Welcome... I hope that you are all enjoying one of the warmest, longest periods of sunny weather that I can remember. It is certainly hot out there! There are those people who believe we are experiencing the effects of global warming, whilst others believe that the earth is in a cycle that has been occurring since time began where it warms and then cools over periods of hundreds of years. 2018 may well go down as having ‘one of the hottest summers on record’, but we can only go back as far as records began, which in the bigger picture is not actually that long, certainly not long enough to demonstrate the cycle theory and certainly not long enough to prove or disprove global warming. The hottest day ever recorded in the UK was actually back in 2003, near Faversham in Kent, 15 years ago, and the previous hottest day in the UK back in 1976, 42 years ago, a year which also experienced the hottest overall UK summer on record. Whilst basking in the heat though it has somewhat perplexed me why the building that our offices are in, which are the most modern in the vicinity, do not have airconditioning and I greatly sympathise with those working in similar conditions!

EVENTS The stylish bedrooms have been individually designed incorporating unique touches and bespoke furnishings, to offer a luxurious stay in the beautiful surroundings and has made The Nottinghamshire a unique hospitality venue and the county's only 36 hole golf & hotel complex. Bill added: "We had been inundated with requests for accommodation from Business, Wedding and Golfing customers alike for a number of years and have had to work in partnership with local hotels to be able to offer this. Now, with the continued development of The Residence, we can offer a more rounded experience to all our varying types of guests when they visit The Nottinghamshire.”

Midlands's fastest growing Golf and Hospitality complex continues to expand. Under the guidance of Nottinghamshire businessman and owner, Alan Hardy, The Nottinghamshire Golf & Country Club has undergone significant changes over recent years and has firmly established itself as the number one Golf and Hospitality complex in the County if not the Midlands. The complex located six miles from Nottingham city centre, is set in the rolling parkland and manicured grounds of its two 18 hole golf courses. Nestled outside of Cotgrave village The Nottinghamshire has made the most of its stunning location with the opening of The Lakeview Restaurant which boasts views across the lush, green fairways. Visitors are welcome seven days a week to enjoy a full A La Carte menu, with great value Lunchtime Specials as well as its ever popular Sunday Lunch Carvery.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

Due to the popularity of The Lakeview restaurant, the new development at the complex includes a stunning new Lounge bar, complete with marble fronted bar, creating additional luxurious seating in sumptuous furnishings and décor, for golfers and visitors alike. All this, alongside an extension to the glass Terrace, and a state of art extension of the patio which will make the ambiance overlooking the 1st Tee of The Championship Course the perfect spot to enjoy an Afternoon Tea or a chilled drink after your round.

rounded experience for golfers of all abilities. The undulating greens and strategic hazards provide tests throughout the round culminating at the stunning par 5 island green finishing hole. Both these two quality courses have been recognised by the golfing public by winning the Best Golf Society complex in the Midlands, for the last two years running and with a modern and fully equipped brand new pro shop about to be launched, in June, this is likely to continue. The opening of The Residence Boutique Hotel at the Nottinghamshire Golf & Country Club in 2016 added the final missing piece of the jigsaw. Offering 18 beautifully appointed bedrooms complete with designer fabrics and finishes, the hotel has enjoyed an amazing eighteen months, so much so that they are currently constructing twelve new bedrooms, opening this June. Bill Mackenzie, Managing Director at The Nottinghamshire, said: "The Residence is part of an ongoing development programme at The Nottinghamshire Golf and Country Club which has seen the club invest heavily both on and off the course over the past three years.”

A true test of golf, the Championship course is set amongst a complex waterways system bringing water into play on 14 out of the 18 holes. The signature par 3, 14th hole highlights this challenge with those unfortunate to enter the hazard facing a walk to the county's only island drop zone. The Signature course has been recently remodelled to offer a challenging 18 holes that complements the Championship Course to provide a truly

stunning new landscaping project which was completed recently. New lawns and paths leading up to the magnificent water feature, plus a beautiful new gazebo for the happy couple to be photographed in, all add to the amazing experience you will enjoy when you get married at The Nottinghamshire. So, with new Lounge bars, Pro shop, Glass Terrace, Patio, Wedding entrance as well as 2 new putting greens and 1st Tee complex, no one can say that Alan Hardy and his team let the grass grow under their feet that's for sure. Is it really as good as it sounds ? The only way to find out is to come and experience it and as everyone is welcome at The Nottinghamshire we look forward to welcoming you soon.

RIVERSIDE FAMILY GOLF CENTRE - N1GOLF An excellent golf centre in the centre of Nottingham The Golf Centre has undergone a £600,000 development plan and is now perfectly positioned for the 21st-century, making it the ideal venue to learn or improve your golf. Facilities include a 24 bay floodlit golf range, a nine hole golf course, a brandnew 18-hole CrazyPutt adventure golf built to the highest standards, a top quality teaching academy and fitting centre, and American Golf will be running the retail at the site from Spring this year. Grace's Coffee Shop provides excellent food and drink in an informal setting, perfect for those wishing to socialise after enjoying one or all of these activities. The range, which has been wellequipped by European Golf Machinery, has proved very popular and has the advantage of direct access straight from the clubhouse. This provides golfers with the opportunity to take advantage of retail, or food and drink, to and from the golf range.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

The CrazyPutt adventure golf course covers approximately 2500m² and is accessed directly from the car park. The course is well used, particularly at weekends and during the school holidays, and has yet to have its first summer, having only just opened in the autumn last year.

16

The adventure golf course has had a fantastic reception and expected to be quite busy. Children, families, youths, seniors and adults of all types can enjoy the skilful game without requiring any pre-existing experience in the sport of golf. At busy times over 100 people can be accommodated on the course.

Taking inspiration from famous courses from around the world, including St Andrew's 18th hole (complete with mini Swilken Bridge, where you can grab a commemorative snap), The 12th hole at Augusta National and 17th at Sawgreen (also known as the Island Green), both in the States, have also been given a nod but you certainly don't have to be a golf buff to enjoy a jaunt around the green. The 2,500 square metre site is littered with Lost World-themed obstacles ideal for anyone The course itself is no walk in the park and a game - which should take an average player around an hour to complete - has enough tricks and twists to keep punters coming back for more. Indeed, as well as the usual patches of rough and sandy bunkers trying to catch players out, the course also has streams of water running through it... in fact, to get around the course adventure golfers will need to navigate two pulley-operated rafts across waters three inches deep.

The clubhouse building has been completely converted, with the old golf shop now being the home of Grace's Coffee Shop - The eatery will serve coffee, beers and wines as well as paninis, toasties and a deli counter. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE RESTAURANT & BAR AWARDS

The highlight of the regional hospitality industry calendar and the main event of the recently launched and newly branded Nottingham Restaurant & Bar Awards was held at Colwick Hall Hotel, hosted by television personality, Mark Durden-Smith. Launched back in September at St Mary’s Church in the Lace Market, just ahead of the live voting during which a record breaking 48,609 votes were received from the public and before being put to the final taste test by independent judges from the world of food and drink, this year’s prestigious event saw the independents scooping fourteen out of a total of fifteen awards. Best Front of House Restaurant Team sponsored by health and safety software specialists, ACMS UK Winner: Memsaab Runner’s Up: Bar Iberico, Tom Browns, World Service

Judges from across the UK were invited to have the final say and in doing so not only help put Nottingham on the culinary map but offer a completely unbiased approach. Tim Cooper, a columnist for the London Evening Standard said “I was blown away by the nightlife scene in Nottingham, and its secret watering holes waiting to be discovered - though, judging by the crowds, and the queues outside, the secret is already out." Carina Simon, national freelance food and drink writer, added “The best restaurants in Nottingham right now could hold their own in any city -its residents are lucky to have them.” And while celebrating and rewarding all those that did well in the voting, the marketing platforms for the industry in the region as a whole continue to offer the opportunity for all restaurants, bars, pubs and gastro pubs to interact with large audiences, making the Nottingham Restaurant and Bar Awards both unique and invaluable.

“There’s no doubt competition is important in raising standards, but we also need to promote what Nottingham has to offer, and the Nottingham Restaurant & Bar Awards do just that through the dedicated website, www.nrbawards.co.uk and the various social media platforms, something that we didn’t have available the last time we held the previous incarnation, The Nottingham Restaurant Awards,” comments Kerry Mathie, co-founder of Big Table PR and the NRBA. Chris Robinson, Managing Director of Adtrak adds, “In headline sponsoring the Awards, Adtrak is a perfect fit, as our skills and expertise lie in digital marketing so we’ve been able to create, and will continue to build, the digital marketing platforms and exposure that will ensure our restaurants, bars, pubs and gastro pubs reach ever wider audiences,” adding “it’s a pleasure to be involved in sponsoring these Awards and, more importantly, supporting the local economy through this initiative.”

LICENSING LAW CONSULTANCY CELEBRATES ITS 1ST BIRTHDAY NOTTINGHAMSHIRE Business associates and clients involved in the licensed and hospitality trade from all over UK attended the 1st Birthday celebration of Licensing Law Consultancy (LLC) which was held in the Royal Suite at Crowne Plaza Hotel in Nottingham. These included local operators, landlords, investors and breweries as well as business contacts and clients who represent brands which have a national and international presence. In addition, Institute of Licensing (IOL) members from a variety of businesses and organisations from as far as Birmingham, London, North England and Scotland travelled to Nottingham to join in the celebration. Guests also included representatives from national trade organisations such as Leaders in Licensing and Regulation, the Night Time Industries Association and members of the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers. Paul Chase, a director of CPL Training Group, UK's leading training provider for retail and hospitality, gave the opening speech: “It's always less risky to remain in someone else's organisation than to start your own. Starting the Licensing Law Consultancy was therefore a brave step and one which testifies to Walaiti's entrepreneurial spirit.” “When representing clients at licensing hearings it is important to be persuasive, because objectors are sometimes very emotional when they express their concerns. Walaiti has the ability to take his listener on a journey, to draw them into his narrative and to take the emotional heat out of a situation and replace it with the light of reason.” “Walaiti, with his calm and understated appeal to reason, is hard to disagree with! Moreover, when he's won you over you're left feeling that the view he has invited you to take is how you felt all along, and that, ladies and gentlemen, is not just a skill, but a talent, and one that will take Walaiti Rathore and his Licensing Law Consultancy, a very long way.” Walaiti Rathore, owner of LLC said:

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

“I am not qualified to give business advice, this is only the first step and I have a long way to go. However, if anyone was to ask then I would say the most important thing is to have a vision and then to surround yourself with a good, quality people. My vision for today was to bring together all those quality people who have supported LLC and those I want to continue working with to celebrate and thank them. I feel absolutely honoured that so many people representing well known and respected brands and organisations locally, regionally and nationally have supported LLC and this event. This would not be possible without them.”

32

“I am pleased that many people instantly bought into our ambition to innovate in the provision of licensing services when we launched LLC in February 2017 which enabled us to provide a cost effective and high quality service. Since our restrictive covenants came to end earlier this year and this event, we have received an increased number of enquiries and instructions for licensing services. “ “I am equally pleased with the professional partners we work with such as law firms, accountants, insurers and financial advisers who help provide a service which covers all our clients need for sector specific professional services.” “LLC is now in a position to work with and benefit more licensees and organisation.”

TO NETWORK OR NOT TO NETWORK THAT IS THE QUESTION... by Fiona Duncan-Steer, RSViP www.rsvipnetwork.couk

Now more than ever the average person in business whether self employed or an employee...is networking. Ten years ago when I first launched my business network RSViP, there were a handful of large organisations offering various networking solutions, all of which offered the same kind of format- heavily structured, pitch focussed and ever so slightly stuffy. This was 100% my inspiration for stepping outside of the box and finding another, more enjoyable solution for networking - why not introduce a more social element to the current networking format, to offer a relaxed and less contrived way to make new connections and build new relationships with other business folk. It was a challenge in the beginning to educate the masses as to what I was trying to achieve, being as it was merely a light bulb moment in my head initially, but eventually the concept caught on! Over the years, I have seen new networks come and go and more so than ever before, we see a huge growth in networks popping up across the East Midlands, my inbox is full of invitations to network at lawyers firms, banks, bars and even bakeries - all offering a different style - some catching on and offering the more relaxed vibe I have so long endorsed... But how do you know which are worth your time? The short answer- Research. With a lot of things it's a case of 'suck it and see'- 'try before you buy' and all that, but with network events you can do your research in advance- check reviews, ask others if they have attended and what they thought- even Google. We offer a free taster visit for first time guests- always look for those, but equally for us at the other side of things running the events, if someone isn't willing to pay a fee to attend subsequent events or join your network and spends all of their time seeking out the freebies across the city, then they are not the clientele you necessarily want within your network-so don't be that person either- you have to speculate to accumulate and in order to mix in the right circles- it will cost.

Tel: 0115 941 1632

Remember too, you are a representation of your brand and your business services - so wouldn't you naturally want to be seen at the right places with the right people who also mirror this? My advice- YES get out there and network - just be strategic about it.

Laguna Tandoori Restaurant 43 Mount Street Nottingham NG1 6HE

Many networks won't be for you for whatever reason, it may be the format doesn't suit you, or that the calibre of businesses there are not your market, or they come across as too amateur and unorganised, so be sure that you heavily consider not filling your diary for the month ahead with a selection of any old events just because you were invited, as it really isn't a numbers game - be strategic, be clever, be the tortoise not the hare and make the effort to forge healthy business relationships over a period of time. It isn't about how many business cards you can collect over the working week and after all time is money - in particular for smaller businesses who will notice a half day out of the office away from a productive day working both 'on' and 'in' their business.

Katie Fulfils Her Dream With Breast Surgery At Woodthorpe Assistant accountant Katie Lang has been considering breast surgery for years. She wanted to feel more womanly, increase her self confidence and be proud of her figure. Here she talks about her life-changing breast augmentation surgery at Nottingham's Woodthorpe Hospital and the huge buzz it has given her for the future.

What are your reasons for having breast surgery?

How long did the operation take?

My weight has always fluctuated and it was always my breasts that seemed to suffer. When I lost weight it was always my breasts that seemed to reduce in size and they were most noticeable to me, even if other parts of my body had stayed the same. I've always been an active gym-goer but I was conscious about how I looked and I felt negative about my breasts.

The surgery itself took between an hour and a half and two hours. I stayed on the hospital ward overnight following the operation and the hospital have been very thorough in terms of follow-up appointments to check that everything is OK following my surgery. The whole process ran very smoothly, from my initial consultation through to the surgery itself, and it couldn't have gone any better.

What research did you do? Are you pleased with the results? Choosing the right surgeon for the surgery you are considering is an important decision and not something you should take lightly. I'd done some research on the internet and I actually went to see another surgeon before I chose the consultant at Woodthorpe Hospital but I never felt comfortable about whether they could deliver exactly what I wanted. Woodthorpe was recommended to me and I'd heard good things about the excellent Cosmetic Surgery service and the hospital is on my doorstep so it was a win-win situation for me. Did you have reservations and concerns about having breast surgery? Yes I think it's only normal to have worries and concerns. You hear about certain horror stories but the consultant outlined all the pros and cons of surgery with me very thoroughly so I knew exactly where I stood with everything. I was worried about any scarring and not being able to do things afterwards but my scar was like a small scratch and I experienced hardly any discomfort afterwards.

I am absolutely thrilled with the outcome, I couldn't be any happier. My breasts are exactly the shape and size that I wanted. The consultant has created such a natural look, exactly how I imagined. I can now look in the mirror and feel proud of my figure and I'm looking forward to going back to the gym and wearing my bikini for the first time on holiday. As well as being pleased with how you look physically, the results are having a very positive impact on me mentally as well which is so important too. What was your experience like at Woodthorpe Hospital? The hospital was absolutely fantastic. It is a warm, friendly environment and I received the most professional care from the consultants, nurses, doctors, surgeons, the anaesthetist and the recovery team. The food was excellent and I have never met so many dedicated individuals who treated me with compassion and were always friendly. I'm so grateful to each and every one of them for doing such a great job and making my experience so amazing.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

What made you decide to go ahead with surgery?

58

For me, I felt that this was the right time. I needed to bite the bullet and have it done because I've had my heart set on the surgery for so long. I need to feel comfortable and right about something before going ahead with it, but as soon as I met the consultant Miss Anna Raurell and visited Woodthorpe I knew straight away that this was the perfect environment for me. You are bound to feel apprehensive about having any kind of surgery but I was made to feel at ease from the word go.

What would your advice be to anyone considering Cosmetic Surgery? I would say 'go for it'. Everyone nowadays is chasing perfection because of the celebrity culture and social media but I think it's just about feeling comfortable in yourself and your appearance. It's important to do your homework and gain a good rapport with the consultant but the results for me have been completely life-changing. I'm buzzing with my new look and I just can't describe how amazing it feels.

HOME & GARDEN

THE key benefits of indoor/outdoor living space are clear - tranquillity of nature and the feeling of connection to the great outdoors. With the decrease of urban spaces it can be tough to feel connected to the outdoors in a more urban environment. A great way to boost the link between inside and out is to choose a seamless flooring that bridges the gap by creating a visual harmony from the inside out. That’s where hard wearing porcelain tiles are a brilliant choice for bridging inside and outside spaces as they are tough and weatherproof and are widely available with a slip-resistant finish. Decking Look But, there isn’t always the same tile to use for both; so you could go for that decking look with a porcelain tile plank. The beauty of the wood plank look-a-like but without having all the fuss of keeping it cleaned, protected or sanded.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

If however, you haven’t got a lot of space, a clever design trick is yo use one material for the kitchen and then just a metre or so before the kitchen ends, switch material to the same or similar as

70

your outdoor flooring. For example, flagstones. Flagstones are porous, so will always require a sealer to protect from stains, but they can be a great link to the perception of the outdoorsindoors. Another trick is to follow the grain. Many of the woods typically used in interiors, such as oak, pine and ash, just aren’t weatherproof enough for external use but a porcelain look-a-like is! If you’re set on using natural woods for both indoors and out, you might find you have to go for different types. But you can create a sense of cohesion by ensuring the planks run in the same direction to lead the eye out into the garden.

If you’re after a functional floor that doesn’t draw the eye too much, go for a natural stone or natural effect tile. It would be easy enough to continue this into your garden and really give the outside space the sense of being an additional room on the house. Same Palette If you’re looking to create a connection between inside and out, but don’t want to go for exactly the same material or style, create the connection by choosing materials in the same tonal colour palette. Indoors, opt for patterned porcelain or cement tiles that draw out something of the natural stone used outside. Our award-winning showrooms’ range of outdoor tiles is ever growing and with plenty of interest from interior designers, architects and contractors alike, it won’t be long before the outdoor space is a prominent continuation of your indoor living area. As well as adding monetary value to your home, with a tiled exterior area, outside living can also promote healthy and well-being living for all the family.
