alking about summer in Mazarrón is meant to come back (again) over the same problems caused by the huge mass and volume of floating population (let's call it like this) that during the months of July and August make Puerto become a little city, with all it requires. And while we are working hard in order to develop all kind of activities so that tourists can have a complement for their stay, or Mazarrón could offer something else than beach tourism, on the other hand, we feel overwhelmed for that mass that always takes us by surprise, even knowing that it happens exactly the same year after year. The matter is that, as years pass by, we are bearing the encumbrance of so many useless decisions which have been accumulated with the pass of time. To show you this, I can mention the example of those huge bins set up by the previous quadripartite, during that wonderful management they developed for the four years of government in Mazarrón, and thanks to which we now have those “stinking monsters” scattered all around the streets in town, puerto and rural villages. Bins that, to make matters worse, need to be continuously cleaned and maintained so that the horrible smell does not reach the limit to have to evacuate those people living near them. Then there is the matter of politeness, because it seems that when we are on holiday, everything is fair, and we do not even obey traffic signs. So then, we find those lost corners on beaches and streets where it seems they have set a dumping site. There you can find everything, chairs, fridges, ovens and all kind of furniture. That is also a part of that mass we have every year. On the one hand, a little more of politeness in general should be claimed as well as it would be nice if we were able to foresee these situations because we know they will happen for sure. So I see that the solution to this basic matter needs the interest of all. Regarding the activities, which are greatly followed and of interest for a part of the public, I will stress out the fact of having dedicated the summer drama festival, started this year, to Rafael García Castillo. A celebrity for all those belonging to the cultural world in our municipality, for his dedication and fondness of drama for many years and also a warm-hearted family doctor of many locals. A reason why to have been awarded in a tribute held in last June to acknowledge his altruist dedication and work for thirty years which has set up the grounds of the current drama in Mazarrón. Finally, we would have to assess the results of the tourist occupancy rate, considered complete this summer by the official statistics. I would like to add the turn announced in the local economy by the introduction of new hotel places which, for good or bad, will affect the general level of the municipality. That is clear. And alongside all that, after the real “plays” we watched at the Municipal Plenary Sessions, I miss a lot what we have heard so many times and seen very few times for the last years, that is, a responsible opposition. How miserable is to see how they remain sat down for four years while waiting next elections to be more fortunate. Meanwhile, everything is reduced to a monthly show, to make noise and to do something from time to time. In that sense, there are some people who keep themselves active, both to make comments and to send press notes. That responsible opposition is what gives us the other necessary perspective of things and allows residents to be aware of what is happening in the reality. Having said that and back to the main topic, this is just starting and there still much summer left. Some days to rest for many, and to work hard for others because of those activities that are getting started, some new. Before finishing these lines, I would like to highlight the “I Festival Flamenco” which I am sure it would be a wake-up call this season.
New street sweeper and increase of cleaning at night times, main novelties for this summer
The Town Council has started a new Integral Plan to Improve Street Cleaning Service by focusing, mainly, on the works carried out by a street sweeper, with 1,000 litres capacity, which with pressure water washes the busiest areas and the promenades of Puerto, Castellar and Bolnuevo three times a week . Performance is completed with the work of 4 street sweeper machines, 4 hand blowers, and 15 workers which are employed daily in Puerto de Mazarrón. Works which are also being carried out, as the Councillor of Services, Domingo Hernández, has claimed, at the different residential points around the local coast, starting at the first line
and getting inland. As something new, this summer the cleaning control is increased at night times by hiring one chief employer at the streets Hernán Cortés, Mayor and Puerto Deportivo area in Puerto de Mazarrón between midnight and 6 am. In this sense, Hernández also asks for the collaboration of business owners to make a good use of bins. Another new thing is the work of a sweeper machine in Cañada de Gallego three times a week, as well as in other rural areas with urban centre. This way, Mazarrón is facing a high season when its regular population gets tripled.
Diving baptism and cetacean watching for the young Youth has arranged two maritime activities aimed at young aged from 14 to 35 and which encourage the respect to the sea environment at the same time they offer fun and learning. On 6th July and 2nd August, there will be the possibility to experience diving baptism in the sea. Furthermore, on 23rd and 30th June and 13th
and 20th August, there will a boat ride around the Mazarrón coast to watch cetacean (dolphins, pilot whales...).
