Huntington

.....................................................................

Are you looking for charming small-town hospitality or a vibrant college town with top-notch attractions, restaurants, shopping and culture? Would you rather escape to a picturesque river city with parks and tree-lined streets or head to the heart of a Tri-State Area offering so much to see and do? Huntington offers all of this and more! Start your visit downtown, where longtime and contemporary local shops and restaurants are situated alongside – and often inside – historic buildings, evoking fond memories of a simpler time. Enjoy a movie, outdoor concert or dinner at Pullman Square, a lively retail, dining and entertainment complex. Marvel at locally made arts, crafts, food and souvenirs at The Red Caboose in nearby Heritage Station, a restored train depot-turned-shoppingvillage that also houses the city’s Visitors Center. Just a few blocks away, explore the close-knit campus of Marshall University, where the tragic 1970 loss of the school’s entire football team inspired the uplifting Hollywood film We Are Marshall, starring Matthew McConaughey. For timeless family fun, tour turn-of-the-century Heritage Farm Museum & Village, walk the midway at Camden Park and dig in at Jim’s Steak & Spaghetti House where pasta is served with a side of nostalgia. You’ll enjoy a soul-satisfying slice of Americana that’s getting harder to find these days. No matter what time of year you visit, a full lineup of festivals, concerts and cultural events invites visitors to kick up their heels with the locals. And once you’ve been captivated by this charming river city, Huntington makes a great base to explore the hidden gems of its neighboring communities …

Barboursville

.....................................................................

With its quintessential Main Street on one end of town and the bustling Huntington Mall – West Virginia’s largest – on the other, the village of Barboursville offers divine dining, specialty shopping and a storied heritage in diverse surroundings. Soak up small-town ambiance as you stroll past the cafés, boutiques and historic buildings that line Barboursville’s charming streets. Or shop ‘til you drop at the more than 150 stores, restaurants and entertainment offerings that make up the newly renovated Huntington Mall. Find that

Milton

.....................................................................

Just minutes from Huntington, the town of Milton packs lots to see and do in an appealing little package. Browse through shops selling antiques, crafts and primitives, and see for yourself why the newly rebuilt Milton Flea Market has become a regional draw for handmade furniture and rare finds. Don’t miss the nearby Blenko Glass Factory and Visitor Center – where you can pick up a new family heirloom from its beautiful selection of its historic, handcrafted glass – and then relax at any of several small parks which offer year-round reflection and recreation. And this small town knows how to throw a party, too. In addition to seasonal Fourth of July and Christmas celebrations, the popular Cabell County Fair and activity-packed West Virginia Pumpkin Festival draw thousands of festival-goers each year.

Rocco's Ristorante

.....................................................................

Since 1977, Rocco Muriale and "Rocco's" has been on a first-name basis with connoisseurs of authentic Italian cuisine. Based out of an intimate restaurant at 252 West Main St. in Ceredo, Muriale, also an accomplished saxophone player, has been making sweet music in the kitchen with an extensive pasta-based menu and wine list, served in a romantic setting that has drawn the attention of everyone from The Food Network to regulars who drive from all over the Tri-State region. Rocco's, whose theme is "where dining is an event, not just a meal," is best known for his lasagna. Although boasting a deep pasta menu including spinach ravioli, rigatoni and capelli marinara, they also have such specialties as chicken parmigiano, lobster langostino, sea scallops marinara, as well as appetizers, salads and desserts. Roccos is open for dinner on Sundays and Tuesday through Thursday. On Friday and Saturday hours are expanded. No reservations accepted. Cash and credit cards are accepted. For takeout or catering call 304.453.3000. For a lunch-time taste of Rocco's in downtown, stop by Rocco's Little Italy, 345 4th Ave., Huntington, Monday through Saturday. Call 304.529.2400. www.roccosristorante.com.

Central City Cafe

........................................

Nestled in one of West Virginia's largest antique districts, the Central City Cafe, at 529 West 14th St., is one of the west end’s most popular eateries. In April 2009, the Café received national attention when Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives featured the restaurant, which specializes in homemade soups, sandwiches, and desserts. The Cafe is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday and also does catering. Cash, check and all major credit cards are accepted. Call 304.522.6142. Be sure and check out the antique shops along 14th Street West, and if you're up to it, you can see where your bread was made since the Cafe's neighbor is Heiner's Bakery, one of the region's largest commercial bread makers. Heiner’s offers free tours Wednesdays at 8:30 by advance appointment. Go online at www.heinersbakery.com.

Frostop Drive-In

.....................................................................

Once a national chain, only a handful of classic Frostop Drive-Ins remain. Located at 1449 Hal Greer Blvd., across from Cabell-Huntington Hospital, Frostop, with its trademark swirling root beer mug on the roof, is straight out of the 1950s. Car hops bring frosty mugs of root beer to wash down a variety of sandwiches, including hamburgers, grilled chicken, bar-b-que, and many other items. Frostop also serves old-fashioned chocolate malts as well as root beer floats and other ice cream treats. Rupert McGinnis and his uncle William Warnock opened the drive-in on May 29, 1959, and McGinnis' daughters, Marilyn Murdock and Bing Murphey, still own it. Frostop is open daily for lunch and dinner. Cash and credit cards are accepted. Call 304.523.6851.

Marshall University graduate Michael Bowe opened Huntington Prime, 910 Fourth Ave., in the West Virginia Building in early 2010. Bowe, who was the head chef at the Tri-State Racetrack & Gaming Center and who is certified by the American Culinary Federation, brings a fresh flair to Fourth Avenue. Prime serves dishes with a local flare such as the Wilson Mills Rainbow Trout from Bluefield, W.Va. and Gardner's Farm Lamb Shank from Waverly, W.Va. They also offer artisan bread, soup and salad bar, an extensive wine menu, a delicious Sunday brunch and a different locallymade cake or pie daily. Huntington Prime is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday, with later hours on the weekends, and Sunday brunch from 11am2pm. Huntington Prime Penthouse & Piano Bar is also open to the public as well as providing space for meetings, showers and small gatherings. Cash and credit cards accepted. They offer catering as well. Jim's Steak and Spaghetti House

.....................................................................

In 1938, Jimmie Carder's father, Jim Tweel, opened what has become one of the most famous restaurants in the region, Jim's Steak and Spaghetti House at 920 Fifth Ave. in Huntington. Jim's has served celebrities such as Muhammad Ali, Evel Knievel, and Dustin Hoffman. A variety of presidents have eaten at Jim’s, including George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and JFK, who ate at Jim's during his successful 1960s Presidential campaign. While it's not easy to score the "Kennedy Booth" where JFK dined, you'll get Kennedy-level service anywhere in Jim's. Smiling waitresses in white-starched uniforms fly by you with fast and friendly service straight out of the '60s, bringing reasonably-priced diner dishes that range from burgers and fried haddock to their famous dinners of spaghetti and rib eye steak. Jim's is open Tuesday through Saturday. Note that Jim's accepts cash and checks only - they do not accept credit cards. You can buy pint and quart-sized containers of Jim's famous sauce to go. Call 304.696.9788.

21 At The Frederick

.....................................................................

Built in 1906, the Edwardian Renaissance-style Frederick Hotel at the corner of Fourth Avenue and 10th Street, has always been a hot-spot for fine dining. Tucked inside the historic Frederick Building, 21 At The Frederick offers a fresh, diverse variety of Asian, Italian, Greek and American dishes with the option of three-course meals and a full wine list. Be sure to save room for their almost famous souffles, raspberry or chocolate and take a minute and browse the lobby of the Frederick where Warner Brothers taped part of the We Are Marshall movie. 21 at the Frederick, 940 4th Ave., is open for dinner Wednesdays - Saturdays and sometimes until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Cash and all major credit/debit cards are accepted. Walk-ins and reservations are accepted. The restaurant also caters on and off premise. Call 304.529.0222.

As sweet and refreshing as magnolia blossoms, Savannah's, located at 1208 6th Ave., Huntington, has been one of the state's most elegant eating establishments this side of the Greenbrier since 1997. Inspired by the homey yet fine dining of the South, Ava and John Bicknell transformed a historic 1903 home into Savannah's, which is open Tuesday through Saturday for dinner. In 2003, they bought the house next door and added a hip little Bistro as well as the Magnolia Room for private parties and large groups. The Bistro opens at 5 p.m. with a full bar and lowerpriced menu than the restaurant. Since 1999, the restaurant has been given the prestigious "Award of Excellence" from Wine Spectator Magazine. Given the Five Diamond Award of Excellence by the North American Restaurant Association, Savannah's menu is seasonal and features weekend specials that range from seafood and rack of lamb to vegetarian options. Reservations are encouraged for restaurant and the Magnolia Room. Cash and credit cards accepted. Call 304.529.0919 or go online at www.savannahsmenu.com.

.....................................................................

Opened in August 2007, Clint Artrip has built a loyal following to his restaurant and sports bar. Fat Patty's is armed with a bevy of burgers – any way you can imagine. There is the Vampire Killer (loaded with garlic, of course), the Lava Patty (topped with grilled jalapenos, hot cayenne cheese and plenty of spice) and tons of others. There's also a Not-So-Cow veggie burger, an Asian teriyaki chicken salad and several healthy wrap options. In 2010, USA Today named Fat Patty's one of the "51 Great Burger Joints" in the country. Fat Patty’s is located near Marshall University's campus at 1935 Third Ave., Huntington. Fat Patty's is open daily, lunch to late (1 a.m.). Cash and credit cards are accepted. They also cater. Huntington's East End Bridge

.....................................................................

Opened to traffic in August of 1985 after more than 20 years of planning and designing and nearly 10 years of construction efforts. It was built utilizing a distinctive asymmetrical cable-stayed girder design. The bridge spans the Ohio River. It is only the third of its kind in the United States. The bridge’s segments were placed together piece by piece. The segments, which weighed roughly 200 tons, were hoisted by a crane and joined to a 360 foot A shaped concrete tower already in the river.

Keith-Albee Theater

Located in downtown Huntington at 925 Fourth Ave. When the heavy polished brass doors opened for the first time in 1928, the main attraction was screen star Reginald Denny in the film Good Morning Judge and the theater was second in size only to the Roxy Theater in New York City. Composed of Baroque and Renaissance elements, the building is one of the most unique and ornate structures in the Tri-State. The stage is framed by a giant golden stage curtain and the ceiling is studded with stars and clouds. Today the Keith Albee is home to the Marshall Artists Series, bringing top name entertainment to the city.
