Joseph E. Davis – Resume

Summary The 35-year career of Joseph Davis is one of combining imaginative technical innovation with sound business practices to invent new products and develop new companies. His areas of specialization have included wavelength selective switches, tunable lasers, and combinations of magnetic and optical disk drives, as well as such related technologies as optical switches, micro-optics, and micro-machining. Throughout his career Joe has also made significant contributions to the community through community service activities in various organizations. Education Joe received his BS in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Southern California. He received his MS and Ph.D. degrees in aeronautics, with a Ph.D. minor in business economics, from the California Institute of Technology Work History Joe co-founded Capella Photonics Inc. in 1999. He served as its CEO from 2000-2004, and subsequently as its Chairman until his retirement in 2008 and was the co-inventor of a wavelength-selective switch that increased internet speeds to enable streaming video for the first time. Joe still consults part-time for the company on patent matters and in a patent infringement law suit. Capella’s operations were sold to Alcatel-Lucent in 2013 but it retains its intellectual property. In 1996, Joe co-founded Quinta Corporation and served as its Vice President of Product Development, where he co-invented a multi-disk data-storage device that combined the best features of magnetic and optical technologies. Quinta was sold to Seagate in 1997. In 1990, Joe co-founded Iota Memories which developed a 2.5 inch removable magnetic disk drive and was sold to SyQuest Inc. in 1991. Joe has also held senior executive positions at Maxtor, Seagate, and SyQuest. He holds 35 U.S. and foreign patents in fields including optical subsystems, MEMS devices, removable magnetic data storage, and magneto-optical data storage, and is the author of publications in several fields. Community Service Since March 2014, Joe has been a volunteer at the Gilroy Compassion Center (GCC). He has been co-funding a camping program for the homeless, and co-designed a microhouse on wheels for the homeless and convinced the Santa Clara County Housing Department to fund the first prototype (which is now complete). He has also been heavily involved in a partnership between GCC and the San Jose State University Engineering Department to build a mobile shower/laundry for the homeless (which is also nearly complete). In addition, Joe has been involved in the establishment of a Safe Park in Morgan Hill for homeless families living in automobiles and RVs. He has also been a strong vocal advocate for a legal campground for the homeless in Santa Clara County by lobbying and making presentations to the county Board of Supervisors, the county Housing Task Force, and the Santa Clara Valley Water District. In part, due to his efforts, the county made the decision to develop a pilot campground and tiny homes village consisting of microhouses, and an overnight parking area for the homeless. Joe also served for 12 years (1996-2008) on the Board of Directors of the Our Lady of Fatima
