ABOUT ME

EDUCATION

Soul Luk studied Landscape Architecture program in Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi). From urban planning, feasibility study, concept design, planting selection, detail design and documentation production, he has well ability to conduct each task efficiently. Design of site specific elements, application of sustainable ideas and preservation of site historical culture are his three major familiarized fields.

2013 - 2017 Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Landscape Architecture, Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong

Worked in different companies with can-do attitude, ability to work under pressure, good communication skill and interpersonal ability make Soul a strong person to tackle challenges, even sudden cases.

WORKING EXPERIENCE

Soul is trained to have a global perspective although most of his works are local projects which demonstrated his commitment to his hometown and hope to improve a better sustainable environment in Hong Kong.

Green Connection, Green Wall & Free to Go

Kwu Tung North New Development Area (NDA) is one of proposed strategic planning areas for fulfilling the Hong Kong future population. Kwu Tung North is a place full of ecological value with some unique historical villages. Concept of “3ree G� includes three approaches which involves town development as well as conservation of environment.

1. Green Connection - connecting all individually isolated green belt areas, a long greenery is proposed to connect all site activities; 2. Green Wall - developing the minimun flat land for fulfilling government requirements and preserving various terrains which act as a green buffer for ecology; 3. Free to Go - balancing vehicular circulations and human walkways that enhance internal walkability and minimize impacts on environment. Sustainable designs like aquaponics system are introduced to promote new forms of living and farming styles which also maximize public enjoyment and public interest.

Also, healing landscape could overcome the innermost anxiety of both groups of patients and non-patients whereas providing interactions between human to human, and even human to nature as an active relaxation.

Nowadays, the elderly is the main residential group in the estate. The estate is facing a challenge of redevelopment. A New Gateway for Tung Chung East

Development of Lantau Island is one of the crucial mass scale planning strategic studies in Hong Kong 2030+: Towards a Planning Vision and Strategy Transcending 2030. Lantau could be evolving into a place of rich biodiversity with treasurable ecological beauty, fascinating entertainment attractions and a liveable new town. Tung Chung New town extension is a major development project next to North Lantau Corridor. Comprehensive housing mix with commercial use will be allocated there. It helps to reduce the existing overcrowded situation in Tung Chung Town as relaxation as well as provide economic incomes and enhance sustainability in North Lantau at the same time. Design focuses on human walkability that cycling is the main transport within the area. Some parts of the cycling track will be elevated for the safety of pedestrians but some parts are built on ground to connect adjacent commercial and entertainment uses. These pathways either cross each other or go in parallel. It creates a pleasant rhythm and wave on the site. Embroidery, Funeral, Life

Yau Ma Tei is one of the mass scale reclamation areas in 1900s. In tradition, it was a hub of handiworks and cultures including hemp rope making, funeral services, embroidery services, logistics and trading. Those skills and arts are starting to disappear due to intensity of importance on public concern. Project takes part in half of Portland Street which will be blocked but with 2 floors of car parking area open to the public. Shanghai Street will become a permanent pedestrian street that is visually connected to other zones at the same time. The major cultures intended to be promoted are embroidery services and funeral services. They are the main dominant culture in Shanghai Street and adjoining Portland Street respectively in 1900s. The proposed design provides a car-free area for promotion of these cultures. Through public education in a static location, traditional acts could be reidentified and shown in front of the public with the hope of such cultures being a continuous tradition to be passed on to future generations.

Reclamation Street represents life and ocean since it was a coastline in 1900s.

During peak moments, the number of embroidery shops in Shanghai Street exceeded far more than 30. Red colour symbolically links to wedding in Chinese culture.

During 1900s and 1950s, more than 15 shops of funeral services were operated. White colour symbolically represents tragedy or links to death in Chinese culture.

Red Zone is a straight promenade which is surrounded by Tong Lau and connected to Blue Zone. A long sitting-out area is provided to users to take rest after they buy whatever they want. Some shops are proposed to be embroidery shops matching the aim of this zone.

White Zone is giving a sense of peaceful and quiet atmosphere to users like Japanese Zen Garden. A quiet place is allowing visitors to reflect themselves and appreciate the Yau Ma Tei surroundings.

Blue Zone is representing a lively interaction between humans so that larger space is provided to hold events and activities. Lots of dynamic water features appear to match the theme of this zone too.

An Unclear Border

Sino-British Joint Declaration was signed between Chinese and British governments on 19 December 1984. As stipulated in the Joint Declaration and following the “one country, two systems” principle, socialism practiced in mainland China would not be extended to Hong Kong. Instead, Hong Kong would continue its capitalist system and way of life for 50 years after reunification on 1st July 1997. Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link Hong Kong Section (XRL HK section) started construction on 20 October 2009. In 2018 May, a Co-location Arrangement of XRL HK section overruled the conditions of Joint Declaration as well as rights of Basic Law. Border of HKSAR is getting vague. The art piece is a timeline and form of protestation. A geometric cuboid framework demonstrates a strong policy issued by Chinese government. On the other hand, a solid cuboid represents HKSAR which is being assimilated. Before 2047, Hong Kong will be fully controlled by the Chinese government.

LOCATION For protesting on cession of Hong Kong’s land, the art piece will be located at landscape deck which is connected to West Kowloon Station and West Kowloon Culture District. Curved arrangement of the art piece is in coherence to the design of the future station. Three metaphors are presented by allocations of the art: 1. First 21 pieces will be located outside of the boundary of the station. 2. 22nd piece will be placed on the boundary of the station (dotted line) to record the year of cession; and 3. The remaining pieces will be placed inside the boundary to satirize the policy enforced by the Chinese government.

MATERIAL Solid cuboid is made by granite with some major incidents engraved on surface. Metal framework is made of stainless steel.

REPRESENTED YEAR

REFLECTION The last 18 metal frameworks (2030-2047) are without solid cuboid inside. This area is allowing people to sit on the framework to feel the coldness from metal and, at the same time, reflect what hongkongers should do in the future.

By exploring the study model, shadow is the main component to make visual connection on both routes. The pattern creates fancy and unique rhythm on the chosen area.

PREDICTION From 23rd to 33rd pieces (2019-2029) is a prediction by designer. Designer guesses that Hong Kong will soon be fully controlled by Chinese government. Quality of life, economic and livelihood of Hong Kong will be a good to fair condition.

The 22nd piece (2018) only involves metal framework. It is the first time to appear among the entire art piece. It symbolizes the message of the China judiciary annexation on Hong Kong and eliminate Hong Kong’s border.

The first 12 pieces (1997-2008) shows ideal situation of “one country, two systems’ principle. Solid cuboid (Hong Kong) and metal framework (China) is no controversy involved in this period.

Bending of metal frame work increase from 13th piece to 21st piece (2009-2017) in terms of allocation and shadow. It shows the Chinese policy is getting stricter and Hong Kong government is enforced to follow.

Year 2017 A New Track - Sustainable Design

A New Track

Tai Wai Nullah Revitalization

Total Length of Tai Wai Nullah is about 1.9km with a width of about 39m. It is the upstream channelised section of Shing Mun River. Concrete nullah bed is usually exposed since a longer width of the channel and small amount of water body. The design focuses on downstream section which starts from Tsing Sha Highway to the end of the nullah and linking up Shing Mun River.

2. Formation adopts cut and fill method that remains capacity of the nullah.

Tai Wai Nullah as a linear and non-stop infrastructure, it is a great place for the cycling activity. It provides an alternative cycle network for residents.

“Cut & Fill“ Method

Citizens are allowed to reach their destination by bicycle in short and moderate distance. It is a good practice to encourage and promote walkability in Hong Kong. Walking pathway is designed to twist and turn to create a longer distance for living and a more comfortable environment in Tai Wai. The existing cycle tracks which are next to the two sides of Shing Mun River. In addition, the capacity of nullah is not minimized. Large scale of water resistant planting creates a comfortable and greening space to the citizens as well as improving the habitat of wildlife.

CONNECTION As for vehicular circulation, transport infrastructure in a loop pattern to link the eastern and western community. Vertical linkage, however, for northern and southern community is weak due to separation by Tsing Sha Highway and Tai Po Road. Internal transport such as minibus is a better transportation means to link vertical community.

This approach could be a pilot study of Tai Wai Nullah and proposal of the extension to link the whole community of Tai Wai. It offers alternative track and makes comprehensive use of the whole Tai Wai Nullah.

This side of terraced riverside shrubs aims to provide visual attraction for people who are sitting on lawn.

Although the water body is shallow, emerged plants should always perform better ability on water resistance.

Riverside trees have ability on water tolerance, sometimes perform drought tolerance as well when rainfall is limited.

This side of riverside shrubs are planted in steeper slopes. Species having strong root system is recommended.

The worst flooding situation occupies all capacity of Tai Wai Nullah and no programming in the nullah can be used. Both sides of sewer will work together to catalyze minimization of the size of water body as fast as possible.

When heavy rain occurs, boardwalk is immersed completely. Few plantings will not be influenced. Both sides of sewer will work on the same time for minimizing direct impacts on the design.

Under normal rain, water level increases. Passing through the boardwalk of cycle track, water firstly acts as a source of irrigation then goes to sewer or bypasses the network. The design will become a rain garden.

Stormwater Management Porous paving, rain garden and the vegetated area help to collect the rainwater efficiently and enhance the rainwater infiltration into the soil.

A Semi-Underground Scheme

For alleviating the land demands in Hong Kong, Kowloon Park underground space study is going to provide housing units with supporting facilities network meanwhile adding up landscape friendly design with the existing historical value. The upper level includes a canope walkway to provide different spatial experiences to users. Reforming the existing Kowloon Park Sport Centre to integrate a multi-recreational facilities to support surrounding community and provide a high angle view for Kowloon Park. Design consists of numerous linkage stairs or slopes to facilitate users’ destinations. Additionally all Old and Valuable Trees (OVTs) are kept for the ecological, aesthetic and social value of the society. As for underground space, it aims to improve circulation between Austin Road and Haiphong Road and enlarge the commercial area to reinforce attractiveness and competitiveness of the Tsim Sha Tsui Commercial Zone. Energy Efficiency Adequate amount of sunlight is directed into the underground area by the use of transparent roofing or solar light tube which reduces the amount of electricity used.

Ecological Friendly Existing OVTs and bird communities are retained on site of which the facilities for them would be enhanced. An ecological area in the middle of the site would be reserved for birds and small animals.

Micro-climate A large area of greening is kept to reduce the urban heat island effect in the city center. It keeps the area cooler and the trees there purify the air.

Reuse of Building Materials The material from the demolition of the existing building would be recycled and reused in the construction of the new buildings and new pavements. For example, the concrete and glass can be reused in making new pavement aggregate and paver.

RECREATIONAL COMPLEX Since the existing sports centre and swimming pool are out of capacity, a new complex of 8-storey high (including 1 level of basement) is proposed. The complex considers the society needs such as common space and learning commons. Also, it provides a parking basement in Tsim Sha Tsui that is convenient for drivers. AIRRAID SHELTER EXHIBITION GALLERY Under different considerations, cutting off the top of airraid shelter with glass covering is proposed. It not only provides users other experiences to appreciate the exhibition held below, but also conserves the existing geostructure, form and texture of the airraid shelter as well as preserves the art pieces being oxidized and destroyed by human simultaneously.

PLANTING SCHEME

AVIAVY Facilities and size of the existing aviary need to be improved. A smaller aviary is added on hill top to provide more space to the existing birds living inside the aviary. A small scale wetland is constructed on the top of hill followed by a naturalistic stream downhill to the middle corridor forming a little waterfall feature. Provision of more bird attracting trees and water ponds with various depths creates a better habitat for the local and migratory bird communities. The existing Chinese Garden is transformed into a naturalistic lake and ecological environment for the betterment of wildlife. The existing birds living in the pond would be moved into a bigger lake.

HABITAT ESTABLISHMENT

CANOPY WALK Kowloon Park is a historical site with many OVTs and architecture. The circulation is designed by connecting the location of OVTs where most of the bird nesting and some of the native wildlife are. Adopting the whole new perspective to view the beauty of Tsim Sha Tsui could be an option to enjoy the space. By using the user-friendly electric elevators or stairs, everybody has an equal opportunity to use the facility.

Through canopy walkway, visitors could walk above the top of the trees with height of 20m with dramatic experience of the site and entertain family and friends. Some parts of the walkway are of 15m height that people can walk under the tree canopy which gives a close touch relationship between human and nature. The first canopy walk in Hong Kong will redefine the place as an ideal iconic park. Since Hong Kong is a well-known city in the tourism sector, a unique and innovative park is essential.
