alpha lipoic acid and green tea.

Antioxidants and Your Body

Seek out antioxidants that improve the detoxification of environmental pollutants and protect against today’s chronic diseases. Persistent environmental pollutants are both toxic to our bodies and contributors to diabetes, obesity and hypertension. Recognition of these underlying causes of disease suggests a need for nutritional support beyond the basic multivitamin. Glutathione is the body’s most abundant antioxidant and is utilized in our detoxification pathways for many environmental toxins. Supporting glutathione synthesis helps rid us of harmful toxins and protect cells from further damage, which seems to underlie many chronic diseases. N-acetyl-cysteine and alpha-lipoic acid are two antioxidants that can be supplemented to increase glutathione levels. Poor diet and toxins can cause damage to mitochondria (the cell’s power generator), a factor in so many of today’s pathologies including cardiovascular disease. CoQ10 enhances and protects mitochondrial function. Finally, a plant-based antioxidant nutrient, resveratrol, is a modifier of multiple biological processes involved in longevity-related functions. Resveratrol has similar effects to caloric restriction in terms of life span extension, and is linked to improvement in insulin sensitivity and reduction of inflammation. The desire to successfully manage the aging skin, body and brain significantly impacts our food decisions. Though current research is inconclusive, we know that antioxidants are a critical dietary component and supplement for improved health and energy, disease prevention and youthful appearance. eauty sleep, as you may know, is no mere urban myth. When we get our needed rest each night, we reduce the appearance of under-eye bags and a wan complexion – in other words, the physical indicators of fatigue. But there is more than these temporary changes in appearance behind the science of sleep. The benefits of beauty sleep are many, and by using key techniques to maximize these benefits, you can make the most of nature’s greatest anti-aging regimen.

Your body is also naturally hydrating your skin when you sleep. While you’re dreaming away in your bed, your body perspires more freely than during the daytime. The moisture on your skin helps smooth out wrinkles and provide a natural skincare treatment. Deep sleep also helps combat cortisol production. Cortisol is the stress hormone that can lead to skin conditions such as psoriasis, alopecia and atopic dermatitis.

Get Plenty of Zs

“In the morning, it’s about protection; in the evening, it’s about reversal and rejuvenation,” says Neil Sadick, Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College. There are a number of reasons to focus your skincare efforts on nighttime rather than daytime. While sunscreen and hydrating lotions are great for day wear (i.e., products that protect your skin), skincare solutions containing vitamins C and E and many other ingredients won’t last as long or work as well during the day. Certain ingredients are affected by exposure to sunlight; others work better when the skin’s temperature is elevated, as during sleep. Some restorative ingredients are more effective during the period of increased cell turnover that occurs each night. If you’re looking to save money on your skincare products or to make them as effective as possible, consider saving your expensive potions for nighttime and sticking to sunscreen and moisturizer during the day.

“An unfortunate side effect of sleep debt,” according to Canadian dermatologist Dr. Lisa Kellett, “is that it ages the skin more rapidly.” The first secret to capitalizing on beauty sleep is to get enough of it. Here are the reasons why. Our bodies cool during the sleep cycle each night. As a result, the circulatory system increases blood flow to the skin. This results in a more radiant appearance and healthier, more vibrant skin. Even more important is the surge in growth hormone that occurs during periods of deep sleep. These vital hormones help repair and rebuild muscle, bone and skin tissues during sleep. The breakdown of proteins occurs at a slower rate during deep sleep, while cell production is increased. Proteins are the building blocks of cell growth and repair, and it is during your deepest slumber that your body works on damage from stress, sun exposure and other harmful factors.

An increasing number of anti-aging skincare devices for overnight use are on the market now. These include facial wraps and heat-activated bandages. One relatively new item that seems to make a great deal of sense is the Wrinkle Prevention Pillow (wrinklepreventionpillow.com). The product is designed to prevent face, chest and neck wrinkles while you sleep by supporting the neck and head so your face isn’t squished into the pillow, resulting in those sleep lines that over the years can become permanent. This specialty pillow is also purported to help make your night creams and serums more effective, since they won’t rub off on the pillow. Because of the elevation provided by the pillow, reduced eye puffiness is an additional benefit. Put wrinkles to bed by stepping up your overnight skincare regimen... and remember to get plenty of sleep! Be sure to avoid known sleep disruptors such as alcohol and caffeine just before sleep. Don’t eat, watch television or exercise for at least two to three hours prior to bedtime. If you feel stressed, try some light yoga or meditation. Prepare to wake up feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and beautiful!

W

hen I refer to smile makeovers as “investments,” I understand why some people might wonder if I’ve forgotten that I’m a dentist. After all, helping people make wise, rewarding investments is the business of a financial advisor or portfolio manager – but a dentist? Well, I have a couple of responses to that. First, while I may occasionally forget some things (like picking up something on my wife’s grocery list), I’ll never forget that I’m a dentist. Helping people unleash their authentic, beautiful, healthy smile has been my passion for decades. It’s more than what I do. It’s who I am! Second, smile makeovers are investments – without question. What’s more, they aren’t ordinary investments. They’re rock-solid investments that pay generous dividends for decades. But instead of a cheque in the mail, smile makeovers deliver their continuous rewards in a currency that, some would say, is far more valuable than dollars: confidence. My patient, John, has been reaping the rewards of his “investment in confidence” for nearly a decade – and counting! John’s story goes back to his grade school days, when an unfortunate dodgeball incident claimed more than his participation in the game; it also chipped his front tooth. As a 10-year old, John wasn’t terribly troubled by this. But as he entered his teens and then shifted into adulthood, he began to feel increasingly self-conscious about his smile. Tragically, his dentist never told him that something could or should be done. In fact, he was told to ignore it, and as long as his teeth were clean and he had good oral hygiene, “all was fine.” But, as you can imagine, all wasn’t fine. Over the years, the edges of John’s chipped tooth began to wear down, and, like so many high achievers who had to cope with excess stress, he developed a clenching and grinding habit that made things worse. Ultimately, John was suffering on two levels. The structure of his chipped tooth was breaking down day by day, and growing unhappiness with his smile was directly diminishing his quality of life. Clearly, John needed and deserved a lasting and transformative solution – and that’s what brought him, nearly 10 years ago, to Smile City Square Dental. The first thing that pleasantly surprised John was that I didn’t start our work together by focusing on various treatment options. Instead, I started with a conversation about the most important person in the room: John. I asked John about his preferences, goals and dreams. I asked him questions that he’d never heard from a dentist, such as, “What would you like your smile to say about you?” And by paying extremely close attention to his answers – both what he was saying, and how he was saying it – I inferred subtle clues that profoundly helped me understand the nuances and nature of his authentic smile. serving the shape of his teeth’s biting edges and corners, evaluating the overall colour of his teeth, and more. When the smile makeover analysis was complete, John and I agreed that the best way to solve both of his smile obstacles – one functional, one personal – was via four ultra-thin porcelain veneers, which I would apply on his upper front teeth, each carefully customized for desired shape, colour and length. Furthermore, since there was relatively little tooth structure to remove, I wouldn’t need to place complete crowns on his teeth. It was a rapid, painless and non-invasive plan to dramatically enhance John’s smile, correct his bite, prevent further wear and, perhaps most important, allow him to make a lasting investment in confidence that would pay dividends for years to come. rriving in Osoyoos for the Black Hills Wine Festival, I took a moment to breathe in the Okanagan air and revel in the calm before the storm. Ducking through the media buzz, I located a glass of wine and quickly found my seat. Dani Kremeniuk I turned to watch the audience flood Spirit Ridge Resort, aptly dressed for the red carpet. It was a meeting of the fabulous at the 3rd Annual Vinos Wine Film Festival party and Black Hills Wine Festival weekend, during which the winery’s new brand, Cellarhand, was also launched. Hosted by Erin Cebula, the film festival’s first prize

went to The Real House Wines of BC; second to Boxed Wine and Nudes; and third to featured artist Jason Gogo for his celebritystudded video I don’t know Jason. Winning submissions can be seen at www.youtube.com/ BlackHillsWinery. Chef Jeremy Luypen of Terrafina Restaurant, who is also an instructor at the Okanagan College culinary arts program, together with his top graduates, served an array of divinely palatable cuisine. Wine flowed from ten different wineries, and $10,500 was raised for the Children’s Charities of the United Way of the South Okanagan. The Nota Bene release party regaled all with its usual splendor, as Black Hills collaborated with Mile’s End Motors to bring wine, food, music and art to festival goers. This year, the winery boasted a recent extension where Black Hills Winemaker Graham Pierce

unveiled the latest Nota Bene vintage amongst art created for the event by Jason Gogo. The final glass poured, we journeyed to Walnut Beach Resort, our host for the weekend, and continued the party on the beach while fire-spinners lit up the sky. The final day brought lots of big sunglasses and the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the brand-new Black Hills Wine Experience Centre. This innovative addition to the Black Hills landscape makes it convenient for guests passing by to sample the winery’s portfolio while enjoying the breathtaking panoramic view. etting older doesn’t have to be thought of with dread. Signs of aging, including decreased energy, weight gain, sexual dysfunction and symptoms of menopause can easily be prevented with bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). While hormone replacement is nothing new, BHRT is a safer, more natural treatment for both men and women than the conventional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with which many people are familiar. Unlike conventional HRT, which uses synthetic, chemically produced hormones, bioidentical hormones are an exact match to the hormones naturally occurring in humans (not horses), and are made from plant molecules. Another benefit of bioidenticals is a lack of controversy involved in producing them, as opposed to some synthetic or conventional hormones. Premarin, for example, is a hormone derived from the urine of pregnant mares that may have been mistreated, while bioidenticals can be derived from yams. Instead of thinking of hormone deficiencies and associated symptoms as a normal part of aging, we should think of these as medically treatable conditions. Menopausal symptoms and sexual dysfunction should not be considered “normal.” Newer theories of aging indicate that aging does not cause hormone deficiencies; rather, hormone deficiencies cause us to age. Besides treatment of menopausal symptoms and sexual dysfunction, BHRT is used to

maintain muscle mass, energy and stamina. It can also help regulate body fat levels and treat thyroid or adrenal gland dysfunction and, in general, keep weight gain at bay. Some clinics offer hormone replacement, but you should find a doctor who specializes in anti-aging medicine who is experienced in testing for hormone deficiencies and prescribing hormone therapy. Treatment packages include

Each prescription generally includes between one and three hormones, and costs approximately $35 per hormone. Government medical plans don’t cover this, but some extended medical plans do. There are minor risks involved with any hormone replacement therapy, but studies have shown that bioidenticals are less likely to cause breast cancer than conventional hormone replacements. Side effects are uncommon, but can include heart palpitations or sweating with too much thyroid hormone, or fatigue with too much progesterone. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is not the fountain of youth, but it certainly helps people feel more youthful, increases stamina, keeps them fitter and greatly improves their quality of life.

Menopausal symptoms and sexual dysfunction should not be considered “normal.” assessment, testing, prescriptions, and followup appointments. Tests are non-invasive, including a 24-hour urine analysis and saliva sample as well as screening for a family history of cancer. Women need to be up-to-date with mammograms and pap smears, and men with PSA prostate tests. After the initial consultation and review of test results, the doctor will write a prescription, if indicated, that is unique to the individual. Hormones come in a cream-filled syringe, which accurately measures each dose to be rubbed into the skin of the buttocks or forearm each night before bed. For women, the cream can be scented with lavender or other perfumes. Absorption through the skin works well to distribute hormones through the blood

With a wine glass and linen napkin in hand, Feast guests stroll a farmer’s field, tasting, sipping and relaxing on hay bales beneath an open sky. Under the white tents, chefs and vintners, caterers and brewers, distillers and more are all donating their time,

talents and products to help raise funds for FarmFolk CityFolk’s work to cultivate a local, sustainable food system in British Columbia. FarmFolk CityFolk was created in 1993 when organic farmer Herb Barbolet saw a need to close the gap between our city’s chefs and the wonderful food that was being grown by our local farmers in the Fraser Valley. Since then,


we’ve accomplished much and have expanded our work throughout the province. When it comes to fundraising, FarmFolk CityFolk adheres to the old adage: Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. “It’s important to have a diversity of funding sources and equally important to raise a good portion of that yourself,” says Nicholas Scapillati, FarmFolk CityFolk’s Executive Director. “It’s crucial that we have funds available to use when and where they are needed most. he’s beautiful, fit, intelligent and friendly; her husband is wildly energetic, vibrant and successful. Together, they have taken the city by storm and now boast a whopping seven (and counting) of Vancouver’s busiest restaurants – all hopping, happening places to see and be seen around town. About declining a role on The Real Housewives of Vancouver, Shannon remarks, “I don’t have time to go for lunch every day!” And not all is rosy for Shannon and Emad: the ten-year anniversary of the Glowbal Group has been marred by recent allegations calling into question their business practices and attacking them on a very personal level. As she contemplates turning 40, Shannon welcomes us into the Glowbal family for an inside peek at what her charmed life is really like.

A decade of Glowbal

“It’s been a long road and lots of hard work, but it’s gone by just like that! We look at it like a family. It was really just mom and pop when we started Glowbal – Emad and I on the floor, a chef who’d been our friend for years. Then it exploded into 700 employees, some of whom have been with us ten years, eight years. There have been high points and low points, and you just have to make it work if you’re going to survive.”

“We share the love between all our restaurants – like children! Each restaurant serves a purpose: they all have their niche. With the kids,

we dine early, so we’ll go to any of them. My son is a good Italian who loves pizza and pasta. My daughter is a great eater– she likes oysters, mussels, sushi and steak. They’ve grown up in the business so their table manners are good and they know what’s appropriate behaviour. They have no choice! “When we and our partners started having children, it made us look at things differently. Just because it’s Coast and people perceive it as a night out doesn’t mean families with children won’t come. We have colouring packs, sippy cups, kids’ menus: everything you would need for the family dining experience. Even at Black + Blue!”

Staying slim in the face of fabulous food

“You know how you’re always up or down ten pounds? I’m at the top end of my ten pounds right now. I’m not naturally thin – I was really heavy as a teenager. After training for a marathon recently I thought, I’ve been really healthy the last three years and I’m just going to go for it. Black + Blue opened and I’d have butter cake and coffee for breakfast while I walked around the restaurant... Now I’m kind of paying for it, and I’m trying to get back to my fighting weight. But I’m not working in the restaurants

most of the time, which is where it’s really difficult. The chefs are like, ‘Here, try this, try that!’ It’s one of the hazards of the job!”

The family work ethic

“Growing up, there were always business meetings at our house. My dad and his brothers [owners of Bosa Properties] had that old-school approach; they’d come to our house, there were handshakes, and all business was done around the kitchen table with a glass of wine. They were workers. Laziness was never an option. I had a really nice upbringing, but my dad sent me to work at 15. He said, ‘Sorry, but your summers in Europe have ended. We’ll go, and you’re going to stay here and get a job.’ So I got a job as a cashier at Safeway. I’ve been working ever since I was 15, because that was the lesson. And it was a great lesson! “Our kids can work in the restaurants if they want, but they’re going to start at the bottom: they’re going to wash dishes and bus tables. My husband and I busted our butts and we didn’t do it so our children could manage the restaurants! That teaches them nothing; it just gives them ego. Work teaches you to be humble and respect who works with you and who works for you. Emad and I will still bus a table or run a plate of food. The job just needs to get done. Even if my kids don’t come into the restaurant business, that lesson is valuable for whatever path they take.”

An inborn love of life’s great pleasures

“I have two much older sisters, and by the time I was four or five years old they didn’t want to travel with us anymore, so it was just my parents and me going on vacation. Conveniently enough, the vacations seem to have been upgraded – I got all the good ones! I always had nice travel and lots of culture, but I think either you have that appreciation for it and see the beauty in it, or it means nothing to you. You can take somebody who has no interest and show them the world and feed them the finest food and the most amazing wine, and to them it’s just nothing. I love shiny things. I love travel. I’ve been lucky to have been exposed to it all.”

Work and marriage

“We’ve gone through many different combinations of working together. The balance we have now is very successful: he runs his show and I run mine, they complement each other and we talk about everything. I run the marketing and deal with the PR, and it’s my own world. We’ve

tried working on the floor side by side, just the two of us in a little 30-seat restaurant, and it was a disaster! We have really different styles. He’s quite high-strung and reactionary, and I’m more mellow and easy-going. That’s where we really used to butt heads. When I had my kids I stopped working, so my contribution to the company was through pillow talk. I would go to design meetings for new restaurants and was involved, but not the way I had been before. That really set the tone for how we work together now – lots of talking. It took a while to come to the realization that we’re both good at what we do and we both know what we’re doing. You have to have faith and trust in each other.”

“I’m 40 next year, so my thing is prevention. I think if your skin is good, it’s the first step in looking good.” The pressure to do it all…

“There are good days and bad days, and you’ve got to breathe through it. I will go, go, go for months and get to a point where I feel like I’m losing control. That’s where I was in about May or June of this year, so I decided to take the summer off with the kids. I’m still in touch every day, but I’m actually in the office just one day a week. I love everything I do: I love the time I spend with my kids and volunteering at their school, and I love going to work. But when there’s no time for you, that’s when things start to crumble. When I’m eating well and feeling good inside, it’s all okay; the problem is when you get kind of lost in butter cake and champagne and stress. There’s this pressure to do it all, and it’s so terrible for women. I’m a mom and I work and there are activities for the kids and it’s hot lunch day at school and my nails are a mess and oh my god my roots… it never ends! We do it to ourselves, and women do it to each other – we’re our own worst enemies. But everybody’s just doing their best!”

Five days of fitness

“About three years ago I started training for a marathon. I trained for three but got injured three times – so I’ve never actually run it. Now, I work out five days a week with a trainer, and we usually do one day that’s a solid run, usually seven to 10k. Anything over 10k is too hard on my knees and I just fall apart, but running

burns so many calories. For that one hour of pain, it makes your legs so good – your calves are good and your butt is good. I’m not a natural runner, though. This whole marathon goal came about because my trainer set it for me. I went from not being able to run at all to being a runner. Now, I can bang out a 10k easily. Well, it’s not easy, but I can get it done.”

A seemingly effortless beauty

“I use really good skincare products like La Mer, Chanel, StriVectin, Cindy Crawford’s Meaningful Beauty. I sort of rotate through them based on how the weather is and how my skin is. I like to go for facials; I’ve been going to House of Davinci in West Vancouver for years. Rosalind Stuart, the owner, looks at my skin and decides what to do. She’s really good and I trust her; honestly, I don’t even ask what she’s doing! I haven’t done anything heavy duty, but I’m not saying I would never do Botox because I probably will. I’m 40 next year, so my thing is prevention. I think if your skin is good, it’s the first step in looking good.”

The personal side of recent business allegations

“It’s very emotional. This is our livelihood and our life. The Glowbal family is the centre of our universe, other than our children. It’s really hard for me, but especially for my husband, because his name is personally affiliated with these accusations. Some of the emails we got were racist and so hurtful. It’s upsetting, but the bigger you get, the bigger a target you become. We’re fortunate to have come through all these years with only good press until now, but there are always haters. Unfortunately, people are very quick to make a judgment without knowing all sides of the story.”

Happiness at 40

“I think everyone’s goal is for your kids to be happy, your husband to be happy and life to be good. I had a healer tell me a couple of years ago that 40 was going to be my year. As 40 looms, I don’t know what’s coming but I feel like it’s good energy. You may not have the resilient body you had when you were 25, but at 25 you don’t have the knowledge, patience, acceptance and understanding that you have when you get older. I’m one of those people who waits for the right things to happen. If I’m meant to do something, it’s going to happen. I just need to keep my balance, keep my family happy and remember to take care of myself.”

A: Yes! Sunscreen is absolutely necessary. The Canadian Dermatology Association recommends we wear sunscreen with a minimum 30 SPF, or sun protection factor. There’s a wide variety of sun protection available. I recommend a 50 SPF and higher for the face, neck and décolleté, to prevent age-related damage caused by UV-A and UV-B exposure. There are some great sunscreens that produce far superior UV protection, containing nano-sized zinc oxide and titanium di-oxide molecules, that aren’t greasy and don’t leave a white film. Some are tinted and look great on their own, while others are water resistant and will stay on through swimming and water activities. However, people typically don’t apply enough sunscreen! We require about a shot glass full (30 grams) for the whole body in one application, and we should re-apply throughout the day, especially after swimming or sweating.

A: Balayage is a technique used to softly lighten the hair from the midshaft downwards. It has a subtle “beachy” effect, and creates dimension, texture and movement in the hair. If you want to achieve a bolder, more dramatic look, then the two-toned ombre colouring is likely more your style. Both techniques work on long and short hair, and they can always be adapted to your personal taste.

Q: I have been hearing a lot of people talk about balayage or ombre hair colouring. What Q: Is sun protection really necessary? And if so, is the difference between them, and will they work on long or short hair? what and how much should I use?

Q: How long does the balayage or ombre service take, and is it damaging to the hair? A: Typically, balayage and ombre services take less than two hours. Of course, depending on the thickness and length of your hair, the time spent in the chair can vary slightly. Damage to the hair is minimal. Our stylists are pros at mixing the right formulation for your hair type and texture, and we take all the proper precautions to ensure that your hair is healthier and shinier when you leave than when you came in. Hyperpigmentation and Your Options By Shelly Lynn Nellis

W

hen we’re young, it might show up as freckles, and we don’t worry about it at all. After all, freckles are pretty cute! As the decades roll by, sun spots and brown patches of hyperpigmentation become more noticeable and more abundant as melanin production increases in the skin and clumps together to form these unwanted dark patches. Sometimes, it looks like a “freckle mustache.” Sometimes, it appears as dark blotches on the cheekbones, hands or shoulders. Wherever your skin has had prolonged sun exposure, you might expect to someday see some level of hyperpigmentation. Sure, prevention is key. But what if it’s too late? The question is: what are the most effective remedies to rid yourself of these dark blemishes once and for all? There are actually a variety

of techniques for treating hyperpigmentation, ranging from home remedies to advanced aesthetic procedures. Depending on the severity of your spots, decide what kind of treatment you think might be right for you. Consult a qualified dermatologist before going ahead with any treatment. Home remedies: For milder cases, home remedies can help lighten hyperpigmentation. It may take several weeks to see noticeable results, and you will need to avoid the sun during treatment. Crushed mint leaves, mashed avocado or thinly sliced potato can be applied to the dark spot for 20 to 30 minutes each day. Break a leaf off your aloe vera plant, which has amazing restorative properties, and apply two to three times daily. Or, apply fresh lemon juice three times daily, allowing the juice to air dry.

The acidity and vitamin C of lemon juice has powerful antioxidant properties and can speed cell turnover. Bleaching creams: Prescription bleaching creams like hydroquinone may be used to lighten age spots. These can be used alone or in conjunction with retinoids and a mild steroid. Lesser strength, non-prescription variations are also available, the most effective of which will include hydroquinone, deoxyarbutin, glycolic acid, or kojic acid. Overuse of these products can irritate your skin and can result in white “rings” surrounding the dark spot, where the bleaching product has touched normal skin. Laser therapy: Laser therapy is a method preferred by many dermatologists to treat dark pigmentation like age spots, since the laser can target the exact location of hyperpigmentation without affecting surrounding tissues. Typically, several treatments are required. Cryotherapy: An effective hyperpigmentation treatment, cryotherapy is literally the freezing of the melanin, typically using liquid nitrogen to break up the dark patch. Once the area heals, the skin will be lightened. Occasionally the treatment will result in permanent scarring. Dermabrasion: This process involves literally sanding the skin to remove the surface layer and allow a new layer of skin to grow. It is typically carried out on the entire face, rather than targeted spots. Dermabrasion can be painful and whole-face procedures may require significant downtime. Chemical peel: A chemical peel can be used to treat age spots by burning the outer layer of skin and allowing new skin to take its place. Again, this treatment is typically performed on the entire face, rather than a targeted area. It can result in redness and some discomfort for a few days following treatment. If dark spots are making you blue, you may wish to try a few home remedies to see if they help. If your spots are large or dark, talk to a qualified dermatologist about your options. You don’t need to live with embarrassing hyperpigmentation any longer!

ur feet support us every day of our lives as we walk, run and jump all over them. They bear the full weight of our bodies and the full impact of our every movement. And yet, they may be the secret to our whole-body health. If you’ve ever tried reflexology, you may have enjoyed a glimpse of the great mysteries buried within our feet. Reflexology is a non-invasive healing method that involves applying pressure points and massage to specific parts of the feet, hands and ears to subtly access the rest of the body. The aim of reflexology is to restore balance and equalize the flow of Qi. The practice follows the belief that the feet and hands hold a map of the body on their surfaces. By manipulating specific points, one can access those corresponding areas in the body. Several cultures use their own unique techniques in the art of reflexology. The philosophy, however, is very much the same, based on the premise that manipulating the foot subtly manipulates the body.

An Ancient Practice

Reflexology is an ancient healing method that dates back thousands of years. Asia, India and Egypt have a long history of using reflexology techniques for a variety of health issues. Hieroglyphs have been discovered throughout Egypt depicting the use of reflexology as a means of healing over 3000 years ago. The western advancement of reflexology began in 1913 when ear, nose and throat Doctor William H. Fitzgerald began using it on his patients to relieve pain, restore certain organ function and settle the central nervous system. It was then known as “zone therapy,” wherein Fitzgerald divided the body into 10 zones, five on each foot, which travel through the entire body. By addressing each zone at its starting point, one could relieve and treat ailments within that zone. This therapy was further studied and modified by nurse and physiotherapist Eunice Ingham, who travelled across the United States giving seminars on the subject. She mapped out the reflex points on the hands and feet. Consequently, the practice was renamed reflexology and the term continues to be used throughout North America and Europe today.

Indications for Reflexology

The benefits of reflexology vary according to the individual. They include release of tension, regulation of blood pressure and improvement of organ function by restoring blood flow. It is often used as complementary care with cancer patients to relieve pain and vomiting and aid the central nervous system in dealing with anxiety and insomnia. It is also used as complementary care for post-surgery patients to restore the natural flow of Qi and revitalize energy levels. Reflexology has also been known to aid with pregnancy, delivery and post partum emotional and physical challenges. It is safe to use on individuals of any age, including newborns, for whom it is used to ease the development of

the digestive system and encourage immune system strength by stimulating the lymphatic system. It is known to stimulate nerve function, thanks to the approximately 7,000 nerve endings in the feet, while increasing energy levels by stimulating energy pathways. Reflexology can be used as a preventative therapy by relaxing the parasympathetic nervous system, which then allows the body to relax and return to homeostasis.

Contraindications

Reflexology is generally a safe and effective practice. However, those with certain conditions are advised to avoid reflexology until they are treated or cleared by a physician or holistic practitioner. People with contagious skin diseases such as severe psoriasis or eczema should not undertake reflexology without consulting a doctor, to protect both the practitioner and client. Using reflexology on a client with phlebitis (inflammation of a vein, typically in the legs) may cause too much pressure in the veins. If you have phlebitis, consult your doctor before receiving treatment. Caution is also recommended for pregnant women in their first trimester. It is important to find a formally trained and certified reflexologist who understands all of the contraindications associated with reflexology and will assess each client properly before performing the treatment.

Over the years, many clinical trials have analyzed the effectiveness of reflexology as a medical treatment. So far, the results have been inconclusive within western medical research methodology. Though reflexology has received considerable criticism over the years, it has never been successfully proven that there are no benefits to this treatment. Many reflexologists hold the belief that reflexology is not a replacement for western medicine, but a complementary aid that can be used in conjunction with many other medical treatments. In an era of high heels, orthotics and constant stress, reflexology is a safe, effective way to allow recipients to feel relaxed, restored and grounded as they are reunited with their feet.

Vein Treatments By Dr Sachit Shah

W

e bared our legs for the summer season... but what did we do about those veins? Varicose veins affect 30 percent of men and women at some point in their lives. Varicose veins occur as a result of poor blood flow in the legs. Veins have valves that help to move blood back towards the heart. In varicose veins, these valves do not function properly, allowing the blood to pool in the legs and causing those veins to enlarge. There are many reasons why we get varicose veins, including age, pregnancy, weight gain or even genetics. Many men and women will simply live with varicose veins if the pain is not bad, but the condition can cause complications such as inflammation and ulcers, and can create a lot of fatigue in the legs. In addition, they look awful. Varicose veins will not heal themselves. Nowadays, however, there are many different treatment options available. Some veins respond better to one form of treatment than another; there is no single treatment that can universally resolve the problem. Many people ask if treatment will interfere with blood flow. After all, arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t these veins needed? The simple answer is that deeper veins do most of the work, while varicose veins are

merely a hindrance when they become a problem both in appearance and function. The body can live very well without these veins. In fact, many people feel less fatigue and swelling of the legs â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and look better, too! Varicose veins are difficult to treat through the Medical Services Plan as they are generally cosmetic in nature and coverage is limited. A recent client had been waiting for three years to be treated for varicose veins that were painful and caused problems with bending her knees and sleeping. Her only options through MSP were stripping, surgery or minor sclerotherapy, which required that she go under general anesthetic and be off work for six to eight weeks. There is now a wide variety of treatments that do not require general anesthetic or long recovery periods. SPIDER VEIN TREATMENTS There are both laser treatments and sclerotherapy or foam injections that are used for spider vein treatments. The treatments are effective. However, spider veins will typically return if the underlying problem vein is not treated. The best approach is to use ultrasound to map out the legs and identify the underlying larger vein that is causing the problem. The larger vein

can then be treated prior to treating the spider veins. SCLEROTHERAPY Sclerotherapy refers to the use of a chemical that is injected into the vein and causes the vein to inflame and close. Generally, the best form of sclerotherapy is ultrasound guided sclerotherapy, which allows the doctor to pinpoint where the problem veins are and then inject them with foam. Without ultrasound mapping, it is impossible to pinpoint which veins are the troublesome ones. This type of treatment is best for smaller varicose veins, and more than one treatment may be required during this 30-minute procedure. Compression stockings must be worn following treatment. There is a 30 percent recurrence rate after two to three years. LEG LASERS Also known as EVLT, this technique uses a very thin catheter to deliver laser energy along the offending vein. The laser energy heats the vein walls, thereby destroying them. Local anesthetic is provided along the length of the vein. Compression stockings must be worn for at least a few weeks and can help relieve swelling and aching in your legs. This technique is good


for long, straight veins, which allow the laser to pass through. There can be many days of discomfort following treatment. Similar to EVLT is the use of radiofrequency electric current. This technique is known as radiofrequency ablation. The advantage of using this technique is that there is less pain. It is good for early varicose veins but generally it is seen to be less successful than EVLT. VEIN STRIPPING Vein stripping, or ligation and stripping, is performed under a general anesthetic and involves a small incision made at the groin to expose the vein. The vein is tied and a hook-like instrument is used to remove the vein in sections through a small cut just below the knee. Although effective for treating large, lumpy veins that do not respond well to laser, this technique can be very painful with long recovery times. Newer techniques using micro-phlebectomy do not involve general anesthesia or long recovery times. In fact, you are encouraged to walk immediately after the procedure. PAINLESS REMOVAL The procedure called the Clarivein requires only a single initial injection, and is completely painless â&#x20AC;&#x201C; no need for pain relief. A rotating catheter is inserted into the vein, causing it to

collapse. The advantage of this technique is that it is painless, quick and no more than one injection is usually involved. VEIN GLUE Still in its trial stages, this technique involves injecting a medical superglue into the vein, literally sealing the vein. The treatment is still in an assessment stage, but is purported to be a relatively quick, painless procedure that may not require compression stockings following treatment. There are a number of treatments available today to effectively treat varicose veins. The most important point to remember is that no one technique is best for everyone. Consult a physician who can determine which treatment is best for you based on an ultrasound mapping of your legs.
