When the Pratt Library closed its Charles Village branch in 1997, the neighborhood was incensed. Community activists (many of whom still enliven in our garden and stacks), filed a lawsuit and shut down Saint Paul Street by staging a full-blown funeral march for their library.Though they lost their lawsuit, they gained control of the historic 1896 building, which they lovingly restored with volunteer hours. By community forum, they created the Village Learning Place, affectionately known as the VLP, to fill the neighborhood's need for accessible resources of all kinds-- from books to computers, from educational classes to a community garden. Since our door opened in 2000, the VLP's mission has always been to promote literacy, cultural awareness, and lifelong learning. Every program and service we offer is free all year round, and that's why we are so grateful for your support!

growing LINK students prepare to honor the VLP founders with garden bouquets at our 10th Anniversary Celebration in June.

The cornerstone of VLP programming is the Let's Invest in Neighborhood Kids (LINK) Initiative, which provides after-school and summer programming for

pre-Kindergarten through eighth graders, addressing critical needs for academic instruction, enrichment opportunities, character development, and family and community involvement. In the three years ahead, LINK programming will

expand to serve preschool and high school students. The VLP's education team has envisioned this strengthened and expanded LINK as a “cradle to gown initiative. In this approach, LINK will guide learners from before they enter

pre-Kindergarten until they graduate from high school ready to confidently enter college or the workforce, pursuing a lifetime of learning. READING INTERVENTION

11 struggling readers in LINK After School received one-on-one

reading instruction. All 11 made gains in proficiency, with 7 gaining a full grade level or more. SOUND OFF!,

Middle school students receive mini-lessons aligned with the State Curriculum, high school choice and application support, and college and career preparation. The enrichment component of LINK After School includes an art program, computer technology lessons, and physical activities. Field trips to cultural sites, performances, and college campuses broaden students' perspectives.

Special Events Read Between the Wines

Read Between the Wines is the Village Learning Place's extraordinary annual October fundraising event. Held in our beautifully renovated historic library and garden, this gala event brings together great food, live music, silent and live auctions, and a fantastic atmosphere of community. 2009's Speakeasy theme celebrated high times with a nod to Baltimore's great bootlegging history.

Our 2009 Event Sponsors:

Spaghetti Disco

Spaghetti Disco is our favorite wacky neighborhood tradition and benefits the VLP. This amazing party brings together delicious food, kids' crafts and games, and great neighbors on a sizzling dance floor. Not too many parties combine meatballs with literacy, the Bee-Gees with the ABCs, like this one does. Spaghetti Disco XII, on Saturday, February 27th, 2010, was the swankiest, most spectacular Disco ever!
