What does traveling mean to you? Is it taking the bus to a different city every day or is it a weekend trip or is jet lag or is it reading a book while getting a foot massage? In the 21- century traveling is a business. In 2018, 710 million visitors toured Europe. That is 9,2% of the whole world’s population. Tourism is not only a big business but also a huge trend in modern society. Bloggers like Drew Binsky or Yvonne Pferrer make their money by documenting an posting about their traveling. They have 375 thousand (Drew Binsky) and 1,1 million (Yvonne Pferrer) followers while a regular person has 200 - 600 followers. Society is not just interested in those travel bloggers but people want to be like them. People thrive on likes and there are even multiple websites that tell users where to travel to get the best pictures for their Instagram account. (Mass) tourism is omnipresent and the social trend of traveling supports it. The perfect example for mass tourism is the Spanish island Mallorca and the Dutch capital city Amsterdam. There were 4,5 million Germans traveling to Mallorca in 2017. Mallorca itself has only 630.000 citizens. Due to tourism Mallorca inhabits seven times more people than regularly. Not only the locals but also the island suffers under those masses. In the city of Amsterdam, locals can not get a reasonably priced apartment anymore, because professional businesses rented out the central apartments to sub rent to tourists. Yes, Amsterdam is worth seeing and experiencing. Yes, it appealing to not do anything besides the pool in a four-star hotel on Mallorca but do we really want to be responsible for locals felling pushed out of their own home and for the destruction of an island? We believe that there is a more original and unique way to travel. We would like to take you on unique journeys that you will remember all your life. We want to show you unique companies and initiatives for your traveling all over the world. We support a responsible way of traveling and visiting. Considering the many alternatives that also come with the 21.- century and its trends and technology our vision of a unique and responsible way of traveling is certainly possible. With this edition we will take you to unique and magical places all over the world.

Gain creators

Products and services For a good overview of what a value proposition is, you need to understand the basics of the concept. Value proposition consists of three segments that are intertwined with each other. The first is products and services. Ask yourself what kind of products and services you offer to help the customers get either an emotional, functional or social job done. Rank all products and services according to how important they are for your customer. How important are these factors really to them and why?

At last there are the gain creators. Here we describe how your products and services can benefit your customers mentally and physically. Satisfied customers tend to spend more than unsatisfied customers. Try to create outcomes that your customer expects, or even go beyond their expectations and really outdo yourself.

Pain relievers Next up are the pain relievers. Outline how your products and services are valuable to the customer. What can you do to ease the customers pains? There are different factors that can affect the customers feelings. You can, for example, produce savings by creating discounts, make them feel better by assisting them in their search, put an end to difficulties and challenges your customers encounter, wipe out negative social consequences your customers faces or fears etc. Rank them. Rank each pain your products and services kill according to their intensity for your customer. Is it very intense or very light? For each pain indicate how often it occurs. This way you can eliminate negative emotions the customer might experience.

Satisfy your customers There are a lot of factors that can influence the customers well-being, If the customer is getting satisfied by visiting your enterprise through your good efforts, you are doing a good job. By making them as comfortable as possible, the chances of them spending more will increase. This all can be achieved through spending time in researching what the customer pains are and eliminating them, as well as studying how some factors actually relieve the customer pains and exploiting these pain relievers.

Coolhunting as a research method If you are being asked to name a few big, well known and successful companies, the chances are that most, or even all of them make use of the research method ´coolhunting`. This is a more important way of researching then you would probably think. Once a company is successful, the main goal of a company has shifted from `getting successful´ to ´staying successful´, getting successful is at this point less important than maintaining the achieved success. Keeping customers by staying on-trend is what it is about.

Research methods Research methods are used in order to discover new information or create better understanding of a subject. This is a strategy, process or technique which utilizes everything necessary to do analysis. Coolhunting is such research method, which entails making observations and predictions. This is part of the search for cutting-edge trends. The knowledge that is gained from this is to benefit from as a company, organisation or initiative.

Application internal markets For the internal application of coolhunting, you can hang on to the same concepts as the external application. This will also bring innovation to improve a company’s performance, efficiency and creativity.

Example For example is one trend that multiple companies use nowadays was created by Google. Google gives their employees a day a week to be creative together and not focusses on other work. This way they get other insights and new ideas. The other companies took this over from Google through Coolhunting. This is an external application. Coolhunting is very broad and has many opportunities for companies, making use of the research method ‘coolhunting’ is likely to be rewarded with beneficial outcomes.

The two main applications for coolhunting are; watching external markets and unleashing internal innovation.

Application external markets To detect new trends and trendsetters you can utilize coolhunting to external markets. This is in particular beneficial to financial analysts, for market forces, consumer buying patterns and market trends to make better informed investment decisions and find new investment opportunities TOURISM MAGAZINE

FIGHTING POVERTY WITH JEWELRY

Fair-trade jewelry at SOKO Kenya When traveling through Africa, buying the cultural handy crafts of the particular areas is a really important activity. These souvenirs are often fabrics, clothes or jewelry because these objects are characteristic for the countries that has been visited. Because of the growing interest for fair-trade projects, SOKO from Kenya thought about a way to create fair-trade, but typical African jewelry. SOKO was set up in 2009 by Joanna Maiden. All the jewelry SOKO sells are handmade and 22% of the retained revenue goes directly to the Artisans.

SOKOs initiative Even though the artisan craft sector is the second-largest employer in our developing world, it is also one of the hardest sectors to work in. A lot of individual artisans are stuck in the micro-economics of their own countries and are having a hard time to earn enough money to feed their families. People who work for SOKO earn five times more than people who work for an average artisan shop in Kenya; this makes SOKO a really outstanding and cool project. It is a unique organization that brings tourism and word development together. By giving more back to inhabitants of the third world countries, poverty will be reduced in the coming decades.

Poverty is still one of the biggest problems worldwide, so SOKO thinks it is a really important thing to work on.

A unique project As SOKO claims, people can help to improve the world by buying SOKOs products because these buyers will help Kenyan artisans to be able to feed their families. To prove that SOKO is an organization who is threating their employees right, they are B-Corp Certified. A B-Corp is an abbreviation for Benefit Corporation. This means that next to making a profit, the company has to focus on improving the state of general health or the environment. The quote of B-Corp is : ‘Using business as a force for good’. To be even more involved with helping the environment, all employees of SOKO use mobile phones to communicate. By communication through electronic devices, a lot of paper will be saved and the communication will be a lot easier. This is the reason why all mobile phones used by the artisans are provided by SOKO. For travelers who are planning on visiting Kenya, it is a great opportunity to visit one of the Artisans who are working for SOKO. You will get a little insight on how handmade jewelry is made and how these artisans live. The artisans will be really happy to explain their work and even teach you some small tips and tricks on making typical African jewelry.

ONCE UPON A TIME, IT STARTED RAINING INSIDE

Star attraction The ”rain vortex jewel” at Changi airport in Singapore is the biggest indoor waterfall in the world. It is the star attraction of the airport. This unique project is one of the most Instagrammed places of the world. The jewel has 10 stories and is 40 meters tall. It cascades from an oculus in the mega structure’s roof, whereupon it will stream down. The the rain-vortex refers to the vortex-shaped roof and the glass that makes it a ‘jewel’. It is designed by the renowned architect Moshe Safdie.

A dream come true When visitors enter the jewel, they might feel like they are dreaming. It is such an astonishing sight that completely overwhelms its viewers. The $1.25 billion project has done what no other buildings have done before, making the airport the destination. The jewel has a lot to offer. There are over 280 shops plus food and beverage stops. Each year there are over 66 million travelers going through Changi airport and this number is growing.

Big yellow taxi The purpose of the rain vortex jewel is to show a little bit of what Singapore has to offer at the airport so that visitors might decide to visit the city of Singapore in the future. The backstory behind this project originated from Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi”. Only this time in reverse. The Changi airport group transformed a parking lot into an indoor wonder, ‘project jewel’ as it was called at first, took over four years to construct. The rain vortex jewel is not only for travelers that visit the airport, but also for locals. People do not need a flight ticket to get through the customs and admire it. It is open for everybody and costs around $35 entrance. Changi airport is only 30 minutes away from the central business district. This causes that locals will travel to the airport to check out the jewel and perhaps catch a movie or go out for dinner.

This is because the Singapore government promotes the use of sustainable and recycled items and even gives out a bigger budget because of this. The jewel has been nominated for the 2019 world architecture festival. As the world’s biggest architecture awards program. Surrounding the jewel are even more uncommon sights to see. The jewel has multiple gardens surrounding it and inside the vortex is also a botanical garden to lay your eyes on. The airport itself contains a butterfly garden, cactus garden and a sunflower garden. The rain vortex is one of the most beautiful projects of the decade and will accumulate millions of visitors in the coming years. Therefore, some people see it as the latest world wonder and it certainly has earned its name.

FEEL THE RUSH AT “CHAP” Excitement, adventure and chocolate, it is like all you need on a vacation. In the Philippines this is what you get when you go to The Chocolate Hills adventure park.

Location The Chocolate Hills adventure park is located -as its name suggests- in the Chocolate Hills on the island Bohol, one of the islands of the Philippines. The Hills are the main attraction of the island. This is mainly because the fifty square kilometre area looks, in dry seasons, like it is covered with chocolate mountains. The park is an eco-tourism adventure park and has 30 activities for adults and children. With the most popular one: The ‘Rush Zipline’. The zipline is 550 meters long and almost 46 meters above the ground. You can ride the bike over the line all across to the other side. The bike is attached to the line and the person riding the bike is attached to another line to ensure the person’s safety. A quite similar, and also very popular attraction is “The Wave Runner Surf Zipline”. The first and only surfing zipline in Asia and maybe even in the world. Doing this is like surfing in the air on a hight of 70 meters. Other attractions the adventure park has are four ‘tree- top rope challenges’, mountain biking, horseback riding, a eco-hiking trail. It also provides the opportunities for weddings, conferences and teambuilding activities. It is original for its location and because it is not centred on water amusement, which is common in the Philippines. There is also no theme, besides only having adventurous activities. This makes it unique compared to other parks in the surrounding islands of the Philippines.

Cool and unique On the island are many sights, for example a forest, a museum and churches. But not many active activities to participate in. The park does have this to offer, which makes it unique. The cool aspect of the park is the amount of opportunities that it offers and the fact that it is possible for both, adults and children, to enjoy the park. The location and the exclusive attractions contribute as well of course.

Success The success of the park is defined by people who search for adventure, beautiful locations, ´Instagram-worthy’ places and a balance between rest and active activities while on vacation. These trends have a positive effect on the park its success story.

A review Reading and learning about the success of the park is useful of course but the opinions and experiences customers make are even more representative for what the park is special for. Looking for reviews this is what you can expect: “…After dismounting, the guide turns your bike in the direction where you came from… back to the start station. This time, I was thinking that maybe I can let go of the handle bars and spread my arms while in middle of the track. It was a difficult decision to make and I still had a deathly grip on the bars. No letting go! But this time, managed to smile and enjoy the ride back.” This is only one of the many positive reviews. This shows the good concept of the park and that customers enjoy their experience, which is most important.

SPYING ON Who would not want to be like James Bond once in a while? Successfully fighting the bad guys in the world, while looking flawless in a designer suit and by the way having a hot love affair.

THE BUSINESS Guys like Ross Buchanan from Black Kilt Tours made that possible. Ross was a one-man business located in Edinburg, Scotland. Due to the Brexit he chose to retire early and move to France. But this is not supposed to be a sad Brexit- story but a window to Scotlands fantastic fantasy world. Active hiking tours, day tours, high land tours or “gay Scotland”- tours, Ross offered them all. But what does the guy in the black kilt has to do with the agent in the black suit? You may have guessed it by now. Ross could also take you on a tour following 007. You could not only follow James Bond with him though. Scotland is home to many many film sets just as Outlander, Harry Potter, World War Z, the Cloud Atlas or Black Angel. Also a part of the hype series Game of Thrones was shot in Scotland. The castle of ”Winterfell“ is really called ”Doune Castel” and is located one and a half hours north of Edinburg.

With Scotland providing the incredible visuals and Ross telling the stories, his tours are really ’cool’. Although, in consideration of his retirement Ross’ business is not future proof. His business idea, however, is future proof. Since screen entertainment is a big development and the base for many trends and hypes the movie set tours are a modern and interesting way of discovering a country. Not only the movie set tours are zeitgeisty but Ross’ tours also meet recent social movements and changes. He offers ’gay-orientedd’ city tours where he includes bars, clubs or organizations and also informs about ’gay- friendly’ hotels and businesses. Scotland is the best country in Europe for LGBT legal equality. Knowing that, it is save to say that Ross manages to pick up on trends. James Bond can probably not be called a trend anymore after 24 released movies and a total earning of $16.4 billion the men in the black suit became cult. Still, it is undeniable that the tough agent is a fascination for all generations. So next time you go on holiday in Scotland keep your eyes open for 007 because he may be not as far as you think.

Getting Down to the Theory Through Ross’ tours, tourists would get the opportunity to escape real life. If your daily life is way too real sometimes and you wanted to go back to the fairy tale world from when you were a child, Scotland itself invites you to dream, and Ross would take you for a dip into the mysteries, Scotland is so famous for. The site is made for people who are interested in knowing what the B Corp contains and why it exists. This article about B Corp is really easy to use because it is written in a clear language.
