HELLO dulhans, Welcome to the first edition of 2019! The past year was an exciting year for our brand. We hosted our fifth annual Lavish Dulhan Bridal Show in Toronto and launched our Bridal Show and magazine in the West Coast. As Canada’s only coast-to-coast magazine and show, we are excited to create more inspirational content than ever before to help create your dream wedding. In every edition we look for weddings filled with unique details and inspirational eye-candy and share our couples’ stories to inspire you in your wedding journey. The Tying the Knot features eight couples that share how they first met, how they got engaged and how the inspiration behind their wedding. From colourful sangeets, traditional weddings, and luxurious receptions there is something for everyone to fall in love with. The fashion, beauty and style shoots in this edition draw inspiration from the natural elements – fire, earth, water and wind. From the swoon worthy looks in After Midnight to the dramatic looks in Electrifying Elements, this edition showcases the elements both literally and abstractly to peak your imagination. The Chic & Unique feature takes it a step further by creating an entire setting to inspire you. We were so excited to be working with the team at The Beauty Concept by Shirley Wu and MPSG Weddings to create the new face of Lavish Dulhan. The cover image plays with the element of wind and turned out better then we could have imagined. We hope you enjoy this edition and find the inspiration you’re looking for and much more. I was studying in London, UK at the time when Simran messaged trying to start a conversation. I didn’t think too much about it since he was my cousin’s best friend but little did I know that would be the start of something special. We continued talking every day despite the time difference. I was suppose to visit Toronto for Christmas but I decided to come back three weeks earlier. He was very eager to meet and requested meeting the same night I landed. It was difficult to explain to my parents my reason to go see my “friend” at 9:00pm after a long flight but I managed to go on this dessert date to Moxie’s. We stayed there until they closed and then sat in the car for hours talking. And that was just the beginning of our journey. The proposal was very spontaneous! I was at work and he called to say that we were going for a three day photoshoot but kept the destination a surprise because we had a few stops on our way. On the second day I was told the location was the Golden Gate Bridge so it would be an extra special shoot because of the scenic views and my outifts had been chosen for me, so I didn’t doubt a thing when Simran suggested getting hair and makeup done.The shoot was going well, we were taking photos on the beach overlooking the bridge and all of a sudden I heard a violin behind me; and then I turned around and there he was on his knees holding the ring. It was a truly magical moment that I will cherish forever.

From the floors to the ceiling to the tables everything for our reception was white; the floating candles in vases of water, lush florals and gold detailing added some warmth. Our custom dance floor was covered with a white vinyl wrap and had our names in gold chrome.The statement backdrop complimented the hanging chandeliers and florals beautifully. We wanted our reception to be modern and classy, and it was just that! We added a few personal touches such as signature drinks at the main bar, a bar on the dance floor, media walls and LED displays for our guests to take photos. Our vendors turned our vision into reality, giving the whole environment a surreal feeling that our guests loved!

As clichĂŠ as it may sound, we first met time at a wedding, but no, we weren't sitting at the singles table. Vick's sister married into my group of family friends a few years prior to us meeting. Over time, I became very close to her and heard a lot about her family, including her younger brother, Vick. Similarly, Vick had been hearing all about a girl named Shivani (and how incredibly perfect she is, I'm sure). We finally met at a wedding, shared a few funny anecdotes about his sister, and laughed about the stares we were starting to get from our families when they saw us hanging out at each event. About a week later, I received a Facebook friend request from Vick Gandhi and the rest is history. A few of our good friends are avid hikers.They often told us stories about impressive parks in the area, and Vick was dying to try it out. Finally, one Saturday afternoon I received a text from him saying he planned out a beginner's hike for us, I reluctantly agreed. He came across Albion Falls in Hamilton.The falls were swarmed with people, so Vick convinced me to explore further into the trail where he heard there were some beautiful cliffs. Once we were in a more secluded area, we climbed the side of a large cliff and Vick asked me to face the sunset so he could take a picture of me staring over the horizon. I was happy to comply, thinking I might at least get a nice instagram post out of this. He fell silent for a minute and when I turned back around, he was on one knee with a ring in his hand.Thinking back, maybe sitting on the edge of a cliff, 50 feet in the air, was not the safest place for a "down on one knee" surprise proposal, but nothing else really mattered in that moment.

When we first started planning the wedding, we only had two things in mind, we wanted a traditional Indian wedding, but in a non-traditional space. There were quite a few elements that we loved at The Symes; the brick walls, high exposed ceilings and polished concrete floors. It felt like we were in a chic New York loft. Our parents didn't completely understand our choice (especially the exposed ceilings), but agreed to let us live out our imaginations. We had seen a few pictures of other beautiful events that took place in this space with grand florals and monochromatic palettes, but we weren't ready to let go of the traditional Indian wedding look. With the help of GPS Decors, we decided on deep warm colours and traditional Indian elements, including marigolds and lanterns. For the mandap, we didn't want to be too closed off from the crowd, so we asked to keep the four corners as open as possible, but really bring the decor and draping elements from above.

The first time we saw Hotel X, we were dressed in hard hats and construction boots as the venue was still being built. It was tough to picture all the details at that time, but the beautiful location and the stunning view captured our attention. We had a few words in mind for how we wanted this evening to feel: warm and romantic. Our goal was to make this an intimate family and friends event, rather than a grand ballroom affair. As such, the colours were a deep array of reds, maroons and purples. Sarah from Precious Flowers completely understood the vibe we were hoping to achieve and created incredible arrangements, topped with beautiful candles that fit perfectly in the colour scheme. Our favourite element from the decor was the waterfall of flowers falling to the floor on each of our harvest tables. Not only did it really make the colours pop, but it also gave the venue a more romantic feel.

We first met when we were both seventeen. We had been assigned to the same residence building when we started at McMaster University and met in one of the study rooms, started talking and over time became friends. We would see one another for the next year or so at social events, study groups and then two years later, we started dating and the rest is history! I home cooked an Italian meal and set it up in our apartment – like a date we had six years ago – when I cooked for her for the first time. I told her how much she meant to me, and asked her to marry me. For the wedding, we knew we wanted an outdoor venue, with flutes and shehnayi playing in the background. It was a huge gamble with the outdoor venue, but we were adamant on making it happen. For the colours, we wanted to stick with traditional reds and gold as ever since I was a younger, I knew my wedding outfit would be red and a very traditional dulhan look.

The colour scheme for the clothing was blue – everyone from our immediate family and some extended family, bridesmaids, and groomsmen wore shades of blue, and it all came together really beautifully in pictures. My cocktail hour dress was navy blue but for the reception I changed into a champagne rose shimmer gown, which really contrasted the blues and complimented our gorgeous decor perfectly.

I first met Chandni in high school because one of my best friends at the time was dating her sister. We didn’t connect or hang out much over those years, and really only saw each other at social gatherings. Years later, we reconnected at a destination wedding in Mexico. We both happened to sign up for an excursion to Chichen Itza which was a 3 hour drive from our resort. Being out late the night before, we both were on the fence on whether or not to go and yet we somehow managed to make it onto the bus and happened to sit next to each other. While everyone was trying to catch up on sleep, we were busy chatting away. This was probably the first time we had a real conversation in years, and it was the start of a new friendship.

When thinking of where to propose, I knew there would be no better place than High Park; our favourite picnic spot. Every morning I found myself tracking the peak bloom predictions as the cherry blossoms only come out for a week once a year, so the timing was crucial. I took a gamble and finally told Chandni that I had an outdoor work social at High Park. She made it very clear while we were dating how important her attire for this day would be; I figured a work social would give her enough of a hint so she would come dressed accordingly. Once Chandni arrived, we walked over to the cherry blossoms by the water hand in hand. As I started to propose, she began to tear up and kept asking questions. I held her hand tight, got down on one knee, and the rest is history.

The ceremony design transported guests into a woodland setting complete with distressed wood, suspended foliage/floral and flickering candlelights. A faux cobblestone aisleway decal completed the look.The colour palette was fresh, airy and natural.The floral design included lush wisteria, colourful roses and several varieties of foliage.The focal point of the ceremony was the 24’ suspended mandap dripping with foliage and florals.The aim was to create a ceremony design that eliminated obstructions to the guests sightlines and yet transport guests into an outdoor garden setting. From the beginning of our planning process, we both decided to steer away from the traditional South Asian colour palette. Chandni had always imagined her wedding outfit to be a lighter tone, such as a pink or peach, and really wanted us to work around the non-traditional colours for an Indian wedding. We wanted something that showcased our personalities while still staying true to our vision and overall look. When the time came to deciding our outfits, we opted for lighter colours by going with blush tones to create a softer look which we both really liked.

The reception design was inspired by the crisp and modern design influences of gallery settings.The overall design concept was to visually lower the ceiling in the large convention space to create a cozy, yet serene atmosphere.This was done using over 600 square feet of white fringe. The family tables were mirrored and featured towering foliage compositions of monstera and white phalaenopsis orchids. Sparkling candlelights and gold leaf charger plates completed the look. One of our favourite details would have to be our gorgeous wedding cake! Chandni has quite the sweet tooth so finding the perfect cake was a top priority. Keeping our guests in mind, we wanted to find an eggless cake that would taste as good as it looks and Zehra’s cake was nothing short of amazing!

Ultimately, our love for teeth led us to each other. Krizia and I ended up at the same dental school in Boston and met for the first time at a school function. After a first date to go play tennis, we immediately hit it off. It was really important that I propose in the city where we met, so I decided to do it on the Charles River in Boston. Krizia is Italian and the fact that Boston had gondola rentals was perfect. I tricked her into thinking my sister was coming to visit and that I wanted us to take her on a boat ride to show her the city. Last minute, I told her my sister could no longer come and that we'd have to do the boat ride alone. We went to the river, where a violinist was waiting for us on the gondola. Once we were on our way, I got down on one knee in front of her and proposed. It was raining off and on that entire day, but for those twenty minutes we were on the boat, there was not a cloud in the sky. It was seriously the best moment.

We both really like modern, clean looking decor and neutrals have always captured our attention. So we decided to go with a more tropical feel for the Hindu ceremony. The Manor did not need much decor since the venue is so lush. We definitely wanted to play on that natural outdoor vibe. For the Western ceremony and reception, we still wanted a modern feel, but with a romantic touch. White and cream flowers with cascading greenery against the clean lines and textured walls of Chateau le Parc was exactly what we wanted. Marrying into a different culture was super exciting for many reasons, especially getting to have not one, but two weddings with completely different looks. We wanted to make sure we embraced both cultures – complete with the traditional red lehenga and sherwani on one day, while doing a white gown and tuxedo on the other. We both got inspiration from magazines (like this one!) and instagram. While the lehenga was red, it had light pink embroidery, which was the same pink embroidery on the sherwani. These little details allowed us to add our own touch and really tied the outfits together.

One of my favorite moments was having my uncle, who is like my second father, walk me half way down the aisle to my father, who then walked me the rest of the way to Ashish. It was nice to be able to have both very important people be a part of this ceremony. I also had both of my grandfather’s tools of their trade displayed at the altar which was very special for me to have. My one grandfather was a carpenter and so we used his chisel and hammer, and my other grandfather was a tailor, so his sewing shears were selected.

We would have to say the surprise entertainment from both sides of the family was the most touching. Ashish’s sisters and cousins (who had rehearsed for months) performed with professional dancers of different styles during the reception. The cool thing about it was that traditional Indian styles of dance were choreographed to contemporary Western songs, while styles of dance like ballet and jazz were choreographed to Indian songs. It was so beautiful and well fitting considering we had a dual-culture wedding. My side had two family friends perform the first dance song instead of playing the original track. The wife sang, while her husband played the guitar. The guitar was such a sweet touch which had been refurbished and had actually belonged to my grandfather who has passed away.

We first met at an industry event at the Art Gallery of Ontario. I went with a friend who knew Victor. Our mutual friend introduced us and the three of us went out to have a drink after. At the end of the night Victor asked me for my number and asked me out the next day. It took some time for me to reply, but two weeks later we had our first date and the rest is history. The proposal was very sweet and intimate. Victor is a great cook and surprised me with all of my favourite things – homemade mushroom risotto and champagne with Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men playing in the background. It was absolutely perfect!

Our reception was all about our friends and family. We wanted to use this opportunity to honour them and show our love. We wanted to evoke the feeling of an intimate garden party – but with over 300 people! We started our planning with the venue. We went to a few places, but the moment we went to Evergreen Brickworks we knew that it was for us. Most of our guests had never been there, so it was amazing to introduce them to a new spot in Toronto. Originally we started out wanting a very clean look with minimal colour, but Paras, our event designer, found a beautiful blue charger plate and suggested it to us. We loved the look of it and decided to add more colour and elements to add the ambiance of the venue.

We met in 2009 during our frosh week at Wilfrid Laurier University. We were moving into our campus residence and just so happened to be placed on the same floor just down the hall from one another. The first time we met was as we walked to a party with a group of friends from our residence. Trevor could hear Tanya making jokes with one of her roommates and thought she was funny, so he took a chance and walked up to her. We immediately felt a connection with each other as we started trading silly comments and jokes.The two of us spent the whole party talking and we found out that we were in the same program, and would have many classes together. Over the next few weeks we were inseparable, we did everything together – most people thought we came to university dating already! It was our 7.5 year anniversary so Trevor planned a morning at a spa and then lunch in the Distillery District – one of our favourite areas in Toronto. During our walk over to have lunch, Tanya stopped in front of the the big red heart sculpture to take a selfie (as she always did), while Trevor started giving a very sweet speech as he got down on one knee and asked Tanya to be his wife!

For our reception we wanted to design a room that would look elegant, modern and amaze people when they first entered with all of the attention to detail. We knew our guests were a bunch of party animals so we made a large focal bar across from our main backdrop, and connecting them we had a large dance floor covered with a vinyl decal to bring them together; creating a social area in the hopes that we would get everyone dancing all night – and it definitely worked out well! We loved the look of the all white with gold chrome accents so we carried that through most of the decor. We added in pops of colour with large floral compositions of pinks and burgundy and also with silk burgundy napkins and gold charger plates. Our favourite detail was definitely the custom backdrop. We were so grateful for the hard work and time Tanya’s father had put into making it the unique and stunning piece we had envisioned!

Jasleen and I first met in elementary school in Grade 5. We went to different high schools and met again at Brock University where we both were in the same program. We started talking in one of our classes and would always study together. By the end of first year we had become best friends and started dating. I went away to England for law school after University, but it only made our relationship stronger. I was finishing law school when Jasleen told me she was coming to visit me in England and I decided this would be the perfect time to propose. I proposed at the Pont de Bir-Hakeim bridge, which had been featured in the film Inception because we both love cinema and we took pictures under the bridge with the Eiffel Tower in the back drop.

We both wanted all white decor for our reception but something out of the box and different. Raj from Dream Party Decor and Simmi from Biji Planners really helped us in coming up with the overall look. Seeing it the day of, we were absolutely amazed with all the detail and the way the decor and florals all came together. Being behind the scenes you miss a lot, waiting for the big entrance, either in a back room or backstage. We would have loved to have a TV during these hidden moments to experience the entire wedding vicariously through a live stream camera. But we still enjoyed our day and one of our most memorable moments during the reception was our first dance; it was everything we had imagined it would be.
