Foreign Language Lawrence Academy students are required to complete two consecutive levels of any one foreign language throughout their time at LA, regardless of the level at which the student begins in the language. A placement test is required for all students continuing to study a language but is not needed if the student will be studying the language for the first time.

French French 1 • 301 • Year Long is year-long course introduces students to the study of French though an immersive setting and a focus on proficiency. e aim of the course is to teach students to speak, understand, read, and write the language, with a focus on communicative competence; the course also introduces students to cultural and geographic information about the French-speaking world. rough task-based learning of thematic units, students are exposed to real-life situations and learn to navigate them appropriately. Students are assessed using a combination of e American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and the Common European Framework of Reference (CECR) standards.

French 2 • 302 • Year Long Prerequisite: French 1. e year-long French 2 course expands upon the material in French 1. Students will significantly broaden their vocabulary and ability to communicate in various scenarios, and will continue to learn in an immersive setting with a focus on proficiency. At this novice/intermediate level, grammatical structure is analyzed more specifically, though the emphasis remains on inductive learning and the development of oral proficiency. is course stimulates cultural awareness and the development of writing skills. Students further develop their skills using a combination of ACTFL and CECR standards.

French 3 • 303 • Year Long Prerequisite: French 2. In this year-long course, students consolidate and expand on complex points of French grammar while developing their reading ability through a variety of cultural readings, informal dialogues, and short stories. Emphasis is placed on oral and written communication while continuing the immersive environment necessary to learning. Students further develop their skills using a combination of ACTFL and CECR standards.

Honors French 3 • 308 • Year Long Prerequisite: An average of B+/ A- in French 2 and a favorable departmental recommendation after a formal evaluation. Students in this year-long course consolidate and expand on complex points of French grammar while developing their reading ability through a variety of cultural readings, informal dialogues, and short stories. Emphasis is placed on oral and written communication while continuing the immersive environment necessary to learning. Students also further develop their skills using a combination of ACTFL and CECR standards. Honors French 3 students are assessed using higher levels of proficiency and are required to produce work of a higher standard than their French 3 counterparts; they are also held to a higher standard in their class participation, critical thinking, and communicative ability.
