Jesus het eenvoudig gesê: “ Volg My”. True discipleship brings about a God driven transformation to the likeness of Jesus. Grace does not turn us into puppets on a string. In fact, we should be energized by God's Grace to do all we can to experience all we may of Him. We are saved by Grace alone, but we need to actively pursue holiness, knowledge, intimacy, fellowship, obedience and love. It will be impossible to grow if you doubt your own salvation. As they walk in His footsteps they imitated their Master and their lives reflected His teachings, His lifestyle and His values. Looking at the Lord's first disciples we see sacrifice, exercise, practice, effort, learning, making mistakes, starting over, frustration and dedication. Today we want intimacy without effort, blessings without dedication, fruit without abiding and success without discipline. This is the problem – we want. Many Christians have become focused on ME. My health, wealth, ministry, popularity, painless life and personal emotional fulfilment have taken centre stage. As ons voor 'n christelike boekwinkel gaan staan sal ons baie keer sien die titels van “the 50 bestsellers” quick fix solutions, financial success, power filled ministry, marriages. It is all about Me. Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in Te midde van dit alles hoor ons die ego van Jesus se woorde in: order to be seen by them, for then Matt.16:24-25 Toe sê Jesus vir sy dissipels: As iemand agter My aan wil you will have no reward from kom, moet hy homself verloën en sy kruis opneem en My volg. 25 Want your Father who is in heaven. elkeen wat sy lewe wil red, sal dit verloor; maar elkeen wat sy lewe om My ontwil verloor, sal dit vind. Matthew 6:1

Jesus Tweet

It is all about Jesus! And you prove your discipleship by two things: love and obedience – which leads to bearing fruit. Discipleship is an exercise of choice = intentionally obeying God! Discipleship starts with a relationship. By applying Discipline, a disciple moves deeper into this cycle of knowing Christ, loving Christ, following Christ and obeying Christ. It is in this process the disciple starts to experience a change of lifestyle and character. They lack discipline and they don't accept leadership easily. They do things their way and leave injured people behind and they too disappear or become dishearted and defeated. Mat 13:18 Wat is nou belangrik? By exposing ourselves to God's Presence, God's Will and God's Power, we find ourselves becoming like Him - Being a true disciple

BRIEF TESTIMONY:

BRIEF TESTIMONY:

I do not even remember the first time I heard the name of Jesus. I was fortunate to be raised by born-again Christian parents who taught me about Jesus from the day I was born. We were always active in church. That heritage was such a rich blessing, but it also made it easy to take some things for granted. Sometimes Jesus and His church became routine, almost a habit that never really required any attention. As I have battled sin and Satan through the years, I have renewed my faith in the Son of God. As I got older and wrestled with how to instil faith in my own children, I began to discover all over again the excitement of knowing Jesus. I realise that of all the decisions in life, the only one that truly matters is this: what will I do with Jesus?

In the past attending church for me was habitual and not out of conviction. God's grace and conversion came for me on the 8 May 2006 during a Deon Hockey evangelical outreach at the Light and Life church, which is now my place of worship.

Today I am active in the Body of Christ. It is a place of worship, of ministry, of service, and a place of refuge in a world that just does not make sense. Some of the closest relationships I have are those with my church family. These brothers and sisters are not perfect, but they are forgiven believers committed to following Jesus. We also need to be courageous in all we do and encounter in life. Without courage, our lives will not reach the full potential they are meant to and we will not see the promises of God nor experience the gifts He is prepared to entrust to us.

Accepting Jesus as my personal Saviour and Redeemer, He liberated and renewed my mind and put a new spirit within me. Being restored through His saving grace I am now a new creation and the old has passed away. Whatever happened in our passed cannot be changed but we can ensure a better future by making the right choices today. As believers, we need to get to the place where we're convinced that only God can make the difference in our lives. The time has come to do what we are called for and stop getting caught up in things that will confuse us, complicate matters or blur our vision. My heart's desire is that 'me and my house' will serve the Lord in spirit and in truth.

Daarom is jy nou gesond. Gaan in vrede “.

Geloof bring God in werking. Hoe desperaat is jy vandag?

Week 2 1 Samuel 2:1 (Lewende Bybel) “. . .Ek is opgewonde oor wat U, Here, gedoen het. . . ek is so bly dat U my gehelp het. . .”

IS JY DESPERAAT VIR JESUS? deur Connie Botes

Week 3 OPERASIE TYD Psalm 139:23 “God, kyk of U my kan vertrou. Toets my gesondheid. Kyk of ek eerlik is. . .”

Welkom by die geestelike operasie tafel !! MAAR dis wanneer God weet “ EK IS HIER MY KIND, EK IS IN BEHEER, EK SAL JOU NOOIT BEGEWE EN VERLAAT NIE, JY IS MYNE!!!!!”

Week 4 GOD IS OOK DESPERAAT OM SY VADER LIEFDE AAN ONS TE OPENBAAR 1 Joh. 4:14 (Lewende Bybel)”. . . .”

Jesus vra vandag vir jou en my: “ Ken jy My intiem en persoonlik, of weet jy net van My”. 5

How “Yeshua” Became “Jesus”

T

he first letter in the name Yeshua ("Jesus") is the yod. Yod represents the "Y" sound in Hebrew. Many names in the Bible that begin with yod are mispronounced by English speakers because the yod in these names was transliterated in English Bibles with the letter "J" rather than "Y". This came about because in early English the letter "J" was pronounced the way we pronounce "Y" today. All proper names in the Old Testament were transliterated into English according to their Hebrew pronunciation, but when English pronunciation shifted to what we know today, these transliterations were not altered. Thus, such Hebrew place names as ye-ru-sha-LAyim, ye-ri-HO, and yar-DEN have become known to us as Jerusalem, Jericho, and Jordan; and Hebrew personal names such as yo-NA, yi-SHAI, and ye-SHU-a have become known to us as Jonah, Jesse, and Jesus. The yod is the smallest letter of the alphabet, which is why Yeshua used it in His famous saying in Matt 5:18: "Until heaven and earth pass away not one yod ("iota" in the Greek text) or one kots will pass from the Torah." For emphasis, Yeshua incorporated in this saying a well-known Hebrew expression: lo' yod ve-LO' ko-TSO shel yod, "not a yod and not a 'thorn' of a yod," i.e., not the most insignificant and unimportant thing. When Yeshua declared that heaven and earth might sooner disappear than the smallest letter of the Hebrew alphabet, or the smallest stroke of a letter, He was simply saying that the Torah ("Law" or "Teaching") of Moses would never cease to be. The second sound in Yeshua's name is called tse-RE, and is pronounced almost like the letter "e" in the word "net". Just as the "Y" sound of the first letter is mispronounced in today's English, so too the first vowel sound in "Jesus". Before the Hebrew name "Yeshua" was transliterated into English, it was first transliterated into Greek. There was no difficulty in transliterating the tse-RE sound since the ancient Greek language had an equivalent letter which represented this sound. And there was no real difficulty in transcribing this same first vowel into English. The translators of the earliest versions of the English Bible transliterated the tse-RE in Yeshua with an "e". Unfortunately, later English speakers guessed wrongly that this "e" should be pronounced as in "me," and thus the first syllable of the English version of Yeshua came to be pronounced "Jee" instead of "Yeh". It is this pronunciation which produced such euphemistic profanities as "Gee" and "Geez". Since Yeshua is spelled "Jeshua" and not "Jesus" in most English versions of the Old Testament (for example in Ezra 2:2 and 2 Chronicles 31:15), one easily gets the impression that the name is never mentioned in the Hebrew Scriptures. Yet 'Yeshua' appears there twenty-nine times, and is the name of at least five different persons and one village in the southern part of Yehudah ("Judah"). n contrast to the early biblical period, there were relatively few different names in use among the Jewish population of the Land of Israel at the time of the Second Temple. The name Yeshua was one of the most common male names in that period, tied with Eleazer for fifth place behind Simon, Joseph, Judah, and John. Nearly one out of ten persons known from the period was named Yeshua. The first sound of the second syllable of Yeshua is the "sh" sound. 6

It is represented by the Hebrew letter shin. However Greek, like many other languages, has no "sh" sound. Instead, the closest approximation, the Greek sigma, was used when transcribing "Yeshua" as "Iesus". Translators of English versions of the New Testament transliterated the Greek transcription of a Hebrew name, instead of returning to the original Hebrew. This was doubly unfortunate, first because the "sh" sound exists in English, and second because in English the "s" sound can shift to the "z" sound, which is what happened in the case of the pronunciation of "Jesus". The fourth sound one hears in the name Yeshua is the "u" sound, as in the word "true". Like the first three sounds, this also has come to be mispronounced but in this case it is not the fault of the translators. They transcribed this sound accurately, but English is not a phonetic language and "u" can be pronounced in more than one way. At some point the "u" in "Jesus" came to be pronounced as in "cut," and so we say "Jeezuhs." The "a" sound, as in the word "father," is the fifth sound in Jesus' name. It is followed by a guttural produced by contracting the lower throat muscles and retracting the tongue root- an unfamiliar task for English speakers. In an exception to the rule, the vowel sound "a" associated with the last letter "ayin" (the guttural) is pronounced before it, not after. While there is no equivalent in English or any other Indo-European language, it is somewhat similar to the last sound in the name of the composer, "Bach." In this position it is almost inaudible to the western ear. Some Israelis pronounce this last sound and some don't, depending on what part of the dispersion their families returned from. The Hebrew Language Academy, guardian of the purity of the language, has ruled that it should be sounded, and Israeli radio and television announcers are required to pronounce it correctly. There was no letter to represent them, and so these fifth and sixth sounds were dropped from the Greek transcription of "Yeshua," -the transcription from which the English "Jesus" is derived. So where did the final "s" of "Jesus" come from? Masculine names in Greek ordinarily end with a consonant, usually with an "s" sound, and less frequently with an "n" or "r" sound. In the case of "Iesus," the Greeks added a sigma, the "s" sound, to close the word. The same is true for the names Nicodemus, Judas, Lazarus, and others. English speakers make one further change from the original pronunciation of Jesus' name. English places the accent on "Je," rather than on "sus." For this reason, the "u" has shortened in its English pronunciation to "uh." In the West, a child's name is often chosen for its pleasant sound, or because another family member had it. The Jews of the Second Temple period also named after relatives (Luke 1:59-63). However, almost all Jewish names have a literal meaning. Occasionally this is seen in English names too, such as Scott (a person from Scotland), Johnson (son of John), and Baker (bread maker). But with Hebrew names it is the rule, rather than the exception. The name Yeshua literally means The LORD's Salvation, or Salvation from the LORD. In comparison, prior to being transliterated from the Hebrew Bible, the name Iesus did not exist in Greek. Through multiple translations and changes in pronunciation, a tradition of saying "Jesus" has obscured His name, "Yeshua." It has shifted His perceived message and identity from Hebrew to Greek. by David Biven

LOVE ONE ANOTHER

Waar kry mens tyd?

Excerpted from the sermon "Jesus Loves Us," by Past. Mark Driscoll

Ek wonder partykeer as ek sê God is die nommer een in my lewe en ek leef vir Hom, of daar nie ’n bietjie skynheiligheid wegkruip in so ’n stelling nie.

o today were going to hear from John about the fact that Jesus loves us from the one whom Jesus loved. Here’s how he begins. He says to love one another. First John 3:11, “For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.” John’s saying, “We’re just going to start in Christian kindergarten. Christian kindergarten is this: love.” This is the first thing we tell kids, right? “Love one another. Jesus loves us.” That’s what we tell them. We tell the little kids, “Jesus loves me, this I know.” We teach them the little song. Christian kindergarten is love. That’s where it all starts, that our God is a Trinitarian God, one God, three persons. God is love. That’s what it says in 1 John 4, the next chapter. God is love and God loves us, and we should love one another. Now here’s what I’m assuming: you all agree with that. All right, within Christianity, there’s lots of divisions, teams, theologies, traditions, denominations. There is, however, no anti-love movement. Of all the things that have been opposed, there’s no group of people saying, “We’re against love, kindness, mercy, compassion. The problem is far too much of that. That just needs to go away.” We all agree, right, loving one another, good thing. Yes or no? Good thing. He’s starting in a very simple place and then he’s going to lead us into a very convicting place. Let me say this, the greatest threat to our health and well being as a church is not out there, it’s in here. It’s not the strangers, but the family members. Sometimes it is presented that the greatest threat to the health, well being, forward progress of the church of Jesus Christ, including local churches like ours is out there. It’s the politicians. It’s whatever, and certainly, people and things surrounding us in the world do affect, impinge upon our freedoms and our joys and our life, but the greatest threat to our unity, our health, and our progress is us. It’s us. Because what a church is, it’s a series of relationships. Between our locations, and our services, and our people, and our Community Groups, and our elders, and our deacons, and our members, and our team leaders, there are all of these relationships, and every single one of them is a potential fault line where people don’t love one another. And if they don’t love one another, then we have an earthquake and the ground becomes unstable and everyone becomes distracted. And all of a sudden, panic starts to set in and it can happen anywhere. It means that if you’re in a Community Group, if two people in your Community Group choose not to love one another, we can have a real problem, a crisis that actually involves the whole family, perchance, based around that conflicted, unresolved relationship. This is where you get church splits, church fights. This is where there’s arguing and hostility and escalation. Here’s what I have seen in now sixteen years of ministry at Mars Hill since core group phase, Satan loves it when Christians don’t love one another, and he empowers bitter believers. Man, if there’s an opportunity for separation, division, acrimony, infighting, conflict, hostility, division, he absolutely involves himself. He likes to magnify minor problems. He likes to escalate minor conflicts. He wants what otherwise could be a reconciled relationship to end up in a war. It’s very important that we’re not just a big church, but we’re a church that’s also big on love. www.marshill.com
