Do you need legal advice or court representation in any of these areas?  Divorce and financial arrangements including non-married couples (i.e. who gets what - house, car, money etc.)  Contact and residence of children  Business disputes  Contested wills and estates Are you worried about the cost of using solicitors? If your answer is YES then you really should speak to me. I am passionate about helping people get expert legal advice and representation that is cost-effective, reliable and excellent value. If you are going through a divorce or a non-married relationship breakdown, make sure you get your fair share of the family assets – don’t be ripped off by your ex-partner. Get expert advice and representation that will cost you less than a solicitor will cost you. This is where I help you – by arranging for a senior family law Barrister to fight your corner. Without exception my clients have benefited by coming to me. I have helped people in and around the area significantly reduce their legal costs by arranging for them to be represented directly by a Barrister. Cases have included divorce and matrimonial finance, contact and residence of children, contractual disputes and contesting wills. Speaking to me costs nothing but I could end up saving you thousands! Call me, Russell Burton-Lawrence - The Barrister Broker, on 01732 866 562 or 07971 285 796 and let me help you reduce your legal costs.

Editor’s Note

January/February 2015  The Crowborough Directory

Dear Readers,

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope you all enjoyed the festivities (or maybe you still are) and you’re now raring to go in 2015. It was fantastic to see so many people out for the Christmas Light Switch On - the Town Council do a fantastic job organising the event every year and I do love the High Street festive lights. As always, I’m writing my New Year Editor’s Note before Christmas has even taken place and until this issue is signed off with my printer only then will I think about Christmas shopping, putting up the tree...and of course enjoying all the festive spirit.

The prize crossword in the last issue generated the most amount of entries I think I’ve ever received for a crossword since I started the magazine in 2006. I had some feedback that the crossword was easier than normal although I wouldn’t know as I’m really no good at crosswords at all. Have a go at this issue’s prize crossword and you will be in with a chance of winning some fabulous metallic temporary tattoo’s from Streak, a business my young, entrepreneurial cousin has recently launched. I think they look very elegant and stylish and soon everyone across the country will be ‘streaking’ when they go out! Well done Ella. I’m also pleased to announce that the Chamber of Commerce will be running their first Business Expo at the Crowborough Community Centre on Tuesday 3rd March. Of course I will be taking a stand at this event and I really look forward to meeting you so please come along and visit. You can read more about the event on page 28. One thing I really want to push with this magazine this year is the fact that I have pages for local community groups and organisations to promote their events and also themselves with the Events and Community Pages. I sometimes feel these are so under utilised and I’m sure there’s a lot more going on than what I feature in the magazine. These pages are FREE and there to support the community and getting information on them is easy. Simply email or call me (details at the bottom of this page) and let me have the relevant information. The copy deadlines for 2015 are:

Of course if you run a business in the local area then advertising is easy too. Just give me a call or drop me an email and we can get you in here. I don’t have a sales team so you’ll never receive any sales calls so it’s up to you to get in touch with me.

I’ve also just heard that there are two new residents to welcome to Crowborough - Roseanne and Rob Browning who have moved up from Edenbridge. At least they still get to read one of my publications as the only other magazine I produce is The Edenbridge Directory! On a final note, I was sad to hear about the passing of local resident and businessman, Tom Korteweg (R&D Training). Tom contributed a great deal of time and energy into the local community and was always full of ideas and suggestions relating to a wide range of things, including this magazine. My thoughts and sympathies go out to his family. (Picture courtesy of Roger Bloxham.) As usual, don’t forget to mention The Crowborough Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps to secure it’s future. Happy 2015!

January/February 2015  The Crowborough Directory

The Powdermill Trust for Nature Conservation The Trust is looking for someone to manage it’s eleven acre site on the edge of Rotherfield Village from April 2015. The position is voluntary and will suit someone who has a love of the countryside and the natural environment. The Reserve consists of approximately 80 per cent ancient woodland (believed to be over 500 years old) and approximately 20 per cent wildflower meadows which contain a rich variety of indigenous Flora and Fauna. There is a band of willing volunteers who currently meet on the first Tuesday and third Sunday of each month who expertly complete the tasks, when required. The main annual tasks (carried out by the volunteers or by contractors) consists of: Maintaining paths, fences, clearing brambles and the occasional fallen tree, mowing the flower meadows in late Autumn to encourage wild flower growth and to keep a balance between lightly managed land and wild environment. The Powdermill Trust was founded in 1980 with the objective “To preserve wildlife sites, the habitats of Flora and Fauna of East Sussex.” Membership is currently around 180. The Trust is a limited company and registered Charity and is run by a board of Trustees who offer help and advice, when required. The Trust also rents a three acre wetland site at Powdermill Wood near Battle and oversees the Crowhurst Nature reserve in conjunction with The Crowhurst Society. These sites are independently managed. If anyone would like to see what is involved and would like a conducted tour of the site or visit on a work day between 10am to 3pm- ish. The Barrister Broker - reducing your legal costs Merry Christmas Happy New Year!

and

We now live in a digital age with the internet an invaluable information resource tool as expertise and knowledge is widely shared and easily accessible across the web. Whatever subject takes your interest there is a mass of free information available online. Take legal issues as an example. We can now learn from the numerous legal “DIY” websites that are only a few clicks away, enabling us to become empowered to deal with legal issues ourselves rather than engage legal representation. This might explain the increase the courts are seeing in the “litigant in person” - the term used by the courts to describe someone who does not have a solicitor acting for them. Whilst money can be saved by not using a lawyer, I recently read that senior judges have expressed concern that litigants in person are losing winnable cases because they do not have legal representation. The message here is that should DIY go wrong it can put you in a worse position than which you started, especially if you get hit with the other side’s costs!

individuals and businesses take control of their legal issues by arranging experienced Barristers to provide expert legal advice and representation in court. My direct route to Barristers removes any need for a solicitor resulting in huge savings for the client. This is the middle ground. My clients are litigants in person but don’t represent themselves – instead they use a Barrister to help them with their legal issue, whether that is advising on the law, determining strategy, drafting legal documents, writing letters or representing them in court. I have had many clients over the past 18 months who, in my view, represent the new breed of litigant in person – empowered; self-directed; efficient; keen to do as much as they can; cost conscious but realistic enough to recognise the benefits of investing in a legal expert’s help; determined not to use solicitors. People want to avoid overspending on legal matters. Legal costs are an overhead to be monitored, managed and trimmed. In my world, clients use the direct services of Barristers to help them resolve their legal issues as quickly and cost-effectively as possible. Divorce/financial settlements; contact and residence of children; business disputes - If you are acting for yourself but could do with some expert help, or maybe you already have a solicitor but would like to know if I can save you money, give me a ring on 01732 866 562.

The solution is to find the middle ground – a compromise that gives the empowered litigant in person the opportunity to stay in control of their case, reduce their legal spend, yet still have access to legal expertise when needed, which could prove crucial to the outcome of the case. Remember, speaking to me costs nothing but I could end up saving you thousands! This is where I help. For the benefit of new readers, I am not a lawyer and cannot give legal advice. I am a freelance Barristers’ Clerk passionately helping
