4-H Preps for Busy Spring/ Summer By Michael Acosta Lake County Examiner Turning from winter to spring means the 4H groups are in full swing. The deadline for weighins for the 4-H and FFA Market sale is fast approaching. The steer deadlines have already passed for Lakeview, Paisley, North Lake and the Warner Valley. Swine deadlines are coming up in Mid-May, for Lakeview 4H kids, weigh-ins will take place on Wednesday, May 15 or Thursday, May 16 from 4 -6 p.m. at the Lake County Fairgrounds, Paisley 4H will be Friday, May 17 at 9 a.m. at a location to be determined, while North Lake will happen at Dinsdale Farms on Friday, May 17 at 11 a.m. Sheep and goat weighins will happen on Wednesday, June 5 from 3 -5 p.m. at the Lake County Fairgrounds, with Paisley, North Lake and Warner Valley weigh-ins happening on Friday, June 7. Paisley’s will take place at 9 a.m., at a location to be determined, North Lake’s at 11 a.m. at the Miles Ranch, while Warner Valley’s time and location are to be determined. Small animals dates and times have not yet be announced. As spring turns into summer, the Oregon State Extension Office has plenty of fun things lined up. This year is the 10th anniversary of the annual Lego camp, so 4-H Youth Development Coordinator Jamie Davis has some fun things planned for

that milestone event. The event is used to help kids develop early engineering skills, problem solving and more. One of the bigger things that Davis is helping plan is a 4-H Outdoor Recreation Camp that will take place this summer. “This is a huge event kind of like I Try was last summer,” Davis said. “I have about half of the funding secured, so the event will be happening, the only thing I don’t know yet is how long it will be.” The event will be held out at the Warner Canyon Ski Area and the Lake County School District No. 7 is renting a bus for the event. The program will be focused on getting children outside in the summer. This event will take place instead of I Try, as a different way to keep kids
engaged and get them active during the summer. “We reached 65 kids last summer and that was awesome,” Davis said. “However, we couldn’t make it new enough to make it more exciting, knowing that we were going to have a lot of repeat kids.” While all the details aren’t finalized yet, ideas include having a camp atmosphere with camp counseling, bringing in Forest Service and BLM employees to help with recreation activities, participating in camp cooking, small hikes and more. “All of these activities are based on how much funding we secure,” Davis said. Predicting the springtime in Lake County is a difficult thing to do and for the over enthusiastic gardener and planter it’s nearly impossible. A random a erratic weather pattern can throw residents for a loop and even a short overnight frost can destroy the hard work put into a vegetable or flower garden. It’s not just the spring that affects the area; snow has even graced the area in late June. Although there are plants that can be planted during this time of year, the recommendations of Bloomer’s Country Nursery’s Tami Simms has a few recommendations of her own. “Planting season I don’t recommend before Memorial Day, that’s usually the turning point,” said Simms. “Annuals are fragile to the frost and there’s usually even one more killing frost after then.” There are some methods in place to cover gardens at night from a potential freezing frost or drizzle of snow, but there are other alternatives that some gardeners might want to take advantage of in vegetable hanging pots and other small plants that can be grown under the protection of the indoors.
“All plants and vegetables should be inside regardless or covered with old sheets or a burlap sack,” said Simms. Bloomer’s carries their own frost planets and other ways to take care of your plants during the season, but Simms knows that vegetables like tomatoes and peppers won’t survive outside and even in a greenhouse this time of year. Now that the weather is breaking, individuals will also have to deal with the aggressive nibblers that are the deer who enjoy the abundance of food available in yards. To keep them away, Bloomer’s recommends deer resistant plants that are backed by science or spraying more than the recommended amount of deer spray. “As they’re adapting they’re becoming more aggressive,” said Simms. “Deer typically don’t eat grass although people think so, they enjoy shrubs, plants and flowers.” The eager gardener might not be able to hold back, but they should considering the recommendations of not only Bloomers, but online articles and of course your local newspaper. Snack on something healthy
Healthy snacks are a great way to quell hunger pangs without feeling guilty. The following recipe for “Cauliflower Popcorn” from Bob Blumer’s “Surreal Gourmet Bites” (Chronicle Books) is a sweet-tasting alternative to unhealthy snacks.
Cauliflower Popcorn Yields 12 bites
1 head cauliflower 4 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon salt (or, for a salt-free alternative, Mrs. Dash table blend) Preheat oven to 425 F. Cut out and discard cauliflower core and thick stems. Trim remaining cauliflower into florets the size of golf balls. In a large bowl, add cauliflower, olive oil and salt. Toss thoroughly. Spread cauliflower on a baking sheet (line with parchment paper, if available, for easy cleanup). Roast for 1 hour, or until much of the floret has become golden brown. (That’s the caramelization process converting the dormant natural sugars into sweetness. The browner the flo-
rets, the sweeter they will taste.) Turn 3 or 4 times during roasting. Use crumpled up aluminum foil or paper towels to create a false bottom in your popcorn container, fill it with cauliflower, and serve immediately. Note: Raw cauliflower can be precut and refrigerated for up to 2 days in an airtight bag or a bowl of water. With minimal sacrifice, cauliflower can be cooked earlier in the day and reheated in a 450 F oven for 10 minutes.

Filling 3 cups pecan halves, divided 2 cups packed brown sugar 3 eggs 4 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1⁄4 teaspoon salt Powdered sugar, optional Preheat oven to 350 F. For crust, combine flour, powdered sugar and baking soda in a batter bowl. Add butter; mix until crumbly. Lightly press crumb mixture over bottom of stoneware bar pan; roll lightly. Bake 15 minutes; remove from oven to a cooling rack. Meanwhile for filling, reserve 1 cup of the pecans for garnish; chop remaining pecans. Combine chopped pecans, brown sugar, eggs, butter, vanilla, and

salt; mix well. Pour filling over warm crust, spreading to edges of pan. Arrange remaining pecan halves over filling. Bake 17 to 19 minutes, or until filling is set in center. Fishing outlook is bright By Michael Acosta Lake County Examiner A big winter in Lake County means several of the lakes and reservoirs are experiencing above normal water levels. However, due to the wet winter, many entrances to the reservoirs are blocked off due to the snow levels. Many of the reservoirs and bodies of water who experienced low water levels a year ago, don’t have that problem this year and will have fish in them. There will be a little delay in some bodies of water getting fish due to the amount of snow still around “I can’t get in to a lot of places to stock place because there’s still two to three feet of snow,” Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Fish Biologist Justin Miles said. “I’ve heard Thompson Valley Reservoir up in Silver Lake still has three feet of snow, so you can’t even get in there.” Thompson Valley Reservoir isn’t the only place blocked out, as Loften and Holbrook Reservoir won’t be available for fishing until mid to late May. “The good thing about this winter is many of the lakes have filled up. The more water they have, the better they will be,” Miles said. “It also allows for many of the native fish, such as the red band trout, it allows them to get across barriers easier because of the high water and continue swimming up stream.” The two biggest reservoirs, Priday located between Adel and Plush,

where Miles reported many people have been catching trophy trout and Ana Reservoir in Summer Lake has reported several trophy trout being caught already. “Priday is almost to the point where the water is about to start spilling over,” Miles said. “That’s a really big thing because that water level was way below normal a year ago. Piute Reservoir should have a lot of trout in it this year.” Fishing regulations are pretty much the same; five fish can be kept per day on the lakes; rivers and streams have a limit of two with the exception of Ana River, where fishermen can keep five because there’s no native fish. “Ana River and Ana Reservoir don’t close and you can fish year round because it’s spring fed,” Miles said.
Most of the fishing regulations are still intact however. The Sprague River will be closed until April 22 and last year was open until Oct. 31. The ODFW adopted the emergency regulation to protect spawning Redband trout from the stress and mortality associated with fishing pressure and handling. The most up-to-date stocking schedules for each river in the Lakeview District can be viewed at www.myodfw.com. Fisherman can also view the most up-to-date Southeast Oregon recreation report. The Lakeview Office of the ODFW has driving directions to each body of water in Lake County that has fish. Miles said he would be more than happy to print out directions for anyone. Garrett Shaw Lake County Examiner With the first day of spring signaled in on Wednesday, March 20, Lake County has yet to get a break from the winter chills and freezes. It’s almost every day it gets closer, locals wake up with snow on their car when they thought it was long gone. However, when the weather does break finally, residents of the county and specifically Lakeview will be looking for some outdoor activities to take advantage of. There are a plentiful amount of options in town to get out and active, but focusing on the parks is one of the pieces Lakeview residents might be missing. Soroptimist Par Course and the Swimming Pool Park are two of the hot spots when the weather finally breaks for youth and adults alike. At Soroptimist, although under utilized, there are fitness stations including pull ups, sit ups

Along with that, the surrounding wood chipped track encompasses the park creating a space for walkers and runners looking to enjoy the sights and mountains for miles. Of course, there’s also the disc golf course that has been around since 2016 and hosts annual tournaments sponsored by KORV 93.5 FM “The Goose” and is also home to Lake County’s Disc Golf Club that meets weekly once the weather is appropriate and the field isn’t flooded from snowpack. Let’s not forget about the Swimming Pool Park either. Two tennis courts
Although its covered in puddles now, the spring weather will dry up the tennis court at the Swimming Pool Park, making it a destination for Lakeview residents.
sit below the local swimming pool at the top of the hill before the entrance to Bullard Canyon. The court is used for tennis of course, but also basketball tournaments in the summer. There’s been plenty of talk among the various officials in town and specially Town Council member Darwin Johnson for the need to bring some playground or active equipment to the park to improve and develop it even more than it is now. Lake Health District (LHD) has discussed putting a playground equipment assembly at Soroptimist through grant money, but it could also grace the area at the swimming pool although this hasn’t been discussed in full. Never the less, once spring comes for a short time in Lake County, summer quickly follows and taking advantage of these areas is a great way to stay active and get outside. Soroptimist Par Course is located on South 3rd Street, just west of Mountain View Road. The Swimming Pool Park is located on North D Street.
