WEST MELBOURNE Howard & William Street Reserve Site Plan & Design

LAURENSIA YAP 784190

S I T E A N A LY S I S Opportunities for the site:

Surrounding the site is a church, a school, restaurants, terrace houses, low-rise apartments and ofďŹ ces. This shows that there are many activities happening near the site but the site itself lacks activities. The number of landmarks and nodes in the area provide opprtunities for the site that would help to develop and attract more people.

DEMOGRAPHICS

West Melbourne has a vast majority of population aged between

20-39 years old (Figure 1). The main household type in the area is made up of families (Figure 2). By knowing these informations, it helps us to know who we are designing it for and who will be the

main users of the site. The design solution should include facilitating the needs of these users and should also complement the City of Melbourne.

Main Issues:

Major mode of transport to work is by cars, and so, very few people

were seen walking. This has an effect on reducing people’s incentive Figure 1

to walk. Thus, the area lacks social interaction and activities, making it unattractive and dull.

Figure 3

DESIGN VISION To create a vibrant, attractive place that would facilitate the neighbourhood and also the City of Melbourne. At the same time, my design aim is to increase social interaction and walkability in the area.

6 Brick facade Victorian villa: This helps to show how the main materials in the site such as bricks can be combined with glass and timber to create a modern style.

7 Kyushu Sangyo University, Japan: The irregular, zig-zag pattern of the stairs that also acts as a seating area creates a unique form and relaxing experience to the users of the site.

3 Greenhouse at Babylonstoren, SA: Since the cafe and the community garden are situated together, a greenhouse cafe would create a new and attractive ambience, in which it can also be used as a wedding venue.

4 Wooden Frame Walkway: The wooden frames are oriented in a way that shows the direction of the walkway and the material wood suits well in a garden theme.
