David Fowkes Jewellery is located in rural Nottinghamshire, in an astonishing Coach House Gallery within Thoresby Courtyard, 20 miles North of Nottingham. For about a decade, the Grade I listed Courtyard, part of the impressive Thoresby Park, has been the home of the David Fowkes Studio Gallery. One of the most important philosophies of David Fowkes jewellery is to manufacture everything from start to finish in-house. This gives David the prospect to maintain incredibly high standards of quality and craftsmanship. Traditional skills are fundamental to his everyday working practises, but modern innovations such as laser technology have offered new creative avenues for both design and manufacture, enabling pieces that could not otherwise be achieved by traditional techniques only.

A speciality-cut aquamarine and diamond ring in 18 carat white gold.

Coloured gemstones with an interesting, unconventional cut are at the heart of the “Affinity”-collection of David Fowkes Jewellery. David has a UK exclusive to these rare and fantastic gems. Commission pieces are often inspired by a gemstone that can eventually lead to a whole suite of jewellery. Sometimes the project can begin from a piece of rough material – David works closely with his artisan stone cutters, hence he can get involved and influence the cutting and the design of the gemstones. Parallel to jewellery with coloured gemstones runs the “Opal”collection. The black opals and boulder opals are sourced from a few different mines in Australia. Again, as a result of close working relationships with the miners and cutters, David gets to cherry pick the best quality opals for his designs. The essence of David Fowkes Jewellery is in its uniqueness. Each piece is totally bespoke and handmade in Nottinghamshire. Nothing is being mass produced, therefore the majority of the work is commission based. David believes that it is essential to design closely with the client to create meaningful jewellery, which affirms their personal sense of style. David thrives on designing ageless, classic luxury that lasts through the test of time.

Welcome... The countdown has begun! As if most of the year hasn’t been hectic enough, we are now entering the twilight zone. Slightly side tracking, but how many of you remember that television series? We are entering that time of year when we try and fit another nine months into the last three. We eat out, party and shop more in the next three months than we have in all the other months combined. We eat more, we drink more and we spend more, and why not we convince ourselves, its only once a year! We can diet, detox and save, starting in January, or at least that is the plan.

In the tradition of The Kinks and the Small Faces and around the same time as Ian Dury and Squeeze, Chas and Dave wrote and recorded exceptionally witty songs about life in London, performed with a strong affection for all things English and reminiscent of many of the great Music Hall artists many years previously. In their case however, the musical accompaniment to their sharply observant material was neither rock nor punk but solid, no-nonsense rock n roll style which had been their background and inspiration! Chas and Dave disbanded in 2009 following the retirement of Dave Peacock after his wife's death. However, In 2010 the boys announced their return to the live circuit due to huge public support.

Jesus Christ Superstar exploded onto the musical scene in 1971 - stunning audiences and changing the face of musical theatre forever. Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's rock opera tells the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus through an extraordinary, groundbreaking score.

Newcomer Jess Glynne will perform at Nottingham's Rock City following the release of her stunning debut album. Jess's album 'I Cry When I Laugh' dropped on August 14th via Atlantic Records. The album documents Jess's life since 'the happiest and saddest day of my life' – when she signed her record contract, but was also broken hearted at the end of a two-year relationship that made her question everyone and everything. But Jess has taken a different approach to the now standard break-up album, 'I wanted this record to be about hope,' she says.

As compelling today as it was at its inception over forty years ago, Jesus Christ Superstar has some of musical theatre's most legendary songs from I Don't Know How to Love Him, Everything's Alright and Gethsemane through to, of course, Superstar.

Out&About with City Life & County Living Magazine

An Evening With Paul Merson Soccer legend turned Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson captivated his audience with on- and offpitch anecdotes when he topped the bill at a very special football and fundraising evening at Alea Casino. The ex-England and Arsenal player gave guests a fascinating insight into his professional life and the well-documented personal problems he has had to overcome during his career as a footballer, match reporter, newspaper columnist and TV presenter. Larger-than-life Merson took to the stage after a sumptuous three-course dinner and entertainment from premier league comedian Jed Stone.

The evening, hosted by fellow ex-footie pro and now Alea's Business Development Manager, Nigel Jemson, was also a real money spinner for tomorrow's top athletes, raising a whopping ÂŁ2635 for SportsAid, a charity long-supported by Caesars Entertainment.

ASHES “We will be using the project as the Willmott Dixon Foundation Regional Trainee Challenge Project for 2015, which will allow a number of young people working with us, as apprentices and trainees, the opportunity to gain real, on the job experience throughout the 24 week build. “The project will deliver a brand new dedicated cricket clubhouse, which will house cricket teams in the summer and junior football in the winter, and will give sports in Nottingham a real boost.”

Steve Williams of Maber, Tracey Francis of TBCT, Nick Heath of Wilmott Dixon

Work on a visionary project to create a new cricket clubhouse on Victoria Embankment in Nottingham has now begun. The project, which is being referred to as the 'Field of Dreams,' is being overseen by contracting giant Willmott Dixon, with the assistance of more than 50 local partners. The contractor has teamed up with Trent Bridge Community Trust – representing Nottinghamshire Cricket Club, Nottinghamshire Cricket Board, Nottinghamshire City Council and Maber Architects to deliver the project. The new clubhouse is the vision of the Trent Bridge Community Trust to leave a true legacy from the Investec Ashes Test series at Trent Bridge in 2013 and 2015. The original plan had been to refurbish an original pavilion at the embankment which had been in a state of disrepair for two decades. The pavilion was so dilapidated, and because it would not have met disability access requirements nor governing body specifications, it had to be demolished, paving the way for this exciting new project. Nick Heath, operations director at Willmott Dixon in the East Midlands, said: “This is a significant project for Nottingham and something that we are very proud to be putting our weight behind – we are committed to the city and getting involved with initiatives like this is very important to us.

The project has caught the attention and imagination of a great many local businesses and organizations. Each partner has either given their skills, services, expertise or goods free of charge or at or below cost price, to see that the Field of Dreams can become a reality. Local partner organisations involved in the project include: Project Managers Faithful & Gould, Engineers Curtins, Local Builders Merchants Jewsons, Wicks, Midland

Building Products, J Wright Roofing, Derry Building Services, Rilmac, Cartwright Communications & RizkMcCay. Tracey Francis of the Trent Bridge Community Trust said: “This is a hugely exciting, visionary project which will really benefit the local Nottingham community by boosting sport for all in the city.” Over the past three years, the Nottinghamshire Cricket Board & ECB have invested in three artificial cricket pitches at Victoria Embankment – with a nationally renowned 'Last Man Stands' league operating through the summer months featuring 16 teams, and a brand new community cricket team called The Meadows. Volunteers from the local community will get involved and businesses will be encouraged to support the work by volunteering their time to the project. The project is on programme to be completed in December 2015

Lianne La Havas - Blood ‘Blood’ is the second studio album by British recording artist Lianne La Havas. Following the release of her critically acclaimed debut ‘Is Your Love Big Enough?’ (2012) La Havas embarked on a variety of tours and festivals before travelling to Jamaica. During La Havas’ time in Jamaica, she attempted to regain a connection with her roots, the exploration inspired La Havas to begin writing the follow up to her debut. Lianne has cited the album as a homage towards her Jamaican and Greek bloodline, which in turn inspired the album’s title. ‘Blood’ is seen as a departure from the acoustic musical leanings of her debut album, taking on a neo soul and Jazz style, with elements of R&B, doo-wop, reggae and gospel music.

Lana Del Rey - Honeymoon

Disclosure - Caracal

After teasing lyrics and snippets of tracks on social media, Lana Del Rey has caused quite the buzz about her fourth studio album, Honeymoon, which is to be released in September. When speaking about the upcoming album, Del Rey said, “It’s growing into something I really like. I’m kind of enjoying sinking into this more noirish feel for this one. It’s been good.” She added that, along with the new music, Honeymoon is likely to feature a cover of Nina Simone’s Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood. She said: “I like summarising the record with a jazz song. I’m having fun with my interpretation.”

Brothers Howard and Guy Lawrence are back with the follow up to 2013’s ‘Settle.’ ‘Caracal’ features collaborations with Nao, Lion Babe, Kwabs and Sam Smith, who sang on the band’s breakthrough single ‘Latch.’ In a statement, Howard Lawrence explained the album title:

Books The Girl in the Spider’s Web by David Lagercrantz In this adrenaline-charged thriller, genius-hacker Lisbeth Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist face a dangerous new threat and must again join forces. Late one night, Blomkvist receives a phone call from a trusted source claiming to have information vital to the United States. The source has been in contact with a young female super hacker–a hacker resembling someone Blomkvist knows all too well. The implications are staggering. Blomkvist, in desperate need of a scoop for Millennium, turns to Lisbeth for help. She, as usual, has her own agenda. In The Girl in the Spider’s Web, the duo who thrilled 80 million readers in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest meet again in an extraordinary and uniquely of-the-moment thriller.

The book is divided into breakfasts, lunches and dinners, and every tasty meal is nutritionally balanced so that any combination over the day will bring you in under your recommended daily allowance of calories, allowing you to enjoy snacks and drinks on the side. You can eat Smoothie Pancakes with Berries, Banana, Yoghurt and Nuts for breakfast, Tasty Fish Tacos with Game-Changing Kiwi, Lime and Chilli Salsa for lunch and Griddled Steak and Peppers with Herby-Jewelled Tabbouleh Rice for dinner, and still be healthy!

“A caracal is an incredible wild cat that I became fascinated with while on tour last year; I just love the way they look, their physical capabilities and their anonymity. It felt like a perfect fit for our Wild Life brand too, so the caracal made perfect sense as the lead visual for the new album and over the course of recording.”

Brought to you by two local chaps, this place is all about being different. From the beach huts to the Gin bar, it is all part of the journey to bring back good & proper British food that you know and love but with an unexpected quirky twist!

The building where George’s serve the good folks of Nottingham good and proper grub with a difference, hasn’t always been a place for delicious food. In fact, the stunning grade 2 listed building that they now call home was formerly home to Nottingham’s largest Post Office. Home to quirky interior design, splendid British Gins and Vodkas, and many scrumptious dishes, the restaurant has been voted as a finalist for the International Restaurant & Bar design awards, as well as winning Best New Venue 2015 at the Nottinghamshire Food & Drink Awards! As you look through the newspaper menus, whether you’re sitting in Devon, Whitby or Newquay (The names of some of their beach huts of course) it won’t take long to realise that this is something very different to anywhere else in Nottingham.

Sourced from local family owned suppliers where possible, the ingredients that make up George’s spiffing menu are chosen especially for them.

Just some of the menu choices that you can tuck into include INKA grilled fish and Mushy Pea Fritters with a creamy Wasabi dip. Despite the name, George’s Fish and Chip Kitchen is far from concentrating solely on Fish dishes... the fantastic INKA grill can also cook up delicious steaks and burgers! To finish off there are some delightful desserts too, including sweet shop inspired ice cream, freshly made doughnuts and a hot banana & Nutella sandwich! These will certainly bring back all those childhood memories of the Seaside.

Don’t book your Christmas party just yet... the best is yet to come! We are working on putting together a spiffing Christmas Set Menu! Our scrummy dishes are not completely finalised yet but you can take a peek at just a couple of the marvellous options on our Facebook page! Visit our Website and Social Media pages to see why we’ve been voted the Best New Venue in Nottingham or call 01159 505521 to book now.

Chino Latino Nottingham 41 Maid Marian Way Nottingham NG1 6GD Tel: 0115 9477 444 www.chinolatino.eu/nottingham We recently had the pleasure of being invited to Nottingham Hotspot Chino Latino's, to dine and try out their new additions to the menu. The multi-award winning Pan-Asian restaurant and cocktail bar has the reputation as one of the best dining venues in Nottinghamshire, an honour that is definitely well deserved. The restaurant is situated within the prestigious Park Plaza Hotel; in the heart of the City Centre. Surrounded by the hustle and bustle of urban life, it is an all too welcome reprieve to step into the grand building and settle in for a relaxing, joyous evening; where the staff are friendly and the chefs expertly combine flavours of the west to produce mouth-watering dishes with a twist. From the moment you walk into the venue you know that you're in for a great experience. We were instantly struck by the welcoming atmosphere and stylish, contemporary décor; wall to wall shades of grey and red capture the eye and sleek, black tables beckon you further. The large cocktail bar serves as the hub of activity, as a multitude of customers enjoy fantastically made drinks, basking in the luxurious yet modern oriental style of the restaurant. With an open kitchen, you are able to see the masterful chefs preparing the fresh, tantalising food right in front of you. We decided that we would try a varied selection from the menu, in order to really get a taste for the range of flavours on offer; but if I had to choose favourites, it would be the Calamari with tamarind dressing accompanied by tomato, red onion and mint, which was beautifully tender and cooked to perfection. We teamed this with the soft shell crab as an excellent fishy starter, which was undoubtedly some of the best crab I have ever tasted, in a spiced curry style sauce, a definite winner. We also tried the famous black cod and the signature sirloin steak on hot rocks, an absolute must for all you meat lovers out there! We finished our meal with a delicate strawberry Crème brûlée and a sinful melt in the middle chocolate soufflé, which was so good I considered seconds…and perhaps thirds. I can happily say that this place definitely delivers on exquisite flavours and unique style, it's not hard to see why Chino Latino's Nottingham was recently awarded its second AA Rosette, and why we definitely give the restaurant full marks all round!

Rita Ora

After taking the music world by storm, and cementing herself as a much loved talent show judge, Rita Ora is now paving her way in the world of cinema. In 2012, DJ Fresh broke records with the first ever drum and bass song to hit Number one in the charts, with the high energy summer anthem, “Hot Right Now”; though many believe that the success of the song can be linked to the sheer power of the vocals, from a newcomer who most had never heard of.

Featured artists come and go, appearing in one or two big tracks then sadly disappearing into obscurity; fortunately for Rita Ora, this was not the case.

The strong spirited and plucky young artist is known for her wild fashion sense, killer vocals and loud and proud nature; Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw, fellow X Factor Judge and close friend to Rita, famously imitates her bawdy London accent on air, though many would be surprised to find out that Ora actually started her life in Kosovo, Yugoslavia. Rita was born on November 26th,1990 in Pristina, Kosovo, during a time when Albanians like her family were oppressed

by dangerous dictator Slobodan Milosevic. When she was just one year old, Rita’s parents packed up the family and fled to England, to escape riots, uprisings and suppression by the Government. Originally Rita Sahatçiu, the star was named after her Grandfather’s favourite classic film star, Rita Hayworth. Rita’s grandfather, Besim Sahatçiu, was actually one of Yugoslavia’s most prolific film directors, showing that talent clearly ran in the family. After creating a new life in England, the Sahatçiu family were able to settle down and live in safety and comfort. Rita’s father, Besnik, decided to change the family’s last name from Sahatçiu, which means watchmaker in Albanian, to Ora, which means hour, as a nod to the original name. Rita began singing when she was just 6 years old, saying that it was what made her happiest, “What drew me most to singing was the fact that I could make a noise that made me feel good about myself. I used to sing poems. It was just about doing something that inspired a reaction. It was

about self-esteem, even back then, at a young age. I made a noise, the reaction was positive. Simple as that. I could sing my feelings. It was a new, exciting way of expressing myself. This brand new communication device. I understood the power of it straight away.” Eventually, she began singing at open mic sessions in London, taking any possible opportunity to share her talent, but it wasn’t until 2007 that she got her first music release; when she appeared in Craig David’s track “Awkward”; then again in 2008’s “Where’s Your Love?” featuring Tinchy Stryder, in which she also appeared in the music video. In 2009, after 3 failed record deals, Rita auditioned to represent England in the Eurovision song contest, thinking that it was her only hope at success, though was eventually persuaded to drop out by her manager, who assured her that this would be a bad decision if she wished to be taken seriously as an artist.

Fortunately, that very year, a meeting was set up with none other than Jay-Z, founder of American label Roc Nation. Rita was almost immediately signed, after having only flown into the states 48 hours earlier, apparently the young Brit had greatly impressed the music mogul. Rita began immediate work on her debut album. In May 2012, Rita’s first single dropped, “R.I.P”, taken from her upcoming album, produced by Chase & Status and featuring Tinie Tempah, the song debuted at the top of the UK Singles Chart, becoming her first solo UK number one. Later that year, just a couple of weeks before the arrival of her debut album, Rita released her second single, “How We Do (Party)”.

After a frantic year of success and sudden fame, there seemed to be no break in sight for Rita Ora. With the help of British songwriter Dev Hynes, she jumped straight into working on her second album, Rita

2013 was made up of a multitude of stage performances including, BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend and Glastonbury, Rita also spent time recording tracks with Calvin Harris, Iggy Azalea and music legend Prince. As well as a strong music career, Rita has also made small appearances in several shows and movies over the years. Her first on screen part was in British Drama Series “The Brief”, when she was only 13 years old. She went on to land small roles in “Spivs”, “90210” and “Fast & Furious 6” but she didn’t get her first recognisable role until the phenomenon that is “Fifty Shades of Grey”, in which Rita played Mia Grey, adoptive younger sister of the infamous Mr. Grey. Rita originally approached the production hoping to contribute to the film’s soundtrack, and instead was asked to audition for the role of Mia Grey. Rita also made an appearance in the boxing drama “Southpaw” alongside Jake Gyllenhaal. Though these have mostly been small roles, we expect to see Rita gaining more substantial parts in the future. Rita has, of course, also spent a fair amount of time on the small screen, in the form of reality talent shows. After being asked

to appear as a guest judge on the ninth season of “The X Factor”, following the departure of Kelly Rowland, Rita went on to coach on the fourth season of “The Voice UK”. Television executives clearly liked what they saw as the same year, it was confirmed that Ora and BBC Radio 1 presenter, Nick Grimshaw, were signed as judges for the twelfth series of “The X Factor”; joining Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole. It was in February of this year that Rita had the true honour of attending the 87th Academy Awards, where she performed the Academy-Award nominated song “Grateful” from the film “Beyond the Lights”. Though she exuded nothing but charm and confidence, Rita was actually terrified, “I’ve never been that scared in my life,” admitted the pop star. “I threw up twice.” Her song, Grateful, sadly lost the best original song award to Glory, from civil rights drama Selma - but Rita isn’t sore about it. “Everyone knew they were going to win,” she says. “Just being on that stage was enough for me.” Her second album is due to drop October 2nd, and with promises of a more mature style, critics and fans alike are excited to hear this new sound; but one thing’s for sure, Rita Ora is a name that we will be hearing for years to come.

The Song shot straight to number one in the UK and Ireland, it was Rita’s second UK number one as a solo artist, and third overall in 2012; not bad for a newcomer. On August 27th that year, her first album finally dropped, titled “Ora”, it of course debuted at the top of the UK Albums chart; soon after Rita was nominated for 3 MTV Music Awards and went on to embark on her own headlining tour.

announced that the record reveals a different angle to a “party girl” and that it would be clearer and have more direction than her debut album.

gyllenhaal Southpaw

Brokeback Mountain

Donnie Darko

Born straight into the film industry and raised around many acting talents, it’s no surprise that Jake Gyllenhaal has become the star he is today. Jake Gyllenhaal was born December 19th 1980, into a film industry family, with his director father Stephen Gyllenhaal, producer and screenwriter mother Naomi Foner, and his older actress sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal. Jake’s extended family is also somewhat Star-Studded, with godfather Paul Newman and godmother Jamie Lee Curtis, imagine the family get togethers…

Jake was eager to get involved in acting from a young age, he was just eleven when he got a role in the 1991 film ‘City Slickers’, as Billy Crystal’s son.

Though Jake was desperate to seek more parts, his parents wouldn’t allow him to audition frequently, as they didn’t want his school work disrupted. Eventually, Stephen started allowing his children to perform in his own films, both Gyllenhaal siblings appeared in the 1993 film ‘A Dangerous Woman.’ Over the next couple of years, Jake played a few small roles in films, whilst continuing his education. As he grew older, his parents became more strict, hoping Jake would go to college rather than seek a career as an actor so early. Jake graduated from

the Harvard-Westlake School in 1998 and went on to study Eastern religions and philosophy at Columbia University, though he continued to act whenever possible. He got his first major role in the 1999 film ‘October Sky’ an adaptation of the Homer Hickam autobiography ‘Rocket Boys’. Jake portrayed a young man from West Virginia striving to win a science scholarship to avoid becoming a coal miner. The film was a great success and Jake’s performance was widely praised, which unsurprisingly only encouraged his ambition to be a serious actor. Much to his parents’ dismay, Jake decided to pursue his career in acting and dropped out of University after just two years. Jake’s decision proved to be a wise one, his performance in ‘October Sky’ had drawn a lot of attention and he was soon cast in several films. The first being the 2001 movie ‘Donnie Darko’, in which Jake played a troubled teen who receives disturbing visions from a tall bunny rabbit named Frank, telling him the world will soon come to an end. The film’s reception was unfortunately hindered by the fact that it was released just after the 9/11 attacks, ‘Donnie Darko’ barely recouped its budget,

though it did receive strong positive reviews from critics and became an instant cult classic. Jake’s next film turned out to be a complete opposite to the dark themes of ‘Donnie Darko’, he played Jimmy Livingstone in ‘Bubble Boy’, a film about a young man (Livingstone), born without an immune system and therefore forced to live his life in the confines of his sterile, protected bedroom. Though when his neighbour and life long crush, Marley Shelton, runs off to Niagara to elope with a typical bad boy rocker, Jimmy decides to take the first risk of his life, he constructs a protective bubble suit and sets off after his love, in a bid to win her affections. The quirky film didn’t gather much attention, though Jake’s performance was once again the highlight of the film. Over the next few years, Jake played a few small roles in films such as ‘The Good Girl’, ‘Lovely and Amazing’ and ‘Highway’, but he was soon faced with one of the biggest roles around at the time, Spiderman. Tobey Maguire was suffering with debilitating back problems and Jake was offered the chance to step in to replace Maguire in

‘Spiderman 2’, which was also set to star Jake’s real life girlfriend, Kirsten Dunst, who Jake had met the previous year, through his actress sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal. Jake decided that he wanted to steer clear of any franchise commitments and instead joined the cast for Roland Emmerich’s ‘The Day After Tomorrow’.

in which he was reunited with ‘Brokeback Mountain’ Co-star Anne Hathaway, where Jake played a prescription drug salesman who falls in love with a woman suffering from Parkinson’s disease, the film received mixed reviews but Jake once again gave a stand out performance, earning him his first Golden Globe Nomination.

A disaster movie of epic proportions, challenging the doubt of global warming and displaying how volatile extreme weather can truly be, LA ravaged by tornadoes and New York frozen under snow; the movie was wild and ridiculous yet extremely enjoyable and successful, grossing $186,740,799. Jake was becoming more recognised in Hollywood, his was a name that most were getting to know; though with fame comes unwanted attention, the media were all too happy to print story after story about a heartbroken Jake, after his girlfriend of two years, Kirsten Dunst, publicly dumped him in 2004.

The following year, the actor earned himself another leading role, in ‘Source Code’ Jake played Colter Stevens, a soldier who wakes up in someone else’s body and discovers he’s part of an experimental government program to find the bomber of a commuter train. The film received rave reviews from critics though seemed to be a love/hate picture for the public.

After his painful break from Dunst, Jake was then turned down for the lead role in the 2005 film ‘Batman Begins’ a role that was eventually given to Christian Bale, it was shaping up to be a bad year for the young actor; fortunately, one of his most iconic roles to date was right around the corner. Ang Lee’s 2005 film ‘Brokeback Mountain’ was controversial and at first Jake was reluctant to take the part, but eventually accepted. The film told the story of two Wyoming Ranchers, Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger, on the titular mountain in the 1960’s; the pair soon realise that they were falling in love with one another and try to bury their taboo feelings. The movie was a great critical and commercial success, winning four Golden Globe awards and seeing both Heath and Jake nominated for Oscars.

In 2012, Gyllenhaal starred alongside Michael Peña in David Ayer’s film ‘End of Watch’ about two Los Angeles street cops. The movie was widely considered to be one of the best cop films in years, which is to be expected after the intense preparation put in for the film; Gyllenhaal took tactical training and participated in actual police drives with co-star Michael Peña. 2013 brought a rather different crime film for Jake, ‘Prisoners’ is a dark thriller centered on the abduction of two little girls, the father of one of the little girls, Hugh Jackman, takes the law into his own hands when he kidnaps the lead suspect and tortures him for information. Jake played the troubled Detective Loki, tasked with finding the girls. The film received mostly strong reviews though seemed to go largely unnoticed by the public. Thanks to Gyllenhaal’s and Jackman’s performances, it is seen as one of the best, though underrated movies of the year by critics.

At this point, if you didn’t know the name Jake Gyllenhaal, you really didn’t know your movies, the young actor was not only known for his growing list of strong performances, but he was also becoming quite the heartthrob. 2010 showed Jake playing the lead in romantic comedy ‘Love and Other Drugs’,

From one physical transformation to another, Jake soon began work on sports drama ‘Southpaw’ which tells the story of pro boxer Billy Hope, who turns to trainer Tick Willis to help him get his life back on track after losing his wife in a tragic accident and his daughter to child

Jake’s next big movie of the year was ‘Jarhead’, based on the book by former marine Anthony Swofford and relating his experiences during Operation Desert Storm. Jake played a marine in a team of scout snipers in the operation, the film showed another side to the war, boredom between action and the intense psychological repercussions that can come from it.

Nightcrawler protective services. For ‘Southpaw’ Jake had to put on the weight he had lost for ‘Nightcrawler’ and then some, putting on a total of 45 pounds of muscle. Speaking to interviewers about the process, Jake said, “I went into full training-camp mode and I got myself in shape to fight. I was literally learning the skills of boxing, which is not only for the body, but also for the mind. You can’t play a boxer and just look like a boxer; you have to believe you can exist in that world.” The film didn’t do as well as most expected, cliche writing and tired plot points didn’t sit well with audiences and it received mostly mixed reviews; critics saying that the only redeeming quality of the film was Gyllenhaal’s excellent portrayal of the broken man. Time and time again, we are faced with two possible outcomes from Jake’s films, either huge critical and commercial successes, or flops only redeemed by Gyllenhaal’s stellar performances; it’s fair to say that through both the good and the bad, Jake proves his raw acting talent. With a few more films set to be released in the coming year, including ‘Everest’ and ‘Demolition’, we expect nothing but greatness from this young actor; and if his stand out performances in films such as ‘Nightcrawler’ are telling us anything, it’s that Jake Gyllenhaal has the potential to become one of the best actors of his generation.

The following year, Jake joined David Fincher’s ‘Zodiac’, based on the real life search for the elusive and mysterious Zodiac killer, a serial murderer that brought fear and uncertainty to the streets of San Francisco in the late sixties and early seventies. The story of the Zodiac killer is infamous to this day, after years of vigilant hunting, the killer was never caught. Jake played Robert Graysmith, a cartoonist at the San Francisco Chronicle, who became obsessed with the case and eventually wrote several books on the subject.

After several movies playing a muscle bound hero, 2014 brought with it a film that called for a total change of look for Gyllenhaal. ‘Nightcrawler’ was the NeoNoir crime thriller in which Jake starred as a former criminal who begins shooting footage of accidents and crimes in LA and selling the content to local news channels. The role was not suited to the big strong hero type, so Jake went through a drastic physical transformation and lost 30 pounds, in order to play the creepy, gaunt character. In interviews, Jake has since said that he was in a constant state of hunger, eating tiny, low calorie meals and running up to 15 miles a day, he even had a bowl of luxury flavoured chewing gum to trick his brain into thinking he was having a meal. The weight loss proved worthwhile, as Gyllenhaal’s powerful performance was made all the more effective by his hollow cheeks, lean frame and sunken eyes. The film was a hit, drawing huge praise from critics and the public alike and Jake earned his second Golden Globe nomination; most consider this to be Jake’s best performance to date.

Day After Tomorrow

DIAMOND LIFE Independence, which the dictionary helpfully defines as - the state of being independent, is certainly a quality that could be applied to both Stuart Thexton and his business. It's also a quality that sits well in a city with a strong independent retail vein, giving both Stuart and Nottingham that critical point of difference.

Now, after more than 30 years in the jewellery business and with his store in The Exchange approaching its 10th Anniversary, he's determined as ever about maintaining that independence. "Before I opened the shop," he says, "I was coming across a lot of smaller jewellery makers who weren't big enough to get in to the larger High Street stores. These were really interesting, artisan designers, often based on the continent, who I thought would be very appealing to customers. Something different.

Choosing a wedding or engagement ring is probably one of the most important decisions a person has to make," explains Stuart. "Not only are they commemorative of the day itself, but also symbolic of a couple's future life together. We offer a bespoke Proposal Collection of engagement rings with certified Diamonds, and our wedding ring suite allows customers to choose from our extensive range in an environment away from the distractions of the main showroom where they can take the time to properly consider their choices."

"I soon realised," he continues, "that opening my own store featuring some of these designers would allow me to offer a genuine alternative."

Customers can choose from yellow, rose or white gold, platinum or palladium, or even a mixture of these, as well as all kinds of traditional and contemporary settings. The rings are all

Sourcing the best selection from niche brands that don't always get the exposure they deserve, Stuart gives them that vital shop window, whilst also giving his customers the opportunity to own wonderfully handcrafted, very different and in some cases unique pieces.

individually handmade by skilled craftspeople in Germany.

As Stuart comments, "Quite simply, we want to offer people a new and easy way to shop. Our ranges vary hugely – everything from everyday wear to special occasion pieces. I didn't want the shop to be known purely as somewhere to go for that oneoff anniversary or birthday present though, I also wanted customers to come and treat themselves without it costing them a fortune."

“We thought through the whole experience from the customer's perspective," says Stuart. "We wanted the store environment to be elegant but not intimidating, whilst complementing the jewellery. Everything, from the lighting to the music was carefully considered, which hopefully combine to give people a memorable shopping experience. The store's location was also critical, and The Exchange was ideal. It's one of the city's most recognisable landmarks and couldn't be more central."

Many women are now opting for costume jewellery as a cheaper alternative. But, as Stuart puts it, why go for that when he can offer something that is better priced and the real thing?

Each piece in the showroom has been carefully selected by Stuart and his team – from colourful gems, diamonds and pearls to contemporary and traditional styles – many of the designer ranges are exclusive to the store in Nottingham and even in the UK. Stuart has also developed a reputation over the last 10 years of sourcing unusual or one-of-a-kind pieces, often featuring rare semi-precious stone such as Sphene or Helidor Tanzanite. It may be something of a trite saying these days, but something for everyone really does apply here. In addition to these collections, the store also has a dedicated Wedding Suite, situated downstairs from the main showroom.

Attention to detail is the cornerstone of Stuart's approach to the business - from the handmade jewellery boxes and bespoke bags to the store itself.

As he nears the store's 10th Anniversary, Stuart's independence is still a big part of his approach to the business. “When I opened the store in 2006, the heart of the idea was to offer customers something different. I believed then, and still do today, that jewellery is an expression of someone's individuality. Being independent allows me to feature smaller designers that you won't find on every high street, giving our clients choices they can't easily get elsewhere." Many people ask me if I have any tips on how to approach someone or break into a group at a networking event, others want to know how to break away from a conversation with someone without sounding rude, so here is my guide...

Enter... 1.Remember you are 'Farming' NOT 'Hunting'- It is important to keep in the back of your mind at all times, that you are networking in order to build good quality relationships with people, with view to doing business with them in the near future- NOT selling to them in the room. 2.Be honest- Explain you're new to networking /this event and you may be surprised to hear that that person is too, creating a commonality immediately, which will inevitably break the ice. 3."How did you hear about this event?" This is a nice follow on from tip number 2 and gets the conversation going straight away. 4."What business are you in?" Be straight forward and ask - but remember to make eye contact and be genuinely interested. 5.Pay particular interest in who you are speaking to- This follows on from tip number 4, people see right through disingenuity and it will go against you from the offset. 6."So what bought you here today?" A great conversation startersimple. 7."How has your day been/how is it going?" *Smile* - Pretty much anything will be well received if it is delivered with a smile (within reason!). 8."Do you mind if I say hello and introduce myself, I'm new here?" Again straight to the point but a soft approach, laying the onus on the other person to then have to respond. 9."Wow its busy isn't it, do you mind if I join you here in the quiet corner?" This one is always good if of course firstly the event is busy and secondly it may reach people similar to you who are a little more shy or new to networking. 10."What's your story?" "So how did you get into (your profession)?" This sounds better than the commonly said 'So what do you do'? 11."What a beautiful venue- have you been here before?" (Of course only use this if it really is a beautiful venue, this can be tailored to other observations about the venue or food itself however in order to break the ice. 12.Look for mutual likenesses/commonalities- as suggested in some of the above tips. 13.Pay a genuine compliment (observe the person & ensure it is genuine, don't overdo it and don't do this more than once at the same event. 14.Mutual contacts- "we've met before"... "I think we have met before"... "Do you know?" (slot in the name of someone you think you both know to get the conversation flowing... 15."How long have you been a member of this group?" 16."What do you most like about what you do?" (people love to speak about themselves, so this one will work in most situations). 17."What types of businesses tend to send you the best referrals?" This shows that you are thinking about their business as of the moment you meet them. 18."What can I do to help you?"/ "Who are you looking to meet here today?" This shows that you are interested in helping them and that you are a good connector of business. 19."What do you enjoy doing when you're not working?" (get to know them as a person/build a relationship/find common interests).

20.Following on from tips 17 and 18 'Work the room' - think about who else is in the room who they may like to meet, this way you can break away once you have made that introduction, when you are ready to exit the conversation. 21."It's been a pleasure speaking with you/meeting you, if I meet a good contact for you I'll be sure to send them your way!" 22."Well I don't want to take up too much more of your time - it was lovely to meet you" (swap cards) and wish them a great rest of night. *Remember being a connecter of people, stands you in good stead to be remembered and if all else fails, say your mouth is dry from all the talking and you need to go to the bar for another drink (then make sure you do!) www.rsvipnetwork.couk

Medical News...

Huge breakthrough in the fight against malaria. The world's first malaria vaccine has passed safety checks and is now ready to be approved for use in Africa. The European Medicines Agency gave a positive scientific opinion after assessing its safety and effectiveness. It represents a 'green light' for the Mosquirix jab, developed by GlaxoSmithKline. The World Health Organization will consider later this year whether to recommend it for children, among whom trials have yielded mixed results. Malaria kills around 584,000 people a year worldwide, most of them children under five in sub-Saharan Africa. ‘Dream come true' Mosquirix is the first against a parasitic infection in humans. Dr Ripley Ballou, head of research at GSK vaccines, said: "This is a hugely significant moment. I've been working on this vaccine for 30 years and this is a dream come true." The company has not revealed the price of the vaccine, but has pledged not to make a profit from it. Depression and the diet A Mediterranean diet could stave off depression as well as heart disease, suggests new research. The study, involving more than 15,000 people, shows a diet loaded with fruit, vegetables, beans and nuts and olive oil, with low levels of processed meats, could prevent the onset of depression. Researchers, whose findings were published in the journal BMC Medicine, looked at the impact of three major diets on mental health: the Pro-vegetarian Dietry Pattern; the Alternative Healthy Eating Index-2010 and the Mediterranean diet. Meat, sweets and other sources of animal fats and trans and saturated fatty acids scored low, while nuts, fruits, veg and other sources of omega-4 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals, scored highly. Ten years later, the participants were asked to complete another survey on their diets. A total of 1,550 participants reported a clinical diagnosis of depression or had used antidepressant drugs since the study began. The Alternative Healthy Eating Index-2010 was found to be the associated with the greatest reduction of the risk of depression, but most of its effect could be associated with the major elements of the Mediterranean Diet. 'The protective role is ascribed to the foods' nutritional properties, where nuts, legumes, fruits and vegetables, all sources of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals, could reduce the risk of depression.' Tai Chi for Health Tai chi can relieve some of the most crippling symptoms of disabling conditions such as osteoarthritis, heart disease and chronic breathing problems in older people, a study shows. The ancient Chinese system of callisthenics, which combines slow movements with deep breathing exercises, led to improvement in the physical function and muscle strength of people in their mid-50s to their mid-70s with those ailments or breast cancer. The findings should encourage health professionals to prescribe tai chi for patients with osteoarthritis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), the Canadian authors say in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Public Health England said tai chi was a valuable boost to physical activity. “Keeping physically active at any age is important for health, especially as you get older. Simple exercises like tai chi can be beneficial for mental health and wellbeing as well as building the confidence and stability,” said Dr Justin Varney, its national lead for adult health and wellbeing. “This contributes to the recommended 150 minutes a week of moderate activity and two sessions a week of muscle strengthening and balance exercises for older adults.” Gps are being encouraged to "prescribe" tai chi for people with these conditions.

The New Jaguar F PACE

It's the British brand's first SUV and it's designed to be sporty while still giving drivers a high seating position to see what's going on ahead. It'll be available with four-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive.

That sportiness comes from the FPace's relative light weight – 80 per cent of the F-Pace's body is aluminium, meaning the lightest model (the twowheel-drive 178hp diesel) weighs 1,665kg. For comparison, the lightest 2.0-litre diesel version of the Audi Q5 weighs 1,820kg, and the lightest Porsche Macan (perhaps the F-Pace's sportiest SUV rival) comes in at 1,770kg – and that's for a petrol model.

It remains a large luxury SUV that's clearly designed more for on-road use rather than off-roading like its Land Rover stablemates, however it comes with Land Rover's Terrain Response technology, which can detect what surface you're driving on and adjust the stability control system and optional four-wheel-drive system to suit. It also has torque vectoring as standard to help you accelerate hard out of corners and make the most of the F-Pace's sporty credentials.

Jaguar F-Pace engines The F-Pace engine choice consists of a 178hp 2.0-litre diesel (in four-wheeldrive or rear-wheel-drive formats with a manual gearbox, or four-wheel-drive with an automatic gearbox); an automatic 237hp 2.0-litre petrol rearwheel drive version; an automatic 296hp 3.0-litre diesel 4×4; and 335 or 375hp flavours of the 4×4 petrol V6.

Jaguar F-Pace performance

Jaguar F-Pace performance Jaguar has confirmed that the fastest version of the F-Pace at launch will come with a 375hp supercharged V6 petrol engine – it'll propel the car to 60mph in 5.1 seconds on the way to a limited top speed of 155mph.

Jaguar F-Pace interior and boot space The F-Pace will have 650 litres of boot space, and Jaguar promises that five adults will be able to sit with complete comfort, and 'generous' levels of head and knee room.

New infotainment The F-Pace will come with a giant 10.2inch touchscreen to control the sat-nav and music. Called InControl Touch Pro, it's going to be extremely fast and responsive (tech fans will be pleased to hear it uses a zippy solid-state hard drive and quad core processor), and

EXPECTED RESULTS Model: First Edition Engine: 3.0-litre V6 Power: 300bhp 0-62mph: 5.8 secs Top Speed: 150mph

eight mobile devices will be able to connect to the car's built-in wi-fi hotspot. Jaguar's digital dashboard screen makes an appearance in the F-Pace too, replacing the traditional rev and speed dials with a 12.3-inch HD screen, which can show the sat-nav map as well as the usual speedo and rev counter. Much like Audi's Virtual Cockpit.

The headlights and front grille could have been taken from either Jaguar's XE or XF saloon and retain the

Huge alloy wheels up to 22-inches will be available, and the headlights will be full LED units to help you see far more clearly at night.

Jaguar F-Pace driving Jaguar says the F-Pace will be very good to drive on tarmac thanks to its double wishbone suspension. This configuration is used on most sports cars and gives the best grip and steering feel. This, combined with the road-biased four-wheel-drive system and the quick-acting electric power

steering should mean the F–Pace is as fun to drive as the best sporty SUV on sale, the Porsche Macan. The aluminium body Jaguar has created for the F-Pace is incredibly stiff, and the car uses an electrically controlled system to measure its body movement 100 times a second, and wheel movement 500 times a second. This information is fed into the suspension's brain to make sure it rides comfortably, yet can attack corners when you want to. The F-Pace will also be available with what Jaguar calls Configurable Dynamics – first used in the F-Type. It allows drivers to customise the settings for the throttle sensitivity, automatic gearbox shifting speed, steering weight and also the adaptive dampers – if you pick them from the options sheet. Prices start from £34,170.00 otr for the entry level Prestige, 2.0 Diesel manual.

Traditional SUV styling points remain – the enlarged bodywork, raised shoulderline and a brash front end – but unlike some rivals, the F-Pace has a sleekness to its shape that puts it firmly at the sportier end of the SUV spectrum, alongside the Porsche Cayenne.

imposing image – perfect for clearing the outside lane of a motorway. The rear lights could have been taken directly from the F-Type sports car. Unlike its ruggedest of rivals, the FPace sits lower to the ground – while this limits the car's ability to get over big inclines, it means its centre of gravity is closer to the ground, improving handling and grip, while reducing body roll.
