The Crowborough Magazine • September/October 2019

Note from the Editor... Dear Readers, Welcome to issue 87 of The Crowborough Magazine, another busy issue to bring you all the latest events taking place in and around the area. Don’t forget that if you are organising any local community event, you can publicise it for free in the What’s On pages of the relevant issue. I’m always delighted to hear from you and help support your events. Over 11,000 copies are distributed by Royal Mail direct through doors so it’s a great way to raise awareness of what you are doing. As well as free content for not-for-profit groups in the magazine, I also give discounted advertising to the same groups as well. I had a very interesting meeting with one of the volunteers at Clued-up.Info on the high street last month. The work they do to support the young people in the Crowborough area is wonderful and I was amazed as to the wide range of advice they are able to access to help their clients. You can read more detail about the services they offer on page 22 of this issue. As with any charity they really are in need of more volunteer support so perhaps this could be something you’d like to get involved in for the benefit of the town’s younger population. I want to take this opportunity to let you know that the landline number for the business will shortly be unavailable as I am in the process of moving my office to a new location where there is no landline. I’ve been amazed to learn about all the alternative options for receiving fast broadband without a direct phone line and would like to give a shout out to JK Comms Ltd (www.jkcomms.com) for looking into this and sorting out for me. In this day and age the importance of having a landline for businesses is not the same as it was even a few years back. So, if you wish to speak to me about getting content into the magazine or advertising, please call on mobile (listed below) or drop me an email. As always, please do mention ‘The Crowborough Magazine’ if you are responding to anything you’ve seen in this publication as it helps to secure it’s future. The next deadline is Friday 4th October for the November/December issue which will be distributed during the last week of October. Until next time...

Why advertise in The Crowborough Magazine Why advertise your business in The Crowborough Magazine? Quite simply, it works for the majority of businesses you see featured each issue, many of who have been advertising for years! If you want to build your local customer base, increase your profits and make sure the local community knows about your business, advertising in this magazine can really help. The Crowborough Magazine attracts both large and small businesses who want to promote their services locally, with costs kept low to offer excellent value advertising. Smaller businesses, especially those without a ‘shop front’, can promote their services in a quality publication to the people who want to use them.

There are some great reasons to give it a go! Targeted audience: The magazine is delivered to over 11,000 homes and businesses in the TN6 area by Royal Mail every other month. Great value: Prices are kept low so that small businesses can make the most of their advertising budget and appear over a number of issues. It’s a fact that a sustained campaign works better at increasing sales than a one-off advert. All advertisers featured in each issue are listed on the magazine’s website - www.crowborough-magazine.co.uk - giving your business even more exposure. Good Service: From your initial enquiry, we will help you choose the best advertising package for your business according to your budget. We will make sure you have an eye-catching advert with a clear message about your business. Results: We want your advertising to work for you and we will do our best to make sure you get the most out of your campaign. About 80% of the businesses featured in this magazine are repeat advertisers! A good read: The magazine contains interesting local articles, useful information and listings of local events alongside the business advertising. Residents hold onto the magazines until the next issue arrives so that your advert is seen again and again. It’s been around since 2006 and is a well established part of every household.

supporting young people aged 11-25 Crowborough’s support service for young people, Clued-up.Info, is based in the high street and provides a drop-in service for young people looking for advice and support - almost like a Citizen’s Advice for young people but operating under different guidance.

looking for your help! In particular, assistance with marketing, publicity and promotion of the service in the local area is much needed, as well as a revamp of the website which needs major updating to reflect the organisation as it is now.

Clued-up.Info is a charity and it relies heavily on funding to keep it running, as well as the help of volunteers supporting the operations side of the charity.

The youth workers currently use a large paper file to access the relevant information and contact details they have in order to support the clients that come in to use the service. To bring the system up-to-date, support is needed to turn this into an electronic document which will make it easier to search for the information required.

There are many reasons why young people visit the drop-in service and the youth workers there have a huge amount of information available at their finger tips to be able to help and point the young person in need to find a solution to their issue. In an extreme case, someone may have found themselves kicked out of home and require shelter and depending on their age, the team would be able to set them on the right path to getting help. A subject which is in the news frequently at the moment is about emotional and mental health and in young people this can lead to self harm, anxiety issues and much more. Other common issues the team are used to dealing with are those around drugs, relationship issues, sexual health (contraceptives, pregnancy tests and STD tests are also made available), money, employment, education and health issues. If the team are unable to help with a particular matter, they will research for the support that is required.

Of course other help would also be greatly appreciated such as that of form filling for funding - if any readers have experience in this area, the team would love to hear from you. They can be contacted at 01892 661 990 or email cluedupinfo@gmail.com. The Clued-up.Info team are also delighted that one of their previous service users, Jenni Andrews , is fundraising for the charity by doing a skydive in October. If you’d like to donate to her skydive, you can find her sponsorship page on go fund me.

Over the last few years, the team has been working hard to keep the funding coming in for this service to continue (it has experienced some rough patches in the past but now is on the up). However, the volunteer team are in much need of additional support and are 22 | www.crowborough-magazine.co.uk • info@crowborough-magazine.co.uk
