MONTGOMERY FIELD TRIP PREPRESENTATIVE DEMARCO LET US VOTE ON A BILL IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. WE VOTED TO MAKE THE SCHOOL YEAR SHORTER!

It’s been a busy fall in fifth grade! We had a wonderful day in Montgomery! We learned a lot about the way that our state government works and a we learned about the history of our state. A special thanks to our chaperones, they did a great job!

Our next field trip will be to Dauphin Island, Dec. 1-2. While we are there we will learn about ecosystems and about human impact on the oceans. An information packet was sent home Oct. 14th.More specific information will follow a few weeks before the trip.

On October 29th, we will have Halloween rotations.The students will participate in Halloween-themed science and language arts activities. Please send newspaper (if you subscribe) and one empty water bottle to school by 10/28 for our activity.

Math

We are continuing our unit on mysteries. Each child is expected to read two mysteries by the end of the month. We are also completing various reading responses and learning new vocabulary words that are usually found in mysteries. Our foci in this unit are making inferences, noticing important details,and putting together clues in order to draw conclusions. These are very important reading skills.

We are learning about adverbs this week and will continue to work on them for a couple of weeks. We are also writing minimysteries based on the pictures in the book The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris

We are currently investigating concepts relating to 3 dimensional geometry including measuring volume. I have been very impressed with the level of thinking that has been evidenced by this class. They really love math! We have a student teacher in our classroom observing math two days per week. She will be teaching a few math lessons in November. Her name is Kaitlyn White.

Van Alsburg. Science We began a unit on Physical and Chemical change today. We will be doing lots of really interesting and fun experiments as we learn about what matter is, what it is made of and how it can change.
